Such an incredibly moving and beautiful song. For those who don't know, this performance was made in dedication to the victims of the Omagh bombing by the IRA in Northern Ireland. 29 people lost their lives with almost 300 injured as well, marking one of the worst attacks of the troubles. This performance was also coming off the tails of U2's album Pop and the PopMart tour in the 90's. Both the album and the subsequent tour were not received as well as their previous work. This show and performance marked the return of U2 to their more personal, emotional, and spiritual sound that they had let go from the 80's. From here, very shortly afterwards, they started writing what would become All That You Can't Leave Behind. The world would once again embrace U2 as the biggest band in the world. I also recommend that if you like this song, please listen to Electrical Storm.
It’s February 2021, Virus pandemic still going on and Texas has no power nor heat; this song brings me love and hope, even as I’ve never seen this live cut before. Lifelong U2 fan here in California. Peace and care Texas!
Watched this live when they played that night they also played all i want is you and dedicated it to lives lost in the Omagh Bombing which Happened that year worth watching also anyway they wrote this song and decided to give it to Christie moore so It's now Christie's song "
This was preformed on a tv show here in Ireland called the late late show. Its was a mix of talk show and current affairs. You could have actors and politicians appear on the same night. This particular night the show was doing a tribute to the victims of the Omagh bombing, a car bomb that killed 29 people. Omagh is in the north of Ireland which is still considered United Kingdom territory. The bombing was carried out by the RIRA. This song had more resonance on this occasion which is why I guess it doesn't make it U2's stadium tour set lists but was perfect for this show given the tragedy, the division from the south and not forgetting that the song is written about this subject. The lyrics even mention walking on unapproved roads which was a thing in Northern Ireland during the troubles. The host talks to the band after the performance about where they heard about the bombing.
Great song and lovely performance. I especially appreciate Bono's words at the end when he expressed the difficulty in explaining to children the foolish acts of adults, the grain of hope that could be gleaned from the terror is that the Troubles were over, that the people would go the extra mile to understand their adversaries and then go one mile further.
His mother and father are a mix of Catholic and protestant. putting that into context gives this song a lot more meaning. christy moore does a fantastic verson also.
Thank you for explaining the meaning of "North and South" ie Catholic /Protestant , im a massive fan of Christy Moore , religeon is shite , people are people and thats how it should be , fuck politics and fuck religeon
A beautiful song in tribute to all victims of Omagh. It was a terrible, terrible event, but even worse was the disclosure later that the security forces and the british rulers knew of the plan to bomb Omagh . They decided to let it happen.... This would remove all support for the paramilitaries. MY GOD, WHAT A COLD WORLD WE LIVE IN, SURE IT'S ONLY A BUNCH OF PADDY'S.......❤️🔥❤️
Yes, U2 and Bono! And they're carrying a message with this song: which is to remember and tribute to the victims of the Omagh bombing on 15th August 1989: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omagh_bombing We must not forget the message! It is on our own what we do with it, but as we are supporters of bands like U2 we are on duty! On duty to understand, question and maybe share an opinion. U2 is a band with a message. Always. Like it or not, but question it and make your own choice and opinion. Besides that, this is a great U2-song, one of the best if s.o. asks me...;-)

Wow this came out of the blue. Needed this today. An amazing live rendition - wonder why they didn't perform this song more often. It's very special.
