Can't say enough about John--his work with the Desert Rose Band was impeccable---he makes every note count for something-Ralph Emory had a great pix of him playing in group that played in Disneyland when he was younger
Seems like Vicente Amigo is playing almost the same exact lick from 4:32, in his great famous song "Tres Notas Para Decir Te Quiero". The lick is the part of the main theme of the song, so it's played by him multiple times throughout the song, really worth checking out. That also led me to thinking that the gypsy style has a lot in common with Spanish guitar and flamenco technique. Basically, one should not underestimate classical guitar, the finger picking, and all that stuff - all the great old players like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, or Reggy Young - they all knew how to do a proper finger picking. It's amazing how much can you do with your fingers, all well as different picks, or even hybrid picking (which is combining a pick and your fingers). Anyway, just a few thoughts from me. Great gypsy lesson, the whole John Jorgensen series of lessons are very professional and helpful
The chord at 5:02 is really so charismatic that i instantly knew where he was going. In fact it bugged me that it took him so long to play the follow up 😂
except for the flat 9 base, i´d say, it sounds like the first two notes of "stompin at the savoy" :-) there´s a really nice reggae-jazz-version on bireli and sylvain´s 1999 album "Duett"...
At 5:05 he starts playing something ... "Stompin' at the Savoy"? I get the first chord (the "Gretty" chord", but can't make the next chord sound good. Does anybody have a tab for this?
Is the song monster de la maIre you played around 5 min? Is there a transcription with the chord and the melody. If love to learn it the way you played it! Thanks
Freddy Greene was not playing gypsy music. When Django (you've heard of him) came to the US, he hated the american guitars and called them frying pans. When I play jazz with Jack Wilkins (I have played about 5 weeks over the last ten years with him), I love playing american guitars. I have sold to Joe Winikow this year a L5P from 1948, an ES 175 blond with two double white PAFs from 1960, a min ES 300 from 1942 and a 1964 Super 400 CES. I wonder if you ever played guitars of this level...
What I mean is there is a special guitar for gypsy music, with parrallel bracing, and special guitars for american music with fan bracing. I offered to Jack Wilkins two guitars, a Tal Farlow and an old 1949 L7C. The L7C are better than the L5. There was a time, in the 1990's when I was the bigger world collector of L5CES from 1959 till 1965, I had 53 guitars, the holy grail of american jazz guitars, so if you wish to teach me what they are, your chances are close to zero
Why does every Gypsy Jazz lesson say, down strokes only, and then they proceed to play upstrokes? I mean I get it, the down stroke is the driving force but it's not down only!
I would be delighted to play with you in Montréal, I wonder if you know the first 3 chords of any gypsy tune. Maybe you do know how to play a famous children song like "au clair de la lune", given your weird evaluation of guitars you will do beautifully playing 2 chords, C major and G7. Seriously, Gitane are as good as exceptional instruments ! I will tell this one to my friends and they will laugh....
I have 4 Busato, one Hahl, 4 Castelluccia, 2 Anastasio, 4 Di Mauro. I know a bit about sound. I have sold for 50,000$ of L5, Super 400 and ES 175 and ES300 to Archtop.com since January, I am one of the biggest client of Joe Winikow and Michael Horowitz. So nobody needs to tell me if a guitar reverbarates or not. I like Jorgenson, who owns a Selmer and plays great, but the guitar he plays on this video is not very good. And I guess freedom allows us to express what we feel. Some people swallow
to arnyshack, gypsy guitars must NOT reverbarate. They are built with tone bars which are all parralell to the bridge, to eliminate harmonics/overtones. This gives this bark tone, dry and woody, to the gypsy guitars. None of the american guitars are built like this. They have fan bracing, and they do reverbarate because that is the sound we want. No american guitar can cut through a gypsy band because they are not parrallel braced. When I played with Jack Wilkins I met Bob Benedetto and discussed
If you believe Jorgenson made this video to teach you something, listen to the end of it. Here he goes "its the signature model of Gitane, and so on and so on". He is paid to endorse a low end guitar making company. I have imported about 800 vintage guitars from France and sold them in America. Even the worst of these guitars killed this crappy Gitane. The modern guitar buiders who buid really good guitars are Barault, Hahl, AJL and Noni. The rest you can burn in your fireplace.
more like very very versatile player, who can hold his own in pretty much every style of popular music. He can shred, he can do sweep picking, and create beautiful jazz voicings as well.
Well if you cannot make a difference between a Gitane and Busatos, Anastasio, Castelluccia, Favino and Di Mauro, you need to consult a doctor for you ear... Seriously ! I am French, I am 63, I have played in jazz clubs around the world, I am not as good as John but I play gypsy guitar as well.Selling guitars is not my business, I am a trader and I take care of the wealth of most of the major investors in Canada. You must understand that profits on selling guitars is peanuts.
I like John and I like you too. I never claimed the Gitane was not ladder bracing, I said it reverberates. Yes, wood like brazilian rosewood produce more harmonics/overtones than, say, indian rosewood. You are full of wrong ideas, like I am a novice. You are talking about a person you do not know. A lot of people like you just put their foot in their mouth. For some its young age for some others its brain decay.
Its funny that american players like John Jorgenson always use to think that THEY invented this kind of musicstyle :-) Respect to the man, he s a great player, but still he is playing this style pretty much "american"...
+Swing4Django You are a fucking idiot, stop projecting your idiocy. How could an American think he invented " Gypsy Jazz" ? he knows his stuff too bad you are to thick to hear.
+jsilence418 Your channel picture looks like you are behaving: f...ck..n redicolous n ugly. I did share my RESPECT with the man, just the way he plays "Gypsyjazz" is some kind of american style. If YOU dont hear that you are too dumb to know about the style yourself. Stop shouting at others if you dont know what to say. Thank you.
yeah, now tell me that harmony does not exist, and they're just playing random notes... You're ignorant. The gypsy jazz standards are written down in the Real Book, it's not a holy cow really. It's just a genre, like many others
Amysshack, if you are a true gypsy music player, you do not care about his jacket, but you do about the sound of his guitar and the way he phrases. What kind of world do you live in where it's an offence to express an opinion. My uncle was burnt in a concentration camp because he criticized the nazis. So me I do express myself, with respect. Jorgenson plays hundred times better the guitar than me but I play hundred times better gypsy music than him.
I believe it's an Am6 chord. 5th fret 6th string, 4th fret 4th string, 5th fret 2nd and 3rd strings.(sounds like he might also be fretting the 1st string at the 5th as well)
I enjoyed everything about this video.
What a relief to see great teacher/players stand head and shoulders above the general tone of social media!
it is so pleasant to talk to an expert like you

Love the sound of Gypsy Jazz. Sounds like classical guitar jazzed up.
John Jorgenson is a treasure.
The chord at 5:02 is really so charismatic that i instantly knew where he was going. In fact it bugged me that it took him so long to play the follow up 😂
Shared your instruction with guitarist in Norway and Greece. Keep it coming! You seem to be a nice man
Manoir de mes Reves. One of my faves and fun to play, beautiful
Thank you, really great hints simple explained 😁🎸🎵
John, thank you, thank you, thank you, very much
Anybody know the name of the short tune John plays starting at 5:00, during the Getty Chord section?
I'm looking for the same name !
Me too !!! It's soooooooo beautiful ! Was searching that already and no luck :( Also would love a guitar tab for that mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
hey gusy it's Manoir de Mes Reves from django, cheers
Carlos Vasconez Oh my god ! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH !!!!
I did enjoy this lesson. It's very interesting and persuasive.
except for the flat 9 base, i´d say, it sounds like the first two notes of "stompin at the savoy" :-) there´s a really nice reggae-jazz-version on bireli and sylvain´s 1999 album "Duett"...

He`s great!
Love the 2 finger nod to Django too ;-)
Shouldn't the note at 4:32 be g# instead of g?
THANKS YOU JUST RIGHT ....
Thanks! Your'e a good teacher!
Where do you live around Samois, I am coming this year to play with my friend Denis Chang,I'll come and teach you a couple of chords...
does anyone know the tune he plays around 5:04? or where the other licks came from?
thanks
check out "tres notas para decir te quiero" by Vicente Amigo... it's a flamenco style but I can hear a lot of similarities
what was that song you played at 5:16
Is the song monster de la maIre you played around 5 min? Is there a transcription with the chord and the melody. If love to learn it the way you played it!
Thanks
Galli "silk and steel",(green box) just try them once ,very annoying scratchy sound from Argentina (?) on that guitar.
Indeed.
Anyone have any luck with Jazz III picks?
Anyone know what Django tune he plays at 5:15?
Could someone provide the spelling and model of the guitar he is playing?
Gitane DG-320
how does that sound scottish?

Yes, it's actually a Wegen Fatone! :)
Just received a 1990 Anastasio with brazilian rosewood, I am sad that is does not sound better than a arnysshack Gitane.

Is this a DG 300?
Yes it is...
nice chords

nice one for going ridiculously fast

I like the L4, I had a 1964 which was a bomb.
6:23 Since when were The Beatles Scottish?
Thanks, I guys (I got a couple replies to my querie). I'll see if I can push it farther along now.
I love what he plays but he explains it like "Oh yeah just like this" and then does something and I can barely see what he's doing :/

he mentioned in the vid tortoise shell.
Could be a Wegen pick, a lot of gypsy jazz players use them...

your G string is out of his fix on the bridge...
You must start listening. A parrallel braces guitar is not a fan braced guitar
he plays like django ... with the two finger style .lol
The 62 switchmaster is nice, the 46 L5 also, the rest is crap
1:12 .....JACK BAUER
think it might be wood
I love John Jorgenson and all, but that is not la pompe.
What? Explain.
If you believe Jorgenson made this video to teach you something, listen to the end of it. Here he goes "its the signature model of Gitane, and so on and so on". Lol, two fingers. Jorgensen's an Orthodox Djangoist? : )

Levin guitars are nice, but not as nice as Gibsons
Its funny that american players like John Jorgenson always use to think that THEY invented this kind of musicstyle :-)

Swing4Django You have done it again, another pointless rambling rant that shows what an imbecile you are .
gypsy jazz has no rules fool! it comes natural from the soul
yeah, now tell me that harmony does not exist, and they're just playing random notes... You're ignorant. The gypsy jazz standards are written down in the Real Book, it's not a holy cow really. It's just a genre, like many others

Crappy sound, saturated, and the guitar reverbarates
