Playing guitar for 15 years and just totally re-inspired by this man. Such a privilege to hear someone combine charged emotional intensity with such technical proficiency. And I just learned he is coming to my towen of Juneau AK next month. Yay!
People who complain about too many notes are often hacks. Dead notes or not, this guy can play and the phrasing is pretty damn good to my ears. But hey what do I know.
You can also find his CD's at Amazon. When you go to his web site you can also find where he will be playing with his quintet. See him in person if you can, especially if it's a small venue.
@guitarman63mm John Jorgenson knows more about phrasing across a wider range of guitar styles than most people know in their favorite style. Besides being a Django Reinhardt fan/historian, Jorgenson has also recorded or toured with Elton John, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jr., Barbra Streisand, Luciano Pavarotti, Roy Orbison, Patty Loveless and Bonnie Raitt He is known internationally for both his tone and phrasing.
People are forgetting to rate this! Only reason this had a poor rating is that there are almost no ratings being done. This video offers some nice insights into Django's technique and approach.
Sorry, and YOU are? John is respected in Samois by some of the best Gypsy players in the world. Love to see your 'Selmer' by the way. Also Jazz came from America by the way. Dufus
Is there a special kind of strings on that Takamine or is is the pick (obviously its mostly the technique) that gives you the sound? Also those strings seem unique more bend to them or something and the sustain seem different?
A guitarist once told me gypsy guitarists play in the PHRYGIAN mode or scale,I think in standard tuning, I aways milk one string for all it's worth, then ascend or descend to the next and try to cobble it all together, a memory comes in handy, like Jimmy Page said,it's all MATH when you break it down.
Video would have been better with John's vintage Selmer Macaferi petite bouche guitar. I think he may have been persuded to use Takimine guitar for the plug with Guitarist Mag. The strings sound way too flappy. The gypsy guitar is a dryer, crisper sound. There is nothing like silver plated copper wound stings. They bring a sweetness to the sound of the guitar. However for the purpose of introducing John Jorgenson and the Gypsy Jazz style it is fine.
@guitarman63mm I understand completely, but then... Why are you here, friend? Gypsy Jazz without this style of playing is like Chinese food without rice!
"a lot of those *plays the guitar".....and then lots of this *plays the guitar" and the *plays the guitar* are also played." oh man, the guy should also be able to talk about that stuff he's doing. :D
My poor old dad saw Django and says these guys plus Rosenberg aint Djangos bootlace. He says that therell never be anyone like the Django he saw. Other guys like Emmet Ray who was brilliant went crazy. These new guys never saw Django he was like an old boot theyre like rubber thongs
The guys you're talking about are quite ones of the the best in this field, you cannot compare them to Django though, it's the same style of music but with 50 and more years gap, they don't play the same way and have different backgrounds and influences, musicians like Rosenberg, Jorgenson are really good and deserve to be heard, they are keeping the Django legacy with their own style and own songwriting. By the way Emmet Ray is a fictional guy, he only exists in Woody Allen's movie "Sweet and Lowdown"
Very nice. I believe that if you are going to play a guitar you should get one that is better than you ability as it will make you want to play better. I also believe you need a better axe. You really sound great however; You would sound even better with a really great guitar. Good sound. Never stop playing.

Why would anyone hit the dislike button on this? Great video. Thanks for sharing
Someone would hit the dislike because the violin sounds screechy.
He’s a masterful musician.
John and Stephan!!!
Two really great musicians and people!!!
People who complain about too many notes are often hacks. Dead notes or not, this guy can play and the phrasing is pretty damn good to my ears. But hey what do I know.
that "Ultraspontane" both title and melody make my soul sing and hands shake the guitar
Un chitarrista incredibile e molto versatile ! Stupendo
wow, thats incredible. Wish I could play like this.
You can also find his CD's at Amazon. When you go to his web site you can also find where he will be playing with his quintet. See him in person if you can, especially if it's a small venue.

@TheFireStarter1215
Its from the song: Ultraspontane, from the John Jorgenson Quintet, album of the same name. Also all around great album.
I saw the John Jorgenson Quintet last week in Honolulu. Astonishing musicianship and the whole show was a blast. Check him out if you get the chance.
What a master!
Fantastico. Thanks
Wow! You can really hear the flamenco influence. (Carlos Montoya)
Thanks very much for posting this!
I dunno about gypsy jazz, but I like this vid and I learned a few things from watching it.
Cool playing, regardless of whatever label folks put on it.
I shall, and thank you!
Wow ! i would give my right arm to be able to play
even one of those licks.
very nice
If you gave your right arm, you wouldn't be able to play. Better give a foot1
Damn! that guy is amazefu****zing
Excellente leçon gypsy guitare
John is a musicians musician! I've seen him in concert a few times and he's just an awsome guitarist and maybe a more awesome clarinetist.
@guitarman63mm I agree. I actually feel that trying to cram alot of notes together into a passage takes alot away from the music

shit...he makes that look so easy.
Stunningly Good
Cheers
Wow...
thanks, very informative
Sorry, and YOU are?

Dufus
Agreed.
@KINGSLIDEGUITAR so, what should pick be made of, and what thickness shall it have to make strings sound best? :)
Your guitar is really nice
In fact, i also own a Trembita guitar here is Russia =)
Name of guitar is Takamine.I just bought one :),and im starting lessons :D
I have always heard that Dickey Betts wrote "Jessica" with Django in mind, so it could be played with 2 fingers.
Some might say that phrasing is more important than the amount of notes you can cram into a passage; I'm one of them.
Is there a special kind of strings on that Takamine or is is the pick (obviously its mostly the technique) that gives you the sound? Also those strings seem unique more bend to them or something and the sustain seem different?

"Manoir de ma reves" (means: house of my dreams) AKA "Django's Castle. The next one is Improvisation no 1
@Sanioz In his resume he neglected to mention Gypsy Guitar Master.

It's one of his signature guitars. Just search Takamine JJ. You'll prolly find it.
please could you tell me what is the name of the original song blues he plays at 4:27 ? thanks :)
nico01041973 Django Reinhardt - Manoir des Mes Reves. (also known as Django's castle). And its not a blues song.
so you do not need to buy a qypsy guitar? a regular dreadnought with gypsy string can get the same sound?
Actually it sounds pretty good on a dreadnought also. Dont you think?
Jimmy Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Stochelo, Bireli: this guy's good, but I'd go to these guys for my modern or even classic Gypsy.
@guitarman63mm I understand completely, but then... Why are you here, friend? Gypsy Jazz without this style of playing is like Chinese food without rice!
Jesus fuck, what a bunch of haters! The guy can play, nothing else to say about it.
@KINGSLIDEGUITAR - actually Japan makes good guitars. It's China that makes the cheap stuff.
Chords in 4:20 are excelent
@KINGSLIDEGUITAR hey are you playing the Trembita Ukrainian guitar!? =)
who is that guitarist that he is talking about
whats the name of the intro song?
What the hell is that amazingness called that they play during the beginning?! Anyone?
Alex Leon 6 years and still no answer poor guy
This is “Ultraspontane”, just search it in TH-cam you’ll find it;) love it too
Is it standard tuning? at 5:10 he plays everything open and it seems to be standard tuning...?
he does i thought it was him
That's a reply to "lordkazama86".
What do they mean with a "gipsy Guitar"?? is it stolen?
"a lot of those *plays the guitar".....and then lots of this *plays the guitar" and the *plays the guitar* are also played."
oh man, the guy should also be able to talk about that stuff he's doing. :D
This was a reply to harryspoonpotter.
Are the strings nylon?
são de nylon.
no

lol
One man's noodles is another man's noodling ,,?!
this guy knows his Django BTW
Fine I'll go for the ol' "We-Beat-You-In-The-Revolutionary-War!" chestnut. Damn Redcoats....can't fight for shit.
@Sanioz Django Reinhardt, lol
Wait...I gotta learn *arpeggios*!? Dang it!!!!!
dunlop 3.0mm stubby

hes good but still no one is better than a real gipsy .. im a gipsy too :P
Musicalally he is very good, but his technique is quite reachable. Not as insane like Stochelo, Debarre or Lagrene. :-)
Django Reinhardt.
lol, talking about making it look easy
Im a gipsy... but thanks..
Or that you can play them at all, lol!
If they would all practice a little more, they might get pretty good on the guitar...😂
so many dead notes :-/
