My dad had a 1958 Ford Custom. It was a 2 door sedan DEFINITELY remember it had the 2-speed Ford-O-matic. So there's your answer. It had the small six cylinder engine. I so remember summer drives to the country and the car would overheat. I also remember it rusting out prematurely. My mom learned to drive on that car. She sometimes made me park it for her, because she could not manipulate the manual steering. It is how I learned to drive. So many memories OMG!

Thank you so much for sharing those memories ford and overheating seems to be a problem I had a 67 mustang and had heating issues could drive it 20-25 miles at a time on a hot summer day. I put three radiators in that car. The last one was the biggest 4 core aluminum radiator I could find no more heating issues after that

What a nice car. Wagon usually got used up quickly. The low end models were the workhorse wagons, usually used by commercial workers and such. To see a "low end" wagon in such nice condition is rare indeed!

I really like the stickers on the rear quarter windows. I remember traveling with my parents as a young boy in our family station wagons on summer vacations. What a time we had. You could go all over the country every monument national Park wherever you wanted to go and see them in all their glory and you were not rushed and it was not crowded.
My dad would always get a sticker from every state and also from every national park that we visited and then he put them all over the windows in our station wagon just exactly like this one has in your review. Very nice Jay! Thanks for the memories!

I don't like the decals. They block your vision. If I bought the car, the first thing I would do would be to scrape them off. I don't need to see the places that somebody else went. My souvenirs are photos.

Ford seemed to be flip-flopping between round and shaped tail lights, maybe to better differentiate model years from the backside. The round tail lights seemed to be what they usually fell back on for years.
If you read the information you showed concerning the transmissions offered , the FORDOMATIC was a 3-speed automatic, probably the last year it was offered. These continued to start in 2nd gear. Most common application was in the Edsel, marketed to those who felt they were sophisticated, but weren't. It was offered in other Ford car lines probably because it was the basic automatic and that people may not have understood the CRUISE-O-MATIC.
Possibly the new aluminum-cased 2-speed FORDOMATIC was introduced in 1958, but it was for 1959 model year cars. Again, it was a way to usher in a new automatic without making much of a splash and going unnoticed. For the cheaper entry-level Fords and again, for the unsophisticated Edsel buyers of which all Edsels were built on the Ford chassis rather than having the choice of a Mercury chassis. But, the new 2-speed FORDOMATIC was indeed introduced for the 1959 model year.
As far as Ranch Wagons go, most were 2-doors in the early years with other GM lines following suit.
My father, being a Fire Dept. Battalion Chief, got a new station wagon every year through 1968. He got a 1968 Ford 4-door Ranch Wagon equipped with a 390 V8 engine with the 2nd year of the Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic. It was our City's first move away from Chevrolet. With the "Police Special" package, it had no radio or air conditioning. It was also an attempt to make fire cars more visible changing the color to solid white. It actually made them less visible to the public. For my father's next fire s/w, it returned to traditional red and was a 383-equipped Plymouth Belvedere.
Oh, as you can see in your 1958 Ranch Wagon example, the engine was a "Y" block and probably a 292 as the 312 was usually indicated on the valve covers.

@@What.its.like. Sources can be in error and omissive. Example. I actually owned a 1971 Ford Ranchero Squire. Inside the glovebox door it showed that this particular model came standard with a 351C-4v V8 and automatic transmission. It could come with or without A/C. The optional engine was a 429-4v V8, but A/C was NOT an option. Examples came with a 302-2v V8 and although I've never seen one, some say that A/C was available on the 429. I have doubta bout a factory air unit as there wasn't room under the hood as the A/C housing was right up against my 351. Smaller engene? Maybe. It would be like getting a car with radio-delete.

I'm another one who likes the overall look of the '58 better than the '57, and the front end resembles that year's Thunderbird.
One thing I always liked about the Fords from that timeframe is the styling never got over the top. They didn't get too flashy, therefore ageing a lot better.

The biggest problem with the back end of all the 1958 Ford car models is that the tail light lenses protruded too far outward. And because they stuck out so far, it was/is very easy to back into something that would hit the lenses. These cars were still on the road when I was a car-guy kid and I remember that almost all of them had at least one broken tail light lense. I'd say upon learning of that, Ford realized that design would generate extra commerce, because Ford would again come out with a car that was susceptible to tail light lense breakage. That was the 1969 Ford wagon's, not the sedans or coupe as they used a different tail light design, but the '69 wagons would often be seen with busted-up tail light lenses.
A notable for 1958 is that was the first year of the 352 FE Series V-8 engine. The 352 was glorious compared to the outgoing Y-Block V-8 with their damn tiny oil galleries and drains inside the block. And oh lord, the smooth power the 352 had!!! A brilliant design due to our American engineers. The FE Series engines were some of the best engines that Ford ever built. And we now know that the 352 went on to power Ford cars through the 1960s in various forms and continued on in Ford trucks into the mid-1970s. Maybe I'm nuts but just writing about the FE Series engines makes me want another one.

Hi Justin, outstanding video! Outstanding info! I am 63 years old and I am a 1978 high school/automotive vocational school graduate. I started out at a high volume automatic transmission shop and worked my way to second lead transmission man at a large Ford dealership years ago. Back in the 1950s, the Ford Motor Company and BorgWarner transmissions Inc. where in cahoots with each other, sharing engineering with each other, but not manufacturing. The Ford-O-Matic aluminum case two speed that you showed was Fords light duty automatic, It was very simple and it's nick name was the "Ford mickey mouse transmission" that was replaced in 1965 by the Ford C-4 three speed automatic. The 1964 and1/2 Mustang saw the C-4 first. The Ford Ford-O-Matic aluminum case two speed is not as heavy duty as the aluminum case Chevrolet two speed Powerglide is. The Fordomatic iron case was Fords first automatic, it was a joint effort between Ford and BorgWarner, it was called the "Ford FM" it was a three speed, but you had to pull the shifter into "L" for three speed use, and it was hit or miss whether or not the transmission would end up in first or second gear depending on how fast you where doing. The Ford Cruise-O-Matic was a three speed automatic also, but was more shift command friendly, it too was a joint effort between Ford and BorgWarner, it was called the "Ford FMX" it eventually replaced the Ford FM. The Ford AOD (Automatic Overdrive) four speed aluminum transmission eventually replaced the FMX. Ford also had a larger iron case transmission called the "Lincoln" FM and FMX, they where replaced in 1966 by the Ford C-6 transmission. BorgWarner had iron case automatic transmissions that where very similar to Ford, but in the mean time most parts do not interchange. They found their way in American Motors, Studebaker and Checker Marathon. I do not mean to change the subject, but the GM Muncie 4 speed and the GM Muncie 4 speed rock crusher 4 speed transmission(s) "designed by GM" that where produced by The Muncie, Indiana Chevrolet Plant in Muncie Indiana, the BorgWarner T-10 4 speed and the BorgWarner super T-10 4 speed(s) where produced right down the street, that's no coincidence. A Muncie 4 speed looks very similar to a BorgWarner 4 speed. Please reply. Dave...

In my '70's. I grew up with neighbors who had bought a '55 T-Bird new with the 292 V8, which they kept for over 30 years (I should have bought it when i had the chance). The Fordomatic transmission in that car was a 3-speed...BUT it starts in second gear normally when you put the shifter in Drive. If you floor it, it would start off in First, or if you shifted the selector to Low at a lower speed with a heavy foot, it would drop into first. So, both the Fordomatic and Cruise-0-Matic (my parents had a '59 Galaxie with the 240 Horse 332 and Cruise-o-Matic which became my first car when I turned 16 and it was the oldest car in the stable), in my experience, were 3-speed automatics...with slightly different selector options.

Nice presentation, Jay. By the way, on that rear seat, there's a bar that swings out from underneath in a 180-degree arc that acts as a vertical support for that seat bottom when inverted. I noticed in your demo video that you didn't deploy that bar, and that's why that section of seat didn't lay flat and flush with the backrest portion.

    My parents had one when I was 9 or 10. Theirs was a 223 6 banger with a 3-speed
tranny. It was yellow and white too. Rusted as bad or worse than the '57 and ours
    was no exception. For road
    trips, my parents turned it
into a camper wagon with a
mattress in back and curtains on the windows in
the rear. Don't think we kept
it too long as it broke down
    while we were on vacation.
Dad sent Mom, Sis, and I
    A home on a Greyhound
while he waited for the car to
be fixed. He drove it home
after it was fixed and traded
    it for a '58 Dodge 4-door
    hardtop. My grandparents
also had one and traded it
in on a new Impala wagon
after the tin worm ate it up
    really bad after 2 years.
So much for our '58 Ford.

Beautiful wagon. My favorite configuration--2 door wagons.
You did a great job on this video.
I "prefer" the 1957 although I prefer the '58s rear (opposite to your taste).
The Cruise-O-Matic was not the same as the Ford-O-Matic. Although Ford-O-Matic was a three speed unit, under normal conditions it started off in second gear. If you selected "L" (low) with the shift lever or floored the accelerator upon take off the car would start in low.
Cruise-O-Matic had two driving ranges (D1 and D2). For most driving situations selecting D1 made the car always automatically start off in low, change to second then to third.
Selecting D2 forced the car to always start in second then automatically shift to third. D2 was great in snow, sand or mud because less power was going to the rear wheels, eliminating slip.
The reason D1 was next to L is because you could select L and then "manually" upshift to second then to third.
    Keep up the good work.

58' just has better styling, I don't even think it's an opinion. I generally like 58s better within all of the big three. 59' is better still, and in a lot of ways 60' was even better still. MY favorite car of all time is the 61' Cadillac and the 59' Pontiac. When I want to race around with the wife I like the 59' Poncho (Poncho is slang for Pontiac in the 50s and 60s. It meant get the fast car) Then I love the 61' Eldorado for jamming with my band. It's hard to say. I think 60' is very sweet too but it's really hard to have better design with the four fins. IF I ever get a 60 and or 59, I'm going to fab some bottom fender fins if it is the Coupe DeVille or as 62' series. If I end up with an Eldorado Biarritz I'll just leave it alone.

Also on the brochure you posted at 7.13 the Fordomatic is called out as a 3 speed. Notice that? Just saying - - - History: The original Ford-O-Matic, while capable of three forward speeds, started out in second and shifted to third, with first only being used when selecting L on the gear shift column. However, if floored from a standing start, it would immediately shift from second to low then shift back to second and then third as the vehicle accelerated. The Ford-O-Matic two-speed transmission was introduced in 1959. Some LATE 58's had the 2 speed.
