1:44 to skip to the music...man it's a shame Mahler removed this movement from future versions, it's gorgeous and sentimental in a way that is unique (most of Mahler is but still).
I always wondered what this movement sounded like. Finally, I have become curious enough to do something about that, and I'm glad I have. This is a beautiful piece of music. It's really too bad it received so much criticism upon release.
The spirits of those who harshly criticized the original mov.2 must be with us with the thumbs down :) It must be an interesting feeling to dislike this piece...
I'd wondered about that. Mahler undeniably had his reasons. It truly does stand on its own, and perhaps being played just a tick (or two) slower than the intact movements made what followed more of a jolt than he felt should have been. (The true second movement was my introduction to Mahler, and not knowing what it was from I'd instantly thought, "This composer has a sense of humor." But that opened the door for me to listen to everything else he'd done.)
The most obvious reason for removing it was that it was not even composed for the Symphony in the first place. He just took a piece he had written for something else and put it in the Symphony. And to give it a more convincing symphonic structure he removed it again and inserted the repeat into the first movement.

Los mahlerianos estamos agradecidos de que haya aparecido esta partitura para completar la primea sinfonia de Mahler.-
A life lived in eight minutes - sublime!
Yes!
It was forever the simple things which were important to Mahler, family; children. I think this piece says that

I found myself in the same place today (: and agreed, a beautiful piece from a young Mahler
It sounds so beautiful... ❤
beautiful rendition by maestro harding!!
I always thought Mahler #1 was strange the was it jumped from agitated to agitated and this movement makes sense to break it up.

His great first symphony would have been greater if he had left this gem in !
this movement oririginally was played in his first symphony, but got hash criticism and was removed later on.

... delicato e profondo
Was the perfect bridge between the mysterious 1st movement and the boisterous 2nd movement ...a shame he had it removed !
