Tout simplement magnifique : "reconstruction" admirablement dirigée et interprétée. Du grand art.

Is this version different from the 1889 Budapest version?

What a pity that having taken on the task of resurrecting the ur-version of the 1st that the orchestra is not arranged in the fashion that Mahler would have used (and continued to use throughout his life, as photos show): divided violins, cellos left, violas right, basses either in back of the cellos or at the back wall of the stage. The Vienna Philharmonic, bless them, still uses this layout in most of its New Year's Concerts. The "Mahler" orchestra here is arranged in the WORST of the 20th century string dispositions (because the cellos are aimed at the conductor, not into the hall), all of which arose AFTER Mahler. The same anachronistic layout regularly occurs with Liniz's so-called "Bruckner" orchestra. I'm not being some performance-practice pedant here--there are orchestral effects Mahler uses, even in this early work and particularly involving the two violin sections, that only work properly if they are divided across the stage. Even the opening high chord sounds better with divided violins: the effect in the hall is of being enveloped in violins.

I agree with you that it would have been preferable to change the set-up. Unfortunately though, due to the small string section, limited rehearsal time and the acoustics of the place this would not have worked out. I tried to do it once with an orchestra not used to it and almost rebelling against it, and it was close to disaster. Under different circumstances, I would surely prefer divided violins, basses on the left, etc.
