We’ve got Queen’s shadow and the age of republic comics, we’re going to get Master and Apprentice, hopefully we’ll get a novel about child Anakin. How Shmi got sold into slavery and the day she gave birth to Anakin and how his life went before he met Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan

Combined with Dave Filoni they will salvage the franchise. Hell maybe this is the direction Disney needs to go for the time being. Just books and tv shows, while they sort out on just how the hell would they make their movies.

isa arif The TPM 20th anniversary is coming up and they been planning this for years. Better to it at the right time than randomly. Also Lucasfilm did do prequel post-disney content in Darth Maul comics, and Obi-Wan and Anakin comic.

I wasn’t super engaged in the first Thrawn book because I wasn’t super interested in the characters (except for Thrawn and Eli) and I found some of the plotline to be confusing but I’m really excited for this one because I love the Clone Wars and have more familiarty with the people surrounding Thrawn. Hopefully this will top Bloodline for my second favorite canon book.

2 questions I have my fingers crossed for this book to answer:
    1. How did Thrawn meet Rukh (and by extension what's up with the Noghri in this new timeline)?
    2. What's going on with Eli Vanto & the Chiss? I really liked Eli, he wasn't just Pellaon over again

I love how I felt confused and left behind at some points, when Thrawn was making deductions and conclusions. Though I was just sitting down and reading, I truly felt I was in the presence of a higher intelligence. I'm still a little confused by some of it.
I also adored the teacher/student (or should I say master/apprentice?) relationship between Thrawn and Commodore Faro. It helped me understand his thoughts by having Faro stand in for the readers, and I like that Thrawn is trying to help others keep up with, or think more like, himself. This can also be seen in Star Wars Rebels:
    _“Captain, do you recognise this?”_
_“So I will ask you again, Captain, do you know what this is?”_
    _“Yes, but why?”_
    - With Captain Slavin, regarding Hera's kalikori
_“Lieutenant, what can you tell me about this?”_
    - With Lieutenant Lyste, about the phoenix symbol
_“A pity you don't study art, Agent Kallus. There is much it can show you, if you know where to look.”_
    - With Agent Kallus, finding the Attolon base

Would like to have had an epilogue involving Vader's report to the Emperor and also Thrawn's report to the Emperor. Padme was great. Don't think Vader talked too much but hearing his inner monologue was cool. Also commanding in flight was interesting, its like what you would imagine hearing during the trench run if it not cut for a movie.

The best part is thrawn and Vader argue like an old couple
Thrawn: "why can't you trust me"
    Vader: "what about attalon"
Thrawn: "omg I'm not done yet"
Vader: "then why don't we go back and finish it"

I had a feeling that Ezra and Thrawn would wind up in back in Chiss space, training force sensitives against whatever is formulating in Unknown Regions, eventually being joined by Sabine and Ashoka. This book set that up nicely. Though I figured it would be a resurgent Sith Empire. The threat as presented doesn't seem nearly as overpowering as that. They do however seem like the sort who would be glad to use an exiled Imperial remnant to further their purposes.

I loved how Vader/Anakin and Thrawn roles and the things they said to each other swapped (kinda) as the time between Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War ere changed. I don't know about legends era aliens much but I got the feeling that an old legends alien was maybe just somewhat cannonized.

I immensely enjoyed listening to your spoiler-free review of the book. Your articulation is great and flows smoothly. The first “Thrawn” novel shocked me with a twist to Thrawn’s story towards the end so I was expecting something similar to happen in “Alliances”---and was satisfied with it. Zahn has a way of leaving room for potential future stories without having to tamper with the rest of the Star Wars galaxy and timeline.
It does make sense to me that the interactions between Vader and the Grand Admiral are somewhat better than Anakin and Thrawn because right off the bat, the book lets us know the high-stakes conflict. Vader questions the Chiss’ loyalty to the Empire so Thrawn is on thin ice. You mentioned how Vader shouldn’t need to talk as much; I think he should have used some more physical aggression to show Thrawn how dangerously close he was to being executed.
I have to agree that this book just a hint below “Thrawn” but that’s because the first one hit everything out of the ballpark. I’d love to get the free audiobook of “Alliances” on Audible but I already used it to download “Thrawn”. Still, it may be worth paying for “Alliances”! Marc Thompson is entertaining in all of his Star Wars books.

I just put down the book and wow. Yes, I liked Thrawn better as a Thrawn-centric book but I absolutely loved the little additions and connections(some new, some old) to the overall universe in this one. If books like this keep popping up I may even be able to get through the prequels because they certainly are making their stories richer in my opinion. Although I admit I don't trust any Star Wars author to pull off these things in a satisfactory way like I do Mr Timothy Zahn.

    SOME SPOILERS, NOT MANY:
I will say that though I was EXTREMELY excited for Alliances, I enjoyed the first book better. Anakin was handled PERFECTLY by Zahn, but Vader....meh. The story between Vader and Thrawn is honestly quite redundant. Maybe that’s just me. Honestly, Thrawn is my favorite Star Wars character besides Obi-Wan. But the Vader arc seemed like a constant “Thrawn is the best character” worshipping session. Maybe I just wanted to see Vader be Vader and just momentarily show that side to Thrawn. He threatens Thrawn SO much, and nothing ever happens. It was odd. I attributed to him giving leniency because of their history, but multiple people including Filoni have said that Vader was actively trying to destroy everybody connected to his past in this stage of his life. Thrawn is DIRECTLY connected to Padme. That was my biggest issue in the book; I truly do not believe Vader would have remained that patient with Thrawn. At least once, he should have “shown him the true power of the force” or some sort of Sith thing lol. Anyways, those are just my ideas. Definitely recommend reading this though, it sets up some interesting plot points for the future....

  • @horizonbrave1533
    @horizonbrave1533 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm only about 1/4 the way through..so I"m still early on, but I'm not as happy as I am with the first Thrawn book. The characters seem a bit shoe horned together...I mean Anakin and Thrawn just happen to meet outside of Batuu? Maybe it's explained later on...but I cant' imagine Thrawn just crusing by and stop there cause he's "in the neighborhood"... I love Zahn's dialogue and character moments, that hasn't changed, but I don't know this one seems to be to live up to the pun...a bit 'forced'. I don't really enjoy seeing Thrawn so "overpowered". By which I mean, no matter what he's always right about everything and always has some master plan up his sleeve or is written so that everything works out so that he comes off as far more clever than anyone else around. This absolutely kills the believability and honestly the support I can get behind him, when I just know he's going to be right and make everyone else raround him look foolish.

Is it recommended to read "New Dawn" before "Thrawn: Alliances". Im trying to read the books in order and "new Dawn" is next on my list but, I'm so excited for this book! thanks to anyone that takes time to answer!

Nope. Thrawn’s novels take place before A New Dawn. Although the story of Thrawn and Vader takes place between Rebels seasons 3 and 4.

Star Wars Explained I was wondering if you could make a video or link something on how to read Star Wars Canon Books. I know you made a similar video How To Read Star Wars Legends, but I want one for Canon books. I'm usually not interested in books, but the Ahsoka novel was the first Star Wars book I've ever read and I loved it. I'm a huge Clone Wars/Ahsoka/Anakin fan and I would love to read more Canon Star Wars Books.

I LOVED the first Thrawn book (canon), it is in my top 5 Star Wars books. This book I am unsure if I like or not. I do not care for the time jumps between Clone Wars era and Rebels era. The chapters with Vader are AWESOME but Anakin in this book is a big baby and acts like a little whiny punk. Thank you for the videos.
