As a person who normally is 100% on the rebels / jedi side, this book made me sympathize with some of the IMPs, but arihnda pryce is the worst, i grew to despise her more and more, in a good way. The book showed that the Empire is still evil, but not all evil, though it's leader is pure evil. Characters like Eli and nightswan were good additions, as well as the cool white haired Wullf Yularen.
The thing I like with the new cannon is all this grey area stuff. Its not so cut and dried, Jedi are good because they help people and Sith are bad because they are selfish, and as a result the Rebellion is good and the Empire is bad. The new cannon introduces a lot of depth to the more emotional, personal and relate-able side of the Empire (a connection I only previously felt when I was reading about Tank's story arc) and how the Rebellion wasn't so glorious itself in its crusade against the Empire. It just makes the Universe seem a lot more like... a universe, rather than some fairy tale with a fairy tale ending.
Avalanche yea the new canon isnt perfect but its awesome nothing is too over the top compared to legends its way more grounded and believeable for star wars and not to crazy
It is a "fairy tale" or fiction. That's what is good about it. I rather it have a lot of imagination/make believe the realism to a point we can think of it in real life terms. That's where it becomes less exciting and all imagination is gone. The Now EU was great for that. It took me to places unknown and characters that we could ever imagine.
Actually, if you read a lot of the older novels there are clear shades of grey as well as major characters struggling with the light and the dark and consequently ending up somewhere in between. Then there is also plenty of the typical good/bad dichotomy, particularly in video games, which sometimes I like to have as well. It's just that there isn't 30 years of unregulated lore in the new canon.
Avalanche I read that story too and really enjoyed it. was different from any other story. I think u meant one where Luke and a pretty blond was under cover w him and falls in love w Imperial officer. also he meets an officer he was friends from Tattooine. "Other side of the War" a graphic novel, yes?
Three chapters in and I'm in heaven remembering just how good Zahn's writing is. He's a master and it's great to see him as part of the new canon. I'm completely eating it up
Peter R Maybe he will go on to build the hand of thrawn. Jk of course though when i read the hand of thrawn duology the first time around i thought "hand of thrawn... Could pelleon unkowningly be said hand. A person molded to think similar to thrawn as a contingency?"
Fun fact, since the video mentions Sherlock - he also plays a villain in a few episodes of that. One of the few actually able to outsmart Holmes for a while. Also, he's Danish, so it's MikkelsEN, not ON, like his little brother, Mads. Just gotta throw that out there too ;) (It's a very serious crime because it makes it sound like he's Swedish)
Star Wars rebels premiere is what got me into the Star Wars universe( after the LEGO Star Wars game on my ds lmao) governor pryce’s backstory was an unexpected but a welcome surprise. From like 4 chapters from the end I caught myself wincing at the fact that I was rooting for the bad guys. Also I really like that Eli didn’t die. Since he wasn’t mentioned in rebels, I believed he would die in this book.
I was introduced to Thrawn through Rebels and I quickly realized that he wasn't someone you would want to mess with. Even if Rebels portrayed a "watered down" version on him, it came through loud and clear that he was a mastermind with a sense of honor, which made him both charming and dangerous. I can honestly say I think this may be the first Star Wars novel I will actually buy and read. Thank you for your honest review.
Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of my characters of any fiction ever!!! He is a combination of Gus Fring from Breaking Bad and Thanos. SO cunning, intelligent, complex, calm, yet ruthless, brutal and crushes with an iron fist.
there are a lot of novels regarding the star wars series. could you maybe make a list with all the novels worth reading and the order in which to read them?
Alex, my retailer sent it out waaay early. I received it March 31st. I agree 100% with what you are saying here.Thrawn is one of the best novels out there in the Canon. I hope Zahn is allowed to make more novels with Thrawn, which he is planning to. It would be a mistake if Lucasfilm wouldn't let him.
I love the old Thrawn novels, and Lost Stars is also my favorite canon book right now. I'm very much looking forward to reading this. We may share similar opinions.
My copy of this book was waiting at my door step when I came home from work. Can't wait to start reading. I had been actually waiting to hear what you thought of this book. Perfect timing. I love how Zahn used the page normally used to thank a family member or someone particularly close to them to thank all his fans that wanted more Thrawn stories.
This book turned Thrawn from a villain into someone you desperately sympathize with beyond just thinking "he's a cool character". This book took an already amazing and unique Big Bad villain character guy and developed him into a Person. Jeez I thought I couldn't like Thrawn any more but then I read this book. I know I'm at the risk of sounding like a lovestruck fangirl/fanboy but I'm such a sucker for characters in writing and their development and this book really did something to me. A tiny sliver of hope in my heart now also exists that Jorj Car'das might, in some small capacity, be canon. Thrawn mentioned meeting traders from the republic, after all.
Rebels was my first real introduction to thrawn, i was aware of him and alot of the old EU/Legends, but i was a bit Kotor and Rebellion era fan so i was never too interested in those things that came after endor. Seeing thrawn i was interested, the design they went with in his sunken but very noticeable features made me wonder if they where going to show why fans loved him. I will say i was not disappointed, the voice work helped alot but it did convey what a master strategist and thinker he was. His ideology of studying his opponents in ways most would never think in order to get very important information on how they would act was such an interesting one. I also liked seeing how he respected culture specially that of his enemy when Captain slavin suggested destroying hera's Kalicouri. His slow build towards the end, figuring out who fulcrum was, using Kallus' against the rebels, and even figuring out they had messed with his map. down to the way he almost utterly annhilated both the massasi group and phoenix squadron. I'm hoping Thrawn will stay the villain in the future because even if the rebels start winning again we know that it'll only be a matter of time before thrawn does something to bring them down.
I loved Lost Stars but I think Thrawn maybe become my new favorite Star Wars book. I was introduced to Thrawn in Rebels and he's become my #2 villain in the Star Wars Universe.
I'm very surprised as to how much I enjoyed this book. I haven't read any previous material containing Thrawn and I don't watch Rebels, but I had a great time reading Thrawn. He's such a fascinating character and I'd love to see him somehow make his way into the movies.
Can't wait to get my copy from celebration this weekend :) Thrawn was made before I was born but I've always been fascinated by the character. Really excited to delve into his character now that he's canon.
I'm not usually one for detesting Star Wars characters, but after what Pryce did at the end regarding Nightswan, that tradition just got broken. Also, Thrawn (both the book and the character) is amazing.
I plan on purchasing the book I checked it out at the library. Finished it already though I kinda skimmed the last couple chapters as it felt a bit dragged on. But agree great book coming from someone who doesn't usual enjoy reading
MATTYBE you can set up an American audible account quite easily and get all the new cannon audio books that way, I had same problem with the UK audible.
I had to do it on my PC, you have to make sure you go to the .com address, it will initially force you to your own country's site but there's an option somewhere to change that from memory or use a proxy, you then create a new subscription for the .com site, you just need a USA billing address, find one on google maps. Once done there is an option in the phone app for changing the 'marketplace' so can spend your new credits in the USA store. Unless you cancel your old subscription you'll be charged twice, also you need to spend any unused credits before cancelling, they're not saved. Hope that helps.
JoseRicoTacoNacho QuesedillaMandillaJones I read the book today, pellaeon has been more or less replaced with another character, which you will soon find out I imagine, and personally I like him more
I just finished this book and I loved it. It's the best Empire-centric Star Wars book that will ever be written. as well as probably the greatest Thrawn novel. Eli Vanto is a great replacement for the EU's Gilead Pellaeon and I am dying to see where his "path" takes him. I have a feeling it will be to a much grander destiny than Pellaeon. Nightswan and Thrawn encompassed one of my favorite tropes, the enemies that could have been friends under different circumstances. Pardon me for bringing Star Trek into it, but: "You and I are of a kind, Captain. In another reality...I might have called you 'friend.'" I wish I already had whatever comes next in my hands so I could start reading this minute!
I honestly like Cumberbatch, and think he is a great actor! But personally I think if they make a movie with Thrawn (and they really should) I would want Lars Mikkelsen to play him... He already is the voice actor, and he has an incredible pressens on the screen, so that would be my pick.
Does anyone of you know when Thrawn is going to be released in Europe? I would like to know it beacause i am from Germany and i would prefer to read the book in my motherlanguage.
This was such an amazing read, and I absolutely loved some of the references made, especially the very brief appearence of (spoiler I guess if you really don't want to know ANYTHING going in even though this is a tiny detail) H'sishi, a Togorian first seen in the Hand of Thrawn books. which I thought was really cool.
+Star Wars Explained, does the book ever mention that Thrawn had any knowledge of Project Celestial Power? If it doesn't, I've just discovered how Thrawn dies: if he has no previous knowledge of the Death Star, his suspicions within the Empire could lead to his downfall (just like in Legends). Scenario: Thrawn discovers that Krennic is operating a huge installation of planet-killing potential. Seeing how its effectiveness can be used multiple times, it could obliterate fleets, Thrawn's speciality. Knowing this, Thrawn attempts to warn Imperial Command, although being stopped by Krennic. The two converse like Krennic and Tarkin did in Catalyst, although Krennic is more like Tarkin. Eventually, Thrawn wounds Krennic and escapes to alert Command, when suddenly, a blast enters his chest by Krennic' s DT-29. Thrawn falls dying when Krennic approaches him and rips the apulates from Thrawn's uniform. The last shot we see of Thrawn is his whimpering while Krennic's glorious white cape billows the shot while the Imperial Suite plays. But this can only happen if Thrawn has no knowledge of the Death Star...
2:54 Wait so was thrawn brought to the empire when they were still using clones? The book said stormtroopers. Or did people start referring to the clones as stormtroopers before they switched?
early stormtroopers were all clone troopers yes but considering the time peroid it starts i think these are regular humans (though as shown in the comic adaptation they are using clone armor but this likely for the same reason they use v wings and venators)
Trawn--okay, where to start? Start on this newest book? Start with Heir to the Empire? Start with Outbound Flight? best to jump right in here, or go back and do some backstory?
Read the Thrawn book. Hands down in my top 3 books. Haven't read a lot of the Star wars books personally, but I have read a lot of Star Craft books which are quite good too. Also finished the Star wars Battlefront 2: Inferno squad book. Highly enjoyable read as well. The way Thrawn thinks in this book and getting his analysis on situations was super well done here. Also really liked his aides story (Eli) in this as well. This Made for two great characters with which you had 2 differing story arcs, even though they were taking place side by side the entire time. Thrawn doesn't change much through the books but you get huge insight throughout the novel that makes his story very compelling. Eli's story is much more a change and evolution in his character through the book, from things to his goals, beliefs and viewpoint on life in general. The way that these stories progressed together just makes for a interesting and compelling story 10/10. If you aren't a book reader this is a great first read, trust me on that one.
I read the thrawn trilogy and I loved him. And when I first saw the trailer of star wars rebels, I nearly cried(out of hapiness). If I was a imperial officer or stormtrooper I would give my life for his. The empire needed bad ass guys like him and I' so glad the same thrawn was brought back into canon.
Sounds good, I am real supporter of the Empire and I loved reading Catalyst and the Aftermath series learning about the Empire's rise and fall. I haven't read Tarkin yet, but I hope that it is good and maybe before going to Uni I could get the book.
Q: when you read Thrawn now do you give him that accent he has in rebels? That trailing way of talkingggggg? I didn't have that in original Thrawn books. Interested to see if I do it, in my head, as I read this.
So... since you said Thrawn and Lost Stars are your favorite new canon books so far, will you ever make a ranking of the best books of the new canon in your opinion? Would love to see that!
I love the original trilogy , those stories will always be my sequels for star wars. Therefore I've been meaning to read the new thrawn origin trilogy, and I just started the first one and I couldn't put it down. He's a very different villain, he's one of my favorite star wars characters. I'm now starting Thrawn Alliances, I can't wait to readit. I'm excited for thrawn and Vader to interact, it's going to be so interesting
I felt "Tarkin" did a good job at getting the reader to root for his success at times as well. Not to the level that "Thrawn" did though. I had one issue with the book, but will wait until you post a video with spoilers before I list it.
I got the awesome chance to meet Timothy Zahn and buy the book from him personally/got it signed. He is such an awesome guy, with an equally amazing character.
Almost done with the audiobook and enjoying it. Didn't think that I'd root for the Empire but I was. Thrawn isn't the Villain that many people make him out to be. It's almost the same with the Thrawn from the EU in that he's helping the Empire because he wants the Empire to help him and his people when the time comes. The Empire is somewhat portrayed in a bad way (i.e. Incompetent leaders and followers) and that Thrawn is a genius, along with Eli, amongst them. No wonder those two are hated. You'll be cheering for Thrawn (and the Empire) once you've read or listen to the book.
Thanks for the recommendation. I listened to it for like 6 hours today and spent one of my 6 saved up credits since I never use audible. 10/10, confused with the random girl story parts with the mining family though, not sure what her connection is though.
Another historical figure you could compare Thrawn to would be (spoiler alert for the novel): Eli Cohen, a Mossad agent who infiltrated the Syrian defense department and largely through a high level of competence quickly rose to the top becoming a key advisor to the head of the department. This is not a direct annalogy since in the case of Cohen it was a directly antagonistic country he was sent to, but it's still a similar situation.
I've read the Thrawn trilogy, Spector of the past, Vision of the future, Outbound flight, I own survivor's quest. I am getting Thrawn this weekend. Anyone im missing?
Stupendous Wave! I just finished reading THRAWN! and though I love the character and can't wait to see what happens to him in the future, I am extremely disappointed in the novel. I agree with you that it was consistent with THRAWN in the past, but the only thing that I was left interested in was ELI. The major issue with this novel, is Disney's hold on the universe, because they don't want to spoil the future episodes, but come on! either have tons of Easter eggs, such as Aftermath series or not. Though Thrown comes of calculating and tactically advance, the chapters always left the reader saying, oh, I guess that was clever. I wanted to see his innovation with tactics, things that have never been done before. Plus, I wish they has a adversary within the empire, that was on par with his abilities, some type of competition for advancement. It almost felt like he didn't care to advance, but I don't think thats the case. I don't see him as a villain anymore, more of a guy doing the wrong things for the right reasons. Plus, I wanted to know more about the Chiss, all we got was tales form ELI and they too fell short. Finally, this book would not hold up with an new StarWars fan! maybe the crazies like you and I, but that only because we are excited for new real content. Grade 6 - good writing (though I am still a Laceno fan 1st ), would only recommend to advance fans, falls short in all categories, if you are hoping for exciting Easter eggs, read Aftermath, if you want character development read the Marvel comics and if you just want something fun, exciting and insightful; read James Laceno Darth Plagues!
Seriously the best Star Wars book to date! I’m normally a “rogue squadron” or “x-wing” novel type of guy but wow! And then the audio books VA for Thrawn, Tarkin, Palpatine and Vanto were so dang good!
Great to see the author who wrote the Thrawn book, Timothy Zahn, also came up with him in Heir to the Empire. It's not canon now, but it's still a good book.
Main issue I had with the book was the Arihnda Pryce subplot. Not that it was bad, I just felt it just paled in comparison to when Thrawn was around as he was much more proactive than she was. Also it felt strange for her to have her own subplot in a book titled "Thrawn".
Albert Nguyen The idea was to cement her place in Thrawn’s life during the Imperial Navy. He is extremely competent with his job but it wouldn’t matter if he is being targeted by political power plays.

I was thinking about ordering the Tarkin novel today but I think I'll choose this
Dinojengi ja Kumi-Kalle_139 Tarkin you can go ahead and skip, not much is added to canon
Your Dad's Metal Band Maybe I'll read it after this
it's not a great star wars story but it's a great thriller/mystery novel
Dinojengi ja Kumi-Kalle_139 Cyber bully channels are cancer cancer cancer cancer
I liked Thrawn more.
This book was awesome!
Eli Vanto ftw!
This book got me rooting for the Empire. Wow.

loved Eli Vanto. wonder what is going to happen with him?

I guess we will find out this summer when the next one comes out
From the Epilogue, I guess his homeboy Thrawn got him some fine Chiss ass? :)
Peter R hopefully we will see him again
What next one?
Thrawn is what got me into Star Wars Legends so I'm glad this novel is a success.
Timothy Zahn-best author of the old EU and second best author of canon (Claudia gray being first)
I hope that they bring back pellaeon
Andree Castillo I hope so, bring back Mara Jade, Palleon, & Talon Karrde
I get a feeling the new Battlefront character is somewhat based on Mara Jade.
Galen Marek Actually, she seems to be based more on Juno Eclipse.😏
LegoTurtle Brickfilms She seems to be based on neither
They gived us Eli
Does the same actor that voices Thrawn in Rebels also do the voice acting in the audio book?
If he does... consider me sold...
I thought they made him sound to soft
Haydz The Awesome there's soft and then theres sounding passive aggressive, I just think they dialed it up a bit too much
Fun fact, since the video mentions Sherlock - he also plays a villain in a few episodes of that. One of the few actually able to outsmart Holmes for a while.

listened to the audio book on my commute to work. the narrator was unbelievable.

Eli Vanto is my spirit animal and their odd ball buddy cop kind of relationship is hysterical.
I hope Thrawn lives well past Episode 6. I'll be pissed if he dies before Episode IV.

Great review! I really enjoyed this book - the audiobook had great voices and effects/music.

Wait so was thrawn brought to the empire when they were still using clones?
The book said stormtroopers. Or did people start referring to the clones as stormtroopers before they switched?
early stormtroopers were all clone troopers yes but considering the time peroid it starts i think these are regular humans (though as shown in the comic adaptation they are using clone armor but this likely for the same reason they use v wings and venators)
Empire ❤️😉🤘🏻
Read the first trillogy, and I’m waiting for my Thrawn alliances copy now
Trawn--okay, where to start?
I just read this book. EXCELLENT storyline !
Cant watch the video because I want to know nothing about he book, but I got it about and hour ago and I loooove how Zahn decides to introduce him!
I love thrawn. ..he is so meticulous and crafty
Top 3 imperial officers
1. Grand admiral thrawn
2. Director krennic
3. Admiral sloane
This book should be a movie
I felt "Tarkin" did a good job at getting the reader to root for his success at times as well. Not to the level that "Thrawn" did though. I had one issue with the book, but will wait until you post a video with spoilers before I list it.
Not only is Empire relatable in this book, it's actually mostly competent! XD
I really enjoyed this read, & definitely recommend it!
honestly the new canon is starting to get more and more good
Like if you agree
Taika 92 fix your grammar and i'd agree
zbrown02 I just said something simple..
Grammar Nazi !!!
Yeah the new canon is great for retards and kids!!

Very happy that this book is good! Gonna try to pick it up today.
I picked this book for my book report, and it was an excellent choice🤗
I got the awesome chance to meet Timothy Zahn and buy the book from him personally/got it signed. He is such an awesome guy, with an equally amazing character.
Is there a non-spoiler review in the beginning
I'm just waiting for my library to get their copy. I can't wait!
Thanks for the recommendation. I listened to it for like 6 hours today and spent one of my 6 saved up credits since I never use audible. 10/10, confused with the random girl story parts with the mining family though, not sure what her connection is though.
Another historical figure you could compare Thrawn to would be (spoiler alert for the novel):
Eli Cohen, a Mossad agent who infiltrated the Syrian defense department and largely through a high level of competence quickly rose to the top becoming a key advisor to the head of the department.
@rexsir23: If you want the complete thing, the books you missed are "Allegiance" and "Choices of One". They are also great! :)
This is my favorite canon book so far. I have loved the others books, but this one was my favorite so far.
Reading Lost Stars, on Audible thanks for the recommendation
is there an audiobook narrated by his Rebels Voice Actor?
I LOVE THRAWN AND THE BOOK
is captain pellaeon canon again?
giorgos volaris: Good Question?
giorgos volaris Sadly no.
thats disappointing...
May we see a similar looking character in canon: Proud, competent, experienced, Calculating Captain/ Negociator/ admiral?
A. Ahmou The new guy Eli Vanto is kinda like him (he's not very high up though).
After trying to read Aftermath, this book is very refreshing.
can you please do a video on Eli Vanto. he was my favorite character in the book.
I don't blame you for having a man crush on Thrawn. He's incredibly smart and incredibly sexy.
I downloaded Thrawn for free on audible! I was so excited to get it. I have loved Thrawn ever since he was introduced on Rebels!
I wonder if we'll get to see any of the Chimaera's crew next season now that the books out. Thrawn had a lot of likable characters in his bridge crew.
Would I appreciate this book more if I read the original trilogy first, or should I start with this one?
I got it today and am so looking forward to reading it.
It was amazing!
I'm from Australia and this book is not on audible.com i just checked
As I have never read anything from the Thrawn trilogy or Outbound Flight, this will be my first Thrawn book.
*GASP* the force awakens is a retread?! Alex is a rebel supporter?! How dare you :)
So what do you think of the hand of thrawn duology
What was the dark threat he was referring to when discussing with Emperor Palpatine?
I got it through your audible link. I absolutely loved it. This is my first Star Wars novel. And yes I totally get the man crush.
How did you read it so fast?!?!
no kidding!
