hey Mike , firstly, glad you and Randy are ok, secondly, look at the fuel leaking under the pipes just before it bursts into flames whilst your cranking on it
I’d definitely do some more research on that injection system as well as see if you can find a rebuild kit or a known good unit. Don’t give up on this project!
Those back fires made me jump and when it back fire 2 or 3 times at the same time with the fire it really made me jump and I'm so glad that you and Randy didn't get burned and got no injury and I'm glad that it didn't burn down Randy's shop.😱
I've often wondered after having had started so many fires in VW's, why NO ONE on youtube ever goes up in flames? I'll never stop watching your channel!
With the amount of backfires the air flow meter plate is bent or out of adjustment. You should have played with the mixture screw. Best way to start is jump the fuel pump so it is running and adjust clockwise with Allen key until fuel comes out of the distributor ports then quarter turn clockwise until she leaks no more. After that adjust the potentiometer assure it has 6 volts and adjust duty cycle last.
First thing I am glad you two are okay that’s the important thing. Second thing Mikey did ask Randy if he had a fire extinguisher. 😂😂 kinda hard to put out a fire with a towel soaked in gasoline. 😂😂😂 I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. 😂😂😂
Hi Mike after Vacuuming the engine bay, I would of cleaned it out properly with the high pressure washer. I always do that to my car's, I never work on them unless it was clean/cleaner. Say g,day to Randy for me, keep up the good work from Dave in Australia.
Take a deep breath, that was scary!!! Luckily you and Randy are ok... Check that k-jet and all parts.. And try again, how cool to get this car driving after this episode!!!
You should start with replacing the upper and lower injector seals. Also, replace the fuel distributor fuel filter. It’s a small screen on the back of the distributor. In order to get my 300E running well after 20 years, it required upper and lower injectors seals, a good fuel distributor and and the distributor fuel screen.
Glad it didn't go horribly wrong, this seems like a similar issue I came across while restoring my 190E that been sitting for over 20 years. Might wanna try adjusting the mixture since not enough fuel if none is coming from the Fuel distributor. try jumping the fuel pump from the relay behind the battery and then as it's running press the flange until you see fuel raising from the distributor if not showing increase the fuel mixture with the Allen Key next to the fuel distributor gently until some come out. Good luck guys 🙌
Oh I see. Great advice as I know nothing about this fuel distributor. Are there any electrical or electronic controls that make the distributor work correctly and or allow it to be adjusted. That's very keen about zeroing in on the issue.
@@cliffordkinnear9705 Sorry for late reply, It is KE jetronic so half mechanical and half electronic. The only electronic part in the fuel distributor is the EHA valve ( black box attached to the fuel distributor) it richens and lean out the mixture depending on the signal from the O2 sensor / AFM sensor. Rebuilding the distributor should be your last resort as this is a very delicate and fragile job to do even with professional hand it's most likely to fail and keep leaking since inside it has chambres that are pressure up to 80psi of fuel. The solution from my experience in his case is what i mentioned in my main comment. Jump start the fuel pump and adjust the mixture untill fuel slowly rise from any injector line hole then screw back the injector line and start the car and should fire right back up. At 14:15 in the video you can clearly see the puddles of fuel all around the fuel distributor. The only surprise is why it didn't catch fire with the first two backfires.
I've gotten a lot of Bosch K-jet cars going that had been sitting for years. The warmup regulator is most likely the problem. It's connected between the central horizontal fitting of the fuel distributor, and the fuel return line to the fuel tank. Once you know you have fuel pressure, you need to check the control pressure at the horizontal fitting coming out of the top/center of the fuel distributor. If this is too high, not enough fuel will come out of the injectors, because this pressure puts resistance on the plunger. Do this first before messing with any adjustments. If the pressure is correct, then pull all of teh injectors out of the head and see if they are spraying. You could just put your finger on the air meter and try to force fuel into the engine too.
Wowww...that fire was just horrifying....OMG...So dangerous 😳....MWM you are lucky not injuring yourself...you are so close to run it up. Randy put too much gas onto it... regards from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 🇲🇾 😀 😄
Looked like way too much starter fluid and the overspray helped to ignite and spread the fire once it backfired. I think that a engine wiring harness and ignition wires would be needed to feel safe. Could be a lot of hidden damage also.
Wow !! Even knowing it was coming made me jump !! However… it was literally soaked in fuel all around the throttle bottle. You could see it in shot right as he sprayed it the last time all pooled up. I think she will run.
5:58 - The debris on the cowl is back. But, you cleaned it all up in the field before you towed the car into the garage? Then at 6:31, it's gone again?
Have a fire extinguisher nearby and get it running. I still ended up saving a 1994 Seville after the same thing happened to me. Grabbed a new fuel injector wiring harness and learned my lesson. It doesn't look like anything was damaged. I believe the backfire was a result of starting fluid being dumped down the intake, not a fault of the car. It was pooled throughout the entire intake. It's clear the explosions traveled up it. I honestly think you would have had it running if fluid wasnt dumped down the intake. Everything on those old Benzes is metal, your lucky. No sh*t plastic.
my first impression is that one of the instale valves is not seal correctly, in CIS systems can cause back fire and hard starts. it's a continuos injection system so if a valve is not seal the entire intake manifold ignite and produce that symptom. the trick here is advance the ignition rotor to the top right, car can start but with no power... the after a 20 min running move the rotor to standard position and start car with no issues. cheers!
If it was backfiring, you got a timing chain/blet issue. I am suprise with the amount of starting fluid Randy was shooting in there the heads didn't explode. Better to use that pre-mix gas for weed trimmers, snow blowers, stuff for use with 2 cycle engines and use a ketchup bottle like to drip a little down. Reason why to use this is if the motor has been not running for long time the little bit of oil in it will lubricate the insides of the motor, it might smoke a little till it burns out of the engine, Derick from Vice Grip Garage does this. You should have the intake hoses or air filter back on before you try to start it, to avoid a fire. I love the video Mike great funny content and the music top it off. I ever come down there I be happy to help you out, if I can avoid the hospital. I am getting admitted tomorrow Monday, pray for me.
A sober lesson, glad you guys are ok, could have gotten out of hand very quickly and it's clear Mike was somewhat shaken. I'd take this one outside for the next attempt with a fire extinguisher close at hand after you've checked all the pipe work for leaks whilst cranking with the coil disconnected.
That darn fuel distribution system is blocked, it needs to be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner 🤔 to clear those blockages. The Engine sounds very good when it ran on the starter fluid. I hope the fire didn't damage any wires or hoses on the fuel distribution system 😲 I think it can be brought back! You got this Mike!!!
This is a clear example of what not to do, the base of the gasoline distributor was drowned in gasoline, and you did not see it. always have a fire extinguisher nearby. Still, it's very good content.
If I recall the K Jetronic unit had four plungers that I think had laser cut grooves. I may be wrong on that air flow moves the plate. It uses a fifth "injector" for cold start. I don't think it has injectors per se just what's metered coming out of that unit down a hose into the intake. I regret not buying that model at the time. So it's good to see one.
Omfg your editing is hilarious. Thanks for the morning laugh Mike 🤣 don't get rid of it please! It's in decent shape and you don't see them very often.
I know little to nothing about K Jet & KE Jet systems, but I do know they need tuning. They are not plug & play. was on a bit of a downer when i watched this video and i have to admit that fire really made me smile hope you do get this will tell you more tomorrow your fan grumpy GOOD ON YOU RANDY
Excellent video. You can get a new catch phrase from this one. James Bond always liked his martini “shaken, but not stirred”. Now we know you like your wires “charred, but not burned”.😂 Seriously, you’ve worked too hard on this one to give up now. We know the engine ran on the starter fluid, so most likely you have either a fuel leak you didn’t detect, causing the excess flame-up on the engine intake and/or a blockage. I doubt cranking the engine before cleaning it out caused it, as your fuel pump wasn’t working. It could be varnish from old fuel, or if left to sit with alcohol in the fuel, as we are forced to use in Maryland, that stuff can rot rubber seals and o-rings causing leaks. Best of luck resolving this one. We have faith that you will succeed!
Definitely continue!! Pretty confident you'll get her started, but I do believe those k-jetronics don't like sitting around. P.S. I miss the old theme song!! 😞
As others have said, it appears your timing is off. I had an old Firebird that was doing the same thing and it was a timing issue. It looks like there was a bunch of gas from the fuel distributor leaking and then when the engine backfired, it ignited. Don't give up on it yet.
Been there, done that before more than once working on K-jetronic stuff. Those old systems take a bit of luck and knowledge to get them going after being parked for long time
Keep the 190 MB!!! I noticed the throttle butterfly ONLY opens (air supply to the engine) when the engine is in the start phase. I would push the butterfly open manually then spray the starting fluid down into the opening. You're getting pressurized fuel to the distribution assembly but from there it's not being allowed o go to the fuel injectors. So my guess is it's a combination of an electrical issue and a hydro-mechanical issue of the fuel not getting to the injectors. I don't know if you know this but WatchJrGo (John) is having issues with getting his Jaguar sedan to run more then a few seconds. Coincidentally the Jaguar has the same fuel injection design as the 190!! I would give him a call and compare troubleshooting strategies.
I see quite a few folks suggesting timing and I agree, it could well be. But, also in the running must be the seating cleanliness of the inlet valves. One at least is always open when parked for a long stretch and will 'rust out' a little. When the car fires on that cylinder, ignited gasses fire straight back up the inlet manifold. Not the first time I've seen it happen on all sorts of vehicles.
