    Uh Dude you have to cycle a lever gun like you mean it! You can't baby the darn thing! I have three of these guns and they work flawlessly! Hold it upright and cycle the lever quickly not so wimpy!!

      To me it looks like you simply got a lemon. I do not own a Rossi but have been thinking about it.
      I know they are not top drawer leverguns bug I've seen far to many positive reviews to dismiss them based on your experience.
      Send it back I guess. .
      Thanks for the video.

    All of you that are Rossi defenders, occasionally, especially with manufacturing today, a lemon will get out. The man did not say that all Rossi firearms were bad, but the one he has sure is. Rossi needs to get their quality control in line. Sending a rifle back with a screw missing, damage to the stock, and other issues does not win public confidence.

    I have to say my Rossi operates like a dream and after several hundred rounds still cycles correctly. The last couple of rounds pushed through the gate can be difficult with fat fingers, and the opening can use some softening of the edges, but I've not had the same problem you are having. I have always been leery of the Taurus products, but this gun has proved to be a quality piece and dead-on accurate.

    I scored a 92' Rossi in 357/38spl. I had the same issue from picking it up. I disassembled and throughly cleaned it. The shell carrier has a spring-fed carrier stop pin on the left side as you are facing the top of the gun mine was outside of the groove. The illustrated parts breakdown doesn't show proper alignment but was an easy correction putting it back in the groove. I've fired over one thousand rounds 38 spl and 357 since correction and have never had a misfeed since. Hope this helps.

      Even a real 92 will jam if you cycle the lever with the gun upside down.A temporary fix is to take the mag tube spring and follower out put the tube end cap back on and point the barrel up at at the sky and let gravity feed the rounds to the lifter,you can get 11 rounds in without the spring and follower and it will fungtion just fine.The plastic follower could be the problem,replace with a good steel one.

    We bought two for SASS shooting in .38/357 , one has been perfect out of the box , the other double feeds .38 loads , have reloaded our .38 with 158 gr RNL and , when loaded at 1.51 length it works well , though old at shooting and reloading , we were new to a crimp sensitivity of a tube magazine so you may have to make sure you have a firm grip . I've diassembled the rifle and polished the contact point and removed the bullet stop from the left side of the receiver and polished the contacts , allowing the arm to reach farther out and it does seem to have helped , I may go in again and see if it would make sense to remove a little more metal and not be so shy with the polishing .. also removed 3 inches of magazine spring since it is a 16" barrel and the spring is the same on a 20 incher .. shouldn't have to but it's good to know your gun , and yeah, I'm a girl, but a long time shooter /hunter/ competitor ,IDPA .. really enjoying SASS and the people involved , the Rossi is a quick handling rifle and the horn sights are PERFECT for SASS . paired up with a couple of Ruger Vaqueros and a Coach gun and it's PARADISE . hope you stick with it and work the bugs out without dealing with the factory , it's a simple design and a pleasure to "go in" on .." COWBOY UP " and get in your weapon , it will be satisfying and increase confidence ...

    A friend of mine says Rossi 92s are like horses. Most folks can't tell a good one from a bad one just by looking at them but when you get a hold of one you know pretty quick. He bought one and the loading gate broke after very little use and sent it back to Taurus. Several months later they informed him that they didn't have to parts to fix and let him pick out another gun. The new one has been great. Bottom line is Taurus QC is not very good and neither is their repair department.

      Well, I heard from Rossi today that it might take 2-3 months to get my rifle back to me...really, 2-3 months to fix a rifle? Are they sending to South America by tramp steamer to get it repaired? Come one, they can do better than that.

    • @Will-ws6gb
      @Will-ws6gb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ammo08 same here, mine wouldent cycle a single round, never even got to shoot the damn thing. Rossi told me it would take 2-3 months to fix it, i lost my shit. It was in the auction pile that following weekend, at least i got some of my $ back out of the damn thing! I have had to rma two other rossi firearms in the past, both their youth model shotguns, one in 410, the other 20. Both would pop open and fling shells into your face right out of the box, apparently is was due to improperly machined locking blocks...on two different rifles...built years apart...in two different factories... Safe to say im never buying a rossi ever again. 3/3 lemons!

      That's typical lead time estimate from anything under the Taurus banner. I had to send in my Heritage Rough Rider revolver for repairs; because Heritage is now affiliated with Taurus, that was the estimate I received over the phone. It was about two months, but they did get it running well again.

    I have had some of the same trouble. The loading gate is insanely stiff and sharp. I have been slicing my fingers loading. The bottom edges of the breach bolt are also very sharp and cut the top of your hand and thumb if you are not careful. And I have had issues with cartridges getting stuck while trying to load and having to use a push tool to shove them in rather than my finders or another cartridge. I will say though that once it is loaded I have had no issues cycling and firing.

  • @meanchili1
    @meanchili1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Trust me... stay away from the Rossi 92 in 357mag/38spcl - unless you know 100% that it works correctly from the start.
    Otherwise you will spend countless hours and a lot of $$$$ trying to fix something that should be working right from the start.
    I purchased one about 2 weeks ago. There were several problems from the beginning - the main being it wouldn't feed 357mag ammo correctly (bullet jams into the top of the chamber) Everyone kept telling me "Lever it like you mean it" (just like robert johnson, below) - basically saying hard and fast. All this did was cause half the bullet to get shaved off by the top of the chamber while loading, or the cartridge jam in the chamber mouth, go vertical, and get pushed back down into the receiver, which locked up the action.
    So, I went to a gun store and explained what happened. The owner had another on the shelf. We took it out back and tried cycling all different brands of 357mag ammo, even his reloads.
    That rifle did the EXACT same thing.
    So please, the next time someone says "you have to lever it like you mean it" or "you have to completely disassemble it and smooth everything out" - just ignore them - they aren't very experienced lever gun owners.
    ****NEVER BUY ONE WITHOUT HANDLING/SEEING IT FIRST****
    And before buying one at a gun store - ask if they'll accept a return and give a refund if it doesn't work right. You'll know immediately if it won't work on your first cycling.
    If they won't accept a return or give refund - ask the store owner if he will cycle some 38 and 357 through it to make sure it works correctly. If he won't do it ***DO NOT BUY IT***

      +Mean Chili Good advice on checking the guns before you buy them especially with Rossis and Remlins (Remington made Marlins) which have known quality control issues. If a dealer won't let me check a gun and doesn't accept returns of defective firearms I take my business elsewhere.

    I've got an r 92 from 2001, pre safety. For about 11 months, when they first opened the Brazil plant, the guns were perfect. After that they went downhill. Mine is a 24" octagon barrel, so it holds14 rounds of 38, or 12 of 357. Shot 3" groupings at 50 yards right out of the box. I replaced the plastic magazine plunger with a steel one. Only change I made. I totally love it.

    • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a really nice rifle. Take care of it, it should last for 100 years or more. I think that's how companies used to build them, they wanted them to last 100 years. Now days, too many want them to last 5 years so you'll be another one.

    • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, never get rid of it. If someone on my bench had returned a gun in the condition we received this one and it wasn't the first time they'd done it, I'd show them the door. I don't know what actually happened in this case, they just told us to return the gun and they'd look at it... we then went to the local dealer where we bought it and he replaced the screw himself and we accepted the dinged stock as we've added to it since. Just a disappointment for the manufacturer to damage it first and not us.

    • @kcomst
      @kcomst 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The issue is probably not a faulty employee, but faulty, primitive machinery, manufacturing processes that use the "eyeball approach" and no quality control. Just looking at the tooling marks inside the action, all the parts are very crudely fabricated and look like someone had to take a file to them in order to make things fit.

    • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No amount of practice would have made that gun work. It needed a lot of smithing which is now done and Rob is using it in SASS competition. I have no doubt you could have gotten a good one 12 years ago, the cold hard fact is this gun was sent from the factory in garbage condition and their "repair" attempt was a joke at best. Really... you think more practice will make up for parts breaking and falling off, metal shavings and spurs inside the gun and returned with missing parts after a warranty repair? If you got a good Rossi, that's great, we didn't.

I shot BP in it so much that it started jamming just like yours and it took me a while but I finally tore it completely down for intensive cleaning and polishing and it's working fine once again. They are a pain to put back together though.....I just use the Rossi for hunting now...45 LC but it will take the hotter loads just fine.

    Are my eyes deceiving me or is that round nose ammo in a lever gun. I thought they were supposed to have flat nose. About 3.11 into the video

    • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Rablin This stuff is flat but barely, it is fully round except an area not much larger than 1/8" right on the tip to keep it from hitting the primer of the round in front. Problem is, it's not the best ammo for a lever gun but because it still tends to turn in the chamber if given too much room to move. A round with a good and completed flat nose works better. We have ran the better ammo in the Rossi as well, still jammed, failed to feed, double feeds etc... Now that it has been worked on it does OK if you cycle slow with deliberate and complete action, get in a rush and it is a "jamb-o-matic" making it USELESS for cowboy action shooting.

    • @plinkbottle
      @plinkbottle 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I just took a Marlin 357 1894 stainless steel out on the first shoot and its back in the gun shop getting worked over. It fired alright but wasn't ejecting properly. The shells weren't popping out the side and I couldn't tell if it was a fault or just the stiff action made everything too slow to work properly. Using a federal hollow point. Getting bullets past the loading gate also took quite a bit of effort.

    • @plinkbottle
      @plinkbottle 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I got my marlin back from the gun shop today. The problem was a broken ejector spring. This goes back to a time when I was just shuffling the action and it jammed. The lifter would not bring the bullet from the magazine tube up to the barrel. It was fixed by moving the lifter with a screwdriver. Id say that the broken ejector spring was inside somewhere and jamming the works. Nobody saw it fall out, but it seems to be gone and a new one has been installed.

  • @danielwheeler3280
    @danielwheeler3280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason that shell come flying back is because he didn't feed it all the way in. Ofcourse it's going to fly out when there is more pressure on the spring!

    I was looking for a Marlin 1894 in .357. Took two years to find one. I came close to buying a Rossi, but from all I’ve heard and seen recently, I’m glad I waited and paid more than twice what I would have paid for a Rossi for my Marlin 1894CS. I also like the side ejection port on the Marlin vs the top ejection port on the Rossi. Will be interested in finding out if you get it fixed, or sell it.

      The loading gate broke off in a hundred rounds, Rossi forced us to send the gun in (we don't ship parts out), over a month waiting
      time for the factory to fix it, the factory returning it with dents, scratches, a missing screw(send the gun in and we'll put a new screw in), and the loading gate not being fitted to the rifle(it took me two hours to fit the gate correctly).
      The dealer was helpful, when I took the gun in and showed him the missing screw he pulled one of his For Sale guns, gave me the screw off of it and dealt with Rossi himself.

    The wood dimple can be taken out using the wet cloth and iron method followed with an oil refinish. But, Taurus should have never sent it back to the customer in such condition. Sorry, Taurus. That's an "F" for customer service and quality control. I think I'll buy the Marlin, instead.

      As we have continued to clean up this gun, it is more and more obvious the problem is the build of the gun and some lack of follow through on the design . It's like it was designed with the thought "ehh, that's good enough" and then shipped unfinished. A real dis-service to the firearm and not a good commentary about the company.

  • @ytchieft

    I have one of these that I bought last year. I have the same problem with loading it (rounds shoot back out) and sometimes they just quit going in with only 3-4 rounds loaded. I don't have the probem of double feeds but if I don't work the lever like I'm mad at it, it doesn't load correctly. Well, sometimes. Sometimes it cycles fine. It also throws the empties like it's mad at me. I like to reload but play hell finding the empty brass. I knew it was a bargain basement rifle (as somebody else pointed out) but expected better. With that said, I'm not ready to give up on it yet. I've watched a couple other channels (one guys from Australia or New Zealand) that go into depth on tearinng them down, polishing parts, putting in new/better parts, etc. I enjoy learning how things work so I don't mind to much, but I am somewhat disappointed as I'd seen/read some good reviews. I'm glad most people seem to have gotten good, functioning firearms because it gives me hope if I decide to buy another.

      I highly recommend the steves guns dvd and parts for fixing/tuning the Rossi 92s. The fact that yours spits out rounds / gets stuck closed most likely means that the factory didn't fit the loading gate.

The only way I could get 357mag to feed was by trimming the cases down to 1.2" from 1.28", and seat the bullet to a overall length of 1.5" instead of 1.58". That's almost the same as my 38's of case length 1.145" and overall 1.435".

    • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ours is the exact opposite we have to load our .38s to 357 min length before it will feed. If a standard 38 gets mixed in it will jam up hard.

    Had a '92 in .32-20 that had the same problem when I was a kid in '62. just had to adjust the lifter a little. The .38spl/.357mag Rossi I have now has always run great through a couple of years of Cowboy Action. Your gun sounds like a lemon and they should do the right thing and replace it.

    A few 357's had the chamber and ramp reamed a little at factory to help get them to feed better. Indicating they do run some through them at factory to check.
    Suggestion taking some blanks in to shop to see how the load before buying. Given they are suppose to be made with CNC precision since 2000 it shows how magazines and chambering is still a finicky art and sometime prone to the odd failure.
    The 44's seem not to have been touched. Bigger shell line up better maybe off the lifter.

      We did call after we got it back the first time... they wanted us to ship the entire gun back for one missing screw. We then took the gun to our local gun shop and he replaced the screw from his stock. As for the cosmetic damage, we told them about it and yeah I could rant (in retrospect probably should have) but it is minor and at the time we just wanted the missing screw replaced.

You will learn from all this and be even better from the training down the road. A lemon on any model can occur. The key is how good a customer service do you get when you have a problem. I am one who had an XDS 9 mm get in a safety recall and have to be sent back. It did make me think Springfield tried to do the right thing when it was discovered and tried to make it right. • @ShootFastFun
      @ShootFastFun  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll need to review the rules to make sure something else doesn't exclude it but in the rules Quote" “Rifle Caliber” competition rifles must use traditional, period, rimmed cartridges. No cartridge chambered for use in any SASS approved main match revolver or rifle may be used in the “Rifle Caliber” competition, except the .56-50. Thus, .30-30 (.30 WCF), .38-55 Marlin & Ballard, .43 Spanish, or .45-70 Government cartridges are legal"
      However, most people shoot the same caliber in the rifle they use in the pistols.

    I am the [NOT] proud owner of an R92 that sat in Rossi-Taurus USA customer service for 7-1/2 months with NO WORK performed. While the outside is shiny and pretty, when you look at the internals, it's apparent that Rossi uses primitive machinery and manufacturing processes that rely on the "eyeball approach" with no quality control. Internal parts are very crudely fabricated with tooling marks that look like someone had to take a file to them in order to make things fit. I would bet that an original 1892 has better fit, more care and attention to detail than these "replicas" that are priced like real guns.

    I shot mine for the first time yesterday (Owned it for a year or more) at the range and then at a CAS match. It loads rough unless I am very "authoratative" with the lever. (semi wadcutter .357s, I think round nose flat points would be better). The loading gate is horrible, the gate door is soo strong, it was cutting my fingers to pieces trying to load it, and then rounds would pop back out the gate. Mine needs work for sure, but was nice and accurate and easy to shoot. Maybe with some slicking up and lighter springs it will be less of a nightmare loading it.

    Believe it or not, trying to fire a lever action like Chuck Connor is a sure way to tear up a good gun. Side by side that the Rossi is tighter and, in my opinion, a better made gun than the Winchesters being made after 64. Also, when you Jack a shell in there, Jack it in there. Pop that lever forward and ram it home. You might have a lemon but my guess is that most of them aren't. I want one in 44 mag with a 16 inch barrel. Two questions to any of you guys out there. Is the Rossi 92 with the 16 inch barrel legal and where in Oklahoma can I get one? If it's legal, I cant find one at Bass Pro or Academy. Only place I've seen them is on videos on utube.

      For one, the rifle is only handling rounds closer to the length of .357 mag. 38 special is having problems and we've kind of always known that. Now, it seems the retaining pawl isn't engaging properly and allowing rounds to feed out when they shouldn't. We've cleaned the parts and oiled it, trying a couple of things today to see if we can at least get the longer rounds feeding properly again. If we do, we may have to shoot the .357 mag rounds this weekend.

      I don’t know about the Rossi, but the manual for my Marlin 1894CS says the minimum overall length for .38 Specials is 1.400. The .38 Specials I have are all 1.445, so it feeds .38 Specials just fine, but .357's are more fun. The Rossi may have a similar MOL for .38 Specials. Just a thought.

      As a weekender occasional shooter it probably would earn more respect. I do have to keep remembering we are asking it to do more than it was originally purchased for... but still it should do better than it has IMO and Taurus should never have returned it with a missing screw and cosmetic damage either. It was purchased to have, not spend it's life being shipped back and forth. And their crazy "we can't ship you a screw, send the gun back" rules have pretty much re-trained me to approach Taurus with caution.

    I recently bought a rossi 92 in 357 mag. It worked well with both 38 special and 357 mag for the first 150 rounds. Now it double feeds with 38 specials. Very annoying. I'm not thrilled with having a new rifle that needs to be tweaked to function correctly. Build the dam thing right at the factory. These issues are common knowledge. Taurus needs to address the problems, and incorporate the fixes into the production.

    Just make sure if you buy A Rossi, don't get it online like I did. There were enough cosmetic and quality issues with mine that I decided to call customer service, which is Taurus. They were super nice, said to send it in so I did. After over 6 months of them done nothing, I gave up and told them to send it back. They then said they would have to report it to ATF as an unsafe firearm. I also bought a Taurus Tracker in 357 that it turned out the fluting was not milled right. I had to threaten them in their Facebook page as I considered it unsafe and it could be a legal issue for them if I got hurt. This time they said to send it in and replaced it with a good one, that so far I've had no issues with.

    I own a 24" Octagonal barrel, color case-hardened R92 in .357 Magnum/.38 Special. The only problems I've encountered have one source: user error. It's more accurate than my M1 and Krag carbine at the range I'd be using it at. When oiled properly, I can work it just like the Rifleman. And hell, it looks cool.
    I've read that the nickel-plated models suck. And for what, $300-$400? You got what you paid for. That's how it is in this world unless you're buying surplus Soviet weaponry.
    Buy one of the carbines that aren't nickel plated, sure it'll be a little more expensive, but it's worth it.

    It's the same problems that winchester had with the model 92. The 94 solved the issues. Never push the rounds in fully with your finger. Push the round in part way. Use the next round to push it in leaving that one part way in.
    Do this until full using your finger to pushing only the last one fully.
