    I don’t think it’s correct that you need to be Latinx to write “magical realism.” The genre did originate in Latin America but that was about 100 years ago at this point. Most other cultures have adopted the genre. It would be like saying you can’t have High Fantasy unless you are European. If you are interested, I would highly recommend translations of Haruki Murakami for a look at Japanese interpretations of magical realism!

      Even non-latin writers were writing it over 100 years ago (eg Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis published in 1915).

    I'm pretty sure that you don't have to be Latinx to write magical realism. It’s a genre of literature that’s used by authors like Alice Hoffman, Haruki Murakami (Japanese), and Olga Tokarczuk (Polish)

    • @annahill99
      @annahill99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It was popularized by the latinx writing community but you’re right, it’s not exclusive to them historically. It was originally an art movement and literarily it started back as early as Kafka and it’s been in literary fiction from all over, like you mentioned.

    I think if you liked Sadie by Courtney Summers then you will like a good girls guide to murder by Holly Jackson. Both of these books are a YA thriller and when I was reading a good girls guide to murder, it was minding me of Sadie alot of because in both books it has to do with someone being missing and or dead.
    And I think if you liked Geekerella by Ashley Poston then you will like Follow me back By A.V Geiger. The thing that reminds of each of other is that a person is communicating to an unknown person for a whlie.

    Can someone please explain the magical realism & Latinx author thing? I don't understand how a specific ethnicity of an author is a requirement to classify their book in a genre?? 😶

    • @marianadias6769
      @marianadias6769 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm pretty sure that's not correct
      Magical realism can be written by any author
      She probably got stuff mixed up 😅

    • @SkinByPresley
      @SkinByPresley 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I thought it sounded weird too. I looked it up and it’s said to be coined by a Latinx author some 100 years ago. But what I think I understood was that it was inspired by french romanticism art, but then the term was created to describe a genre of art that a German artist created as an alternative to expressionism. The german artist Franz Ron was first to coin the term magical realism for art and his term was later used to describe portraits of Frida Kahlo and then it worked its way into literature by Latinx authors. I have not found anything to say you have to be Latinx for it to be considered in that genre if you write it though. I feel like that would mean you’d have to be Italian to properly study physics or astronomy because Galileo Galilei is considered the father of physics and astronomy and was Italian. Or you’d have to be an ancestor of Tolkien to write fantasy. Literature is a form of art and I think art is one of those things that you can have an origin story but if a person feels the art and can create it according to the specifications of that genre of art, it should be considered as such. That was way longer a reply than I thought I had 😅

      @tomboyz151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SkinByPresley lol, thank you! My friend & and I have been doing research on it and looking up articles & that's basically what we found, as well! A lot of the explanations are just saying that Latinx authors made magical realism popular in the 1950s (which was influenced by French surrealism & was originally coined by a German guy), but that claiming the term as their own is basically cultural appropriation. 😅 But thank you for confirming! 👍

    As a latinx woman living in Argentina, I don't think you need to be latinx to write magical realism. What I do think is that people tend to categorize all the books that have a little bit of magic in a contemporary setting (but not enough to be paranormal or plain fantasy) as magical realism. But the genre is not just that. In magical realism, the "magic" elements are used as a metaphor for political and social issues or for personal conflicts that the characters are dealing with. So most books that are considered magical realism (mainly by people from english speaking countries) I would say are actually surealism or fabulism, because they lack this methaforical use of the magic elements.
    Also, bear in mind this is just my opinion as someone who loves and has read a lot of this genre, nothing more.

      I think that’s a really good explanation of how it gets conflated in English fantasy. There are lots of similar sub-genres like Enchanted Realism or Fabulism that also get conflated as Magical Realism even though they usually lack the political commentary. Sub genres are helpful when analyzing but at certain point, the term becomes commercial and is used as an umbrella term and we start getting these types of mix ups!

    Salman Rushdie writes magical realism, so does Haruki Murakami. Neither of them are latinx.
