  • Disclaimer: This historic film was produced during the apartheid era in South Africa. It contains propaganda elements that explicitly or tacitly endorse racism and racial separation. It is presented solely for historical purposes, to help document in part a period of terrible repression.
Presented by Caltex, this 1959 profile of South Africa presents an outline of South African history is followed by descriptions of the Union as it existed in that decade: the Boers and agriculture; measures to advance the Bantu; the Cape Malayas and Indians; mining and industrial developments. New towns. The film completely ignores apartheid.

Yes, I'd say that the majority of people in "South Africa" are far better off today than they were in 1959 (if you believe the insidious horror of government Russian propaganda of today).
And if you do not like the facts then it is always very easy to call it "propaganda" especially if you offer no "real facts" to set the record "straight".
(my guess is you've never even been to South Africa, not now or in the past and rely totally on the BBC for your impressions and opinions of the country).

When watching this remember it is in part just a film to paint South Africa as a more stable country than it really was in an attempt to persuade the West to continue overlooking the racial discrimination that the Europeans were already abandoning. Remember this is happening during a time when many European nations were granting their African colonies freedom. That is why there is so much emphasis placed in this documentary that South Africa is a mature "nation". Why the global industrial output is so stressed. It is produced by a nation becoming painfully aware that their policies are becoming increasingly frowned upon by their fellow European brothers. Don't be swept away by cheap nostalgia. Beneath the seemingly ever-prosperous industries and trade, socially the wheels were already coming off as other racial groups were growing impatient with the Boers' reluctance to allow for blacks to integrate into the urban environment, and a white minority growing ever fearful of a communist uprising as the waves of independence were moving across the African continent

@@mansamusa6505 What land? The white people of South Africa NEVER EVER took land that belonged to someone else. All tribes in South Africa were settlers and settled on land they identified as unoccupied and belonging to no one. So did the whites. For example: the Zulus have no claim to Venda land, the Swazis have no claim to Xhosa land and the Tswanas have no claim to Sotho land. And in exactly the same way, NO black tribe has ANY claim to WHITE land. You clearly have NO clue of the REAL South African history. It must be terrible to live a life of such unbridled ignorance just spewing Russian propaganda from the previous century.

This video is produced by periscope for white population consumption.
The truth about South Africa is that the land is peopled by the Khoi San, Khoi-Khoi and the Bushmen later called Hottentots in the West of towards Kalahari Desert and the Zulus and Vendas in the West and Central of present SA.
They are largely nomads and farmers in small scale way before the Portuguese seamen arrived in the cape followed later the Dutch voyagers, none of these people know what was going in the interior and hinterlands before their arrival.
The first Dutch that came to the Cape in the mid-17th century, was to establish a stop-over for his peers. He met the Khoi-Khoi at the beach as they arrived, after initial strange interaction, they exchanged meat and fresh water, this was told the Khoi-Khoi leaders to their Children and grand children and even the Dutch voyager team leader recorded the interaction in his person diary which a few historians have written about.
    th-cam.com/video/PlKO9MQ7dEk/w-d-xo.html
Anyone still propagating the ‘empty land fallacy’ in living in fools’ paradise.
On Crime, the Apartheid system built on what it inherited from the colonial system, and created two unequal societies in SA, one was the white Suburb which is well groomed and low crime area, well policed, blacks are not allowed in except as maids and servants with passes and another society called the Black Township(similar for colored and Asians) riddled with poverty and crime which even the local newspapers are not allowed to report the crimes in townships to give a false face that all is well with SA at the time, all dissenting voices are arrested and imprisoned.
So if you grow up in white suburb definitely crime has increased compared to today but if you grow up the black townships crime has actually reduced as they are better policed now.
The same way Anglo-Boer war concentration camps were bad for the Boers and the British were monsters for trying such, same way Apartheid was really bad for the Africans the Boers are monsters for trying such nonsense.
White south African were fed large doses of racism growing up, none of them knew that Nelson Mandela was a university trained and practicing Lawyer in 50s and 60s, they were told he is a terrorist that should die in Prison. Let that sink in!
    Please educate yourself.

Rubbish...: Äpartheid" wasn't "built on the Colonial system"....!: In fact it was the exact opposite of the Colonial system..!
South Africa is an EMPIRE of no less than 11 nations created and brutally FORGED TOGETHER by the British Empire into ONE Colony, which the called the Union of South Africa, This they did by systematically overpowering each and every tribe and nation in Southern Africa robbing them of their land and nationhood and subjugating them to the British crown by brute force through wars of conquest and the barrel of the gun. The last to fall were the independent Republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State.
Apartheid was a system which did the exact opposite...; it sought to REVERSE Colonialization and to dismantle the Union and break up the Empire. The first thing that "Apartheid" did was to FREE all the nations subjugated by Britain and to return their land to them which was taken away by the British Empire.
It was the British Empire who took their freedom away and subjugated them, NOT the Afrikaner. It was the British Empire who took their land from them, NOT the Afrikaner. The Afrikaner endeavored to set the nations free and return their land to them, NOT to "OPPRESS" them like everyone was lead to believe (by BBC and British propaganda).
The Afrikaner himself was brutally oppressed by Britain and fought hard and long for their freedom. And they thought everyone else would appreciate theirs as well
Prior to the British "Union of South Africa", there were NO Zulus or Xhosas (for instance) in the interior of the land (Orange Free State and Transvaal) neither were they in the Western Cape.
The Xhosas were confined to the Eastern Cape along the South Coast and so were the Zulus, in Zululand.
Apartheid endeavored to honor the tribal territories as they existed before the establishment of the British Empire and return the land accordingly.
And "Apartheid" went even further...; instead of just dumping the land on them (like the British did with Lesotho and Swaziland), the Afrikaner undertook to lead these nations to independence, spending BILLION of S.A> currency on building industry, infra-structure, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges etc. etc. to make them viable.
Apartheid South Africa launched one of the biggest housing schemes the world has ever seen to provide housing for black people in South Africa. The built an entire City (Soweto) and planned a second on (Norweto) which was eventually cancelled due to opposition.
They also built the Biggest Hospital in the Southern hemisphere (Baragwanath) or any where in Africa or Australia, South America etc.) as well as schools etc. etc.
Apartheid did NOT perpetuate colonialization, the African people did it themselves...; while professing to "HATE" colonialism, they elected to keep the British Colony together and resisted breaking it up and dismantling the colonial unification with all their might...!
(a little hypocritical and convenient I might add).
The southern tribes (Zulus and the Xhosas etc.) had NO claim or rights to any of the land to the North and the interior before or during British occupation. Only after the formation of the "new South Africa, they gained rights and passage to the entire "South Africa" as per the old "Union") from the Zambezi in the North to the Mother City in the South...! NOT any time before 1994...!
It is a MYTH that Black people occupied the entire country form the Zambezi to the Cape of Good Hope prior to the arrival of the Whites....! Blacks simply did not have the numbers...!
South Africa is a vast country with wide open spaces (even today with a population of over 61 Million people).
When the white people arrived, the interior of the country was wide open and vacant for the best part. The black population was small and widely dispersed. It consisted of pocket of people concentrated in certain areas
They simply did not have food supply to sustain large populations. What "farming" they had was mostly subsistent farming, mainly the keeping of a few livestock which roamed freely in pursuit of grazing. The people were nomadic and they followed the animals to grazing pastures.
It all changed, however, with the arrival of the "Boers"(.e. farmers from Dutch decent) in the interior..!) The Boers immediately set out to establish farms and to plant crops. And for the first time the blacks had access to a huge food supply and their numbers exploded overnight, growing exponentially.
Prior to the arrival of the white farmers, NO ONE tilled the soil and planted crops. The Boers introduced Maize to land which became the staple food for the black population.
And the blacks came looking for work on the farms and in the mines and in the towns which the Boers established. No one forced them to come or to work. They came looking for a living...!
The Boers did NOT have "maids" or "servants"...; the British "masters" did. Don't fault anyone who offers someone else employment to feed their families. They ere not "servants" or "slaves"...! Stop wit the propaganda and the pity party...! They worked for a living, voluntary...!
The black populations of S.A. would NEVER have reached the size and the numbers they do today, was it not for the food production by the white farmers.
In 1959 (when this video was made), the black population was about 9 million people, out numbering the whites by a ration of 3:1. (today it is around 25:1).
This is after more than 120 years after the arrival of the white farmers in the interior and the establishment of food production farms. It is also after the massive influx of people from Mozambique and Zimbabwe, Malawi etc. which flocked to S.A, to find work in the cities, factories, farms and the mines established by the Boers.
Imagine what it was back in 1850 BEFORE the INFLUX and before the population exploded due to food production on industrial scale introduced by the Boers..? It couldn't have been more than a couple of hundred thousand or so...!
And the Zulus and Xhosas were confined to the South coast areas, and the Swazi and Sotho in Swaziland and Lesotho to the south and to the east of the country next to Mozambique. The Venda and the Tswana further to the far north etc. etc. And in very small numbers.
There was NO population in the interior that exceeded 1 Million people before approx. 50 years after the arrival of the white farmers in the interior.
In fact, the first area that exceeded 1 million people in South Africa was the Western Cape where the Dutch farmers have been growing food since 1652...! That is a FACT which would surprise the vast majority of people. Contrary to what everybody is made to believe or would like to believe...!
No one has ever even stacked two stones on each other to build anything before the whites arrived. They build temporary shelters out of sticks before that. They only started to build mud huts after they saw the farmers building houses. There were no roads or bridges. They haven't even invented the wheel yet before the Europeans came. And no one tilled the soil and planted crops.
So just how did they fill the entire country as you would like us to believe and sustained their numbers...?!
Stop, with the butt hurt and thinking with your emotions. And stop with all the hate and propaganda of the past. Consider things rationally and face the facts straight on...!
Apartheid did NOT suppress or oppress you. Apartheid freed you from the British oppressors and gave you your freedom again...!
And Millions of White people voted "" Yes" in the referendum signing away their dreams of self determination for the sake of peace..!
Just how or we doing on the peace front...?

So concentration camps of the 1902 anglo-boer war was bad but Apartheid was very good.
So to you Apartheid is the BEST thing that happened to south Africa, yet millions of people were displaced from their homeland, hundreds of thousands were imprisoned, forced into exile, killed in prison, forced to work in white farm for free, families torn apart by single male hostels for black miners.
Any, are you related to Dirk Coetzee, former head of police branch Vlakplaas, who openly admitted to killing uncountable number of people and roasted their bodies over a beer party to maintain Apartheid and how old are you?

South Africa in 1959 had a lot of nice things to be used in good propaganda. Such propaganda of 2022 South Africa wouldn't be possible.

Very cool video but you can see the racial discrepancy in the video, particularly in the beginning where they say bantu tribes moved South while the Europeans moved inwards, which is not true lol.

Europeans brought commercial knowledge into a lush and fertile country. The technology from Europe was more advanced and this caused the unbalances. Results? Master and servant. Not a matter of skin colour but who had the commercial and technological prowess.
