  • Disclaimer: This historic film was produced during the apartheid era in South Africa. It contains propaganda elements that explicitly or tacitly endorse racism and racial separation. It is presented solely for historical purposes, to help document in part a period of terrible repression.
The Johannesburg City Council presents “After Sixty Years,” a circa 1946 black-and-white film narrated by Frank Secker that tells the history of the South African city. Johannesburg was named and established in 1886 two years after the discovery of gold on what had been a farm in an area considered a bleak and barren wilderness (mark 01:14). The film re-enacts that historic discovery starting at mark 01:41, and we learn how the news spread quickly, leading to gold hunters flooding the area aided in its development. Mark 05:55 shows the viewer images of Johannesburg’s new town tall, constructed around the turn of the 20th century, as well as scenes from the city’s 40th anniversary (mark 07:00). There are scenes of the ongoing underground drilling for gold coupled with how, after many intricate processes, it is refined and turned into gold bars (mark 10:20). The film continues with scenes of the bustling city and an explanation by Secker how it continues to grow, with scenes from city hall and city parks, sporting facilities, zoos, and other sites. A look at the city’s transportation system follows at mark 15:20, as are looks at such civic enterprises as markets and nursery schools (mark 18:39) and a hostel for girls (mark 19:03). The film also visits places such as self-contained Orlando Township (mark 20:50) and shows life among native non-European residents. As the film nears its end the viewer is treated to a glimpse of nightlife in Johannesburg, starting at mark 27:18.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

It is easy to judge South Africa in this time period. The reality is that the original English/Dutch settlers provided the expertise and work to build prosperity for everyone. The highest standard of living in Africa for all races. .

Today the world is all too eager to attribute humanity's fallen trait to the white man alone, having conveniently forgotten the abuses of the old world from Babylon and Persia all the way to some Muslim nations today, it is as the scriptures state...
      Jeremiah 17:9
The heart _[of fallen humanity]_ is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
It's a damning accusation against us all that no sooner does one group because of genetics, colour , opportunity or wealth gains the advantage over another, he will abuse and make merchandise of them, it's in every single one of us and shall remain until the regeneration.
      Acts 3:19-21
19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,
20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you-even Jesus.
21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

There were only a few here and there. Some parts of South Africa, there were none. Many of them came from other parts of Africa. As you saw in the areas like the Witwatersrand. All beautiful and empty lands. But some black people believe everything belongs to them, just because they are black. They leaders told them everything the white man build, belongs to them and they still believe it till today. Very sad, as many white people are now being murdered and driven out.

The narrator makes so many microaggressive comments against black people. Calling them non-Europeans or natives, as if they are savages who don't belong on their own land. Then referring to their centuries old custom of using "witch doctors" for medicine as being inferior to Western medicine. I am a traditional African healer, and I know better. Western medicine has proven to be inferior to African, Eastern, and indigenous American medical practice. Also, he says it is "surprising" that black people are smart enough to read and speak in multiple languages. *Face palm*
