I really like the Milwaukee 6in1. It's a favorite. I've been carrying the Spec Ops folding retractable utility knife for about a month now, just to try it out. It's a 2 step opening process to move the blade out. No screwdriver. It has a window punch of sorts on the butt end. It's thick. Aluminum body. Has a pocket clip. Best suited for jacket pocket carry, due to it's size. Has multiple blade storage (2). I carry a small prytool along with it.
While it isn't full size, I've been getting great use from my Gerber Prybrid (the hobby knife version). Murders through the hundreds of boxes I have to open in a single day
I have a Prybrid X, too, but I can't find replacement blades that fit it. All #11 hobby knives I find have additional material towards the base of the blade that prevents it from fitting my Gerber. What blades are you using??
I'm becoming more utilitarian and simple these days and I like those Gil-Tek ones. And they're made in the USA! Thanks for the rundown. I have the Gerber EAB but I think I'd prefer one of those light plastic ones on my keys.
These are all top choices, although I am not personally a fan of the Milwaukee. The first several are particularly good. Did I mention that I do not care for the Milwaukee, due to its massive size? Anyway, there is basically something here for everyone. Based on that wall of Milwaukee behind you, I'm guessing you like the Milwaukee utility knife, but the thing is unnecessarily bulky, and about the size of a multi-tool. There is one other that has a craft blade that is certainly not for everyone. I see too many people get their fingers cut with it, just as they to with Amsler's Hurricane. Personally, I would have swapped that tool's spot in this video for a scalpel blade tool, which would have covered everything. That Milwaukee is a very popular utility blade. Not to my taste. I don't know that you could leave it off the list, though. I'd like to have seen something like the Knipex break-off blade utility knife on this list, perhaps in place of one of the tube tools. There is also a small keychain blade that should eventually make a list like this. Probably still on Kickstarter, though. Or maybe gone. I don't remember where I got mine. I cannot justify the size or weight of that Milwaukee anywhere. One of the utility knives has very Shard-like vibe. I have about half of these, and one that is similar to another. I'd forgotten about them, because I no longer carry slide blades. I only had one of each, though. I may try some different materials.
Ever since I got the bitdriver fastback I'll never consider another utility knife. I even made a plastic 6mm hex "sabot" that can hold a scalpel blade in the bitdriver and I covered the indention on the side with a thin 1mm piece of styrene to hold an extra scalpel blade. And then i filled in the indented writing with black, so the handle is all smooth. I just love it for my cutting needs in the hobby workshop! (it is featured in my custom edc video if you are curious...)
I thought a workpro would be on the list but I guess not I’ve had it for a while and it’s still going strong, it’s another one to consider it’s all metal solid build for $15 you get two of them.
Ohhh man I love the absolute brilliant simplicity and one piece design of the gil-tek! The gerber style one is also really cool especially for the price.
I love my Milwaukee and Gerber EAB. Also, the Fiskars is excellent, and they released a tiny version. And the Roxon Phantasy can be a nice utility blade holder, but also take other blades. I also like the simple pen-style hobby knives. Looks like a clicky pen but has a blade. What about Havalon stuff? Also, the multi-tool aspect of this concept is interesting. Havalon Evolve, GOAT tool, Roxon Phantom, all good choices if you're into replaceable blades. Another homerun, Dominic. I am re-evaluating my edc and these videos will come in handy. Thanks, mate. :D
Until recently, I carried a Korecraft Everyday blade on my keys. I backed it on kickstarter originally. It's a folding craft blade holder, basically but includes a locking design, single handed open and close, and is reversible for lefties. Can recommend. Great package opener.
Interesting. Ty i learned alot. However, i think you veered off the path of standard utility blades... There are so many designs out now, would have liked your perspective on some more of them. Fyi, i agree with another comment, i am only interested in clean utility blade holders, not multi tools as i already carry a leatherman which I'm happy with. However, the exacto blades open up a whole nother vista of tools, so I'm glad you showed them.
I'd pick the Coast Shift for its sexy design, all metal materials that offer 70% razor blade length for 1.5cm-thick carton boxes. However, for the "true" utility power, I'll stick with the Milwaukee fastback. Man that 2-headed screwdriver is something that costed me half an hour running around my workplace just to find one. And the bottle opener? Fuck yeah!
I agree the coast shift is very cool and would be a great one to have . But like me I carry the Milwaukee 6-1. Every day I since it was introduced and the original one I bought . I will use this one till it breaks. I work in a repair field where it has helped me so many times I carry a small altolids tin with mm and STD allen head bits and torx and 1,2,3 phillips .
After seeing one of your videos I bought an Milwaukee Fastback. Its pretty expensive over here in Germany, something like 27 Dollar... so I got one as a bringback from a friend who was in the States. And I am quite happy with it. In fact it replaced my Leatherman Wave in my pocket and is now my perfect edc knife/screwdriver combo. My Wave is now in my backpack. Only issue I had, was that the bit of the Fastback rustet in my pocket, due to sweaty pants in the summer and the bit was hard to exchange due to the rust. So I had to replace it. But all in all the best tool I ever had for my work day. (I mainly use a knife and a philipps driver, so a full multitool isnt really needed and I have my Wave or sometimes my Surge and some other little things like a Knippex mini cobra in my backpack)
i got a ruk s in blacck ano aluminum and it has not left my pocket for very long in that time I LOVE THIS THING I got the clip adapter and put a mxg gear clip on it for gits and shigs and put it to a whole other level highly recommend.
Great Top 10 choices! I’m going to try the Sidewinder because I want the addition of the flat and Phillips drivers. I’ve carried the WorkPro stainless with DeWalt carbide blades for more than a year and keep coming back to them because they are so easy to carry inside my pocket standing or sitting.
Ive got an aluminum RUK, a Milwaukee 1505 and a Screwpop utility knife (those are fantastic too. I keep mine in my wallet). I gotta say though, im very impressed with that pen by crkt.
Hi Dominic...Good video, thanks! I have the Milwaukee & the Gerber....I also have an older Husky with a pocket clip & sheath that can hold extra blades in the handle...nice & solid...
Have you revisited this topic recently? There are a lot more options available today. DeWalt has a slim Atomic knife with that same lock you mentioned on the new Craftsman knife. Super slim and tip up carry. Anyways, would be cool to see a new video going through many of the best options out now!
The titaner raven is a really nice utility knife It uses olfa ckb2 blades, which aren't necessarily easy to find in North America, I've found. The blades are much thicker than standard utility blades, so I've just been sharpening them regularly to keep an edge.
Kind of surprised you took the tacray over the prybid x as they have similar designs just different sizes. Also surprised the otacle utility knife pro wasn't here I liked the first one but wasn't a fan of the screw removal. But the pro is honestly less ergonomic but much more convenient to change blades.
Lots of good options. I just got a utility knife from fiskars. There's.multiple sizes, I got the small one. Uses a button lock similar to the Milwaukee, but has a rubberized section on the handle which I really like. I'd recommend to check it out too.
I like the 1500 fastback, but am starting to dislike the flick out operation and want to try the slide out Fastback but can't find it anywhere and am concerned about it being too wide. Even if I needed / wanted a bit driver on my utility knife, the cap lifter built into the 1505 makes it 10000% a No-Go for me. I had the Gerber EAB lite and generally liked it but had to stop carrying it because they're not bead blasted stainless steel like you'd assume, they're actually plated with something and on mine that thick plating started to peel off and it cut me. BTW as a lefty I can use my middle finger to flick out the EAB via that blade retention screw .
another excellent video! next round maybe check out some of the 9 and 18mm utility knives from Olfa the blades are really sharp and made in Japan also the Knipex CutiX snap blade knife.
So I used to have a Stanley Outdoorsman with an edc knife blade, and a retractable utility blade. It was really useful but it broke and I discovered it was discontinued. Is there anything like that that isn't cheap junk? I don't like the utility knives that deploy like a normal knife blade, I prefer the kind that slides out of the handle
Love your content. I've been looking for a box cutter that uses an Emerson wave opening or that can be modified with a zip tie like spydercos can. Love the ability to deploy it one handed straight out of the pocket but I'm awful when it comes to blade maintenance so a replaceable blade emerson wave system would be ideal. Looked around for any options myself but came up short if anyone has recommendations
I think it has a proprietary blade, but I recently got the "olight otackle" (I think that's what it's called) fom the Halloween mystery package. Even though it's small, I've been pretty impressed with it. I really like the way it feels, more than the tpt slide which I also own.
I don't think it's a proprietary blade, but it's very non-standard and hard to find, which kinda completely defeats the idea of a utility knife. Really poor design decision, in my opinion. They could have made it a few millimeters deeper and it would have fit standard blades. I'll never understand that one.
the Lichamp 6 pack, you get 6 for $29 so 6 bucks each. would be nice if you could just get one or two at a time. Give 5 away as stocking stuffers maybe?
@@d2cuadrados510 you might be right! I thought I remember a new yellow knife, but it could have been orange. You can understand my confusion, when Klein keeps switching colors…

Some of these look pretty neat. But im still carrying an old Rexford RUT. I had to add a lanyard bead to get a proper grip however. I've actually found it works pretty good to cut drywall and open paint cans. Great little secondary work knife when you don't want to completely f up your main blade. It carrys in pocket pretty well, no clip or slip.
Not budget friendly, I think I'm going to have to get one Arena Titanium Balisong Butterfly Knife Box Cutter Razor Blade Utility Knife with Pocket Clip
I have a ~10 year old compact husky that is comparable to the Lichamp. Small dimension/2.6 oz. Home Depot still sells the "Husky compact folding lock-back" which looks similar. Doesn't suit my needs, but I really like that RovyVon design.

For Titanium, what has become my favourite is the Olight Otacle Pro. So well machined and fills the hand nicely for such a compact tool.
