Careful, James. Today it’s pour over coffee; tomorrow it’s a $1,000 espresso machine. Coffee is a dangerous and expensive hobby. I’m definitely not speaking from experience…

My friend only had a poor over coffee maker and complained about how long he had to stand there so for Christmas I gave him a French press. That was 7 years ago and I still see it out in his kitchen.
Hi, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. Also I’m totally blind and I appreciate you describing what things look like and thank you again for reading the recipe amount and how to make them hope to hear from you. 2:51

Hey, James! I am a Kitchen Gadget Gal! Not so much for appliances like these, but what I guess I'd call gadget tools! I have a silicon thingy that looks like the old "Chinese Finger Torture" toy to peel garlic, which is a wonder! Garlic press, mandolin of course, & even citrus peelers with a tiny blade for scoring! I've had a lot of letdowns as well. All this to say that I love watching your demonstrations so much! Thank you for testing things out, so that I don't have to!! 💜
The bubble waffle maker worked really well. I may have to look into one of those. Could just dip the balls into syrup. The good thing with pour over is you can control the process as far as the water temp. With the steel filter you will get more body from the oils in the coffee that paper filters often hold onto. If you don't like that, you can use a paper filter inside the steel one. Ideally you wet the grounds first then wait like 10-15 seconds for them to bloom a bit. The other thing is grind the beans just before brewing. I can't drink a lot of coffee so I prefer the coffee I do drink to be as good as it can be and generally do it in a pour over or French Press.
I LOVE my pourover set. What you said about the pourover flavor being a bit more complex really comes in to play with high end specialty coffee. It definitely extracts a lot more of the nuanced flavors. Would recommend for sure
That coffee maker is usually referred to as a Chemex and traditionally uses paper filters. Been around since the 1940's and is always a reliable way to make the liquid we're all addicted to
My family has been making pour over coffee using the plastic ones with a paper filter over a cup my entire life. I always find it interesting when someone thinks we are weird for making coffee that way, it's a perfectly fine way to make a quick cup of coffee and it doesn't require any special machinery.
@@psychonauts0 Boiling water and plastic probably shouldn't mix. Plasticizers, microplastics, and depending on when it was made, BPA. You may want to consider a glass option.
The bubble waffles here in Bangkok are formed into a cone and while preparing they use a thinner batter and level it off to the bottom plate and then closer and flip it
Really like the pour over coffee method. My kitchen uses propane for cooking, and we have a lot of power outages we still are able to cook. The pour over method really comes in handy, and it tastes so much better than using a aluminium pot and is great to take with you on camping trips.
Next time you make coffee, put the device on a scale and set it to ml and zero it out then add water. This will get you a more consistent brew. I haven't used one of those before but I see them on youtube when people make coffee. I might switch up to this sometime soon as opposed to using the pods. I did use to do a french press for my morning coffee. I just can't use a normal drip coffee maker since I will slowly drink my coffee and I don't want it to burn.
Great, this review is biting me in the butt lol My kid saw me watching, wants one, and now since I know it works I can't use 'it's probably crap' as an excuse 🤣
Do like my waffles, I don’t know why they aren’t more popular here in the uk, usual to have flip the whole unit while cooking (agree) it’s always good to see you using past products you’ve reviewed . And it seems we’re now drinking more coffee than tea in this country it was a major news piece! Enjoyed the review 💯🤙
Next you can try a paper coffee filter like for a Chemex and drop that in. It makes for an even better coffee "texture" because you get fewer fine particles, and cleaning is even easier because you just drop it all in the bin and there's no mesh to wash. And then you're a real Coffee Nerd!
This isn't meant to be used like cold brew... However, plenty of people, have two different carafes they use. One with a more fine filter that helps catch any of the grinds that make it past the first pour.
The pour over meathod most definitely is kinda specific but works incredibly. Paper filters are necessary. A slightly larger grind if you can get is super helpful. Regular store grind is super fine, percolator grind is just a scoatch larger and can improve the brew results. 😊
Coming from Hong Kong, it’s a lot of fun seeing you review something closer to home. The recipe is probably different though. It should be crunchy on the outside and chewy soft on the inside after cooling. And it does come with a ton of different flavors these days!
We had a ceramic pour over coffee maker that sat on top of a coffee pot at our off-grid cottage 40 years ago. The stainless filter is an interesting addition.
Pulling on the cable of any device which had a power source that may be tugged upon for any reason is okay, so long part of the cable strain relief relies upon the plastic housing of the board with channeling for the cable. Many controllers before the USB renaissance of modern controllers used this trick to have the wire wrap around a couple of plastic pegs / bosses (occasionally, one of which is screw-fastening the shell together) for keeping the cable from being ripped out.
I bought a tiny pour over set (400) from Temu and I like it more than my French press. Preground coffee seems to be too fine and clogs the filter so after the first pour and dump I rinse the filter and continue. I grind my own beans coarser and it works better.
So, I had found people had tightened the wooden collar around their Chemex’s tighter so it wouldn’t flop around and that let to this heating problem with the handle. There is a sweet spot where it stays slightly open but attached to its neck so it allows air in and you can close the collar when you use it but your hands aren’t being burned. I could imagine, since this is a knockoff version of a chemex, that they could’ve overtightened this at the factory it came from.
I've had a pour over for years. I keep it in case my regular coffee maker dies and I have to get a new one. I've used it many times and it always makes a great cup.

I'm thinking that you did not make a lot of coffee back in the '80s because that's when pour over coffee really was popular. But they didn't have the metal filters then you use the cone paper filters. And the mugs that we used were kind of large base ones with some anti-skid stuff on the bottom If you've ever watched Star Trek deep Space nine it's like they got every left over coffee mug from the 1980s and use them in Quarks bar😂 The waffle maker however it looks awesome and I think I might have to gift myself one for Christmas
Coffee is unique in that different varieties will produce different flavor nuances when brewed at different temperatures. So while it is important to compare equal water to grounds for both, it is also important to check the temperature, and know what kind of beans you have and what their 'best brew' temp is.
I use Clever (or something like that) contraption, which is a cup for a similar process, the main difference is, you absolutely control the time your grinds sit in your water. As it sits on the table, it's a cup lined with a paper filter, as soon as you put it on top of the cup you are going to drink from, the bottom opens and your coffee filters into the cup. It's a very low fuss, and very high quality result. When I consulted my coffee loving friend, I just wanted something better than pouring boiling water in a cup with a spoonful of coffee grounds. With this process I get coffee which is much better than most things I can buy from a cafe or something. I purchase very decent beans, and even counting the price of filters each cup costs a ridiculously low price, it's some cents per cup.
I like that waffle maker! I can picture the kids pulling it apart as a snack. I have a pour over coffee maker that sits on top of my cup. I only drink 1 cup a day, so it is perfect for me🥰
Thanks James, I will give the waffle maker some consideration for the holidays. Do you have the link to the online recipe for printing out? Thank you in advance 🧇☕🙏
I'd like to see how you cleaned the poor over coffee and the bubble waffle maker. Both of them don't look easy to clean. I've tried a different poor over coffee maker, I went down a deep rabbit hole of measuring out the freshly ground beans in grams, and measuring out the water in grams and getting the water temp to a precise range, all those variables can change the way the coffee tastes.
I would have wanted the PB version a little darker. I also agree that it seems uneven. Ive always wondered why we dont just pour hot water over coffee grounds.
My wife has a similar coffee maker but it is setup to make one cup so you put the filter on your coffee cup so great for making one cup. Where the coffee maker is better to make a pot
I see that on the first waffle, because you keep turning it over the same direction and causing the wire to start twisting already. You need to keep in mind that you should flip it one what and then the other the second time to keep the wire from getting all twisted up!
Wrong dude , those autodrippers do not let the coffee BLOOM and just let the water fall " drip " in one go withouse a pause , that's why with a autodripper youre coffee will always taste more bitter . 🤮🤮👎👎

The one nice thing about a pour over pot is if the power is out you can still have coffee if you have a gas stove to heat water. Have you tried a French press? I would love to try the bubble waffle maker. I'd need to put some tater tots in there. 😂
About cleaning the coffee maker: Don't make yourself more work than needed. Pure coffee (i.e. without milk or sugar) doesn't leave much residue, and what it leaves is harmless. You can just rinse it with a bit of water to remove smaller particles that made it through the filter and be done with it. And even if you don't, you'll only get a powdery residue buildup that can be wiped away with a moist paper tissue easily.
I use the chemex pretty much every day. I wouldn’t recommend using the metal filter because it will not filter out the things you want to filter out. Research shows the paper filter will take out the homocysteine which is not good for the body in high levels. Also, it makes cleanup a lot easier and they are naturally compostable. Either way, coffee brewed with a chemex is the way to go.
I've seen these waffle makers in the thrift store, but I've never seen the bubble waffles made until now! I guess those people weren't happy with them. Maybe if I find a deal on one, I'll try it now.
I prefer a pour over coffee with freshly ground medium roasted Costa Rican natural process beans with water at 90 degrees Celsius and a paper filter. 1:16 ratio by weight.
maybe a weird question but is this a US thing that some appliances don't have an on-off switch? i can't remember coming across anything which you are supposed to unplug to turn off.
Lol. Pour Over Coffee is just regular coffee. If you look at a regular coffee maker, it does the same thing. The water comes from the top and through the coffee and filter into the jar/mug 😂.
Almost all coffee making using the regular coffee grout creates regular coffee. The taste and quality depend on the grout itself and not the method. Except espresso. There, the taste comes from the method used.
I would be tempted to just fill the bottom of each dimple, in order to make eggs that are not connected. You should try that and let us know how that works.

7:13am Welcome to the wonderful world of pourover coffee!.......Because you own assorted measurement test gadgets, I'd like to suggest you compare the temperatures of the electric drip coffee versus vs pourover. (I don't have an accurate enough thermometer.) ..... Normally, electric drip coffee is subjected to higher temperatures. One source estimates 20 to 30 compounds that actually contribute to coffee's aroma, some of which disappear under excessive heat. ..... My current pourover method is camp coffee, named because it's❤❤❤ used at campsites. Hot water is poured over the grounds, the coffee allowed to sit for a few minutes, and filtration the final step.
I bet the bubble waffle maker would work for cake pops too. I'd probably put the batter in a squeeze bottle or a pastry bag and fill the individual holes, though. I'd just have to be fast before the 1st few start cooking too much. Maybe start around the outside, the middle looks like it cooks more... Cake pop makers exist, but the 1 I've seen was 1 of those little Dash minis and only make a few at a time.
I have an extra plug with a switch for my waffle iron and other things that don't have an on/off switch. Very practical.

About cleaning the coffee maker: Don't make yourself more work than needed. Pure coffee (i.e. without milk or sugar) doesn't leave much residue, and what it leaves is harmless. And even if you don't, you'll only get a powdery residue buildup that can be wiped away with a moist paper tissue easily.

Buying the cheapest coffee maker is almost better than the most expensive ones.
The taste difference is just the placebo effect. You think it's better just because the method feels more advanced, pluss the price is pretty steap.
I recommend stirring the coffee before you pour.
I knew it! i could spot a TOOL fan from a mile away lol :)
Just give me one of the old percolator coffee pots that sit on the stove 😊
How long does the coffee in the glass pot stay hot?
I would be tempted to just fill the bottom of each dimple, in order to make eggs that are not connected. You should try that and let us know how that works.
Beard is looking on point!
I kind of wish the rview included a "Use without a flip" test. MOre so with the end comment on how annoying it was to flip it. I think it woudl be interesting to see how they are without a flip.

Cake pop makers exist, but the 1 I've seen was 1 of those little Dash minis and only make a few at a time.
have you seen or heard of the

The pour over coffee is the vinyl record version vs the coffee maker being the CD, Can you cook a burger in the waffle maker?
Waffle machine should hold in the batter as long as you hold the handle closed. (Leave the chord alone). Is the coffee better?
This vid was SO fast paced did you change editor? I thought i was on 1.25x speed. I liked the slower pace.

Thank you!
I thought that waffle maker was going to turn out to be a takoyaki maker instead 😂
