That has some of the best character development in fiction. Shit, Musashi's whole story is him evolving into something more than just a swordsman. Go back and reread Vagabond.
Alexander - B249 Read both AND watched the manga's. The Beck anime is better then the manga also. Gutts has the most brutal indepth evolved history in the manga. He doesn't just develop as a character, her first develops as a boy to a man, then from a cold shut in into a man capable of caring, and thats ALL before he even starts developing as an actual character.
One thing people forget about realism in berserk, is that although Guts is pretty much overpowered, the creator does care about the internal logic. It's not just dragonslayer that resides in the astral plane. Being branded + his willpower is probably the reason why Guts can handle that sword. In Berserk universe, the astral plane is shaped by people's will and thoughts, and since branded, guts lives in both planes (he works like a bridge between dimensions), so it makes sense that as a supernatural being of sorts, he can use that sword and is no longer just a normal human.

Keep in mind that when Guts first got the dragon slayer he could barely swing it without falling over, Berserk tends to be more realistic than most fantasy animes\manga. He gets the shit kicked out of him a lot, he's considered baby tier compared to the God hand and skull knight.

What I love about Guts is that he manages to feel OP but also human at the same time. He's not the most powerful character, but just the fact that he's a human and has achieved so much scares his enemies, even if they're beyond him. It's why the Godhand are more interested in him than someone like Skull Knight. They know how strong Skull is and know his potential, so they feel comfortable with him as their enemy. Guts however is an unknown because he beats opponents he shouldn't.
Any time real life starts seeming like it's too much, it's nice to get a bit of perspective. No matter how bad things get, it's all but impossible for it to get _that_ bad.
I'm pretty sure Berserk has it's own game that everyone's heard about. It's called the Dark Souls series. Oh yeah, there's also that Berserk Dynasty Warriors game that came out.

Berserk is definitely in the more "realistic" side when it comes to physics compared to DBZ and naruto, despite him being able to wield a 400+ lbs sword lmao! highly recommended read. the spectrum nexus has all the manga chapters out there and there are 3 OVA anime and a new anime series that just came out.

Berserk makes the big swords work imo. When ever Guts swings it in the manga you could feel the power as he cuts through 4 men in full plate armor, Unlike in other anime or manga where it feels weak.
Something great to is how only the Dragonslayer is shown to completely bisect people. His old swords always stopped at the middle of the torso and left the enemy to bleed out, now he cleaves through half a dozen man and a pillar with a single swing.
Nothing can make an enormous, heavy swords work if you actually know about armed combat in real life. If you want a weapon that uses weight to its advantage you're looking for a blunt weapon, not a sword.

It actually rips through its targets due to its utterly ridiculous weight. When you can swing 400 pounds of sword at the speeds Guts does, you don't need an actual edge. Think of the amount of kinetic energy that thing would generate. Every hit would probably feel like a small meteorite to the face.

There's nothing special about him other than the fact he seems to know how to handle guns. Take his armor away, take his guns away, he's done for. Guts is a beast even defenseless and unarmed. Not really dissing doom guy but it's kind of like trying to compare Musashi Miyamoto to the Whte Death.

the thing that gets me is that Inferno appears if the sword is in danger, but Gutts walked away after killing Nightmare so the sword was fine. Inferno was just being stupid

(At 5:53) 1: that clip from the near end of Berserk Golden age 3, (these episodes are around an hour long like hellsing ultimate) that's not dragonslayer (it's normal size that belongs to the Skull Knight, 2: Those throwing knives were Judeau (the blond with the short. ponytail standing hold a mug earlier) and 3: Rickert (being a young blond with short hair (2 years later his grows to a short ponytail like Judeau) him, Guts, and Casca the only survivers of the Band of the Hawks and the youngest member of the Hawks stays with Godo and his adopted daughter, Erica, goes from Mercenary to Blacksmith and looks after Casca, in fact, his before Guts goes on his journey, Rickert "built" that arm for Guts and put a Magnet in it for Guts to have a grip on the sword.

For what it's worth, Guts had difficulty using Dragon Slayer when he first got it, and Miura wanted to design a giant sword that had weight behind it that only a wrestler could reliably swing, even if just once.
The biggest reason why Guts could use Dragonslayer so easily is cuz he used many other long swords back in the past while in the Band of the Hawk, each sword better than the last. That's why Guts could swing Dragonslayer like it was a friggin light saber. His metal arm also has a magnet in the palm so he can use it with both hands, adding more momentum to its already destructive power. Btw the buster sword is not as heavy as it looks but someone made a real steel replicas of Dragonslayer weighed 50lbs, no joke. Made Buster Sword too, they were just magnificent. Guts' abilities alone measure up to superhuman levels. That berserker armor is very handy as is it highly dangerous to use on a regular basis. You saw how that arm twisted back in place, it's like a built in Iron Maiden on the inside to reinforce broken bones without feeling pain and another positive modifier but you'll have find that out yourself. I just love Guts' equipment. Enjoy Berserk
the giant swords are a bit much, even so everyone reeeeeal needs to read berzerk at least once. its one of my favorites, right up there with hellsing and rurouni kenshin.
funnily enoughthe whole demon fiasco with griffith and guts experiences gorwing up are backstory iirc. the manga starts a few months after those events but arent told til later. nightmare collected the shards at the beginning.

I was like WTF when I watched the Eclipse. imagine seeing your friends get devoured and your romantic interest get raped in front of you, while you are being held off by demons. then forcing your arm to get cut off just to save the one you loved.. That Eclipse will never be topped by dark moments in anime or Manga..

For what it's worth, Guts had difficulty using Dragon Slayer when he first got it, and Miura wanted to design a giant sword that had weight behind it that only a wrestler could reliably swing, even if just once.

apex2000 it's just a normal iron hand with a magnet in the palm, allowing him to hold the sword with an extra hand. But he can't control the fingers.
The biggest reason why Guts could use Dragonslayer so easily is cuz he used many other long swords back in the past while in the Band of the Hawk, each sword better than the last. That's why Guts could swing Dragonslayer like it was a friggin light saber. His metal arm also has a magnet in the palm so he can use it with both hands, adding more momentum to its already destructive power.
Btw the buster sword is not as heavy as it looks but someone made a real steel replicas of Dragonslayer weighed 50lbs, no joke. Made Buster Sword too, they were just magnificent.
Guts' abilities alone measure up to superhuman levels. That berserker armor is very handy as is it highly dangerous to use on a regular basis. You saw how that arm twisted back in place, it's like a built in Iron Maiden on the inside to reinforce broken bones without feeling pain and another positive modifier but you'll have find that out yourself. I just love Guts' equipment. Enjoy Berserk

the giant swords are a bit much, even so everyone reeeeeal needs to read berzerk at least once. its one of my favorites, right up there with hellsing and rurouni kenshin.
