I feel like an under-rated feat of guts' is when after fighting the kushan army, fighting alongside zodd to take out the emperor, being struck by lightning, falling hundreds of feet and taking so much damage the berserker armour DEACTIVATED, he got back up despite being utterly exhausted just to talk smack to a different army of demons for no other reason than to prove a point
I never heard of Guts before this and I thought Nightmare had this in the bag. Then I decided "hey let me read a few chapters of Berserk to see what this Guts guy is about." *Oh dear sweet salty Christ, Nightmare never stood a chance.*
Really puts in perspective how weak of a backstory Bat’s is actually, especially when you compare him to other, seemingly similar characters i.e. Guts.

That's cute, but cute can't help a city block-tier character beat a multi-continental character. There are no plausible means by which Guts can win this fight, he's just way too outmatched.

@D Moll Mmhmm. I get the feeling a lot of people didn't really read between the lines of what Guts does. He's not really the Doomguy/Doom Slayer archetype where he just slaughters demons. If that was the case, I guarantee you the God Hand and Femto would be a non-factor. Narratively, he's a struggler. He just so happens to be better at it than most in his verse.
Also to anyone confused as to why Nightmare's Soul Wave didn't kill Guts immediately by devouring his soul and haven't read Berserk. I should tell you that those who have read Berserk will know the rather terrifying reason why; Griffith, upon becoming Femto, claimed ownership of Guts' soul with the Brand of Sacrifice, so Griffith owns Guts' soul, and nobody else can take it or sacrifice it in any sort of way. Meaning that Griffith was one of the major factors in why Guts didn't die.
I like how at the start when they cross blades the first couple times before guts overpowers him for the first bit nightmare has to look at his sword for a second like"you good? You working? Cause this shouldn't be happening.."
@@bigmyke2008 Guts says that he hates Vargas in that arc because Vargas had his life ruined by an apostle, and Guts is disgusted with him because he sees his own failure to overcome the supernatural. You can see this when he reflects on his own metal arm while remembering Vargas' story. Guts does not hate the weak, he just hates the things that have been done to him and reframes them as weakness so that he can overcome them with strength. If you want to see someone who steps on the weak, look at Griffith.
At the start he hates what he sees as weak, including relying on others, but as the story goes on and Guts looses more and more to the armour, he begins to trust others absolutely, notably trusting Schierke to guard Casca and Serpico to watch his back.
I think that's what makes Guts such an awesome character for me (even if I'm only on part 136 of the manga). He doesn't care who or what's in front of him. He just fights and struggles through it.

Totally. Through pure stats, Gut’s should have been instantly killed by Souledge. Hell, through just stats, any of the demons Guts faces on a daily basis should kill him. But Guts just keeps on going.
Focusing on the nature of the characters and not their stats creates inaccurate results. Otherwise I guess Master Chief can beat Guts because his narrative is that his luck allows him to overcome the odds not matter how unfairly stacked against him they are.
@thehighestorder2868 in actual combat, you can never simply go by stats anyway. Just like in life if you discount the "human element" you're missing a piece of your opponent. Like small groups of people who struggle against far superior military powers to outlast or wear them down because they're fighting for something they truly believe in.
4 months late but that’s mostly how using fighting game sprites can harm immersion, as they just flip the character the other way. I’d he was facing to the right of the screen he’d look perfectly normal. I don’t remember who it is but there’s a street fighter character with one arm that seemingly switches depending on which way he turns.
I noticed that even the movies and anime switched that up. Mostly because when I broke my hand from a fight I was relating myself to guts thinking "damn at least the guy only lost his left hand"
I think it's kinda funny whenever I go into the comments section and the only mature people are the ones with the dumbest pfps. The deepest stuff always comes from either a sanic, ugandan knuckles, random emoji, or just a random stock photo pfp person.
Actually, it said that it bought him plenty of time. That’s not saying he needed it. The berserker armor is made to hold the body together when in severe condition. Meanwhile, you already see Guts leap through fire earlier in the fight. A couple seconds of being on fire does not change anything about the outcome.
@@gigaguy200 but it could technically make the fight longer as fire is pretty distracting and Guts could´ve missed the final blow. Because Fire that is basically in youzr eye prevents you from seeing stuff. Trust me, I would know.
This might be my favorite death battle ever. Watching this really brings back nostalgia for me, back when I first discovered death battles and started watching them all the time. Not to mention this is the whole reason I started reading berserk.
Awesome as Guts is, I’ve always wondered how exactly he manages to carry around a sword twice his weight (230 pounds with the sword at over 400), let alone swing it with such strength in the first place?
It's heavily implied that the eclipse changed him, multiple characters bring up his unusual aura and his strength seen as impossible even in his own setting. Keep in mind he isn't just swinging that thing around, he's extremely skilled and can swing it so fast that others literally can't perceive his movements. He even lifted the thing with his teeth. I even suspect he wouldn't have been able to use the Dragonslayer before the eclipse, my theory is that while Guts is still human, his willpower makes reality bend slightly around him, tweaking things like physics and probability slightly in his favour.

It changed or possibly corrupted his spiritual essence and is probably why he can survive blatantly impossible injuries and perform superhuman feats.
RIP Kentaro Miura The mangaka who worked on this masterpiece for 30 years. It's a tragedy, but to take a brief moment to step back, Berserk was always about understanding life is unfair and growing through the pains to thrive in spite of the injustice.

Funnily enough though “He’s just built different” works for Guts. Because of the brand on him, he’s constantly partially in the spirit world where thoughts can affect reality. In the case of Guts, simply thinking he’s strong can give him a combat boost.
The man had the worst day of his life when he was thrust into this world. And that bad day.....just kinda kept going. And escalating. Death bumps shoulders with Guts in the hallway, he promptly hands Guts his wallet in a panic and vows he'll be more careful.

Patrik guts stood under a waterfall full of logs on purpose. It was a dumb idea and he survived because of luck. then he demanded a rematch and destroyed all the logs!
Guts is one of those characters that I can’t help but feel awful for despite not existing. And I don’t even know the guy. His strength is earned, but he didn’t deserve to earn it the way he had to struggle for.
I'd argue that this was one of your more evenly matched fights; you have any idea how many times you guys have said that someone didn't have anything that could actually hurt/kill their opponent? Here we've got what amount to two unstoppable forces headbutting each other until one finally broke.
Before I read berserk, my reaction to this fight was "That's horseshit, his opponent outclasses him in every way but black swordsman guy wins because "That's just what he does"? that's a stupid result" after reading berserk it is a valid outcome and nightmare was immensely unfortunate to have ever set foot within the same hemisphere as Guts.
This video introduce me into Berserk and the creator, Kentaro Miura. Later, I learned others like Hidetaka Miyazaki were heavily influence by his work. Without Kentaro Miura, we wouldn't have Dark Souls, etc. He was 54 and this is heartbreaking. Kentaro Miura is a man of legend and he'll be missed.
This death battle is what helped me discover Berserk, and man I couldn’t thank the guys who made it enough. Berserk means so much to me now it’s crazy.

Thank you death battle for helping to convince me when I was younger to read the manga berserk. I had already Watch the 1997 anime but this video is just the tiniest little bit more that convinced me to find a way to read berserk. It was one of the greatest decisions I will ever make in my life, thank you death battle and thank you can Kentaro Miura. Hope to see you in the next life!
Trust me when I say its probably the reverse, arguably the safest place in the universe would be next to guts but it's probably not THAT safe because I doubt he considers you worth saving. BUT... should you be important enough for guts to keep alive, you are most safe next to Guts. (you as in anyone)
At the start of this they said the true measure of someone’s badassery is sword size. Well Nightmare’s blade is 6’1”, and gut’s is 6’6”. So it was clear from the start

Totally. Through pure stats, Gut’s should have been instantly killed by Souledge. Hell, through just stats, any of the demons Guts faces on a daily basis should kill him. But Guts just keeps on going.

Focusing on the nature of the characters and not their stats creates inaccurate results. Otherwise I guess Master Chief can beat Guts because his narrative is that his luck allows him to overcome the odds not matter how unfairly stacked against him they are.

It's funny because Guts really didn't even need his berserker armor in this fight, Screw Attack just needed to show it at least once.

Actually, it said that it bought him plenty of time. That’s not saying he needed it. The berserker armor is made to hold the body together when in severe condition. Meanwhile, you already see Guts leap through fire earlier in the fight. A couple seconds of being on fire does not change anything about the outcome.

This might be my favorite death battle ever. Watching this really brings back nostalgia for me, back when I first discovered death battles and started watching them all the time. Not to mention this is the whole reason I started reading berserk.
Awesome as Guts is, I’ve always wondered how exactly he manages to carry around a sword twice his weight (230 pounds with the sword at over 400), let alone swing it with such strength in the first place?

It's heavily implied that the eclipse changed him, multiple characters bring up his unusual aura and his strength seen as impossible even in his own setting. Keep in mind he isn't just swinging that thing around, he's extremely skilled and can swing it so fast that others literally can't perceive his movements. He even lifted the thing with his teeth.
I even suspect he wouldn't have been able to use the Dragonslayer before the eclipse, my theory is that while Guts is still human, his willpower makes reality bend slightly around him, tweaking things like physics and probability slightly in his favour.

It changed or possibly corrupted his spiritual essence and is probably why he can survive blatantly impossible injuries and perform superhuman feats.

Funnily enough though “He’s just built different” works for Guts. Because of the brand on him, he’s constantly partially in the spirit world where thoughts can affect reality. In the case of Guts, simply thinking he’s strong can give him a combat boost.

I'd argue that this was one of your more evenly matched fights; you have any idea how many times you guys have said that someone didn't have anything that could actually hurt/kill their opponent? Here we've got what amount to two unstoppable forces headbutting each other until one finally broke.
Before I read berserk, my reaction to this fight was "That's horseshit, his opponent outclasses him in every way but black swordsman guy wins because "That's just what he does"? that's a stupid result" after reading berserk it is a valid outcome and nightmare was immensely unfortunate to have ever set foot within the same hemisphere as Guts.

This video introduce me into Berserk and the creator, Kentaro Miura. Later, I learned others like Hidetaka Miyazaki were heavily influence by his work. Without Kentaro Miura, we wouldn't have Dark Souls, etc. He was 54 and this is heartbreaking. Kentaro Miura is a man of legend and he'll be missed.

I had already Watch the 1997 anime but this video is just the tiniest little bit more that convinced me to find a way to read berserk.
