- My review of the HMT Pilot. A watch from a little known brand based in India who mainly manufacture vintage styled mechanical watches. Up until recently they were near impossible to get outside of India but due to some Ebay sellers and watch enthusiasts on various watch forums, they are more accessible to western collectors. The best thing about these watches is they might not be the most modern or have the best finish, but each and every part is Made in India.
Except if you have one of the ones made between 1961-1975. With those earlier watches, Citizen would make and supply the more complex parts (such as the escapement mechanism) and HMT would assemble them to make finished watches. In fact, I believe the balance wheel for the escapement was the very last part to stop being made by Citizen for HMT watches.
@@jakekaywell5972 Nope. Except for the earliest models HMT by 1980 had started making all the parts in-house including the balance spring. All watches made post 1980 would have 100% Indian parts. Yes on Citizen machines and with Citizen supplied raw materials maybe.

@@jakekaywell5972 not really. In the museum it says that the watches have been Indian since 1960s.

I'm from India and I ordered this watch today as HMT is finally shutting down completely. Quite sad, really - my father, grandfathers, uncles - everyone has a story or two associated with an HMT watch. In fact, from what I've been told it was almost a rite of passage, back in the 60's/70's, to get out of high school or college and be gifted a HMT watch by your father.
Me too same story.....some worthless idiot stole from me my HMT hope his/her life is a curse for him / her and his / her family and relatives...
This watch is awesome it will last longer than your lifespan
I have 2 HMT watches and purchased a third one today. One watch has been with me since 1994 and other since 2004. Both working and never opened never repaired. One interesting fact is in their heydays HMT made even their own hair springs. Very few companies do that since it needs special alloys. I am not sure if they still do that. The manufacturing had stopped in 2016 but I hear they have started production again since last year in small numbers (50000 per annum as per their CEO).
This is a piece of art! Telling you this watch will be priceless antique in the future.

I have two. I first purchased a white dial, red second hand pilot..one of my favorite watches. Not too long after than I found another really nice conditioned brown dial pilot. Both vintage, both a lot of fun. They actually do wear pretty nice in size. Keep great time!💘 Big fan of the brand, lots of variety!👍
My watch too. Black face, ultra cool and anyone who thinks it's not worth reviewing doesn't really know what they are talking about.
Thanks mate. A watch doesn't have to cost a fortune to be worth owning. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but I'm happy with mine regardless of how much it cost me.
All the way upto the mid 90s the only watch you saw people wear in India was HMT , everyone from the bank manager to the bus driver had one. Great review my friend.
I am from India & I have a good collection I have 7 watches & really love them. I have my TISSOT, SEIKO & CITIZEN but I love my HMT. There is a nostalgic feeling when you hold them in your hand.
I just found this brand accidentally when I bought a really cool vintage looking watch on eBay the other night. I TH-camd it after the fact, found out more about the company, and immediately bought a second!
I am wearing the exact same watch which I bought about 800 INR or about $12 two years ago from the factory outlet. I also bought Janta,Kohinoor,Sona etc but I use Pilot as daily wearer from last 2 years. I love it.

I want it but am not getting anywhere except the used ones from ebay.
I bought from Showroom in Delhi but it is closed.

Bought a refurbished HMT military on Ebay. The dial probably was repainted and the lume is very strong on it. It was worth the price. Just a little bit more expensive than the cheapest chinese quartz watches but it is so much better.

My grandfather owned a lot of watches and the one he used in army was hmt pilot and on casual days it was chinar or janta I got those watches and they still work I still have seikos ,fevreleuba and automatic hmt rajat I enjoy chinar the most as it has a nice patina to it looks super good and works with +1 delay. Also you gotta try titan automatic and mechanical watches also made in India 🇮🇳 love and peace ✌️ great content.

I LOVE HMT WATCHES
THAT WATCHES WAS VERY STRONG AND DOES GET NOT RUST IT WAS BULT VERY HIGH QUALITY STAIN LESS STEEL
0231 movement. I have a Pilot and a Gold plated Sona with the same 0231 movement. Very slim. They are the same size as my handwinding Omega 266 movement gold watch from 1954.
Watches were smaller back then.

Spot on review- you hv a original and a great time piece .. I hv a few HMT's myself ..great quality.. but sadly India shut shop 😕on them !! Beware of EBAy though there are some fakes & frankenstines too there which they call hmt but are not - super fakes
I was lucky enough to get my hands on the pilot a couple years ago. I'm planning to purchase a janata now and I don't know where to look for. Can you recommend me a place where they sell original HMTs at reasonable prices? I live in Mumbai btw.
Thanks for this review. I have the same watch and I wear it almost everyday. Regarding the price, in India it costs only around Rs.700 which is roughly $10 brand new :)

Thanks for the review. Unfortunately, they are no longer with us. I think, along with vintage Seiko 5's, they are the best deal in sub-$50.00 mechanicals.

Stick with that elegant watch. Indian government has decided to shut down hmt watches and that watch is going to be expensive in the near future. hmt watches are known to last for an average life time of 30 to 40 years and some well maintained watches have even lasted for 50 to 55 years.
very sad thing why government improve the management for this company it's the company last more then a decade please Indian Government rechange the management and invest
Selva kumar Kuppusamy They may keep one factory operational since the recent influx of purchases after word got out they may be shut down. Hopefully this ends up happening. HMT was just beginning to branch out into the international collector market. I'd hate to see them go.
+WISdomWatchReport No sir, I am a HMT fan and stay in the Bangalore where it is only working factory now. The whole company will be shut down in April 2016. The factory is in shambles right now and Indian govt is not interested in giving it a new life. VERY VERY SAD. i am making rounds to their authorized stores every weekend and not able to buy even a single watch (only quartz are available). They are no more making mechanical auto or winding watches. Only company in the world right now at this price range which has every thing inhouse manufactured. It hurts me a lot that previous govts never ever cared to review this iconic watch maker HMT. Please hold on to every HMT watch you have. They are Gold at dirt cheap price. Life time watches which need very minimal servicing.
SITCO watches one among the oldest Indian watch making companies was closed down a few years back aswell. It used to supply movements to citizen and some other Japanese watch makers!! What a shame !!!
I have ten HMTs and I'm looking for a Rajat Supreme with a black dial.
The Rajat is a 21 jewel automatic with day/date complication in a cushion case, so it's very upmarket for HMT.
I'm actually wearing a gold (plated) HMT Sona, which is their dress watch complete with a guilloche dial.
It's nice and slim as a dress watch should be and I wear it more than my Vacheron Constantin Patrimony and Ulysse Nardin.
I got one too but with a white dial. Super cool.
I think I'm gonna get a HMT too.

Can you tell me if the watch stops ticking when it you run while wearing it as it gives sudden jerks/shocks to the watch? Mine HMT stops if it experiences jerks/shocks while a run also.

Yo acabo de comprar 2 pilot, ambos iguales con números arábigos. Son restaurados, pero entiendo que existen muchas piezas usadas y nuevas de la marca HMT para repararlos. Osea, que aunque sean reparados, en cierta forma son "originales". Los compré haciéndole una oferta directa a tal vendedor de acuerdo al precio que los estaba vendiendo. Él aceptó y creo que hice una buena compra. Tengo un SONA (reparado) y un Janata retro totalmente nuevo. Claro, éste último es más caro. Lo que no me gusta es, que la tienda de relojes en línea de HMT no hace ventas ni envíos fuera de la India. Creo que lo hacen porque quieren mantener esos relojes en la custodia de clientes de ese país para preservar ese legado histórico cultural. La verdad los precios que ahí ofrecen son muy accesibles. Incluso para los relojes que se consideran de lujo de esa misma marca tienen precios muy buenos. Puedes conseguir relojes nuevos en Ebay, pero son más caros a cómo los venden en esa tienda en línea. Quiero un "Kohinoor Saffron". Sin embargo, en Ebay lo venden muy caro. Lo quiero nuevo y espero poder conseguirlo a un precio más razonable.
What is the size of the your wrist? I don't want to buy at first because the case is around 36mm but it actually looks good on your wrist. By the way, the new HMT watches have see-thru back these days.

Hi, I know this is an old video, can someone shed me some light on where to get the all original non refurbished of this watch? I've seen a lot on ebay and it seems to me most of them are refurbished or the dial has been repainted. Thanks.

My watch repair guy says that movement is not worth fixing...
It isn't. While it's definitely possible to do so, given the old school nature of the HMT 0231, entire replacement movements can be had for $10.

you should consider wearing gloves when doing close ups on the watch. the little imperfections on your hands are rather distracting
Really I fell bad that hmt watch was manufactured by grace impex which is not a original I paid 150dollaars for it.Who ever send me a fack watch he should be shameful. We trust Indians and they are giving us fack products. I dont no who is grace impex but every one knows Indias famous product HMT
