- The Hungarian Grand Prix Comedy Review will be a little late this week, as I'll actually be at Hungary for the race! In the meantime I thought i'd take a look at Lance Stroll. The Canadian has no doubt been struggling this season against new teammate Fernando Alonso. Here we break down his career, and try to work out what's going wrong...

There's a better chance of Max losing his seat than of Stroll losing his 😂
😂😂
😂😂
Haha
he will retire in 2028
LOL
The worse stroll does, the better. (Less constructor's points for AM=More wind tunnel time)
Well at the end of the day Lawrence is a businessman and isn’t going to want to lose money year after year because of low finishes, you can tell he wants to win
@@alexcarr2584 Well the money that is lost can be made up for by the fact that stroll doesnt need wages
@@lordjuvenile9068 plus he bought the team and a car make for his son so...
literally 4d chess
Ello juvenile
As long as his father owns the team, he won't be going anytime soon. It’s not suprising that a father would do anything for their son
You're not wrong but his father is still a businessman, the sponsors would think really deep to support AM if the goal set is not achieved, unless everything comes from papa strolls pocket.
If I were sponsoring a team for millions I would probably say hey.. I’d rather be one of the million pixelsized sponsor at a team who wants to win (McLaren) than a team that compensates the mediocrity of a driver who is probably costing more money than he’s producing.
AT some point the loses from letting his son race wont please the investors or team and will be forced out
Nepotism isn't embraced by everyone. Trying to turn it into sentimental good parenting or something is nonsense.
@@itsPovich on the other hand, stroll gets a lot of camera time due to his blocking and other actions on the grid!
Ironically, what we're witnessing is Lawrence Stroll's money start to work to Lance's disadvantage. It's one thing when dad is funding your racing career (and I don't fault Lance or anyone for doing that, I would do the same if I had the opportunity), it's another thing entirely when dad buys the whole team and decides that he wants to turn it into a top-tier team. We're now at the point where Lawrence is clearly invested for a lot more than just Lance's racing career, and the team is already suffering by not having a better driver in his seat. Lawrence is a shrewd businessman, and given how much he wants to win, I doubt he'll hesitate too long before replacing Lance. Maybe it won't be next year, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if does happen.
This absolutely. Lawrence ironically put his son in the crosshairs when he set his sights on making a championship-contending team... While supporting his son, who is very clearly _not_ championship material
It’s his son. He makes plenty from other businesses. It’s the same reason billionaires spend money in any sport. Vanity, few make money out of it. He’ll take the hit, hope they build a championship winning car soon. With my tin foil hat on, Alonso will probably be retired by then, they employ a number two, who accepts number two. Etc. I just always wondered once lance is too old for f1, what happens? I used to think the same with red bull but they make money being in f1
And monkeys might fly out of my arse!
Opportunities comes and goes. In Formula 1 you compete against the best of the best of the best. (MIB pun here)
Lance isn't a hindrance to the team at this point because they don't have the car or the ability to develop it well enough over a season to fight for championships. Until Aston Martin have the ability to fight for a championship, Lance's performance doesn't matter. Lawrence will continue to upgrade facilities, improve the team and prepare Aston for a championship battle, which is still many years away. This is still Force India, their facilities can't stand up to the likes of half the grid. There's many years ahead before they'd be able to legitimately battle for race wins on merit.
If not by team orders, he was twice beaten by Hulkenberg in 2020 and 2022
That is not true. Hulk was faster and ahead of Stroll in Silverstone race 2 (the first one his car had a failure before the start) but then a suspected puncture happened and he had to box. I say 'suspected' because still to this day i believe it was fake.
Then in Bahrein 2022 Lance was outqualified but in race was faster than Nico. And in Jeddah Stroll beat Hulk in quali and was on his way to 11th but his collision with Albon just dropped him to last place.
@@j.k4984yes but the collision with Albon was strolls fault
@@Apex54544it wasn't really completely his fault
When I spread misinformation on the internet
@@Apex54544 Nop. Alex just crashed into him. Just watch how massively locks up his tyres, no way he would've make that corner.
Lance has a somewhat earned reputation for driving with little attention to his mirrors but in this case he's clean.
The major problem with him is consistency. Every now and then he has a good race but they are few and far between. I think he should have done an extra year or two in the developmental formulae to get him in the zone. I don't think he'd be a world beater unlike what Alonso says (who usually says that as a form of mind-games) but it would've helped reign it in a little more and be better consistently than he currently is.
I feel like Lance just lacks courage to "throw elbows" as the commentators are always saying. Nearly every time push comes to shove, he fails to fight for his spot on the track. His best race finishes this year saw Alonso behind him blocking for him to stop people from taking places from him.
Larry spent tens of millions of dollars renting year-old Williams and GP tracks so Lance could practice being consistent. The only thing he's consistent at is denying real talented drivers a chance in F1. Absolutely the worst pay driver in history.
Lance Stroll occasionally shows glimpses of what might be: every now and then he'll manage to drive a decent race, but then in free practices for the next race he seems to be overconfident and crashes again and again.
Insiders speak of drivers who can think ahead of the car and those are the real talents. Stroll however seems to struggle to even keep up with the car and usually falls behind it, resulting in either another crash, or a hopeless race where he just putters around somewhere at the end of the midfield. In some races it looks like he knows what to do and how to do it, but his brain just can't process the information fast enough and therefore he can't keep up with the car. And then all of a sudden there's a race where he shows that glimpse of what could be again and maybe not coincidentally those are mostly wet races, where the pace is slower and Stroll actually can keep up with the car.
Personally I think Lance Stroll should drive in another series than F1, where he will probably perform much better and more consistent.
If he had more performances like the first half of the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, there wouldn't be videos like this.
@@billware6793 Don't forget Mazaspin and Maldennaro.
the way McLaren have stepped up (and they are known to maintain their position after upgrades), AMR might even finish P5 in the constructor's..
If Lawrence is really ambitious for his team to succeed.. there is a massive opportunity to bring Leclerc or Sainz into the team since it looks like Kimi Raikonnen will remain Ferrari's last world champion for the next 50 years..
Course going to be hard to get a Leclerc or Sainz if he can't get the car back to how it was the first few races of the season. I'm not sure either one wants to spend time doing development work and hoping it works out.
To be honest, I have a feeling that Yuki Tsunoda might be moving to AMR sometime in the future. First I was thinking he could move to AMR in 2026, when they start using Honda power units and I'm sure Honda would appreciate (read: want) a Japanese driver in one of the seats. Also 2026 could be a good year for Alonso to finally retire from his legendary carreer. But now I start to think that if Stroll doesn't start performing any better quickly, they might want to change him out for Yuki before 2026.
Also, I know a lot of people think Tsunoda will move to RBR in the future, but somehow I just don't see that happening for him.
they went from fighting for p2 to fighting for their life to hold on to p4. then there will be the occasional alonso top 5 finish, while mclaren will mostly likely get a top 5 finish every race until the end of the season, because almost all the circuits that are left suit their car perfectly
Daddy Stroll has said he wants to be fighting for world championships within a few years, he even convinced Honda to come back so unless a miracle happens I can't see Stroll staying, I have a feeling Honda would want a Japanese driver to represent them in 2026 with Yuki looking better and Iwasa in F2 it seems like it's a matter of when
Unless Alonso retires and Yuki takes his spot?
No one is going to take his spot unless he wants to go. If I owned the team my son could drive there as long as he wanted.
@@Appletank8Alonso is only in his third year in F1. Why would a young guy like him retire? He could be a future world champion.
Ah yes Honda. Come back for a few years, get the data they need, and bail on the sport again. Then we will have McLaren Powertrains as they too take the design and make it in-house to keep it going.
Cannot see this happening
i always wonder what would’ve happened if stroll had actually done f2 and have those extra years of experience. its so clear he entered the sport way too early
Well, as of now he has 6 years of F1 (going into 7).
Even though he entered into f1 prematurely, half a decade in F1 should be enough to improve significantly (which he hasn't)
It is laughable especially, if you consider how experienced his teammates were (Massa, Vettel, Perez, Alonso).
Point is, he is a fraud, no matter the angle you look at it, and unfortunately his seat is basically guaranteed unless the unfortunate happens.
Or, sometimes the talent just isn’t there. There is a very specific skill set required to drive an F1 car, and it’s not the same as other Formulas. Some guys adapt very well and some don’t. Lance could be given a Red Bull and he wouldn’t be near Max, in the same way that Checo isn’t anywhere near Max.
Wait he skipped f2? Is that rare? Assumed all drivers on the grid did f2 at one point
@Blballerboy yes in general. Most drivers have f2/gp2 experience.
@@Blballerboy lando norris is basically the poster child of what to expect to become an f1 driver. Lance stroll basically skipped all that because of his father's money.
I’ve always wondered ever since Alonso signed for Aston if one of the clauses in his contract stated he would have a type of mentor role to Lance because he’s been very generous and supportive to Stroll Jr this season.
I can imagine it either way. Maybe it's just a big "being able to read the room" and knowing what he needs to do to stay on a team with a good car. From the outside it seems like Alonso has had large variety of team dynamics over the years. I can imagine a young Alonso rocking the boat and making trouble for himself.
I’d assume this is more Alonso understanding this is the best team he can be at who have a reasonable chance to be a title contender in a few years.
It’s also a lot easier for him to take that role on when he’s whipping Lance every week. If Alonso was being beaten we may see a different dynamic but there’s little to no chance of that happening
Issue with Stroll is that
1. I see basically every driver on the grid and some off it doing better given the amount of time and the cars Stroll has had
2. You can’t reasonably argue that Stroll would’ve stayed in F1 this long on merit.
Better drivers have had to sit out because of him and he’s managed to hold on to his seat ahead of teammates who comprehensively outperformed him. That’s not even mentioning some of the absolutely boneheaded incidents that he’s been responsible for and all his podiums (Baku where Massa was ahead and had a suspension failure, Monza where he should’ve won had he not gone off, and Sakhir where he should’ve won even getting passed by Checo who did win after being last going into lap 2) either having significant asterisks or still somehow being lackluster results
Glad someone else sees this.
Many people point out Stroll's podium finishes but non were achieved on merit. Yeah I know to finish first, first you have to finish and all that, but in these races he had a massive helping of fortune and was outperformed by his team mate.
The guy has talent but his results would have seen him out of F1 long ago if it wasn't for blatant nepotism
Baby stroll is definitely talented. No question about it. He has tremendous feeling for grip and that is a natural gift, the gifted are always good in the wet and boy, is he good in the wet. That being said, when you see him walk around he kinda looks like a lost kid who just doesn't want to disappoint his dad, but does he really really like F1? I have my doubts about it. He definitely doesn't put everything in it because he isn't the fittest guy of the bunch and I don't think he has the brain capacity for a complex sport like F1. He can't do what most of the others do with brakebias and sorts on his wheel. Which probably is one of the reasons why he is good in the heavy rain because you basically have it on one setting and all the rest is pure feel. This truly is the odd case of Lance Stroll
@@bertdemeulemeesterI honestly feel he isn't as driven as the rest of the grid because he never had to fear for his seat at all. All the other drivers had to outperform others for a chance at a seat and be constantly/consistently performing to stay there. Out of everyone on the grid rn, Lance alone will never be in that situation because of his father. So I think he isn't as hungry and not as focused as the rest of the grid which affects his driving for better or worse.
@@bertdemeulemeesterThe last time he actually did well in the wet was pole 4 years ago
"2. You can’t reasonably argue that Stroll would’ve stayed in F1 this long on merit. "
100% agree.
Hats off! I'm not brave enough to board a Ryanair plane 😆
Why not? They havent had a single accident that resulted in a single loss of life, in the almost 40 years they've been around. Not many other carriers can say that.
@@junkiexl86 it's called a joke, primarily based on Ryanair's reputation as one of low quality service and hence, a fear of disaster.
Stroll, similarly, has a poor reputation as a driver, and frequently causes accidents, which is the reason for the parallels being drawn.
What mainly annoys me about the situation is his dads quote after Spain “I think he demonstrated in Barcelona he’s now starting [to feel better]. It took six or seven races to feel better [from his injury]… I believe they [Stroll and Alonso] will be equal by the end of the season.”
This is either delusional, stupid or agenda based. It was clear in Spain Alonso had a difficult race and it’s put a lot of pressure on Lance and IMO is an impossible task for him
I think Stroll is a decent driver, he's certainly not the worst driver to pay his way into an F1 seat, and as a person, he does seem to apply himself with the same level of dedication and commitment as any other driver and he doesn't really rock the F1 paddock boat, again, unlike some drivers I can think of. I think he's an decent midfield driver.
I think the problem is Daddy Stroll. The only time Lance ever seems to get 'fighty' in the paddock is when the suggestions he's only here because of his dad's money comes up, I get the impression he wants to be racing on merit, and so suggestions that it's all because of his dad's money really annoys him, which I can understand.
As a racing driver, his biggest problem is he can be really inconsistent; one race he'll be pushing the top points positions, the next he's way off the points with no pace. I think if he could find a consistent points-paying consistency, the questions would go away, or at least go quiet.
He just proved today he is the worst driver of all time…
The weird thing about Stroll is that he does have World Champion potential, just not in F1. I could easily see him being an amazing driver in WEC
More like be an amazing driver in W Series.
@@auntjanet2346 W Series is harder to win than both WEC and even F1, considering it's shut down and there is no more racing to be done.
WEC, especially with its different classes, requires a level of spacial awareness and ability to check mirrors that Stroll was born without.
nah Lance should move to the Renault Clio cup series, maybe then he can become World Champion material there lol
'Sid from Ice Age' 🤣🤣🤣 proper Max fan but these Ice Age jokes are killing me! 😂😂
I think he's good enough to be in F1, but not good enough for the AM team he's on. AM is in the top half of teams, I think stroll is a back marker driver.
Agree, I cannot say he is the worst on the grid. But 100% he is slower than few years before.
Without Lance, Force India would have been bought by Dmitri Mazepin, and there would be no AM team
But who is worse than him. Sargeant? Can't really make a reasonable case for anyone else.
@@juhosten3463Stroll is ninth in driver standings. He should be doing much, much better given the car they've had, but he's an average driver realistically.
@@juhosten3463 No one is worse than Stroll in 2023
Well mate you've got your answer 😙
I feel like Lance could have been a great driver. But his dad wanted a Max Verstappen when clearly, Stroll needed time to develop his skills. Part of me feels like Lawrence should have waited for Lance to develop in F2 before he was shipped off to F1.
Big time, he chose the very wrong year to make Lance take the F3 to F1 jump, 2017 where F1’s new cars were significantly bigger. Makes sense why Lance was the last guy to make that jump
I’m not even going to be surprised if AM drops down the constructors’ championship and blames and fire Fernando and keep Stroll 😂
No doubt about it
it would not be that long before alonso turn his brown nosing persona into his actual persona and trashing the team 🤣🤣
What a great, measured analysis, Will. Stroll has been just good enough to not get fired, and I personally don’t see daddy firing him. It will be awkward if Aston Martin get back to it and maybe Alonso gets a win while Stroll keeps finishing at the edge of the points, or just out of them.
Bottom line: if Lance is gone, Lawrence and his money are gone too.
To a point I wonder if Lawrence might simply have less presence over time, or if he'll have to be pressured by the other higher-ups at AM to let Lance go
@@hello_alpine1693 Those "higher-ups" better have big balls to tell that to Lawrence's face
@@leopoldbluesky I only say that cause there are people who are his superiors at AM corporate, so if they REALLY deem it necessary, the pressure could be put on him. But that's only if Lance stops pulling occasional P4s out of his ass
MEASURED! Are you f’ing kidding - this crap only proliferates because of Lawrence Stroll’s financing. What would your father do?
@@leopoldbluesky When money is on the line and involved, esp in a business setting, everyone has balls. Money talks.
i just realized stroll teammates were all very good and legendary drivers. first he got valtteri bottas, arguably one of the best second driver who helped lewis win his 6 titles. then he got perez whose defense is one of the best if not the best. then vettel who is a 4 time world champion and now alonso, 2 time world champion and almost a champion in a 3rd fastest car in 2012. stroll is really fighting hard in f1 despite having daddy's money to back him up.
Bottas helped Lewis win his six titles ?? What are you on ?? And what planet?
Massa was stroll teammate, not bottas
Massa was his teammate, not Bottas. But still, Massa is a goated driver with miles of experience. No matter if he’s the same or not after 2009, you can’t expect any rookie (especially straight from F3) to beat a driver like Massa from the get go
If Daddy Stroll wanted to do anything to promote Canadians in motor racing, he would have to invest in Canadian go-carting... which I don't even know is a thing.
It's life. Lance Stroll is one of a relatively small number of people who can drive an F1 car with a reasonable level of success. I wish him well. If he was my son I would be proud of him, and as his father, and a very rich man, I would be enjoying every minute of that adventure with my son, however it worked out and I wouldn't really be bothered what some people said. Lance is up against the best drivers in the world and he's doing OK. And you?
Well said. He’s still got his good days when he has fast consistent pace. He can be a bonehead once in a while, but he’s also been very unlucky. For years he was really the king of being called for pit stops right before a safety car gets brought out. Shame that people only look at paper results and blaming him for everything, even for things he had zero control over
Everything you said was spot-on correct. The only thing is...Lawrence Stroll is living his own F1 dream vicariously through Lance and without Lance, there's no reason for him to continue owning a Formula 1 team or keep spreading all that Tommy Hilfiger money around to people like Lewis Hamilton to sweeten things with Mercedes for his engine contract. No Lance, No Larry I'm afraid. Stroll's a clothing magnate like Luciano Benetton not someone with a racing past, aside from being a wealthy spectator with a paddock pass.
I would say Stroll is in exactly the position that I would expect him to be in. Easily being beaten by one of the all time greats, but still picking up a few points along the way. So, not as good as Gasly or Ocon, but on a similar level to Zhou or Magnussen but a bit better than Sergeant. Not the worse on the grid, but in the bottom six or seven. Money talks in the sport and always has done so.
miles worse than magnussen. on level with zhou and better than sargeant. for me he is 18th-19th on the grid in terms of ability
"better than Sergeant". Gj Lance! 6-7 years of experience just for us to congratulate him for being better than a rookie in a Williams
So shocked by his own performance jump, he fell off his bike 🙃🤣🤣🤣
He's not bad at all, just a bit inconsistent, but most of his struggles come in qualifying.
In the races he's always been good, and don't forget who his last two team mates have been.
no he is pretty bad. having occasional strong weekends isnt enough for a team with aston martin’s ambitions. he barely deserves a seat in f1. hes only better than sargeant and thats all. remember sargeant is a rookie and lance has been in f1 for 7 years
You have a pretty loose definition of 'good' if you think Lance is good. What is Lewis and Max to you then? Low-tier gods?
@shawnelliott7793 Well yeah they're two of the best to ever do it. And I said he's good in the races, but he can't qualify.
Not everything has to be black and white, people are allowed to have opinions
@@woody2goody183 Didnt he just finish 81 secs off the pace in Qatar? Did he even finish the Japanese GP? Or Singapore quali? Wasn't he 87 secs off the pace in Monza? It very much is black and white my man, it very much is.
All BS aside the man only has like 47 points in arguably the 3rd best car on the grid atm, which for a good chunk of the season was the 2nd best.
@@junkiexl86 ok all-knowing one
i honestly believe that aston martin (daddy stroll) purposely slowed down Alonso a little bit, so Stroll doesnt look as bad as he really is. as you said, lower constructors points mean more windtunnel time.
I heavily doubt that's true. Lawrence was the happiest out of the whole team when Alonso was on the podium. When you own a team your priorities have to change.
Yeah, more wind tunnel time. Also less prize money (Doesn't matter if he is a billionaire, still would like to spend less money), sponsors being willing to pay more, more highly motivated staff, and most importantly to be seen as a better prospect for top drivers (And team members) seeing as how they will need a new decent driver in most likely 3 years at most. Getting a top tier driver to think of you as an option two years from now, when negotiations will be going on, is much easier if you have lets say a 3rd instead of 4th/5th.
And even disregarding all of that, in 5 of the 12 races the only drivers to beat Alonso were Red Bulls and its been at least 3 races that they haven't been the 2nd best team so that doesn't make any sense.
Tinfoil hat levels of conspiracy. A shark like Lawrence Stroll doesn’t tank for future potential gains. He wants results asap.
Its more complex than that. Sure any father would want to see thier child succeed and do everything to make that happen, but theres far more at stake then just pride and ego. Far too many other players at play here, with far more power. Sponsors and shareholders pull most of the strings and you have to keep them happy. Purposefully gimping the entire team to make your kid look a little better isnt really sound logic with so much at stake.
The most Daddy Stroll can do is strong-arm them into keeping Lance's seat, but even that is at risk if they push hard enough.
I love how this is on my recommended after the Chinese GP, Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
"sid from ice age"
that's an incredible sledge, well played
Answer: Very Very Bad.
Stroll is definitely good enough for F1. I think a lot of the sourness comes from better drivers being stuck at worse teams. Albon comes to mind. But there are certainly worse drivers in F1
sargeant and…?
This age like fine wine
He’s been in the sport 7 YEARS and nearly has 150 race starts. How people can make excuses for him truly baffles me. They talk about him improving and that as if he’s a rookie - not someone with more starts than Leclerc, Lando, and Russell.
Because he has no risk of losing his seat due to performance, he drives as if he has nothing to lose. Which when you’re Lance Stroll, is not a good thing 😂.
Honestly think he has potential, remember he had 2 broken wrists start of the season, you can’t heal properly while driving a F1 car man.
stroll at williams: went from f3 to f1 so understandably very wobbly but in all honesty, did good enough, at RP, showed promise and definitely deserved to be in F1 in my opinion. at aston martin, vs Vettel, sure enough hes there, vs Alonso, doesnt deserve his seat
His issue is consistency.
Make no mistake, he does have talent and, on a given day, can be very quick.
Unfortunately, that's not enough.
You need to maintain a basic level at every race and maximise what you have.
If he has the ability to fix that, he absolutely deserves to be on the grid.
he isnt that bad actually. everybody judges him because of hes dad, but i really mean that he deserves a seat in f1. also a driver that create some action
He' s not as bad as Mazepin or Ide, but he's far from good and I think its safe to say if Daddy Rich wasnt protecting his seat, he would have been out of F1 years ago. He creates action alright, and not in a good way.
How bad is Lance Stroll?
Very.
Very very bad.
His dad owns the team so no one can force him out
Lawrence Stroll represents a conglomerate of Shareholders which owns Aston Martin so the question is how long can Lance Stroll hold out until they want him to leave the team to protect their investment
Josh Revell is not going to be happy about the 5 second Mahaveer slander.... Lovely video bud! Safe travels back from the race :)
I remember when he crashed in to Vettel on the cool down lap after the race.
Can't remember which track though, Shanghai maybe?
I rank him higher than most people, since I ignore who he is and rank him on performance alone.
He's not a bad driver, he's not a dangerous reckless driver like others, he plays the game well without complaining being second fiddle to Alonso in his daddy's team, so I think he's a cool chap and good driver, better than at least half the field.
I think Stroll surely deserved a chance in F1 and I think he deserves a place in F1, but not in a top team. I think he is good enough for the midfield. I would prefer him compared to Magnussen, Tsunoda and Sargeant.
I'd put Tsunoda above Stroll. Tsunoda does have superior pace but he's erratic and so is Stroll.
magnussen?? did u compare stroll and magnussen??? stroll cant do a quarter of what magnussen is capable of, so please. tsunoda is also miles faster, but too many dnfs and mistakes sometimes, he is very impatient.
Wow, that was a very reasonable and relatable essay. Stroll seemed decent for most part when paired with Seb. But whenever the car came alive and was actually able to get a decent result, or even a podium, it was Seb who seemed like another person, and showed Lance Stroll why he's the fourtime Worldchampion, and he was not. Lance was able to qualify Seb here and there, but not when it mattered, and overall lost both duels, especially 2022 quite clear. Especially in the second half of 22, when Vettel wanted to end on a high, was on average 0,350-400 seconds faster in Qualifying, in the race it was over a second, I have no data here, but just rewatch the races, you'll see. Do the gaps sound familiar? Introduce Fernando Alonso, who pulls these gaps every race on Lance, and the car was alive every race, when you compare it to last year. Which proves my point. Stroll doesn't stand a chance against Fernando, he had none against an ignited Seb, and he will never be a threat to Fernando in this form. I don't see Lance improving, he wasn't delivering, and it is time for another one. Try Drugovich, I wouldn't be surprised when he comes closer to Fernando in his first race than Stroll ever could.
Stroll is decent overall but I think everyone sees he lacks consistency which is required in a (sub)topteam like this year, but much more forgiving in a low team, because the difference between P12 and P18 during a offf-weekend doesn't matter too much, while the difference between P4 and P9 does. He regularly has really good races but has his off days as well. That is why I think with just sponsormoney he would be in F1 as well. I mean... except De Vries all the lesser drivers (Latifi, Schumacher, Zhou, Mazepin, Tsunoda, Sargeant, Sirotkin) had their commericial back-ups: surname, sponsor involved nationality or just daddy's money. With the exception of Tsunoda I would value Stroll highest (in a lower team). Conclusion: good enough for F1, but not for a topteam
stroll is around p11-p13 even if the car is good, or even if its bad. vettel was around p14-p16 when it was bad, but then around p7-p9 when it was good, which is what mattered most. obv vettel hasnt been as good since 2014, he was always cracking under pressure, but that doesnt mean he lost all his pace. it was a hard task for stroll to compete with vettel, let alone alonso, that doesnt even seem to age. either way hes bringing the team down, and its just gonna get worse from now on.
I don’t think stroll is a bad driver I just think he became complacent like he knows as long as his dad owns the team he won’t ever lose his seat it’s like he has no drive no motivation at all he just shows up to the race gets whatever result and then just leave there’s potentially there like turkey 2020 Baku 2017 for example there is some talent there but it’s like something is missing he’s not making that step forward at all he’s too comfortable in the position he is in.
Always thought the same. He seemed far more motivated in Williams than he did since his dad started RP/Aston Martin
As long as his father is at the helm he won't ever lose his seat.
Nepotism to the highest degree !!
Like the saying goes there have always been pay drivers and if you rank stroll with them he is amazing. I don't think he is world championship good but I do think he deserves to be on the grid. Over all he isn't going to be make the very best guys sweat about their championships but he isn't bad and i expect he'll take a couple more podiums in his career. I don't think he is going anywhere.
Lol, I thought you were serious for a moment 😮😂
There are lots of Lance Stroll apologists. However if you look through his F1 career there isn't a season where he has earned a seat on pure merit. Drivers like Massa, Ocon and Perez have been let go ahead of him.
To be fair Massa retired, he wasn't even supposed to drive in 17' but only did because Bottas went to Mercedes. I agree with the Pérez and Ocon assessment though, they are both miles better!
He needed more time in the junior categories.
He’s no world champion, but at times he shows a Lance that’s a solid midfield or possibly a front runners second driver level of performance, but he isn’t consistent enough for those roles.
The Content Cop audio reference is on point.
In FP and Qualifying, Stroll keeps being mentioned for impeding, lacks situational awareness, and creates a hazard where there's no reason for it.
During races Stroll has had a number of incidents that damaged close competitors or knocked them out of the race entirely, while giving wide berth in the same spots on the track to front runners.
In other words, he's a little shit behind the wheel.
here after he rear-ended Danny Ric in China
Ive always seen it as while yes he entered the sport as a Paid driver and yes he had that good race at Baku in 2017(?) i think it was (the podium in the williams) hes a definite improvment to the other Paid drivers that's entered F1 in recent years (latifi, mazispin) and over the last like 2-3 years hes improved his mannerisms and racecraft
The 2015 crash at Monza wasn't the only incident Stroll got himself embroiled in. At Spa, he threw a really ill-advised defensive move going into Les Combes, took himself, teammate Felix Rosenqvist and Mikkel Jensen (now a Peugeot factory driver) out of the race and earned himself a ban from the third race the following day. Also, that same year, he also took the Toyota Racing Series title in New Zealand (competition there included Callum Ilott, Sergio Sette Camara, Artem Markelov, Arjun Maini, Charlie Eastwood, Ferdinand Habsburg, Sam MacLeod, Alfonso Celis Jr, Santino Ferrucci and Nikita Mazepin).

The Stroll haters are going to be silent again until Lance does bad...then they're going to act like the last few races never happened. It's a really strange cult, but I keep trying to help them.
@@ErickMcNerney Nobody is going silent about it, it's a very known fact that Stroll is one of the worst drivers in the current grid. it's only recently that he's seemed to gain a new wind and maybe in 2024 we'll see him improve
@@adida7485 lmao....do you follow F1? You sound like a bot.
It's a "known fact"?
No, it's an objective fact that he's shown multiple times that he has talent. He's just inconsistent. And it's not "only recently" or whatever. It's just that it's always up and down. He has been quick in many races before the end of the season, but just had poor qualifying performances. Even in Qatar where he had his outburst he was quick in the race and finished in the points across the line, but only missed out due to penalties.
@@ErickMcNerney Yeah, I do. If it wasn’t a fact it wouldn’t be agreed upon by the majority
@@adida7485 It's a fact that people trash him, yeah. That's true. Not fair in my opinion, but you can follow the majority, that's fair.
Lance is so frustrating because you know he has these moments where he’s like really good, but they just come once in a blue moon. And you know if he was in any other top team he’d be out the door about 5 times now.
Cmon man he struggles every race. Every now and then there might be an incident or a safety car or a weather event or something that propels him up the standings in a race but the exception proves the rule. 99.99% the time he doesn’t have what’s needed to win races.
He’s an average middle of the pack driver in F1.
In worst to best order:
1. DeVries
2. Sargeant
3. Stroll
Unless my mind is blank and I can’t remember anyone else, he’s the 3 worst driver out there.
''moments where he’s like really good,'' Even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day.
Never was he really good , consistent yes but for a brief amount of circuits , and the backing doesn't let him grow better.
But 9 months later (currently on Apr-24)… the Δ over Alonso is trailing at its hightest levels ever!
As long as Lance races for AM. They'd need a car that makes the RB19 look like an artefact before time, if they want to win a constructors championship or have Lance win anything at all. If they were truly behind their own goal of gunning for championships you can't lambast around with a driver that RB would've dropped mid-season like with Nyck.
All the teams know this, and thus AM will never be a true challenger to anything other than a drivers championship, which Lance will never compete in.
"How bad is Lance Stroll?"
Me: "yes"
lol this video came up on my feed after the 2024 chinese gp
Good timing
I really want lance to success. He always been disrespected since his f1 debut. Yet, he have legitimate pedigree behind that. Winning gp2 and his wet race performamce, i guess he win or atleast podium in that race.
I really hope he can comeback to his best version again.
stroll is basically not crash-prone latifi
Lance Stroll is actually proving to be a decent driver...
I have questions.
1. Are you one of ChatGPTs siblings?
2. What's your definition of "Decent"
3. Do you even watch F1 regularly?
@@joshbrookes6439 I have been following the F1 since 1978. Went to the first F1 race in Montreal in snow flurries.
Decent in my point of view isn't a driver who is in the top 3 but does his best for the team of which I consider Lance Stroll and Oscar Piastri to be.
And my favorite car was the Lotus 79.
His role is to make retiring old drivers look still valid.
Man you really have it out for Mahaveer 🤣
This is JUST MY OWN OPINION and FEELING: At the end of the day Lawrence Stroll is a businessman. So while his son definitely enjoys the benefit of being his son, I am absolutely certain there are limits.
During his time at Racing Point he was mostly outscored by PER but he did manage to beat his teammate (PER or reserve driver HUL) on several occasions (2019 in AUS, CAN, GER, in 2020 in HUN, GBR and 70A, ESP, BEL, ITA and ABU - not too shabby!) [src: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_Point_F1_Team#Complete_Formula_One_results]
While at AMR he has had two multiple WDC champions as his teammtes (VET and ALO), so obviously any direct comparisons between him and them are somewhat unfair. Nevertheless he won races against VET: 2021 - BHR, EMI, ESP, STY, AUT, GBR, NED, ITA, RUS, TUR, QAT, SAU and 2022: BHR, POR, MON, AUT, HUN, BEL, RUS, USA, SAU, ABU). [src: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aston_Martin_in_Formula_One#2021%E2%80%93present]
I still think VET is the better overall driver but it shows that Lance definitely isn't a bad driver.
And even this year he wasn't that bad. In most races he wasn't THAT far from ALO, most of the time staying within 5 places of ALO - even beating ALO in ESP.
Is he a future WDC? No, I don't think so. Is he a bad driver? Absolutely not. Is he a solid midfield driver? Absolutely, with occasional flashes to very good. Is he a regular podium contender? No, he is missing consistency, and quite a lot of it. However, I think he's talented enough to have earned his seat on merit so far.
The strange thing about Lance is that sometimes he's showing signs of being a great driver, doing some risky and creative passes, while at other times he's showing how useless he is by doing some of the most idiotic things imagineable on track.
I saw someone at hungary that had a sign for him. It was clever "lets rock and stroll!" But like. How does this guy have fans outside of his mom and sister? Can you imagine spending a few hundred, if not a few thousand, to cheer for Lance Stroll?! You can pick. You can literally choose what driver you like. And there are people that settle on stroll lmao.
I can only imagine its other nepo babies. Theyre like "see? People like us can be handed everything we want! If we work as little as Lance, we too can be what we want purely through our family name."
Well he is Canadian, so if there are fans from Canada...look I'm American and support Haas.
@@laurenmp7486 My condolences. With any luck Andretti will be somebody to root for soon...

Lance absolutely deserves a seat, and is a good driver. His pitfalls come from lack of experience, and with each year he gets a little better. In a young sport, people seem to forget 24 is still young, and he will continue to improve each year as he has done the past few years.
The 'lack of experience excuse' can no longer be used anymore. Even then, great drivers show themselves almost immediately. Pretty much any driver that takes years to come around will always only be mediocre. Racing is a sport you either have it or you dont and youll know almost immediately.
there's no potential anymore that is his peak , he never caught anyone's eye for his talent nor his consistency.
@@junkiexl86for Lance’s case it’s debatable. He was the only guy to make the jump from F3 to F1 since F1 started having significantly bigger cars in 2017. So Lance never learned the skills F2 offered unlike recent rookies, simply because his dad rushed him to F1 with the money. Its no surprise it took forever for him to get better. On racedays he’s had great consistent pace over the years, but it just took forever to get there
It is now embarrassing for AM .. he almost looks unsafe.
Name of that song on 0:50 ? thanx
Honestly Strolls pace ceiling is really high. He is just SO inconsistent that its horrible, sometimes he just has 0 awareness or just super slow. Although he has the pace to be high up sometimes, he doesnt deserve an F1 seat imo when he is so inconsistent and just flat out braindead sometimes
I still laugh thinking about that time when RyanAir roasted Lance Stroll in a tweet about 'buying a preferred seat'...no lead up, just pure out-of-the-blue savage
You summed it up pretty well. Thank you.
Lawrence would never drop Lance and nor should he. He’s the major shareholder and in charge of the team. End of the day the goal is to develop the best car. With the best car Lance will win races and who knows may even win a championship. It’s a tough ask for them to get there though. They’re obviously targeting the Honda era a few years away yet.
Every other week we have videos saying he’s either terrible or super underrated-he’s just mid, he seems like a nice guy and I personally do root for him in F1 but I think he’d be better off in WEC
Once he is over his driving ambition, he will become part of the team management team. So the experience he is getting as being a driver will ultimately help in future positions he holds.
His Father is not stupid, so he is building an empire for his son to inherit. Whilst they are still in a development phase, Lance is OK. But do not be surprised to see Lance move to a management position in the next few years. If I was Lawrence Stroll I would be advising my son to breed well. It worked for Yosh Verstaffen, Lances offspring will have a team owned by Grandad ready to go.
Stroll is 15 behind Norris. Norris is like 70 behind Alonso....
The problem there is the McLaren was a dog until the recent upgrades. Piastri is now scoring more points than Alonso. If it wasn't for Max and his rocket ship, Lando would now be a two time race winner.
Will your youtube channel has saved my life😭
You also have 2 INDYCAR races as well one yesterday and one today in a few hours from now
If you ever drove in Toronto or Montreal you would have absolutely 0 expectations of Stroll or Latifi. Surprisingly, they still managed to dissapoint.
Sir Lancelot may deserve to be an F1 driver, but it will always be as a back marker. Sure he is good in the rain, however that appears to be all he has in his toolbox.
Aston Martin need a sports car program. The Lance could be 'promoted' to head up the sports car team, leaving a potential seat for someone better. Lance can possibly win a world championship in sportscars, eh, Alonso?
Im possibly giving a huge benefit of the doubt to Lance here - but I cant help wonder if Lance and Latifi are having similar ideas. Look at Laurence Stroll - he is a gigantic business magnate, and he clearly knows a thing or two about business. Lance doesnt, but he does know racing. So he's not set the racing world on fire - but he has been around others who have. Vettel, Alonso etc. Aston's revolving door of drivers has been nothing more than the equivalent of the military giving grunts shiny tech - its all R&D. They hire Lance and tell him to drive however he wants - which mostly sees him push himself beyond his capabilities - bringing the points down. That means more tunnel time, more of that sweet, sweet R&D time. And then who sends reliable data back? Well, one of them other WDC title holders they keep hiring. They'll do this til Alonso retires too - they essentially give the pros a golden handshake to retire on and in return they give them hoardes of raw data.
Lance will step down once that Aston starts getting real quick - and potentially competitive. At which point he's a former driver, with business experience with his dad as his 2nd in command, access to heaps of raw testing data, tested by championship winning drivers. They've already poached a bunch of engineers from some good teams and now there's a 200mill factory where they can test all this
#StrollsNewRole thank you for coming to my stoned TEDTalk.
Lance is proof that even a legally blind person can drive for an F1 team as long as your dad owns the team.
Assuming said person got a super licence, which you cannot go out and buy however much money you have
@@MrSniperfox29 I mean, Mazepin managed to get a superlicence aswell...
Lawrence is a smart man. I guarantee he has given his son and ultimatum from the time he took over the team. Granted this goal set would be much more lenient having his father at the helm but I know there is still goals to be met or he will be replaced.
Thanks as always for your great content. Specifically though how you put it together. It’s so so refreshing to hear someone with a great tone of phrase and who says the things that 99% of F1 reporters don’t say. Please keep going!
Any news about Stroll changing category? Or is that just fake news? Despite Daddy Strolls previous business success, F1 is a very different animal and perhaps it’s beyond even his “business acumen” to work out how to succeed with it. Time to bail out??
Stroll is ok, probably better than your average F3 and F2 drivers
Was dominant in Formula 3 and completely outclassed George Russell that year in an identical car, despite being a year younger than George.
Yepp. People all whine that he had a Prema and everything. But with the best team you still need to win. Sean Gelael or Roy Nissany are great examples of that
@lando1071 "There's a better chance of Max losing his seat than of Stroll losing his", with blood ties to the owner I would agree. The crazy thing is that he shows some streaks of talent in the practice and some qualifying sessions, but come race day he seems to forget he learned everything he learned in the previous sessions. If he wants to race maybe he should pick a different discipline.
Aston Martin have improved their car, they’ve had some great second drivers who’ve helped develop the car and bring some serious experience and technical knowledge to bear on the engineering. Lance hasn’t moved at the same pace as that development, he’s not a bad driver by any stretch of the imagination but he’s unreliable, will he be challenging all the way through to Q3 and into the race or will he tail off in Q2 and be mired in the backmarkers in the race?
Inconsistency kills teams, it doesn’t bring reliable data that can be used to improve the car over the race weekend AND the further improvement is hampered. As I say, he’s not BAD, he’s just had his chance and if his Dad has got any minerals he’ll be sliding Lance sideways into a ‘technical’ job or encouraging him to go into Le Mans or other series that Aston Martin have interests in.
He never speaks more than 5 sec in every interview....
To say something positive. This is true fatherly love
AM have bigger problems. If their car keeps dropped backwards, as it has been, you get into the danger zone with Alonso. He has both said and shown that if he believes he has given everything and made no mistakes and the car cannot finish in the top 10, he can't be arsed and won't finish races. They are a big upgrade from Alpine away from that potentially being reality at some circuits, given they are now sitting as the 4th fastest team on pace and having to fight tooth and nail to score a handful of points at best per race. Hopefully (for them, I don't care either way) they have some big upgrades coming after the mid season break but from what I've read recently they may have gone down a development rabbit hole and hit a dead end so there's no certainty there. Luckily for them Alpine are really the only team close to them on pace who they are regularly beating so realistically it would be them who need to bring the updates to overtake them and it's Alpine so I won't hold my breathe.

What if they get Checo from red bull to partner alonso? I would love that experienced combo
