Ford's traction control is pretty notorious for ignoring max throttle input from a stop (many others do it as well). You can learn to trick it by progressively applying throttle from a stop to a degree, but it doesn't always work. Even turning the traction control "off" will still result in throttle dampening. It's all computer and almost no turbo lag. You can even see the RPMs don't climb in proportion to throttle input. The good news is that it all goes away with a proper tune.

I live in Chicago, rust is inevitable. I like a “TRUCK” reliable and simple. I love frontier feels like a truck, I love the styling as well but my favorite thing I love about it is the drivetrain. The VQ series engine has been around forever and the 9spd trans is actually also found in the bigger titan(so it’s overkill for the frontier) and also used in the Aston Marlon DBX. Also the transmission doesn’t gear hunt or lugs around. Back to my point of rust, last thing I wanna be doing when my truck is 150k miles and I have to change the cats or a turbo is dealing with multiple rusted bolts and nuts. Most turbo engines these days when they fail you have to replace everything. Could you imagine changing the turbos on that ford when it’s all crusty. Also when a turbo blows depending on how bad it is, you to change the intercooler also.

The [possible] maintenance cost's to have your turbo's replaced/rebuilt almost negates owning one. Doubt you'll see alot of these newer turbo vehicles on the road in 20 years without having big dollar repair bills. No chance that owner's will want to pay a $5000+ shop repair estimate. I shopped the 19-23 rangers and 22-23 frontier pro 4x and landed on the ranger for a few reasons. Last gen still has a lot of buttons (not a fan of the new vertical screen). The power is notably more in the ford though Nissan is pretty solid. The seats and interior feels much better build quality to me. I drive a couple hours every weekend to ski and fly fish and the sear comfort of the ford made a big difference to me. At the time the frontier didn’t come with a telescopic steering wheel.
Nissan steering is love it or hate it. For me, it was a hate it but you’d probably get used to it. What really got to me is the horrible turning radius. I live in Denver so the tighter radius of the ford is nice. The Nissan is a mid size that drives like a full size but feels like a mid size on the inside.
Reliability - rangers have HORRIBLE transmission issues. Absolutely get the drivetrain warranty. That said, the engine in that Ranger has been battle tested since like 2014 internationally. The engine itself does quite well. The Nissan also had some tranny issues in the Facebook pages I was part of, though much less. The early runs of that truck seemed to have a lot of random “early run” issues like the roof leaking in some spots.
If you’re a big guy (over 6 foot) you’ll probably like the ford more. If you have people that will regularly be in the backseat, probably ford. If you live in a smaller town where turning radius doesn’t matter and you don’t have a ford dealer for a few hours, take a look at the Nissan. The Nissan was no slouch, but FWIW I expected to buy a pro4x after all my research and after test drives it was clear the Ranger was for me. Take this all with a grain of salt as the new Ranger is a little wider and the screen is a different dynamic than what I have. Hope this helps someone in their search!

I just took delivery of my Ranger 2.7 Lariat in October. I like both brands even though I have experienced more reliability issues in recent years with Nissan. I do think the 60.40 rear seat and the 6 foot box are huge assets for the Nissan, enough that I may have gone a different direction last year when I ordered by truck. I do wonder if the Nissan box can fit. 4 ft sheet of plywood between the wheel wells, that is also a big deal.

I don’t know why but the lack of pain under the hood and inner fenders on the Nissan makes me feel like Nissan cut a bunch of corners. And the fact that the ranger is priced more competitive than the Nissan and it may not be for everyone but on the ford if you get the e locker you can use it in 2wd 4H AND 4L. the Nissan only lets you use it in 4L and the payload and towing is better on the ford not to mention the cab is bigger and more comfortable in the ford you don’t seat so up right on the back seat as you do the Nissan .

I got me the 2023 Frontier SV. Rear wheel drive, with no off-roading add-ons. It does everything I need it to do, and does it very well, without having to splurge on anything bigger.
I do like the heavier steering as it feels connected, and it's not twitchy at speed like I've seen and felt in some vehicles of similar size.
Even though it does feel like a truck, it still corners surprisingly well without the tires screaming for mercy, and I can make a U-turn from a left turn lane into a two-lane road without having do a 3-point.
When I got it, it was a toss-up between that and the Tacoma, but Nissan won we overall with the way it felt and drove. Plus, Toyota couldn't offer me the pricing that Nissan did.

Time for another f250 Vs f350, a 2500 Vs 3500, hd Vs big hd GMC. For those who aren't towing, but hauling in the bed. IBC's, tools, snowmobiles, big quads/SBS. Not all of us are towing. Especially not in the snow since the trailer can be an anchor. Or your employees don't all have a driver license to tow. Parking in the city with a trailer can also be a pain. And fleet vehicles are also not bought for towing. A railroad truck with tools isn't towing, just hauling in the bed.
