      @@kukukuki8297 Oh god first off I will say the absolute worst thing you can do is to compare yourself with others when it comes to this field of work since there are different levels of competition in every city. I had the great bad luck that my city has a tattoo shop at like every corner so for me it took 3 years because they all said "we dont need more competition" a guy who worked an hour from me said it took him 5 months and he had barely any art experience while I had gone to school, so honestly? Its alot about connections/luck when trying to get a foot in, if youve got neither you just need to be hellishly stubborn.

    • @pennyt2777
      @pennyt2777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@ndiaperkins5999 Well first off you need to know that there are MANY tattoo artists who start off barely being able to draw stick figures, I found that out while working, hearing it from their own mouths and oh boy did that kind of piss me off. I would say that every shop will tell you different things they look for so if youre just starting, put together a portfolio of pieces you feel really proud of. Dont think you need to be Rembrandt to make it, you can start off at any stage of art as long as youre willing to work and youre stubborn. I would say scan all your pieces into a computer, make it a PDF portfolio and email it out to any shop you have your eye on. Its a pandemic so now is the time for the shy folks! Just keep at it, send it everywhere and be aware that some shops are a little rude because they get away with it (its not a reflection on anyones skill its just a pattern Ive noticed.)

    You're such a positive tattoo artist, most of the artists I've talked to are super negative about the industry which is clearly a way to scare my off but I've been getting tattooed by different artist and can of dipping my toe in a bit without being forward about wanting an apprenticeship just because I'm still in art school. So all this knowledge you share is super helpful and generous. Thank you so much!

    So my question is, how do you feel after 3 years as a tattoo artist. I just became an apprentice and I'm loving every moment of it. My boss isn't a douche and isn't making me do weird stuff like wash his car, he's actually teaching me. Not sure if that correlates to how you perceive the career later on. I feel like people who have a bad apprenticeship generally had a bad taste in their mouth for the industry

      What jobs do you have to do in your apprenticeship? How much do you clean and to what extent? For example in mine, I scrub the skirting boards and door frames weekly. I also run small errands for the tattooists eg. grab there lunch, put their money in their bank accounts etc. Just want to know if yours is similar? Also how soon did you start learning?

    I’m 29 and as an artist, I never experienced happiness in any job I had before... as a kid, art was more of a hobby to me..having a steady ($) job wasn’t counting art at all..starving artists..I’m talking about the 90s..mom used to say “I don’t wanna see you at the corner of the street selling your art and starving to death”...talk about dream killer..ironically, art brought me back to not starving to death today ( got a job at Sephora) and let me tell you, I was a cashier and I didn’t care that I wasn’t on stage doing client’s makeup.. and I didn’t care that I was standing up for so many hrs to come out after 12am for a two hr ride from Manhattan all the way to Rockaway (that meant the A line all the way to the last stop and then walk 15 minutes)I didn’t care.. I was so happy..I was in the middle of Times Square working at Sephora!... that was only a seasonal job..(at this point I finished drawing and inking one sketchbook..everyday I would draw in the train) and I made up my mind..and decided to become a tattoo artist.. idk what it is about the sound of that machine mannnn lol ..let’s just say I’m practicing everyday ..whether it’s drawing in my sketchbook or coming up with ideas for my portfolio or watching TH-cam videos or tattoing on practice skin ..it’s trilling..I’m happy (sorry for the long message)

    Thanks for sharing ! :) My shop was just looking for part time help and maybe a bit of art preparation. I was maybe only a year out of school and had a ton of art to show but nothing really 'tattooesque' . But i just organised a portfolio with what i had making sure to put a mixture of every style and medium I've tried. They took me on immediately, i was full time within the first month and offered an Apprenticeship a year into working there. It all comes down to luck and perseverance i think, work hard to learn new styles and techniques and people will most certainly notice! Loved the video Holly :)

    6:48 I just saw a tattoo on the first episode of the newest current season of ink master that looked just like, or very similar, to your moth drawing. It even had the skull, and I honestly think that your drawing looks so so much better.

      @OfficialPulseDrummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the skull isn't a stylistic choice, it's the death's head hawk moth (the same one that was a very prominent inclusion in silence of the lambs) it's a very common moth to tattoo nowadays, i actually have one on each of my thighs!

    Your videos have made me so excited to finally make a portfolio!! I've always considered being a tattooist but I've always assumed I would never be confident enough with my art to permanently put it on someone's body. I recently started doing henna, though, and practicing designs I would want as tattoos and I think it's extremely fun (though I'm not very good at it yet) and people have suddenly been telling me that they would get my designs as tattoos and someone even recently asked me if they could get one of my drawings as a tattoo!! So thank you for giving me the confidence to actually take the first steps to trying to become an apprentice.

But I guess it also depends on where you want to be an apprentice. I hope one day I can be confident with my portfolio to show it to an artist too. And thank you your videos help a lot!

      Most shops actually look down on you if you've already purchased a tattoo machine and have done "scratchers" before learning good safety habits. They're less likely to take you on because they figure un-teaching you the bad habits is more work than it's worth.

    Hey Holly! I have a question about apprenticeships. To put a long story short, the only places looking for apprentices at the moment aren't the best shops. they're not bad, just very standard. As someone looking for an apprenticeship, is an okay shop better than nothing? or should I wait it out? Honestly no amazing shops are taking apprenticeships anywhere near me and I've been accepted to a few in more average level shops. I've been debating this for a while!!

    • @KathleenH-do8dl

      a lot of people are under the impression that a good artist is someone who can whip something out in no time with no reference. as any artist worth their salt will tell you:
      nobody is able to draw something from memory/imagination perfectly, especially newer artists. (the pressure of being perfect is real out here) relying on that will only hinder your growth as an artist and cause you frustration. NEVER be afraid or ashamed to use a reference. professionals use things as reference all the time!! trying to draw something without a reference is like trying to cook without pots and pans. it’s a key tool that you can’t miss out on, especially new artist who aren’t completely certain about their creative process and need boosters for their imagination. i know i do! using a reference allows you to not worry about missing details or crucial body parts/muscles etc. and focus more on your technique/process/muscle memory building.
      references are what give you key details about a piece that you don’t want to miss or distort. the more you practice drawing, the faster and better you will become. wishing you luck on your journey!!

    Hey Holly! Thank you so much for your honest and helpful videos. I have a quick question that maybe you could help me with. I would be very very grateful if you have a second. I actually am not sure if portfolio for tattoo apprenticeship should be all hand-drawn originals or it should be prints of your designs (so in that case i can also draw on ipad, im a huge fan of digital painting)? I am pretty confused about this and sorry for my lack of knowledge haha :)

      Practice other stuff. Make a list of things you can't draw that are common to be tattooed and maybe put them in a hat and pull them out and give them a try, put the paper back and every time you pull it out you have to work on that. Being able to draw multiple things will help a lot☺

    I've been working towards my portfolio for a while no and not really known how to progress it further, so this video has really helped. I have been drawing with pencils and paper and digitally also just to experiment and see what i can do. Bit of a weird question but for your colour designs are you just using basic colouring pencils you can buy from a craft shop or is it something else?
    TIA
    Jasmin

      +phatbastard0alkaline I'm 33, and was 29ish when I made this portfolio/started my apprenticeship. I've been drawing since I was little but only really started trying hard once I decided to get into tattooing

    How do you get inspired? Are these paintings all just created by your mind or do you have a picture in front of you ?

    Hey there! I know you're busy so it's okay if you can't get back to me but I have a question for you.
    I am an airbrush artist and have been in my apprenticeship for 6 months now, and I have just started tattooing fruits. However, one thing that I am finding immediately apparent is that my lines are remarkably shakey -- and I was afraid of this because I have had shakey hands my entire life (and airbrushing is much more forgiving than tattooing). So it's been very disheartening recently to see myself doing something poorly because of something that I can't really control.
    Do you have any tips on how to help with shaking hands, and self confidence when starting out? I really want this to work out, but watching my biggest fear become a reality has really thrown a wrench in my confidence lately.
    I have been learning on Coils, and do drawings with the machine attached to a pencil (so I can adjust to the weight) but it hasn't helped me out at all.
    It would mean the world to me if you took a look at what I airbrush so you can get an idea from where I'm coming from:
