I over-analyzed dumb lyrics

A big thank you to Professor Arran Stibbe for putting up with me!
Travis Scott (‘UTOPIA, ‘Astroworld’), Playboi Carti (‘Whole Lotta Red’, ‘Sky’) and Yeat (‘2093’, ‘Up 2 Me’). What do those three hip-hop stars have in common? They are all rappers who, at one point or another, have been criticised and clowned for their lyrics.
Whether it’s Travis Scott’s proclamation of ‘stroke my cactus’ on ‘Through the late night’, Yeat’s made-up words found on tracks like ‘If we being real’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Money so big’, or Playboi Carti’s repetitive adlibs on songs like ‘FE!N’, ‘CARNIVAL’ and ‘Magnolia’; they, amongst other rappers in the ‘new generation’, seem to have made themselves easy targets for ridicule.
But, in my mind, a lot of this criticism stems from a lack of understanding. For example, Ken Carson (‘Overseas’, ‘ss’, ‘Fighting My Demons’) was mocked relentlessly when, on the song ‘i need u’ (‘A Great Chaos’), he claimed that its possible to spend money on, well, money. People laughed at him for what they assumed was an oversight on his part, however, when you think about it, Ken was obviously referring to making investments, i.e. spending money to make money.
Now, aside from that one example, I can think of dozens of instances where rappers have been misunderstood and, as a result, teased. But, as far as I can tell, no one is doing anything about it and many rappers continue to be tormented to this day for ‘dumb lyrics’ that, in my opinion, are actually incredibly smart.
Which is why, in this video, I’m headed over to genius.com (lyric genius) to use my skills in over-analysis and prove that these ‘bad lyricists’ are actually geniuses!
First, I started with ‘My Eyes’ rapper Travis Scott, and looked at a lyric from ‘Never Catch Me’ (‘Rodeo’) that seemingly centres around potty humour. Once I had proven the hidden intellect that lies beyond most critics’ comprehension, I moved on to Yeat - who is no stranger to this channel. But rather than translating his lyrics again, I instead highlighted the social commentary he was making on ‘Jus Wokeup’ (‘4L’).
Feeling confident in my newfound over-analysis abilities, I took on my biggest challenge yet: Jack Harlow (‘Lovin On Me’, ‘First Class’, ‘Industry Baby’). Although there was a slight sense of sarcasm in my annotation of ‘Churchill Downs’, feat Drake, I think I did a pretty good job of masking my distain for the lyric in question.
Whatever the case, I made sure that the next two rappers on my list, Gunna (‘one of wun’, ‘on one tonight’, ‘prada dem’) and Playboi Carti (‘2024’, ‘backr00ms’, ‘H00DBYAIR’) were easier to praise. But then came NAV (‘Lemonade’, feat Don Toliver, ‘Tap’, ‘Champion’), Baby Keem (‘leavemealone’, ‘family ties’, ‘The Melodic Blue’) and Ty Dolla $ign (‘VULTURES 1’, ‘BURN’, ‘Or Nah’).
And, as the lyrics became funnier and more ridiculous, so did my annotations. But had I completely lost sight of the task at hand? Had I forgotten the very reason for starting this genius-annotating journey? Was my over-analysis all for nothing? You’ll have to watch to find out.
If you, by the time you’re reading this, have already watched the video, then I hope you enjoyed it!

Gotta disagree on the first one-- his capablity of "shitting all day" is a clear reference to Sigmund Frued's second stage of psychosexual development. Frued famously states that a child raised by passive adults will develop an "expulsive" personality. Now, Scott's use of the word "diaper" refers to his desire to have been nurtured by his parents.
This masterful verse showcases his deep issues with authority and the effects of his childhood on his present self. He is truly the goat

9:36 In this lyric, many people will probably not understand it's true meanings so allow me to help you understand it. He says that "one plus one is three" which is obviously not true, to make fun of the very few people who truly believe in it. And since there're so little people who actually believe in it, it shows that he notices and cares about every single little detail, no matter how small. This line could also be Lil Baby's knowledge in the world of mathematics, as he shows that in the multiverse theory, there could be a universe where one plus one is actually three, proving his knowledge. It could also mean that he had a lot of sexual intercourse with women, showing that when one male has sexual intercourse with another female, the female has a baby making the third number. This could also show how confident Lil Baby is and how much confidence we should have ourselves, as he says it loud and confidently and publishing it in a song, which could go viral for everyone's ear to hear. He truly is the greatest rapper alive. He shows that he is very observant and cares about every small detail, his ability to attract many women to have sexual intercourse with, his knowledge about mathematics and the multiverse theory, and how much confidence we should have. This line was made by a true lyrical legend but we didn't understand it. We should be ashamed by ourselves and praise him.
1 + 1 = 3 means he did the sex
I would rather interpret it as a critique to the over-rationalizing of our modern lives, sometimes to the detriment of authentic, emotional, human experiences. Saying "1+1=3" is a defiance of the most basic rule of mathematics that seeks to demonstrate the emptiness of mathematical logic: it is nothing but a set of rules created by humans for humans with no application to the natural world, and concepts such as "one", "two" and "three" are nothing but metaphysical constructions that serve only themselves, an oxymoronic ouroboros. This lyric shows the listener that, rather than attach oneself to meaningless rationality, one should enjoy the things in the material world, all the things in the same plane of existence as ours: for we, humans, are nothing but sacks of flesh who received the opportunity to love, sing, dream; enjoy the cosmos and all things in it that truly matter.
I think it's more of a reference to the book 1984, by George Orwell. In the book, the Party has brainwashed everyone into believing that "2 + 2 = 5". When Lil Baby says "1 + 1 = 3", he is saying that the media, like the Party, has made everyone believe that these lyrics have no meaning and are "dumb" despite the fact that the true meanings were right in front of our faces.
9:35 “one plus one is three”
Here, Lil Baby may at first appear to be making an attempt at satire since the majority of the population do, in fact, know that his statement is incorrect, and therefore by making himself seem as though he lacks knowledge, listeners would find this entertaining to hear.
However, upon analysing this at a deeper level, it appears that Lil Baby could be questioning what we all know. As this quote appears to be so simple at face value, the rapper could be asking listeners to reevaluate their lives and minds to understand whether we really know what we think we know. For example, is one plus one really two? How do we know that? Who came up with ideas such as these, and were they consequently forced into our gullible minds since the ancient times of mankind, so that these beliefs are what we stick with till this very day?
Alternatively, this could be Lil Baby’s attempt to share his varying perspective with the world, and to suggest that we all deserve to have a voice and individual opinion on matters such as these. You should be able to choose for yourself whatever you want one plus one to be. He could be trying to send the message that we are free, and we are able to do whatever we put our minds to.
Ultimately, this philosophical quote may be pointing to the fact that Lil Baby is having an existential crisis and wanted to share that with whatever listeners would be willing to try to understand.

Seems to be a lament of wasted money on frivolous pleasures, likely including expensive clothing, and "money" which may indicate bad investments or money spent to earn more money. To paint a larger picture, this could be a larger critique of consumerist culture at large, and is a reminder of material life's ephemeral nature.

The average English teacher
As an English major, I can confirm that this is essentially what using the English-major skillset feels like.
I like how the video descended into madness after Arran Stibbe approved his work with “yeah yeah yeah, definitely”
The lyric "order some more money" by Chief Keef in "Nightcrawler" may initially appear simplistic, but it carries a deeper meaning that critiques modern consumer culture and the commodification of wealth. By treating money as something that can be casually ordered, Chief Keef highlights the detachment from traditional notions of earning and the ease with which wealth can be acquired by those with power and influence. This line reflects the materialism and endless cycle of consumption in contemporary society, while also serving as a symbol of Chief Keef's own empowerment and success. Moreover, there’s an underlying irony in how the lyric trivializes money, offering a subtle commentary on the absurdity and skewed perceptions that come with extreme wealth, making the lyric far more than just a superficial boast.

Not saying it's an amazing lyric by any stretch, but I think he did Jack Harlow a little dirty here. If you listen, Jack puts emphasis on the word "not," which is a homophone of "knot," itself a slang term denoting a wad of cash... which also happens to be what he's "not" going to pull out. It isn't the greatest example of wordplay the world has ever seen but there is something there, at least.

Actually I took time to look at the line properly and he plays on the word “not” by also replacing it with its homophone “knot”.
He implies that his grandpa would have a heart attack if he just pulled a hunnid grand out so he’s gonna wrap it in a knot to make it look smaller than it is with a klnot” to “not” make it look like he’s pulling a hunnid grand out when he is.
Also implying that he’s family has never seen so much money but he’s money now always come with a knot tied to it because it’s a lot.
That’s genuinely how they think they’re representing themselves in rap lyrics anyway, so your video serves to non-ironically make them look like geniuses. 😂
Stroke my cactus (It's lit‼️)
This is a masterclass in the branch of interpretation theory called "value maximization", which in the field of humanities is a method of interpreting a work of art or communication in its broadest sense.
This is a way of disconnecting the work from its creator and an underlying intention, and instead, it enables the interpreter to derive as much artistic value out of an artwork as possible while still maintaining consistency with the artwork, and without having to ask the creator about intention, the value maximized interpretation can be reconnected back to the creator.
I once had a paper where I interpreted Fortnite as the main reason for the heightened communicative and cognitive skills as seen in gen Z lmao
This take on the theory of value maximization comes from Stephen Davies’ “The Philosophy of Art”, and he would have been hella proud watching your over-analysis! Good on ya lad

Arran Stibbe looked like he was about to cry 😭
You missed a meaning of the Jack Harlow quote. What he means is that he refers to his man parts as "a hunnid grand" and his grandpa would be horrified to see that Jack Harlow isn't continuing the Harlow family legacy (by pulling out), especially given his newly acquired fame bringing prosperity to the line. That's why he goes on to confirm that he is going to continue to procreate, even if he does not desire to do so, to satisfy his grandpa's needs.

I actually interpreted Ken Carson's song, "Hardcore," shown at 7:37, to insinuate that his female companion is only with the esteemed rapper for the money, or "green," that he produces due to his lucrative business and skill shown in the rap industry. slightly further on, Carson puts emphasis on the "huh," within the line, showing that he believes the previous line to be a question, as if he's asking someone about what his girl said about him behind his back. This insinuates to the audience that most female friends that he associate with only care about his money and not the rapper as a person. Carson goes on further to explain that thinking that Ken Carson is only important due to the money he receives, and not the cultural impact he has made on rap itself, is not healthy, by using the metaphor of describing him as kale. This in itself is a double entendre, as Kale, while showing itself to be a stereotypical, "healthy," food, is also green, emphasising the imagery of Ken Carson being viewed as green, or made of money. However, this is contrasted by the following line, as Ken Carson describes how he can fly out his female companion easily, showing that if he wants, he can treat money as if it is no object, and spend it on benign things such as flights for acquaintances.
-- Coming from a grade 9 english GCSE student. Thank you, Thank you, I'll be here all night.
No you're not listening to lil baby because I think this is what he meant. One plus one is three, a line from Lil Baby's song "Every chance I get" is a multifaceted example of the complexity and nuance that are frequently seen in modern rap lyrics. Here is a thorough examination of this line from several perspectives: Since the sum of one and one is obviously two, the statement "one plus one is three" is false mathematically. But us the simple human beings we are just can understand the pure "genius" in those 5 words and how deep it actually goes. In poetic language, the goal of this type of quantitative exaggeration is to make a powerful, unforgettable statement rather than to provide an exact calculation. This line highlights a more general idea or argument by purposefully deviating from accepted logic. The idea that the product of two things may prove bigger than the sum of their individual parts could be represented by the lyrics. This illustrates a recurrent topic in synergistic or collaborative environments, where the combined effect of individual contributions can yield outcomes that are greater than the arithmetic sum of their parts. Rappers frequently utilize poetic license to express difficult feelings, concepts, or cultural criticism through nonliteral language. Lil Baby might be using a type of creative exaggeration when he says, "One plus one is three," to emphasize the importance of a certain experience or relationship in his life. This may be interpreted as an attempt to emphasize how some experiences go beyond common perceptions or assumptions. To truly comprehend this sentence, one must take into account both Lil Baby's personal experiences and the song's setting. Themes of achievement, acknowledgement, and personal development are explored in the song "Every chance I get ." The song's lyrics may be a reflection of Lil Baby's journey, where his collaborations and hard work have led to extraordinary or unexpected results. "One plus one is three" could stand for his accomplishments or the influence of his partnerships in this context, both of which have greatly beyond projections. Philosophically, this song's lyrics could be seen as challenging accepted wisdom or arguing that life is more complicated than simple math's. Linguistically speaking, the lyric utilizes a paradoxical assertion to draw the listener in and elicit discussion. Poetic and lyrical traditions, where the aim is to generate memorable and impactful statements that reverberate beyond literal meanings, frequently employ paradoxes like these. This style decision improves the lyric's creative value and adds to the song's overall effect. In conclusion the song "Every chance I get" by Lil Baby is a great illustration of how modern rap sometimes combines literal and figurative language to communicate deeper ideas. The poem highlights themes of synergy, creative expression, and the unexpected results of collaborative efforts by deviating from mathematical correctness. It is a perfect example of how artists employ language to subvert social standards and elicit thought, giving their lyrical substance depth and striking a chord with listeners on several levels.
