Ok, I do not wish to be miserabilist, but ... The mother feeling 'happier' and 'better informed' is not a medical issue. The point made about 'more-informed informed consent' is a stretch at best. The decision to go ahead with the surgery was unlikely to be any different without this VR excursion. The mother was not the patient so this did not benefit the patient in any way. Is this a sensible use of resources when the NHS is so over-stretched? How many routine blood-tests could have been done instead? I worry that 'sexy' medicine is the enemy of important medicine.
The VR equipment and software was donated by the company that makes it so it could accumulate real world data and commentary. It will then use that data to market its product to other hospitals in other countries such as the USA which doesn’t have the equivalent of the NHS. So you aren’t liable to see it in any other U.K. hospitals for a very long time. Meanwhile the NHS tells parents that they can’t take their child to another country for treatment. They must keep their child in the U.K. where he will certainly die. Great system.

Truly immersive virtual reality would mean once in it you cant get put unless its programed to allow you to ask to get out. Kinda crazy, huh?
