For mechanical sirens, sound does come out the front. In a mechanical siren like the one you have there, it looks like it's forcing the air out the sides with centripetal(centrifugal?) force, and then shutting off the outlets, creating pressure waves on both sides of those holes, which makes sound come out both the holes, and out the front.
Actually some sound does come out of the intake, not much, but a little bit. Its the reason why the 3rd gen ACA Allertor 125 had a larger intake cone then previous generations. Its to preject thevsound more efficiently.
Loved it, my grandson wanted to watch because he is OBSESSED with Tornado sirens and went crazy after your last one! But I wanted him to see how they work so we have subscribed to your channel because you said you had an actual warning siren that you were going to show us how it work in the near future! And your first siren sounded like a car alarm on steroids! LOL We will be back soon Thank for posting this , made my grandson happy :)
That huge speaker he pulled out is called a, "Atlas Speaker". There are two kinds. The dual driver and the single driver. They would usually be found on the, Federal Signal E.O.W.S. series sirens. The E.O.W.S. "SiraTone" controllers would have "amplifiers" which amplify the sound coming out of the speaker. The rotating E.O.W.S. sirens "408,612,816" would have 4,6,8 dual dual driver speakers facing one way. When the siren activates, the speakers would rotate on a big box. The non-rotating E.O.W.S. sirens "1212" would have 12 single driver speakers facing all ways. There are 6 sides with 2 speakers. The E.O.W.S. 1212 prototype (115) has different speakers but acts similar to the normal 1212. All E.O.W.S. sirens have been discontinued.
Hey, how can you power that AC motor with a DC source? What determines if a brush motor is universal? I know there are plenty of DC brush motors, but wouldn't they just vibrate if you ran them on AC?
Oh most of the Chrysler Air Raid Sirens were Flat Head 331 Cu In Gasoline Engine, they were essentially an Engine mounted to an over centre clutch that drove the Vane impeller to produce the sound.
The thunderbolt 1000 is unique because of the blower thing that it has. It has 1 port instead of the same amount as the chopper and instead of being quiet at low notes, it's actually loud as hell even at low frequencies. The ACA Hurricane is the same sort of system but the thunderbolt is better due to adjustable pitches, multiple blowers, easier to work on and actually with it's 5M blower, it is louder than the hurricane as a single tone. (Dual tone is about equal or slightly less.)
Also the fact that the t bolt is VERY editable. You can change the top pitch of it, change the rotation speed, even turn off the rotator completely :-D I don't think the hurricane was that changeable. NO mechanical siren was. And if it was a 1003, you can even change the damper timing for the hi lo. The standard timing is a half second on high, and a half second on low. I remember a while back seeing a video on here were a guy had his T bolt set to do 1 second on high and one second on low. So the T bolt is probably the most customisable siren ever :-D
I recognize those big things. Those big horns look to be from one of federal signal’s “Emergency Outdoor Warning System” (EOWS) 612, 812, or 1212 tornado sirens.
If Jessica likes loud, obnoxious noises, she should love the sound of town fire whistles!!! Those things make tornado sirens seem like a trumpet solo for a high school band!! I'm originally from MA, and there was a fire whistle in every town. Our fire whistle went off routinely at noon, 5pm, and at either 9pm or 10pm for curfew. For an ambulance it went off once, for school cancellations it went off twice then twice again, for auxiliary fires it went off five times twice, and for local fires it first blew three times and then blew the box number (for example, Box 57 would be five blows followed by seven more blows) three times in succession. To make matters worse, the damn whistle was an eerie and terrifying sound that made your teeth rattle and your bones turn cold. Worse than anything, this horrid whistle would blow whenever there was a fire, including the wee hours of the morning - and, trust me, it was NOT a sound that you want to be awakened by at 4AM!!
Except the loudest whistle only gets 125 decibels measured from 100 feet away. And the chrysler siren they speak of in the video can reach 138 decibels from 100 feets away
Actually the lionKing defender siren made in china is now the largest, but doesn't hold the record for loudest siren because it makes the same decible rating as the chyrlser siren. Since the chrysler siren came first, it still holds the record.
The 3t22 air raid siren has solenoids. Meaning it can make 3 sounds and do Hi-Lo. Also EOWS sirens are built to do hi lo. Also it is the Chrysler Air Raid siren. Thats its name. Just that.
Unlike alot of sirens sold at electronic stores that one seems to actually immitate the emergency vehicles..It's sounds like ones heard in England now days.
the first one, im only part way in and dont know if you'r showing more than one siren.. but it looks and sounds like the kind that go off in houses with security systems.. they were at least installed usually in the basements of homes with security systems in the 90s.. large to huge homes, anyway.
Great video. I really want a big horn speaker like that! Hard to just come accross at random hehe :) All in all, I am inspired by your experimintations and explanations. I wish I was closer to MI, I would love to volunteer for you! The lady Vicky looks allot like my librarian from when I was in school, lol
chrysler hemi there is one out in oakland and it is gas power and it was accually a devision of chrysler marine and they are still a few active examples of the victory air raid siren
@RubertaLang second sequel: As to why most of the video are starring Chris Boden, maybe that's because he is one of the few people of that thing that is doing it fulltime? Quite frankly, Paul Kidwell gets to be the explaining one, or on the cnc equipment, Rick, etc, but they are not there full time, Chris is. Do you watch the vlog that is the behind the scenes of this? In it, Moose, and other people of the staff explain what they do...
@RubertaLang third sequel: To get back to that, does Photon explains for example why that the reflective metal coating of a cd is blasted off under High Voltage discharges? NO, he has fun showing it, but things like, "hey it expands quickly, as it heats way faster thant the plastic support, so it delaminates explosively as the constraints beween the plastic and conductive layer grow superior to the bond of the two layers" No way, so hell, it's my guess, for all I know, and Photon
Wow. Even after the explanation of how the mechanical siren "pumps air", Vicki could not figure out on her own that the mechanical siren would make almost no sound if the front is blocked. Why is Vicki there?
Did you try both red and green together? Steady tone seems worthless. Sound also comes out the front of the mechanical siren even though air is being drawn in.
What makes a siren most noticeable is it moving up and down in pitch. Sounding "Attack" my Federal Signal 2t22A goes up in frequency, stays at its peak five seconds and then descends. Repeat. We heard what sounded like a weed eater or brake squeal. It was a responding firetruck with Q2 siren improperly kept at peak speed - one steady pitch. Many did not even recognize it as a siren.
Um, actually, a lot of the sound *does* also come out of the front of the siren. Air gets sucked in that way, but at the same time, sound is emanating out of there! In fact, with some models, I've noticed that it seems like more sound comes from the suction horn than from the blow ports.
I took a old ww2 air raid siren down out of a old foundry that was being demolished and rewound the stator for 240 volts instead of 3 phase 480. Its works awesome and is extremely loud with twin choppers. It more or less looks like a huge bench grinder with a chopper on each end. 👍
Does he needs a gun for a video presentation? By the way, that power source is big. Nice vid, I always wanted to know how mechanical sirens works. Thanks.
Oh BTW if you remove the three screws holding the outer cone to the voice coil you will see the first diverging cone. you removed the voice coil to magnet screws.
I'm a cop, and I have always loved the sound of the old mechanical sirens, and was never quite sure how they worked, so thanks!
how long have you been a cop?
i hate police
@@SunsetfearOFFICIAL wow, u are so "pUnK"
I actually acquired one and will use it for natural disasters.

It's a joke.

*6:06** EOWS horn??*
I installed small sirens inside the cab of my mustang in the mid 90s called main generators; attached with my alarm system. They were brutal.
Chrysler Victory Siren available in both Gas and Natural Gas.
That big speaker with the 2 sound devices is used in an EOWS 612 6 speakers 12 drivers
where did you get the speaker at the 5:36 mark
charliejohn02 its from a eows siren
The big horn is from a EOWS 612 siren
What is the model number on that large speaker from the air raid siren?
1:28 is me when my schools new fire alarm goes off.
Is the big horn from an EOWS siren?
alertec2202 yes it is
at first i thought it was just called federal signal EOWS (insert model here), but its actually federal signal siratone EOWS* (insert model here)
As soon as he pulled it out i thought "Yup that's an Eows"
the big speaker is from a eows 612 or 812
Hey, how can you power that AC motor with a DC source? What determines if a brush motor is universal? I know there are plenty of DC brush motors, but wouldn't they just vibrate if you ran them on AC?
what kind/brand was the electronic siren because the only one that i though of was an ATI but i dont think so anymore
Oh most of the Chrysler Air Raid Sirens were Flat Head 331 Cu In Gasoline Engine, they were essentially an Engine mounted to an over centre clutch that drove the Vane impeller to produce the sound.

It's also probably one of the furthest carrying sounds under the chrysler... And the single tone is BEASTLY loud!
I know u remembered it, but it's the Chrysler Air Raid siren. It has a maximum output of 138 decibels and can be heard over 2 miles away.
I recognize those big things. Those big horns look to be from one of federal signal’s “Emergency Outdoor Warning System” (EOWS) 612, 812, or 1212 tornado sirens.
Can't wait to see the RM-130 siren. Great video, there are some videos of the Chrysler siren on youtube.
the big horn is for an EOWS 612
That big horn is from an Eows 612 siren.
Are those speaker cones/drivers from an EOWS-612?
John Paul Kalilec yes
Haha Yea they look like it
That is exactly what I was gonna ask.
Until I realized you wrote it.
Nick Silcox Nar she's looking at him with love in her eyes, look, and because his carrying.
:]
the siren your talking about at the end is a Chrystler Air Raid Siren, it was used by the DOD and Civil Defense Departments
YUP! its pwoered by a chrysler FirePower v8, 331ci (5.4l)
Where did you get those massive compression drivers? Off an EOWS?
I thought I was the only one with a strange obsession with tornado sirens. ; )
OMG it's one of the speakers of the EOWS 612. I recognized that when I first saw it
Rachael M me too
The neighbors must love these guys
Yes I love this guys!!! :D

Where did u get that big siren at the 5:35 mark?
probably west shore services
There is a EOWS speaker, did dey get it from WSS? (West shore servicrs
"We're goin' to grab some BIG volts" "Oooooh!"
Actually the lionKing defender siren made in china is now the largest, but doesn't hold the record for loudest siren because it makes the same decible rating as the chyrlser siren. Since the chrysler siren came first, it still holds the record.
Kept me entertained for 14 minutes and 15 seconds. How? I have no idea.
This is one of my favourite vids👍👍
The 3t22 air raid siren has solenoids. Meaning it can make 3 sounds and do Hi-Lo. Also EOWS sirens are built to do hi lo. Also it is the Chrysler Air Raid siren. Thats its name. Just that.
we've got a siren just like that on our team's robot! Out of all the donations to our team, i think that siren was the best one.
Dang! Ware did you get a horn from a EOWS siren?
The mechanical siren reminded me of a Q2B siren
Did anyone else find this when they were like 6 and have just now found it again
Eows 612 Siren horn?
Im a little confused about why Vicki is there?
Gotta love the EOWS 612 horn he pulls out
@crazywarriorman It is A federal 2T22B
Unlike alot of sirens sold at electronic stores that one seems to actually immitate the emergency vehicles..It's sounds like ones heard in England now days.

is that a horn from a eows612
@insAneTunA Most of their videos don't end up on youtube, go to their website to see follow up videos and etc.
I think I just found out why I like sirens. I like them because when they go off, that usually means "SHIT JUST GOT REAL".
Great video. I really want a big horn speaker like that! Hard to just come accross at random hehe :) All in all, I am inspired by your experimintations and explanations. I wish I was closer to MI, I would love to volunteer for you!
The lady Vicky looks allot like my librarian from when I was in school, lol
the big speaker is a EOWS speaker horn.
If you have English subtitles on on the air raid siren part it says: ah ah ah
chrysler hemi there is one out in oakland and it is gas power and it was accually a devision of chrysler marine and they are still a few active examples of the victory air raid siren
And who know what siren that chopper is from
Isn't the mech siren the ones used in Japan?
Actually no this was a siren made by federal signal
What kinda gun is that
What kinda mechanical siren is that
can I have your small siren plz I want to hook it up to my amp see how louds it is
He pulled a speaker from a EOWS 612 Tornado Siren.
8:19 Holy shit! I have one of those in my basement that i got when i was a little kid.

Lol
You bet they did

@RubertaLang second sequel:

Do you watch the vlog that is the behind the scenes of this? In it, Moose, and other people of the staff explain what they do...
sooo when was this video actually made
it just looks and sounds old
@RubertaLang third sequel:

his big horn was from a EOWS 612
Looks like it.
It is
I can tell by the two speakers on the back
Can I have the big white siren please
what makes the sound
Wire coil and magnet
5:36 that is a eows 612/812 horn a bit beaten up but yes it is a eows 612/812 horn also a 2nd one a 6:04 did you guys kill a 612 for this video?
Wow. Even after the explanation of how the mechanical siren "pumps air", Vicki could not figure out on her own that the mechanical siren would make almost no sound if the front is blocked. Why is Vicki there?
I've heard of another gasoline siren! There's a fuel version of the ACA Allertor! That's weird too! Can you try to find one of those and demo it, too?
Did you try both red and green together? Steady tone seems worthless.
Sound also comes out the front of the mechanical siren even though air is being drawn in.
Yes because it's an air raid siren if you remember hearing it is supposed to do that
What makes a siren most noticeable is it moving up and down in pitch.
Robert Gift That would be caused by the driver not using the siren's clutch to coast it instead they kept sounding it louder and louder.
the big speaker is a SiraTone spaker for E.O.W.S
That siren you are talking about was powered by a propane fueled Hemi V8
He forgot to mention that the Chrysler Bell is the loudest air raid siren made.
The mechanical siren had a 6 port chopper I believe
Um, actually, a lot of the sound *does* also come out of the front of the siren. Air gets sucked in that way, but at the same time, sound is emanating out of there! In fact, with some models, I've noticed that it seems like more sound comes from the suction horn than from the blow ports.
lemme guess... large one is an ewos?
please make this video again but on your own... as in without Vicki
Here is a science question for you, if the tornado siren sucks in helium does it make a different sound?
2:23 I laughed when he throw it😂😂
The air raid siren with the gas motor is a Chrysler air raid siren
There's also the B&N Mobil Directo and the RARE Thunderbolt 2000
I took a old ww2 air raid siren down out of a old foundry that was being demolished and rewound the stator for 240 volts instead of 3 phase 480. Its works awesome and is extremely loud with twin choppers. It more or less looks like a huge bench grinder with a chopper on each end. 👍
1:26 I laughed way to hard lmao
Isn't that off of an EOWS?
yes
Can I have your siren for a battle mangers Auckland NZ!!!
I love when you say well the herrings are angery
Does he needs a gun for a video presentation?
By the way, that power source is big. Nice vid, I always wanted to know how mechanical sirens works. Thanks.
Used for the EOWS
11:16 the captions say ah from the sirens noise
Chrystler made the Victory Siren....they did use a Hemi Motor.
Where do you get those big electronic sirens? It would be AWESOME to have one!! :D
Oh BTW if you remove the three screws holding the outer cone to the voice coil you will see the first diverging cone. you removed the voice coil to magnet screws.
Now I know from where Sheldon's ( Big Bang Theory ) Flag series has origionated from
At 11:47 she tried to do pulsed steady on a single toned siren
When the 5 y old at Walmart doesn’t get the Elmo plush 11:15
Yeah, mechanical sirens are WAY cooler than electronic ones! In fact, one of mine is that same or very similar model as yours!
