- At Newcastle’s Telewest Arena in March 1996, WBC World Super Middleweight Champion, Britain’s Nigel Benn defended his crown against South Africa’s Thulani ‘Sugar Boy’ Malinga.
It was a rematch from their close contest from 1994 in which Benn prevailed on points.

Watching the video after all these years still seems like it was just the other day,,, winning the world at the age when almost no one gave him a chance makes me respect "Sugar Boy" for his patience and resilience,,, thank God I was one of the few who believed in him, and even mentioning to him Joe Walcott who won a world title at thirty seven.
Underrated champion. He's a good fighter. I believe he beat Robin Reid years later who was also good. He's a nice boxer
Even more impressive considering he was 40 years old. Few fighters have won a world title at that age
do you mean Jersey Joe Walcott by any chance, who was the oldest man to win a tital around 37 38, for yonks until big George F took that tital as well
I was there, was a marvelous battle..
Me too. Great night.
WBC is the most prestigious boxing title and hard to win. It'a a memorable victory for the people of Africa.
Was always a huge Nigel Benn fan but what a story for Malinga. 36 years old, 9 defeats on his record, 4th attempt at a world title up against 8-1 on favourite Benn and this time he gets the win.
Sugar Boy Malinga was smooth. He was perhaps one of the most technically sound fighters that came outside of South Africa.
I can't believe Chuck Giampa scored it for Benn.
Shuga boy malinga ....history made ❤street mate
I know Sugar Boy. A true gentleman.
How could anyone hear anything with all those jet engines flying past?
By this time nige had been in the ring with da man, robbie Simms, eubank x2, watson etc what do you expect? What a true warrior and what aa true champion, he will always be my favourite fighter, you know why, coz benn wasnt an out and out boxer, he loved as he would call it a good old year up!!!😅 old school fighter, unorthodox yes, but sheer power and determination yes , eubank better boxer yes , watson yes but benn ranks with da elite! East, east, east, london by da way big up to once and liverpool! Ynwa(I was born there but have lived in east london since age5) 1 love peeps, p.s ❤u nigel big up!😊😊
