Holy crap. You literally listed just my 3 favorite male animated animals. I was *so close* to mentioning Simba and Spirit in my comment. Great minds think alike. I would love to see a fan-made video or read a fanfic with the 3 of those characters.
Twenty years later and this scene still gives me chills. My take away on this isn't so much finding who you truly are but finding the inner strength you need to never stop fighting for those you care about. Such a beautiful scene
Balto always knew what he was but was made to feel ashamed about it. My take is about self acceptance and embracing your difference From that one can find inner strength...
Whenever I’m struggling mentally or emotionally I remember the words: “A dog can’t survive this, but a wolf can…” it helps me to dig deep and find inner strength.
I like to use this sentence “A dog can not make this journey alone, but maybe a wolf can” for my own life: If I keep on being someone I’m not, behaving, talking and living like someone that’s not me, I won’t make it. But if I’m truly myself with all my flaws and strengths and the honesty and love it needs, I will take this life and make it my own again.
One of the messages I believe this scene teaches is that you have to face and accept what you truly are. Only then, when you've stopped running and hiding from it, can you find the real power inside of you.
Coyotalia the story is very simular to a movie named ‘khumba’, not a popular movie, but very good! Its about a zebra who has troubles finding himself. Also the music is very nice. You should check it out, its free on yt
I became an artist because of Balto - I was known during elementary for doing beautiful aurora paintings, being able to draw a wolf skeleton by memory, and draw Balto by memory too. I became a writer because of Balto - my stories being jump started by fanfiction. I became a wolf activist because of Balto - learning of the cruelty humans did to the wolf throughout history, driving them to the point of extinction, all because they wanted to make an extra buck. I became a singer/voice actor because of Balto - I wanted to make the perfect wolf howl. Balto changed me great and small, it was this movie, this scene which put me on this path.
so when I was little and I was watching Dumbo I fell in love with the scene where his mum gives him a bath, and according to my father I pointer the finger and said "I want to do that"... I maybe didn't know but animation became my obsession. I love it. fast-forward to my university (of animation) and the professor introduce us to storytelling by showing the pencil test of that scene. my brain just went to the star, it felt like destiny XD it may be stupid but it's a very important memory to me.
People say tv has no impact on kids. I find that so hard to believe. Balto and spirit was the only movies i had as a kid and i watched them probably a million times. I know they had some impact on my development. Espically balto. You can be given wealth, talent, accessories and ease but you cant be given a righteous heart with an unbreakable spirit that comes from building character through adversity. Luckily, that is all you need in this world to succeed. Im living proof. The "carhartt" kid who never had any shirts but his brothers too big and faded carhartts.
I like to think that this is like the scene from The Lion King where Simba sees his father in the clouds. In both scenes, the character is actually looking at an unacknowledged side of himself, represented by another character. That's why the white wolf gives Balto the cold shoulder at first. She's willing to ignore him because he's willing to ignore her, and she only comes back after he acknowledges and accepts his inner wolf.
HyaenusDominae Wow, I never thought or noticed it like that. But you are so right! Thank you for pointing that out. By the way, you have a really nice way with words.
Honestly, I feel like this scene is much more powerful than the scene in The Lion King. The key difference between the two is that words were not shared between Balto and the white wolf, they didn't need to be. Not only that, but did you notice that after this scene, Balto barely speaks the rest of the movie?
This scene is burned into my childhood forever. Instant chills when balto summons his strength and answers the call of the wild, embracing his inner wolf
The White wolf scared me as a kid - that creature looks more spiritual than animal so congratulations animators you did your job! I'm an awe of her animation. Very majestic and very mysterious. The white wolf looks more ghostly than natural.
Alexis Pruitt I agree. This scene is so beautiful even to this day. I still havent seen a wolf that even looks as cool as they way they designed Baltos mother. Very beautiful scene.
Natascha struywaix Um first off I'm 20, how old ARE you? Because last I checked there is a difference between 'ar' and are. 'Ar' is not even a word. So which would you prefer to be labeled ignorant or stupid? Because Miss Lily isn't stupid. -_-
Michaela Hanson if you do know, how come you said otherwise on your first comment? By any chance did you happen to see the second movie? He mentions to his Daughter Aleu that his mom is pure white as snow and she represents the spiritual symbol for wolf on the totem poles. Her name is beautiful.
It's 2am and I'm sitting here crying. I'm so glad I had a childhood with movies like this. The magnificence of this scene is just as it was then and with the unforgettable power of James Horners' score. "Thank you, Balto. I would have been lost without you."
Well said, it's this moment when said moral applies right when Balto realizes no matter how hard he tries to fight it, wolf is part of his heritage and he should embrace that and use that to his advantage and in the end he saves those kids' lives and the town
I love the subtly of this scene. You can view this moment in different ways. The White Wolf could be the spirit of his mother or a manifestation of his inner self that he refuses to accept. Or a form of both? I’m not sure if the sequels ever reveal the answer (as I’ve long since forgotten them) but I like not knowing. It’s an art that has been forgotten in Hollywood.
I think it’s both. He spends time being ashamed of being part wolf and somewhat hiding it. It’s until this scene that the spirit of his inner wolf comes to see him and show him what he has left inside, Balto still refuses. Then Balto places his paw over the wolfs print and realizing it’s identical to his, he embraces his inner wolf and howls along with his ancestor now next to him againbecause it never really left.
It at first was not suppose to be his mother but when they made the second they designed his mother off of this scene so it sorta goes both ways I'd say it mine as well be his mom
Oh, my gosh!!! I came to this video to comment something like that, but was shy. Then I read this. As a brown-white boy in a 100% white family, I was always insecure, and this scene really resonates with me. Almost more as an adult.
Such a powerful scene! Perfect combination of emotional orchestra and stunning animation. I come here quite often to rewatch this beautiful piece of art
This scene is so powerful I only have to think about it to get chills. Insanely good visual storytelling and wonderful music. The combination is electric. :)
It's sad that they don't create this kind of cartoons for kids anymore nowadays. Idk but I find this scene as motivation. Balto was done at this moment, he was at lowest, but he got up, believed in himself and climbed that mountain. Same with our lives, there are a lot of time when life hit us, when we are down, but start climbing because that's the difference between loser and winner. I come here every once in a while just to charge my energy here and move on with my life.
UnknownOne I don't know why, but this whole damn scene gives me chills. This is by far the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. The only part of the movie I probably don't like is the only parts that subtract from everything. This being the non animated grandma and child scenes.
The white wolf was asked to Simon Well the director of Balto (the first one not the sequels) and Simon's reply: "Whether the White Wolf is Balto's father or some kind of ephemeral Spirit of the Wolf is deliberately unstated. The White Wolf Sequence is still my favorite part of the movie, and James Horner's extraordinary score that accompanies it still raises the hairs on the back of my neck. We wanted to keep it mystical and vague - is this a real event or is it some kind of hallucination that Balto is experiencing? All of these were reasons to not have the White Wolf speak or in any way explain himself. Perhaps the Wolf is a manifestation of Balto's inner voice, telling him to take ownership and use that part of him that he has always been ashamed of - certainly that is the message Balto takes from the encounter, real or not. (And by the way, if it was really his dad why didn't the old man help him drag the antitoxin up the cliff?)"
If anyone is wondering why this scene moves you more than similar scenes in Lion King, Mulan, etc; it's because Balto is only able to overcome his struggle to embrace his identity AFTER seeing the fallen medicine. Up until this moment, his failed attempts to reconcile his identity (e.g. join the sled dog team) were an internal struggle separate from his desire to help the children. This is his breakthrough moment, pushed to the point where he cannot save the children by passing as a dog. His higher motive to save the children propels him past his insecurities, allowing him to "make this journey alone" as only a wolf can. This hits home because it parallels how humans actually overcome problems and grow, by finding inner strength to support others. Lion king has helping others (the pride) as a backdrop to Simba's return, but it's weaker because his problem is overcoming shame, which is unrelated to whether he is able to save the pride. In fact, Simba doesn't even choose to confront his shame, only "confessing" after Scar exposes him. Contrast that to Balto, where accepting his identity is essential to save the children.
Something I realized in watching this scene as an adult, Balto had let his pride go to his head and thinking he could finally show up Steele. After the fall to the bottom and realizing his potential could he or any of us can find true strength in lifting up others
This inspired me alot as a kid.... i wanted to be like balto mom... and show others who struggle like balto did... to see that light from themselves awaken.
I love this movie so damn much because it's so emotional! Especially this scene! Seeing Balto give up, thinking he's failed Rosy. It makes me burst into tears every time! And then seeing him embrace his wolf side fills me with joy!
One of my childhood films! Ever since my father passed away 6 years ago, I’ve always used this scene as a way of motivating myself to rise back up from the ashes and not give up on life no matter how tough it has been for me 🙏
I was stumbling across the internet looking for animated movies to watch, and I came across a gif of a wolf gathering the strengh to howl in what appears to be a terrible blizzard. I had to find this movie. I finally realized it was Balto (i've never seen the movie, but I've had seen the second one when I was very small). I must say this is by far the best part of the movie. I was seriously stunned by how majestic the white wolf was, and I loved how Balto finally accepted his part-wolf side. What a great scene of animation!
This is the best part about balto, him realizing who he really is and realized that being a wolf is not bad at all and he could make this journey back, "everytime I see this scene, for some reason I get the chills down my neck" ❤Balto best movie ever🐺❤
Every time I feel like giving up like Balto almost did Boris' words inspire me to keep moving forward and accept who I am. Also just like Balto, I thought I was an outsider myself because I have Asperger's syndrome and I often was the one who thought to fight back and at times it would backfire on me. Just watching this, I accept who I am fully more than ever I can do anything I set my mind to. No matter what others think of me.
there are a lot of animated movies that are underrated cause they are not from disney. my all time favorite is iron giant. like they don't even make movies like this anymore...
I agree with Jacob Balto is still alive but you know the singer for reach for the light had passed away in 2015 so I'm not so sure if Balto 4 aka last sequal is coming in 2019
I had a very faint memory of watching this film, long ago. It was my grandmother who showed me it. Ive been searching for it ever since she died, and today I found it.
Best scene in the film, gives me goosebumps every time Balto howls, and so does the bit when he remembers what Boris said. I am suprised so little amount of people I know know about him and his legend.
The white wolf is actually Balto's mom. I think I know why because they have the same sized feet. Also remember that scene when Balto said "the big paws come from family well one side. Idk it went something like that. Lol
Actually from what I've read people are still debating whether or not in this movie if it is his mother due to her character design in the second film.
Kaelynn Cubas It might be better to say that the White Wolf represents Balto's inner spirit. the side of him he always rejected. But now, it's the the key to saving Rosie and the rest of the children of Nome. It's here that he embraces both sides of his heritage.
One thing that stood out to me greatly from this film as a kid, and still today, James Horner's score! As a kid I had no clue who James Horner was, but absolutely loved the score (Or as I called it as a kid, background music) in this film.
Yeah, I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out with no context for the scene since I haven't seen the film in 20 years and chock it up to the amazing score. No wonder I'm sobbing-it's James Horner.
I usually never cry at movies, but this scene brought me closer to just that than anything else! It's so emotional! The moment the telegraph operator turned off the lantern, followed by all the lights in Nome going out was just so sad. Symbolizing that everyone in town had lost hope. Then when Jenna walked up onto the hill with the broken bottles and lantern, and put up the fake aurora, followed by when she turned around and whispered "Balto", the look on her face said it all. It made it even more emotionally heavy. She knew that they were running out of time. She was the last one who had even a sliver of hope left, and now it was starting to fade. Though I was kinda expecting her to whisper "Balto...please hurry!" This movie is totally worthy of being my favorite Disney Film! (AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING: YES!!! I know Balto isn't actually Disney! But I like to, in some way, consider it a part of the Disney family.)
I really loved the Balto movies! Thank you so much for uploading one of my most favorite scenes! It ties with Balto returning with the medicine and getting the love and acceptance he deserves!
This scene is so iconic it means to stop running away from who u are and embrace it at least that's my take on it, in the sequel its revealed that the white Wolf is his mother's spirit
@@kiaracoston2604 Nope, original artists confirm the wolf is supposed to be either not there, and is a spiritual representation of Balto's inner wolf or his father. They intentionally did not say which it was when interviewed, leaving it up for the viewer to interpret. ... The art makes it clear, the wolf is to be seen as male by the audience, and the other clues point to the wolf, in fact, being a spiritual representation over a physical wolf. ... It was canon that Balto's father was the wolf until lazy writers washed that.. for some reason thinking because they went with Balto's daughter, it would have to be her grandmother she felt a connection too rather than her grandfather. ... Sorry but lazy narrow minded writers for future straight to home cash grabs don't change the original.
@@saribeepo.o5111 Well yeah usually I would agree with you since I'm all for the artist's intention, but in this case it was never stated in the first movie, so it being established as his mother in the second movie is actually canon now. And I don't have an issue with it per say since it could go either way. The question is, does it really matter if the wolf is male or female? I don't think it does personally. It still carries the same feeling and message.
On December 23rd I was riding my longboard while looking at Christmas lights, and listened to Heritage Of The Wolf from the Balto soundtrack. I got to the top of a hill as the song hit the crescendo and was surrounded by magnificent lights, it was truly magical, and I felt powerful. This movie and music is special. There are only a few movies that have brought a tear to my eye, Balto is one of them.
Now when I think about it, this scene seems to have some deeper meaning, don't you think? The moment Balto starts howling with this white wolf, he finally accepts who he really is and is no longer ashamed of it.
The cartoonists and animators are really good at the cartoon wolves!(And yes,I refer to Balto as a wolf, not a dog). Especially Aniu! I love how detailed and unique the white wolf is.
This is one of the greatest parts of the film. Balto finally realizes that his wolf heritage is strength. Never be ashamed of who you are. God made you special and he loves you vary much.
I get goosebumps every time. This movie is so underrated and deserves far more appreciation. This is such an awe-inspiring scene with *incredible* music. One of the best parts of my childhood. Thanks for making this!
Maybe the only scene in animation movie that still gives me so much chills when I watch it. That movie was so amazing that I'm sad to see that no one knows it around me ... Thank you James Horner for this awesome soundtrack ! And the white wolf is Balto's spirit I think ... you can see it in the second movie and it's all about spiritual guide ^^
I feel the same way. I always felt it was much more poignant with it just being a random wolf that recognizes Balto as one of it's kind, and the way it leans in towards Balto as if to say "why are you cowering in the snow? We're made for this."
One of my favorite scenes in all of film history and I’m not joking. The Animation, The Music, and just the facial expressions just make this scene amazing.
I saw this movie when I was maybe 7 or 8. I am now 28 and still come back to this movie every so often, especially cause of this scene. I have always been in touch with nature, especially wolves & dogs but animals in general. This movie was always one of my favorites. The realization that instinct, natural bred nature, keeps us alive and surviving. Even if it makes us the weird, outcast-ed, different ones.

Twenty years later and this scene still gives me chills. My take away on this isn't so much finding who you truly are but finding the inner strength you need to never stop fighting for those you care about. Such a beautiful scene
Balto always knew what he was but was made to feel ashamed about it. My take is about self acceptance and embracing your difference
From that one can find inner strength...
Whenever I’m struggling mentally or emotionally I remember the words: “A dog can’t survive this, but a wolf can…” it helps me to dig deep and find inner strength.

Balto is the best
I like to use this sentence “A dog can not make this journey alone, but maybe a wolf can” for my own life: If I keep on being someone I’m not, behaving, talking and living like someone that’s not me, I won’t make it. But if I’m truly myself with all my flaws and strengths and the honesty and love it needs, I will take this life and make it my own again.
💯💯 Truth!!!! 🤍❤️

Well said!
Damn very true. Be your true self. Only way to be free
Just like my autistic mind
I’ve tried to hide it but I have learned to accept it because it makes me unique
For real.
There is no inner power in my identity

That moment when destiny calls you and you answer.
Call of the wild.
You should watch the call of the wild
Yes call of the wild is great! I just watched it a few days ago- great movie.
Balto changed me great and small, it was this movie, this scene which put me on this path.
its amazing to witness the power of art
You my friend have earned my respect and then some. Get out there and show them what you can do!
so when I was little and I was watching Dumbo I fell in love with the scene where his mum gives him a bath, and according to my father I pointer the finger and said "I want to do that"... I maybe didn't know but animation became my obsession. I love it.
fast-forward to my university (of animation) and the professor introduce us to storytelling by showing the pencil test of that scene.

I do too. To me the white wolf is very symbolic of God and it moves me to tears.

I get so emotional too sniff
AmericanDash No, i do too. I'm literally crying right now.
i just bawl every time
I like to think that this is like the scene from The Lion King where Simba sees his father in the clouds.
Thank you very much, but eloquence is simply a matter of practice.
HyaenusDominae Aniu is so proud of her boy for everything he has done. Awwwwww
Honestly, I feel like this scene is much more powerful than the scene in The Lion King.
The key difference between the two is that words were not shared between Balto and the white wolf, they didn't need to be. Not only that, but did you notice that after this scene, Balto barely speaks the rest of the movie?
The white wolf is Baltos mother though..
The White Wolf said so much to Balto without a single word. This animation is pure gold man.
The white wolf was his wolf side as he finally accepted his wolf blood.
How old ar u?
Natascha struywaix "Are"
Alexis Pruitt I agree. This scene is so beautiful even to this day. I still havent seen a wolf that even looks as cool as they way they designed Baltos mother. Very beautiful scene.
Miss Lily Ar or are no different stupid
Natascha struywaix Um first off I'm 20, how old ARE you? Because last I checked there is a difference between 'ar' and are. 'Ar' is not even a word. So which would you prefer to be labeled ignorant or stupid? Because Miss Lily isn't stupid. -_-
His mom is so big and beautiful
+Michaela Hanson Actually, it is. His mother is a white wolf, as said on Wikipedia.
+Alicia Morris Most badass and beautiful mommy ever (i found^^)
Michaela Hanson if you do know, how come you said otherwise on your first comment? By any chance did you happen to see the second movie? He mentions to his Daughter Aleu that his mom is pure white as snow and she represents the spiritual symbol for wolf on the totem poles.
Her name is beautiful.
So big so powerful and beautiful
They confirm that that wolf is his mother in Balto 2. Believe it or not, she is a spirit.
It's 2am and I'm sitting here crying. I'm so glad I had a childhood with movies like this. The magnificence of this scene is just as it was then and with the unforgettable power of James Horners' score.
"Thank you, Balto. I would have been lost without you."
I hope I'm not being hyperbolic here, but this is one of the greatest scenes in animation.
Most powerful scene in this movie ever.
Alyssa McIntosh ehh, I don’t know about that but it is great
Never try to blend in with everybody else; you should embrace your differences and use them to your advantage. Such a powerful moral. :'3
Remember who you are,
You are my son and the one true king,
Remember who you are,
Remember
Love Simba Yeah we should all embrace our inner self because it's a strength not a weakness no matter how much we think it is.
Well said, it's this moment when said moral applies right when Balto realizes no matter how hard he tries to fight it, wolf is part of his heritage and he should embrace that and use that to his advantage and in the end he saves those kids' lives and the town
@@stephenjacob4782
Balto thinking he was useless is pretty sad too
I love the subtly of this scene.
Apparently his mom was a husky sled dog
I think it’s both. He spends time being ashamed of being part wolf and somewhat hiding it. It’s until this scene that the spirit of his inner wolf comes to see him and show him what he has left inside, Balto still refuses. Then Balto places his paw over the wolfs print and realizing it’s identical to his, he embraces his inner wolf and howls along with his ancestor now next to him againbecause it never really left.
It at first was not suppose to be his mother but when they made the second they designed his mother off of this scene so it sorta goes both ways I'd say it mine as well be his mom

Confidence and courage, everyone got a inner Balto, you just got to let him howl

There is something truly powerful about a wolf's howl. It's the most haunting yet beautiful & mystical sound to be ever heard (in my opinion).
UnknownOne I don't know why, but this whole damn scene gives me chills. This is by far the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. The only part of the movie I probably don't like is the only parts that subtract from everything. This being the non animated grandma and child scenes.
UnknownOne Like the roar of the lion
@@foresthillwolf7998 Dude, I hated those too. I actually skip those parts because I don't like the fact they're part of the movie.
The white wolf was asked to Simon Well the director of Balto (the first one not the sequels) and Simon's reply:
"Whether the White Wolf is Balto's father or some kind of ephemeral Spirit of the Wolf is deliberately unstated.
@Lee Brown nah, it's just you.
Something I realized in watching this scene as an adult, Balto had let his pride go to his head and thinking he could finally show up Steele. After the fall to the bottom and realizing his potential could he or any of us can find true strength in lifting up others
@Lee Brown Nah, I feel the same way as OP.
This inspired me alot as a kid.... i wanted to be like balto mom... and show others who struggle like balto did... to see that light from themselves awaken.

Even as a kid this scene gave me Hope. I just knew that was his mother. She gave the courage to look deep inside himself!! To finish the journey!!

I think it is Balto's mom. In the second movie, Balto sees a wolf exactly like that and says it's his mother or something like that.
The guy who mad Balto actually said that the white wolf is baltos mom
This is a throwback to the days when we were taught to embrace who we are, not pretend to be what we are not.
exactly, don't pretend to be what you aren't because society wants you to be ("trans" and "nonbinary" people for example)

And at that moment a million wolfies were born...
This song and scene mesmerized me as a child. I would sit in the piano and play the melody all the time.
2:24,
That's my profile picture.😄
Very cool
Though I was kinda expecting her to whisper "Balto...please hurry!"
This movie is totally worthy of being my favorite Disney Film! (AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING: YES!!! I know Balto isn't actually Disney! But I like to, in some way, consider it a part of the Disney family.)
That first howl from the wolf goes along with the music so perfectly like it was meant to be in the track. Man I love it
I got to admit, this scene really shows what a person really is from their heart, and the white wolf showed Balto what he truly was.
I really loved the Balto movies! Thank you so much for uploading one of my most favorite scenes! It ties with Balto returning with the medicine and getting the love and acceptance he deserves!

Well yeah usually I would agree with you since I'm all for the artist's intention, but in this case it was never stated in the first movie, so it being established as his mother in the second movie is actually canon now.
