The cool thing about leafcutter ants is that they don't eat the leaves. They mulch them up and use them as a base for fungi to grow on. The fungi is the main source of food, which makes them farmers!
Someone's probably already commented it, but leafcutter ants bring the leaves back, not to eat, but to feed to their domesticated grubs so they'll get nice and fat to eat later. They're literally the cattle farmers of the bug world.
Leafcutter ants give the leaves as food for a fungus (scientists have descovered that the fungus comunicates what nutrients it wants to the ants. And the plants that the ants cut from starts to produce toxins to kill the fungus, so the ants have to cut the freshest leaves from new plants). Other ants «farm» aphids and protects them from predators and «milks» the aphids by stoking them with their antennas so they squirt out drops of honeydew.
I'll have you know when Jacob asked "Teru Teru vash the stampede?" I grabbed mine off his shelf from next to my moniter by the throat and showed him to the screen.
As a person with deep bug knowledge this video was both so entertaining and incredibly infuriating Jacob: what are they even doing with those leaves Me: AGRICULTURE
Huh, so when they said "like a human" I took that to mean "they're one of very few animals who do agriculture, like humans" but going back, yeah maybe they meant "these idiots pick up random shit on a hike and take it home for no good reason, like a human."
I was thinking a while ago with the amount of times they say "he's just a little guy" that they should eventually get to a full episode of drawing little guys. Glad to see they thought the same.
