That’s the best take on a capsule wardrobe I’ve ever seen. Usually they are SO boring - full of neutrals and plain colours. Yours is lovely. Our wardrobes definitely need to reflect our personality, and following your advice, I think that anyone will be able to build a wardrobe they’ll be happy with, and in any season. I would also love to see something on using other colours as “neutrals” if that works for you. Bottle green is a neutral for me, for example. And I met a redhead at a yarn show who said that teal was her go-to neutral.
I can totally relate. 80-90% Neutrals won't work for me, I love colour and printed blouses specifically. Thanks for your practical advise. I always enjoy your style tips and how you put outfits together.
Absolutely agree! I also love colours and prints, and I am fed up with all the recommendations of neutral capsule wardrobes. I think your advicenis really sound! Thank you!
I’m a print lover and always appreciate you! You are so enjoyable and helpful. I want my wardrobe to reflect me thanks for your help and encouragement.
Love the new thumbnail Maria. I always respect your advice Maria. You absolutely do want to inject your personality into your wardrobe. I look back at my colour dossier you did for me to just remind myself of the variety of the colours I can wear. Xx
Another lovely video. I also love colour, but I'm tending to keep prints for scarves, because I'm petite and there is less choice. Today I wore daisy patterned tights for the first time in years, which is a bit idiosyncratic but I got lots of compliments.
I love adding print and color to my outfits in silk scarves, too. They also add elegance and femininity. I need them anyway, to protect my sensitive neck skin from all that wool and cashmere.🙂
I too am petite and have problems buying clothes that fit. All too often the only items in the petite range are black - e.g Marks &Spencer trousers - or colours which don’t go with the rest of my clothes. I have taken to making some of my clothes as I prefer this to making lots of alterations to things I buy.
This was so inspiring and informative!! Thank you! So many capsule wardrobes are just plain neutrals and I'm a vibrant color gal. ;) Your breakdown of incorporating basic neutrals helps so much.
Brilliant! I wore my spring capsule of creams, blues and light grey on a recent spring break and it was SO BORING. Now I know why!!😊 I'm going to dig out my floral prints and add them into the mix.
Hi Maria, I'm new to your channel, how refreshing to find someone who isn't in the ,boring colour capsule, nice to see colour, love navy ,thank you for the help ,I can see lots of ways I can put outfits together, with colour, definitely subscribing😍
Loved this video so much, it really made sense. My problem is organising my wardrobe. I am constantly changing it around, I just can't get it right 🤦🏼♀️
Glad it was helpful! My best advice for organising is either by item and the colour within that or hanging by colour do you have all of the same colour together
I do something similar. I create "modules" of complimentary printed pieces. For example, from your closet, I would group the bright blue trousers, plum top and skirt, pink bottoms, blue printed blouse, and dark printed piece that has plum-pink-cream. Then I'd get all the cream pieces together, and all the navy pieces together. Just from those, I could make 2 dozen combinations. I would then gather all the pieces that I'd prefer to wear with "black and cream" instead: the mossy green, Breton black, Breton red, animal print, etc. and pull some blazers, sweaters, skirts, and trousers in black. Along the rod, I'd hang (from L to R) the printed plum-pink-Tiffany blue pieces, then the navy neutrals that go with them, next the cream pieces (because they go with both modules), followed by the printed pieces that I selected to go with black, and finally, all the solid black pieces. That way my eyes can see the combination possibilities more easily.
What a breath of fresh air. Wonderful video full of great advice. Yes, we do need those neutrals but for me colour is essential and for that I use the colour guide you made for me a few years ago.
Just found your video and wow it all makes sense after years of struggling with bland one colour advice. I’m off to go and sort out my wardrobe thanks 👍😁
Yes! Someone who also hates those boring capsule wardrobes of pale neutrals. I've already bought a bunch of cream pieces and shoes for spring. For years I've avoided black but last fall i added several black pieces to go with my prints and wow! that really multipled my options. I think it's also important not to buy too many pieces that are too similar in shape or color. I mean, how many pairs of Capri pants do you really need? Mix it up with different lengths or styles of bottoms or tops to give yourself variety! ❤
I so agree about the typical social media capsule wardrobe, they’re so drab and boring! Most are even worse than your example you made here, because they’re full of black and gray. I love pattern and color, too, they just need to be balanced with some neutral solid items. Plus, I don’t really wear the items in those capsules: jeans, plain t-shirts, black trousers, blazers and moto jackets, sneakers, etc. I prefer dresses and skirt/soft trouser outfits in soft fabrics and colors, and good leather, mid-heel shoes.
Hi Maria. I am a real neutral lover but this has inspired me to be a bit more adventurous. I really loved the capsule wardrobe from the Lounge as it helped to identify pieces that I have and where there are gaps I was also wondering if u could do something about makeup colours sometime. I remember u did that a long time ago Looking forward to the Style Lounge chat on Monday Margo
That is a really good idea. As our colours change it’s hard not to get confused with what suits young girls on makeup counters don’t always have the right answer.
I love many prints and patterns, too. Most of my fellow Americans think, for some unknown reason, that’s it’s somehow virtuous to not have any! I think the problem they might have had with prints is the one you address here, not having enough solid-color and neutral pieces to wear them with. I do have a lot of these which makes prints work well in my wardrobe.
Oh my goodness, I'm the Queen of prints. I like to believe that you walked into my 4 closets (yes 4, because I'm a horder) and took a long good look and decided to make this video to help me understand why I have nothing to wear. I have enough tops, pants, skirts and dresses, hats, scarves, handbags and shoes/boots, jackets, blazers and colourful socks to clothe an army and yet I have NOTHING to wear because I have no neutrals other than a few black pants and skirts. I didn't realize that 1) neutrals would help me create a head-to-toe look and 2) neutral doesn't hve to be cream, beige, grey or white, neutral could be a solid colour like pink. By the way, I was watching spring capsule wardrobe videos and thinking to myself how awfully boring they are and everyone looks the same without any personality. It feels as if everyone is copying one person's idea of what spring capsule wardrobe should be and boom a uniform is created for the rest of us. Well, I love prints and won't succumb to that neutral, colourless, lifeless, boring palette everyone is gushing over. Thanks to your video and explanation, I can finally put a capsule wardrobe together that is uniquely mine and showcases my personality. Big THANK YOU for that. I'm definitley subscribing to your channel and can't wait to see the videos on your channel. God bless and keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for your lovely comment 😊 you might find that you only need a few items that will make a lot of your prints and colours work. Look for any common colours within the prints to see where you can overlap 👍
I think some florals and patterns are aging and remind me of curtains, however neutrals are more youthful . I’m not against patterns but I prefer stripes and geometric designs. You look nice in that olive sweater.
Hmmm. Good ideas but I’m disappointed to learn that my wardrobe is boring, lacks personality, and is a mistake because I have a lot of neutrals. While you do state that it’s fine to wear neutrals if you like them, the message is framed in a very negative way.
You are old...it's not for everybody ..that's what I love about Maria...I actually started buying clothes with prints after watching her videos a few years ago..I'm 58 years old

Great presentation without pushing a particular brand and suggesting purchasing only a few pieces vs a whole new wardrobe.
Finally someone that is not recommending those boring neutrals 😊 thank you!!!
I love colour ❤️ we need some neutrals but not a whole wardrobe of them 👍
Absolutely spot on, Maria - thank you for speaking up about this A really great video, so helpful and inspiring with lots of truly useful advice.
At last! An interesting capsule wardrobe. I agree neutrals are needed as base pieces but it’s nice to lift them with some colour. 👍
I totally agree!
I can totally relate. 80-90% Neutrals won't work for me, I love colour and printed blouses specifically. Thanks for your practical advise. I always enjoy your style tips and how you put outfits together.
