- Everyone considers FRIENDSHIP a good thing, but because modern Western society is so individualistic, we don't want to admit that we also NEED friends in order to be happy. Pre-modern cultures had a different way of thinking about friendship: for them, friendship was a NECESSITY. One of the most sophisticated articulations of the ancient view of friendship comes from Aristotle who, in his ethical writings, turned friendship into a science.

This is when society has normalized the friendship-happening but based on common goals as icebreakers.
One way to describe such a maybe somewhat cynical version of friendship is "familiar proximity". I.e. if things don't push us into interaction with other people, then there is little activity driven by the interest in friendship. - Friendship as a devotional practice for the concept is rare. (And I don't mean the BS version practiced by networkers.)
6:34 recently read that Montaigne quote. He was a fantastic essayist. In that passage, I believe he was referring to his best friend Ettien de la Boetie, who wrote the fantastic piece "Discourse on Voluntary Servitude" which I think should be required reading in all High Schools.

Kinda parody-ish in the context of the essay about social media - where you see a controlled, highly filtered image - what the person allows to be seen. And you didn't even have an internet-based conversation with him because TH-cam comment sections are extremely asymmetrical communication, less so with other commenters, which is something we could meditate on. Who is the lonely one in that situation?
"Podcasts are friendship simulations"
That makes so much sense. I have no problem making friends and have a pretty fulfilling social life and I find the inane ramblings on 6 or 8 hour podcasts or streams to be infuriating. I prefer a structured presentation or a lecture like this.
I never made that connection before. It's like a friend group for people who are isolated.
The normie podcasts, yeah. A chill discussion over some pints of beers. What I want to hear is the history of philosophy, Roman Empire or some obscure philosophical theory used to analyze a work of art. Highly specific topics, more like university lectures
This brings back some memories. One of the few things I clearly remember from my early classes at school is the moment when our lovely senior teacher taught us this exact ancient view of friendship. It immediately became part of me and lead to the way I categorized people who always claimed to be close to me under those three types of friendship. The result naturally was that I had less friends from then on. But I also had to waste less time and effort on superficial relationships.

I have no choice. I tried countless times to have friends but cannot relate to others at all. either I don't like the company or they don't like mine. some combination of the two or just vastly different world views. I disagree that romantic partners evidently lead to disappointment. I know couples who are each other as best friends and spend all their time together homesteading and building a business and life together. I wish I had that more than I wish I had friends since that is much more rare and deeper connection.
