This should be the format for all lectures/teachings on TH-cam. Format:
    >Clear vídeo with minimal visual distractions.
    >Clear blackboard with themes.
    >Great info. delivered with great tone.
    >Just the facts, no opinion.
    >Fun facts make it extra interesting.

That’s because the wise don’t need the book in order to carry around the message. Once you understand it, the book itself is just a stack of paper with a cover.

The definition of happiness has changed so much over the years. Now we narrowly define it to mean ‘glad or smiley’ but what Aristotle said makes so much sense it’s much deeper than that 💕

If you weren't sure what he meant by "straightening wood," it is the practice of over bending the object past its center point, and leaving it to stay in that position for a time. When you release it, it will lean back the distance you overextended it, and be truly centered. Awesome video btw (:

Ok so the book talks about closing the gap between what you are capable of and where you are at. But is this ever really possible? I feel like as you start to close the gap, what you thought you where capable of changes and you realize you are capable of more. So in reality, isn’t the pursuit of what you think you are capable of, really the key to eudaemonia?

    • @HeroicBrian

Wow. What jerry seinfeld is to comedy this man is to philosophy. Jed.Purdy says seinf. signifies the age of irony, which is almost true: s.f. , in his ironic presentation, signifies a critique of the purdian irony long already in our midst upon us; His comedy implicitly declares purdy's postfacto point askew. And almost similarly this man is a eudaimonian cleanly administering a benificient lingual tincture of eudaimonism to us, the audience . . . in a refreshing, vital, visceral manner: thankyou for speaking on philosophy with such a unique and needed voice

Goddamn your veins. A papercut in the wrong spot could probably kill you.
lol all jokes aside this is a really great video. Aristotle is by far my favorite philosopher. If a person were to only read one book a year, this should be it. It's hilarious how we're always bombarded with books and media claiming to offer the secret to happiness when a bunch of bored dudes came up with the answer all the way back in antiquity.

Saying that depressiom and anxiety occur because you are not actualising your potential is wrong

    • @michael_fassbender
      @michael_fassbender 5 ปีที่แล้ว

its true for many, many people and can even be the root cause for a chemical imbalance if it occurs long enough

    • @Kim-jo8px

Correct. Depression is result of distorted thinking , nothing to do with potential.

Brian Johnson seems to be a philosophical version of Joel Osteen rendering Aristotle's ethics as a kind of "be your best self now." I like his enthusiasm, but he's a bit misleading. Eudaemonia is contemplation of the habits of ethical behavior (application of the Mean in all one's engagements with others in life). Thus, it is not mere self-satisfaction for having done the right thing, nor is the application the unbridled joy that Johnson implies (he does not say this directly). The happiness for Aristotle is a highly evolved intellectual/rational contemplation of the good as applied in one's life, and not an emotional or self-satisfaction. I teach philosophy.

You did a great job explaining this, but I pray the Lord gives you His mercy and grace so that you don't have to try to save yourself for man has fallen short of the glory of God and needs a redeemer, who can be found in Jesus Christ alone. Joy of the soul is found in reconciliation with God. God has offered us forgiveness for our transgressions, so His name is worthy to be praised forevermore. Amen.
