This latest episode was definitely great. Superman awakened, kidnapped again, only this time he's lost in space. As misguided as Kara is shown to be, deep down, she does want to bond with Clark. Despite not agreeing with each other, Clark and Kara are definitely bonding. I can't help but enjoy how Clark teases Kara when he realizes that she has a crush on his friend Jimmy. Of course, Kara gets him back by pretending that the helmet part of her suit is malfunctioning, only to reveal to Clark that super powered kryptonians can survive in the vacuum of space. It was nice seeing them play in space. Apparently, Clark is aware of the moments when he suddenly gets more powerful and how it's usually due to a moment when he needs to protect someone. Kara seems to show signs that such a phenomenon has never happened to her. When Clark and Kara arrive on Thanagar and see it destroyed, this is where we start to see the cracks in Brainiac's conditioning over Kara. Kara showed signs of not knowing what Brainiac had her do to the planets that are made a part of the new kryptonian empire. Brainiac, tired of waiting, sends his drones to get Kara and Superman back on course with his ship, which apparently is this show's version of Kandor. We are also made painfully aware that Kara has no knowledge of her biological father, Zor-El. Her adopted father is Primus Brainiac, and he's quite the villain in this episode. Around Kara, Brainiac acts like a father, but he shows more of his true personality around Clark when it's just them. Brainiac revealed to Kal-El that he knew both of his biological parents, Jor-El and Lara, using that knowledge to lure Clark in. It marks the first time Clark learned about his biological mother's name. Then, to test what Superman is capable of, he has his drones take on the form of a Green Lantern, Parademon, and a Thanagarian. After seeing Superman's great potential, Brainiac is convinced that he can use Superman's powers to restore the kryptonian empire, starting with the conquering of Earth. Naturally, Superman won't let Brainiac take over Earth or use him as his weapon, but Brainiac clearly is going to try to force Superman to his will. Despite Superman's best efforts, once Brainiac used a red sun energy field, it was easy for him to subdue our kryptonian hero. To make things worse, we start to see the full effects of Brainiac's conditioning over Kara. It's a combination of raising her, manipulating her, and even brainwashing her. However, her time with Jimmy and Clark influenced Kara to learn the truth of what Brainiac had her do, which seemed to set her up on a path to redemption. A small glimmer of hope is shown when a ship reaches Kara carrying Lois, Jimmy, Malah, and the brain. I can't wait to see an explanation of how they got into space in the next episode.

This is by far one of my favorite MAWS episodes. That being said, I find it odd that like the previous episode, some people seem to be fixated on the show's themes which isn't entirely a bad thing. But surely there are other reasons to enjoy the show, like the characters. Also, this show is serialized and each episode connects to tell a larger narrative. It's not like themes are exclusive to one episode.

i think when i'm trying to dissect the themes of this show/episodes, that doesn't mean i don't like the characters. i do like the characters and the themes being explored with them are great in each episodes. it's not like there is no themes in an episode, that the creators are exploring, because there are. there's an overarching theme of the season and themes being explored in the episode. i don't think it's a mutually exclusive idea that you have to like one over the others.

@@johnthai6188 that's fair. I just personally don't feel like we know too much yet about some of these things. Like the Kryptonian "Empire." Brainiac may not actually be trying to rebuild it, but using it to manipulate Kara into doing his bidding. He is a machine and has no real feelings, but he knows organic life forms like Kara do, so he obscures the truth. Sure, there is some colonialism involved, but I feel like we don't know enough to see where they are taking these ideas.

@@catotheyounger2689 at the very least there are ideas that each episode is trying to explore. i don't think it's a bad thing to point out those ideas within an episode. it seems like for you it's about the unanswered questions and for me it's about the ideas that the creatives are trying to explore within one episode at a time. we might not know all of the answered questions to these themes, in one episode, but each episode so far is trying to explore them. this week's episode is about social programming, following your heart = freedom, AI/algorithms are bad, and he cure to loneliness.

To be honest, I kind of wish there were a few minutes spent on Lois and Jimmy frantically looking for Clark because them appearing at the end with Mala and the Brain just came straight out of nowhere. Otherwise, though, this episode was very good, especially with the presentation of Brainiac. I like how he's a bit like New 52 Zor-El with a cybernetic body, stern fatherly control over Kara, and obsession with restoring Krypton by devastating other worlds. I also like how we get a bit of worldbuilding with Thanagarians, Green Lanterns, and Parademons (?) apparently being victims of the Votrulimite-I mean, Kryptonian Empire.

MAWS Season 2 Ep: 6 (Social Programing, Follow your Heart = Freedom, AI/algorithm, The Cure to Loneliness)
You have Lois and Jimmy following their heart, to free clark from his captors. Quite literally Lois and Jimmy are free from their personal drama on earth to be in space. In going to space, they found two other people that would help them, who had freed themselves by following their heart to leave earth. When Kara is following her heart, she can be free from her social programming. When kara is with clark, we see her true heart shine of what she actually wants. What she wants is to not feel alone in a universe without her people. That social programming is Brainiac's way of gaslighting; this is in the guise of wanting to preserve a culture. While in reality, Brainiac wants to oppress others for their culture. If they don’t comply, well you die. Then you have clark, who always follows his heart. The fact that he always follows what his heart tells him, the gaslighting from Brainiac and Kara’s can’t really get through to him. What does Clark's heart say, we should help people, we shouldn’t destroy other cultures and or rule it.
When it comes to social programming, it can be a good or bad thing. It’s all about who is directing it. The Kents are socially programing Clark about being a kind person: like love, family and what actually matters. His social programming didn’t make him weak, as kara would like to point out, it made him stronger. In the sense that he develops powers that she never had. On the other hand you have Kara’s social programming, which is quite the opposite. Her programming is about trying to “preserve one’s culture” through supremacy. It makes sense that Brainiac wants to preserve one’s culture because he’s a character that is always about maintaining cultures through this control. There's nothing wrong in wanting to preserve your culture from outside forces that would harm it, but it is wrong in being an extremist about it. The reason why Brainiac’s way of social programming is harmful, besides the obvious, is because he’s an unemotional robot that is an algorithm. If you look at this through the lens of social commentary, it’s about how our development shouldn’t all come from the internet. The reason being, the internet is controlled by algorithms that think it knows what you want. In reality those things don't - it’s the people around you like family and friends that do. If life is all run by an algorithm, then that algorithm can be manipulated for your eyes to see. It’s only when you are following your heart that you can look past the manipulation - like what kara does at the end of the episode.
This does parallel what Lex, Hank and Waller want. They want to preserve the earthling’s way of life, but are extremist in their views of it. Then you take that extra step in this comparison that both Lex’s crew and Brainiac want to socially program an entire culture to their way of “preserving” it. The results of what Lex’s crew is trying to do could lead to what Brainiac is doing. If you do not comply with our way of life, then you die because of it. If your way of preserving your culture is costing people their lives, then you need to rethink your strategies.
Near the end of the episode Kara get’s disillusioned with her upbringing. Seeing that it’s not all what it seems like; in that moment she felt alone in a vast universe. Since the universe is vast, anything can happen. What happens next? Next we see that Jimmy, Lois, Mallah and Brain come through a portal that happens to be next to Kara. It’s interesting that most of these characters have felt the emotional withdrawal of loneliness before. the way to fill that void is for everyone who has felt that same pain to come together.
When Kara is interacting with Clark, or with Jimmy in last week’s episode, we see what kara’s heart wants. She wants genuine connection to other people, because she never had that. Since clark always wants to follow his own heart, being an individual, Brainiac as a collective doesn’t like that. You either have to be all about your culture or not. Sad to say, this is the upbringing of many immigrants.
You also have the subtext that using AI is bad, because it will always go beyond our control. In a day and age that everything is being controlled by AI/algorithms, we can’t really do anything about it. Companies are still going to use it to progress their own means.

I have mix opinion about this version of Brainiac: On one hand I like how the show made him more creepy and robotic, with his lack of humanity being a nice contrast to Superman, the hero who represents the best of humanity.
But on other hand, part of me really wish the show had went with collector of cities take on him rather than the kriptonian A.I.
He being this lonely alien who kidnaps cities from others planets makes Brainiac a more unique antagonist than he being an evil A.I who wants to destroy worlds for reasons. Plus The fact Brainiac has all these bottle cities , on his ship, with it’s citizens still alive, and treats them like throphies, it’s very disturbing and highlights his selfishness and cruelty towards others, how Brainiac sees his prisoners as nothing more than microbes on slide, keeping them alive just so they can’t share any new knowloge with anyone but himself.

I was unsure about the idea of evil Kryptonians but this episode cleared that up. They weren't some evil warrior race like the Viltrumites, Krypton was still this scientific and cultured world.
But they were still an empire, and like pretty much every empire, it was built on war and conquest.

Well, while this version of Jimmy is prone to saying random cringey things at times, Kara has already messed things up with him by attacking and kidnapping his best friend after leading her straight to him, during a time when he was already guilt ridden over not being able to defend Superman’s character in public and being indirectly responsible for the rise of Lex Luthor, so…Yeah…Kara is the one who has to make things right with Jimmy at this point before things can be romantic between them again 😅

The thing is, someone had to make that tapestry on thanagar. There's a survivor or two on that planet, meaning there are likely survivors on other planets. I doubt Braniac would create that tapestry. Maybe Kara could have broken through before and left tapestries to try to tell herself she's in the wrong? I think the survivor theory makes rhe most sense

Question, why did Brainiac bother brainwashing Kara with mind control tactics? If he raised her from childhood, would it not have been simpler to teach her to share his own tyrannical values and view all non-Kryptonian life as inferior so she wouldn’t feel empathy for the people she conquered? Don’t get me wrong, I get that the writers obviously really wanted to saddle Kara with the emotional baggage of having wiped out entire civilizations while under the influence of Brainiac so they could pursue this dark storyline without making her an irredeemable villain, I’m just pointing out that mind control probably wouldn’t have been necessary in the first place if Brainiac had raised Kara to be a warmongering monster like himself from the start, which may not have been that far off from how Kryptonian children were raised in this setting considering how this show’s version of Krypton was an expansionist empire until it crossed paths with a bigger, badder enemy even they couldn’t handle with all their tech and superpowers. BTW, regarding the Green Lantern Clark fought, is he based off a character from the comics or is he just an original character created for the show? Regardless, a green lantern probably should have been a tougher opponent for Clark than either a parademon or a thanagarian (though all three opponents bad pretty cool, and thankfully recognizable character designs).

I really love this episode and I thought it was the best so far in the season. The second half of season 2 looks to be really great especially since I thought the first half of the season was a bit weak and inconsistent. Also I don't know if it was just me, but honestly I am a bit mixed on Brainiac's voice in the show. I think Michael Emerson is a great casting for Brainiac but I feel the cadence of his voice is a little too human sounding and I usually prefer Brainiac to sound more emotionless.

I was really disappointed with this episode, it felt too blatant of pig-tailing of invincible. Like the kryptonian empire isn’t really as bad as the voltrumites. It doesn’t commit to the tone. Also did the empire conquered apokolypes? I was kinda cringing of of the VA of Braniac, it felt super off. Idk. It felt like we’re moving too fast, like maybe should’ve had become a 2 parter.

i feel like we don't know much about the full history of krypton yet and the writers are deliberately holding onto that until near the end of the season. probably we are going to get the full history maybe in episode 9 or 10 of this season.

That's always been a problem with the show: the pacing. Lois learns Superman's identity mid-season, Metropolis turns on him at the end of the first season which gets resolved quickly, and the Myxysptlk episode felt like it belonged in Season 3. Maybe it's the twenty minute runtime and ten episode limit hampering its potential.

    • @CapedJoel
      @CapedJoel  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

A thing you gotta remember about Superman is the comics have been around for 80+ years at this point. Meaning they did basically everything in the superhero genre first and often multiple times. Sometimes Kryptonians are peace lovers who are at one with nature, sometimes they are cold logic people who create all life in test-tube. And sometimes they are so bad and warlike that the Green Lanterns actually let their planet blow up because they hated them so much.
As far as Brainiac's voice actor goes that's just how Michael Emerson sounds/ the roles he gets cast for. Whiney, Weasley little schemer types. And now he's told to play a inhuman robot on top of that.

I mean as with everything Superman related Krypton did it first. Its just as it stands at the moment more people are familiar with Invincible than 80 odd years Krypton related stories. Many of which were retconned multiple times over.
