    Yesterday TSLA announced 8 more factories needed to achieve 20M vehicles/yr. Current 4 factories seem to be ~1M vehicles each so new factories likely will produce ~2M each. Makes sense given gen3 platform intended to take 50% less space and capex to produce. 🤔

It will be really impressive to see them build out a network of charging stations across new countries with varying energy infrastructure. Their next generation vehicle will probably employ the new construction techniques. Elon said that that they are reluctant to switch of model 3 and Y production for any time so chances are that Model 3 and Y will continue to be the same for as long as they can keep churning them out and for as long as they can continue selling them economically as currently produced. That leaves this new model either only available initially in Latin America, or they will be exported around the world from Mexico or current factories will be expanded to create lines for this new model.

    One of the major takeaways I got from the presentation is that new Gigafactories will be unlike all those that precede it. I thought they said the new factories will be 50% smaller and thus 50% cheaper to construct and take 50% less time to build. Did anyone else hear that? As a result, if Shanghai took 9 months to build and the new factories are supposed to take 50% less time, then maybe the one in Mexico will only take 4-6 months or so? I hope they have the groundbreaking ceremony soon and the next generation vehicle rolls off the assembly line in Mexico by the end of 2023. Yes, 2023. If you take into consideration all that Tesla has learned from Shanghai, Austin and Berlin these new factories (and yes, I hope they build multiple of them in parallel this year including Canada and perhaps another to serve the next generation vehicle to China and take market share from BYD) I think this is possible. Maybe I'm delusional, but Tesla seems to keep iterating, improving, learning, and making their products better and the factories themselves are the most important product in my opinion. "The machine that builds the machine." "Alien Dreadnaught." Anyhow, great video as usual Dave, keep up the good work.

I saw others on Twitter, last night, speculating something similar, but hearing this from a Tesla exec make it more like to be true - that the timeline for next-gen 1/2 price car is about 18 months and coinciding with the finishing of Giga Mexico. Next gen robo could be a van for hauling people instead of the 1/2 price car.
    $TSLA volatility will still continue as always, especially if there's even a slight perceived drop in demand for 2023 or if Tesla has to cut prices further to sell all 2M they will make in 2023.

    Feel like there's no way that production doesn't start at some other factory, at least in small numbers, first--surely they have pilot lines churning gen 3 out somewhere before Mexico is running. I was super excited when they indicated that Gen 3 would be produced at all existing (vehicle) factories.

    You are spot on Dave. I'm in South Africa and the pricing for the current models will only be affordable for the very few.
    Elon did mention that the challenge is affordability more than demand, I think they are testing out this idea in Mexico, thereafter 3rd world countries like Africa would be at a distant horizon.

    Other places to consider for this vision of new markets and customers would be Central & South America and West Africa, Central and East Africa. I did not mention specific countries, but Continents and regions within these. The Global South is the next “frontier”… But few in the “North” are able or ready to understand and/or accept that.

    Everyone so disappointed that they didn't share more detail about the new model. I see this as them finally learning a valuable lesson, which is to under promise and over deliver. Big things are coming, but it is still too early to give definite timelines. I think over the next few years, we are going to see growth slowing a non-trivial amount, and everyone will start to think the party is over. But then the explosion of growth will start again. It is going to take 2-4 years before the next paradigm shift comes to high volume fruition. Investor day gave a high level overview of what is coming, but it lacked specifics. This is a good strategy for the long term outlook.

    It's not just the market. It's the workforce. If Peter Zeihan and other demographers are correct, Mexico is and will be one of the nations with the best product assembly workforce of the next several decades, and the new gigafactory location is ideal for Tesla to commence engaging many of these folk before some other company captures their loyalty. This could be critical when the next 'big thing' comes along, be it robots or aircars or spacecraft, Tesla will already have dedicated employees as well as a presence in the best places to recruit more.
    I bet it won't hurt the market consideration if Tesla is also paying well and employing many who will perhaps consider their job secure enough for them to purchase a new EV a few years from now.

If it was true every car plant should be opening in Nigeria and why would they open in Germany? Monterey, MX is well connected to Austin and Mexico has lots of trained workers at a reasonable rate. MX is part of the free trade agreement.

    • @colinkeizer7353
      @colinkeizer7353 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@info781 The demography is somewhat weaker than the geography in Zeihan's work, since population numbers are only as accurate as governments make them. Still, I wouldn't call it nonsense. Now, the interpretations of the data . . . that's a target rich environment. However, don't be surprised if Nigeria eventually proves to be one of the locations considered for a future megafactory, when Tesla gets around to building in Africa. They clearly want at least one major facility per continent, so that it becomes possible to significantly reduce delivery costs. Hence, the gigafactory in Germany.

    The primary reason Tesla is building the factory in Mexico is because Mexico has free trade agreements with a wide range of countries, especially in Latin/South America. Trying to export a car from the U.S. to Latin/South America would result in high tariffs that would price it out of the market. Exporting from Mexico would result in zero or very low tariffs.

    Don't forget that Mexico just recently found some valuable and vast deposits of Lithium, however they aren't minable in the same straight forward manner as the Chilean' deposits, for example. So, an arrangement to cooperate with the extraction and processing of those deposits in the future provides an angle that might have been considered, crucial I reckon, into the final decision.

    My 2019 Honda Fit was built in Mexico. ZERO problems with this car in 80K miles. Was one recall on a fuel system part, but other than that, perfect car. Hope Tesla's factory produces same quality level in Monterrey. Timeline for first production there may match my Tesla purchase, 'cause the Honda will be at middle-age by then. Now if I can figure out if I can afford a Cybertruck (I'm about 700,000th on the list) and another Tesla purchase within (probably) 24 months of each other, without selling TSLA stock to do so.
