My theory is that the villain has accidentally killed the protagonist during their first confrontation (the first scene) and now he is desperately playing the role of the hero but is doing a poor job at it.
This song seems like the main character become the main antagonist and murders someone after singing this in the story just to get paid attention to for sure
Seems like an opener song. I've always conceptualised what a The Normal Album musical would look like, to be honest. I also really think this album has a lot of musical potential (maybe just rearrange some tracks).
I always imagine a random guy singing this song of how important he is to the story, while the actual protagonists are watching in horror as he makes a fool of himself. He never appears after the episode he is in.
I would feel like he would try to kill the main character. Trying to become the main character. And then he eventually would get a spin-off show and realize he doesn’t want to be the main character.
@@elfgooby9650 that a cool idea. For me, I see a guy who is described as “an arrogant and delusional loser” by his own family. So much so that he decides that he wants to be the main character in the series he is in. He was a background character in about five episodes, but now he wants to take center stage. In the foretold episode of this hypothetical show, the arrogant guy tries to butt in what the main antagonists are doing so that he can make it all about himself. The characters get annoyed by him,and they try to get rid of him. But to no avail. Then the guy breaks into this song singing about how important he is,making everyone around him uncomfortable. After the song is done,he gets either killed by a villain or dies in another way. Never to be seen again. The characters don’t really care that he is dead, and just carry on like nothing happened. The lesson is this: if you want to be loved and praised by your peers, all you have to do is be a good person and treat others with respect. Don’t be an utter asshole because you think your better then everyone. Unfortunately,Dennis learnt that the hard way.
I really love the follow up line “The under dog ya cheer for” Not only is it delivered really well but it’s kinda funny, and wraps up the phrase really well.
It could be seen as someone seeing themselves as overly justified, and believing that everyone else *has* to like them no matter what, and if they disagree then they're automatically in the wrong. This song is basically the entire mindset of Handsome Jack from Borderlands, who is my favourite villian in all of fiction.
one thing i think is interesting is how the narrator insists that they’re the good guy, up until the end where they switch “imagine if protagonists just died in the first scene” to “image if antagonists lacked any evil scheme”. For most of the song, they’re trying to justify themselves and their actions with lines like “villains are everywhere, that’s how i know that i’m the hero!” but then they stop. They don’t care if they’re the good guy or even a good person as long as they get to be the main character
This makes me think the guy knows hes the MC, but that doesn't mean he knows what the best choices are. He did terrible things and sacrifice others so that he, the MC can survive. The song delves into him trying to explain to people that he only did those things bc hes the MC and he cant die so early, snapping at people in the last verse. (But I ain't done a fucking thing to you) Ironically, its unclear if there even is an antagonist with an evil scheme.
This makes me think of a musical where the antagonist can break the fourth wall, and uses this to gaslight the audience, with his first song being this one
@@Sandiwichi I could create a vast list of antagonists that would make a better story by putting everyone on the list in one story and forgetting about the protagonists.
It's normal. The main character is the main meat of the story while the antagonist directly argues against the main character's beliefs, which are usually the most moral, which can create a more interesting character. Side characters are like the audience, just viewing the dilemma.
I love how towards the end the singer has sorta come to terms with them self and is like "yeah maybe I am the bad guy, but I'm the main character and you WILL like me"
Why do I have an image of this teenager who is just an average person and they keep imagining themself in all these cool roles as the protagonist or antagonist of different stories and they are imaging themselves as the main character of these stories and they are basically trying to say what the song is saying "don't come at me, i'm the main character so he have to like me" and they're basically having a breakdown while singing this song and imagining themselves as the main characters in different stories
For me I just get the image of this well dressed and overly narcissistic, arrogant dude that from the outside seems to embody the archetype of the hero but cares more about being popular and recognized than whatever the hell this whole "Hero" thing is
I want a movie called "who's the protagonist" that starts with "the main character" singing this song and mid-song he gets shot in a drive-by and we cross pan to a detective investigating the scene and like an hour into the movie when he's confronting the mastermind he gets shot in the back of the head by his partner and now the movie follows her as she shoots the master mind and we get her backstory explained and after another hour of following a heist she's doing she gets caught and given the death sentence as we move over to this song starting again from a different "the main character".
I personally view this as a song about a main character that hates being the main character and just wishes to be seen as a regular guy "so God forbid im seen as just an average human being"
This song reminds me of the main character who slowly goes mad from pressure so he becomes this guy whose so full of himself and u cant do anything about it cuz hes the hero and he begins to snap
I’ve heard so many interpretations about this song. My personal favorite one is how it’s actually about a narcissist who believes they are owed respect and how people HAVE to like them simply due to the fact that they are the main character

Near the end they realise that they will never be the protagonist with out the real protagonist gone, so they try to kill them and they have a battle to the death that lasts almost an eternity because they both have plot armor.
I love that idea! Rather than this being in a literal sense, I feel this song is about someone with narcissistic personality disorder. It sounds like someone's ego protecting themselves from the fact they're a prick to everyone around them.
So there's going to be multiple ways to interpret anything, but rather than talking literally about fiction, I get the feeling that this song is speaking metaphorically about reality. That is, this is meant to be from the viewpoint of someone extremely arrogant who speaks from a position of privilege. As the song goes on, more and more political references get dropped (astroturf, overton, alternative facts, and I'm pretty sure Zyklon B is a reference to the holocaust). Either this is a character from an extremely realistic story, or it's a real person who sees reality as ficiton. At least, that's what I get after a few listens. Could very well be I'm missing something.
I agree that it’s about 10 million times too on the nose to literally be about fiction. I was introduced to this song in the context of it being “about how social media enables and radicalizes narcissism” so I’ve been listening to the song under that context. IMO that interpretation makes the most sense; the general extremely over the top nature of the lyrics (imagery of cartoon superheroes and villains, royalty, etc) is slightly more reminiscent of social media culture. I imagined it as this very mediocre guy who probably had an inherent narcissistic streak and is a social media addict. The aforementioned nature of social media allows him to reach deluded levels of that narcissism over very basic stuff; “Villains are everywhere, that’s how I know that I’m a hero… And I outsmart them with a ray-gun **and a tweet. ** Sorry this is fairly repetitive
You know I was going to roast you for theorizing something so obvious but looking at the comments apparently people are actually missing this. There is no such thing as a mention of Zyklon B that isnt a reference to the Holocaust. Like the song couldn't be more obvious that it is sung from the point of view of a person who is pathologically self centered.
I love interpreting, but there's something about Will Wood songs that are strange. They're so seductive, like they're just waiting to be interpreted in a million ways. Yet will wood himself has said his songs aren't an essay. They arent meant to always have a theme, a cohesive story, or an interpretation.
I think of this as steve in Minecraft, you can do whatever you want, but in survival most people play a route where they maximize the amount of recourses they can get, wich usually means exploiting every mob they possibly can. Also with things like piglians and illager attacking you when you go near there bases and steal their stuff logically and canonical makes sense. Don’t even get me started on what they do to those villagers. Ether way, even if canonical these characters are scummy, even evil in some cases, we are no better, and in that case, Steve is no better.
Id like to hear a story of a main characters written to be so beloved in its fictional world while hated/beloved in reality. The story ends with him realizing he is the main character, becomes hated in his world, becomes the villan at the *last second* and dies. _"But I'm the main character, you cant do this, YOU HAVE TO LIKE ME!!!"_ would be his last words before they get the guillotine
This sounds like someone who's incredibly aware that they are the main character in their story but are starting to absolutely hate it as random shit constantly gets thrown their way "god forbid I'm seen as an average human being" "I ain't done a fuckin thing to you" sounds like someone who's very exhausted of constantly being thrown into some situation with a villain who hates them for no reason other than the fact that they are the protagonist
This song reminds me a lot about my favorite character from a show. He is one of the protagonists and is very full of himself. The shoe even acknowledges this as a flaw, and shows character development. Very cool!
I’m writing a fan fic where the new MC meets up with the MC of the game that the story is a continuation of. In the original story, the MC basically becomes super powerful, yet not omniscient or anything. More like… “I can do anything I want but it might take time to plan it out and I’ll need some pawns to do it” kinda powerful. He IS also a colossal magical threat. Anyway, the new MC basically has the same type of power as the old MC, but with a few exceptions. For one, for most of the fan fics story, the new MC, just call him Jack, is doing basically what the old MC did in his game, but he is doing it alone. No backup or other units or anything. Just him and his demon servents that are part of the whole “one power” thing. And while the enemies that Jack is fighting aren’t AS powerful as the ones that the main character of the game fought, it’s still very impressive. Anyway; my point being, this song encapsulates exactly what the feeling of the old MCs would be. Jack has been getting stronger and stronger. He is more moral, treats others kindly, refuses to kill people that attack him first, ect. Old MC wanted to have Jack be his servent, which would then give HIM command over all the demons Jack has command over once he becomes as powerful as he can be. But Jack is basically being a BETTER MC, and in the story, you can tell that the old MC is kinda terrified. That this person is basically gonna take over his status as “most important”. Now, Jack had no actual intention of going that far… But when the old MC gets violent, and threatens Jack and his loved ones..? Well… self fulfilling prophetic guess.
@@hi-zx6sb No; but he is Ostracized after he fights some angels using demonic power during the apocalypse… Actually I’m planning to make Jack have to fight his mom. Kinda… so basically the angels are using humans for their own means, and Jack is going against them. That kinda thing.
For some reasons I see it as a main character that went through so much and just wants it to stop, but he can't so he copes it through fake self confidence and awful toxic positivity
This song is perfect for my story I’m working on. No one good nor no one’s good but one person needs to act like there the main character so the story can coutine even if she didn’t want to.
I feel like this song is about an MC who’s tired of being praised. They just want to be treated as a normal human being and are singing this song in a sarcastic manner. They just wanna settle down but keep getting summoned for missions and other hero stuff, so they end up just sucking it up and purposefully snapping at people who dote on them and request their aid
This PERFECTLY fits my character! He isn’t cocky in the traditional way of “oh I’m so great” but he think everything is about him and tries so hard to play hero, and does succeed for a while, but it’s all only for the admiration and power, so eventually he has a “nice guy” type tantrum when people call his bluff. I love my little asshole.
For my school project I had to have a lyric video of the song I was using, and the only one I could find was in SPANISH. So i was forced to make my own lol

I imagine a casual, Overpower build in skyrim decked out in fully enchanted dragonbone armor thats the leader of every guild, singing this song to a group of builds that were carefully crafted with lore, story and passion in mind.
This feels like someone who was normal and average but then got thrusted into heroism and keeps having to live up to that title constantly so they snap and just sort of embrace the narcissistic role of “the hero”-but it’s a traditional kind of hero, the ones we look at now and wonder about because they destroy so much and are terrible people sometimes but the plot just kinda works out for them.
ok wow "beating my dead high horse off the high road to low ground, 'cause if you shake your fist at snake in grass it look like punching down" how does he comes up with these lines? the weaving of saying and expression is simply masterful.
Apparently this song is about an internet argument, but I have a much more interesting interpretation and one that fits the lyrics way better. I believe the song is about a main character who is able to break the fourth wall. He keeps doing all these cool things without effort but then everyone in the audience pays attention more to the side characters and antagonist. Those characters are more interesting than who’s supposedly the “main character”. He defends himself in various ways from the audience, causing the audience to hate him. (BUT I AIN’T DONE A FUCKING THING TO YOUUUUU!!! So GOD FORBID I’M seen as just an AVERAGE HUMAN BEING!!! I mean, IMAGINE IF ANTAGONISTS LACKED ANY EVIL SCHEME!!! I believe the song is about a main character who nobody likes, and he KNOWS that nobody likes him, and he can’t do anything about but sit there and wonder what the writers did wrong… So, basically if Rey from the Star Wars sequels could break the fourth wall.

They're so seductive, like they're just waiting to be interpreted in a million ways.
Yet will wood himself has said his songs aren't an essay. They arent meant to always have a theme, a cohesive story, or an interpretation.
yeah that's me
you better be talking about me rn
This is awesome. Hope you get an A+ and a scholarship
This sounds like someone who's incredibly aware that they are the main character in their story but are starting to absolutely hate it as random shit constantly gets thrown their way "god forbid I'm seen as an average human being"
"I ain't done a fuckin thing to you" sounds like someone who's very exhausted of constantly being thrown into some situation with a villain who hates them for no reason other than the fact that they are the protagonist
This song reminds me a lot about my favorite character from a show. He is one of the protagonists and is very full of himself. The shoe even acknowledges this as a flaw, and shows character development. Very cool!
Which show?
So you just not gonna tell us the show?
Now, Jack had no actual intention of going that far…
But when the old MC gets violent, and threatens Jack and his loved ones..?
Well… self fulfilling prophetic guess.
Sounds really cool, where can I find it?
@@retii5047 its neither done nor will I probably ever post it anywhere.
@@Jack-lo5me please post it! I’m dying to read it and create art!
I have a question: is jack an orphan
@@hi-zx6sb No; but he is Ostracized after he fights some angels using demonic power during the apocalypse…
Actually I’m planning to make Jack have to fight his mom. Kinda… so basically the angels are using humans for their own means, and Jack is going against them. That kinda thing.
This is the most entertaining lyric video ive ever seen. I love it. I felt like watching a whole musical. Fantastic man keep going.
For some reasons I see it as a main character that went through so much and just wants it to stop, but he can't so he copes it through fake self confidence and awful toxic positivity
Sounds like a mix of ego because he's a protagonist but he also resents the role heavily.
This song is perfect for my story I’m working on. No one good nor no one’s good but one person needs to act like there the main character so the story can coutine even if she didn’t want to.
Ooh
@@OwoAshes I’ve exactly really close to getting It the bait reading stage^^
Do you have any updates or somewhere where can I see it? I am very curious cuz this sounds very cool
@@BarelyAHuman mhm!! I’m working on the characters backstory’s on wattpad atm

I could 100% see this being sung by Deadpool.
YES
Exactly
HELL YE
Ah yes, I a song that I can finally resonate with.
honey it's 3am, time to have an episode to the main character by will wood
I feel like this song is about an MC who’s tired of being praised. They just want to be treated as a normal human being and are singing this song in a sarcastic manner. They just wanna settle down but keep getting summoned for missions and other hero stuff, so they end up just sucking it up and purposefully snapping at people who dote on them and request their aid
no
@@deplizz7859 Okay
The fact that I've seen people do videos on Tiktok and Instagram using the chorus of this song as a completely literal statement...
How?
2:20 DOCTOR WHO REFRENNNCCEEEE!
I genuinely like Snidely Whiplash as a character but he's pretty underrated so to hear him name dropped is pretty cool
I love unreliable narrators
This PERFECTLY fits my character! He isn’t cocky in the traditional way of “oh I’m so great” but he think everything is about him and tries so hard to play hero, and does succeed for a while, but it’s all only for the admiration and power, so eventually he has a “nice guy” type tantrum when people call his bluff. I love my little asshole.
He sounds so pathetic. I love him.
@@avacadotoast5571 ikr he is pathetic
took so long for there to be a lyric video TT
thank you for the upload
For my school project I had to have a lyric video of the song I was using, and the only one I could find was in SPANISH. So i was forced to make my own lol
@@Sandiwichi ahh i see, well i help you get a good grade!
"imagine if the protagonist just died in the first scene"
Isekai : im not even here baby, im just a hallucination.
Lmao imagine if this about the Protagonist slowly giving up about becoming the Hero and decides to give into being a villain
Booster Gold. The Hero you never heard of. Saving timelines from the background away from the other Justice Leaguers, while no one will ever recognize his work. Except for his best friend Ted Kord.
Yup, definitely making a story based off of this
I have a idea of this, kinda like a fairy tale world were all the main cast have a powers that ties them to a arch type, except the main character who is essentially a background character that stumbled into the story. He does a lot of important things, makes important choices and suffers a lot but throughout the story theirs this undercurrent that the only beings that matter are “named” characters. The cast even has theories that he has a secret archetype. After a traumatic event where tons of background characters die yet the “main character” lives and he seems to be the only that that actual takes it seriously he breaks and convinces himself he survived because he’s the main character and their no other reason he would. He becomes the villain and starts treating archtypes like background characters, that’s when the story switches to another background character that becomes the main character. Whether the first main character is defeated or redeemed could change depending on how the story goes.
so that was fucking brilliant and i want a webtoon with that concept on my desk by noon

Heh… *well you see, in a story that I made up, the main character actually did die in the first scene..so…*
I always thought the quiet “it’s nothing new” was “except for me”
This song seems like the main character become the main antagonist and murders someone after singing this in the story just to get paid attention to
ngl the thumbnail scared the shit out of me
This is probably the perfect song for my depressed class clown friend
This sounds like the song for a character who can either be the hero or the villain of the story depending on your perspective
So pretty much Walter White, since the entire BB fandom is split on what he truly is
This is my new favorite song it’s so cool ( I love acting this out )
Same
I imagine a casual, Overpower build in skyrim decked out in fully enchanted dragonbone armor thats the leader of every guild, singing this song to a group of builds that were carefully crafted with lore, story and passion in mind.
2:48 That was literally a jumpscare wtf
4:00 that swear was crazy
This feels like someone who was normal and average but then got thrusted into heroism and keeps having to live up to that title constantly so they snap and just sort of embrace the narcissistic role of “the hero”-but it’s a traditional kind of hero, the ones we look at now and wonder about because they destroy so much and are terrible people sometimes but the plot just kinda works out for them.
The jumpscare in this got me
So glad everyone else feels the Homelander vibe, too.
this is the personal anthem of every middle schooler
This somg be giving me anti-hero vibe. (Main character who is also a villain, like Megamind or Gru)
This song is Handsome Jack’s anthem imo

Theater kid: the musical.
Mr. Bean jumpscare
I'd like to imagine some little kid or group accidentally tossed a rock at a guy and this is him going off on them
You know there is a RTS game that has a unit called a Protagonist I just imagine this song plays in its head whenever it fights.
I believe the song is about a main character who nobody likes, and he KNOWS that nobody likes him, and he can’t do anything about but sit there and wonder what the writers did wrong…
So, basically if Rey from the Star Wars sequels could break the fourth wall.
One of my interpretations of this song is just a person mocking how main characters act.
