How to make a resin dragon egg with no lathe

- On this episode of Bens Worx I cast walnut burl in epoxy resin to make a resin dragon egg. I left it to cure in the pressure pot and then shaped it using a sander, I polished it up with some Yorkshire grit on the buffing wheel.

Thanks for watching!

I think we need more videos like this - many TH-cam makers have very much better-equipped workshops than their audiences - workarounds for advanced results with basic tools are really useful
👍
i have a small workshop myself
This is such a good point, I love seeing projects from modestly equipped workshops as opposed to large commercial floor based machines that the vast majority have no access to
Good point. Agree.
Agreed! I'd love to know what can be done with a Dremel and drill and reciprocating saw. That's all the tools I own! LOL!
Wow he makes everything so easy and manageable. Not only that but he suggests other ways ! He truly loves what he does. Thanks Ben . You make it look so fun 🤩. Music so nice too.
Thankyou 😊
Resin egg without a lathe... YUS!!! Resin egg using every OTHER kind of shop equipment known to man..... UUUGG!
Theres no way you free handed that! Holy crap! That looks as good as if it was done on a lathe! Incredible!
Fresh falling snow is great back ground music.
Yes it is
Mate, just flicked on to this as casual background noise and within 30 seconds of listening to you, you've earned a like and a subscribe and I'm now sitting down to binge watch what you are doing and to hell with the housework for the day - you do really interesting stuff and present it in a very engaging way. Kudos to you, fella!
Thanks Mate 👍
Dido! Im stuck now!! Lol
Thanks for providing these alternatives. A lathe, even a "cheap" one, is not something that many of us hobbyists can easily afford. Using tools that you already have is perfect for me. Thanks for the video and your amazing work.
Thanks Mate
You sir are a *(Master Craftsman). Plus you are an easy teacher to follow. I like how you said. If you don't have this. Well you can use this. You sir have a new subscriber. You really are a gifted man. You make your country proud.
Thanks Mate
Look beautiful, the individual look from the miss shape is stunning and shows it hand made, I like it better than the perfect shape one's.
Keep up the stunning work
Thanks Garry 👍
Also real eggs are also not perfect.
Putting the drill in a vice works good too. Then use files to shape it. I have done this with steel nuts to make different things. Works great as a basic lathe.
Love this video. Thanks for giving us alternatives to all the fancy woodworking tools most of us don't have. Great job.
Thanks Kathleen
I love this! Alternatives are so important to newbies like me as much as people with less equipment because it teaches me the versatility of tools. Also great to have some resin advice from an Australian
Thanks Kate
it turned out great, and you do a FANTASTIC job of giving modifications. I appreciate that
Thanks Christina! :)
THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO SEE. BECAUSE NOT EVERY ONE HAS A LATHE ! VERY NICE !
Thanks Mate
Great stuff, Ben. Thank you so much for showing how to do it without all the shop tools. Very inspiring, and fantastic finished piece!
Thanks Mate
Just a drill, table sander, drill press, bandsaw, and buffing wheel. Most people who have all that probably also have a lathe.
Beautiful! I love how the colors sparkle and change. Good job doing it without the lathe -- but, aren't you glad you have one!
Thanks Wendy, yes I do love my lathe!
I love how you explain everything you're doing and giving the tips as you experienced/learned it. 👍😊 And I think the end result is perfectly beautiful. Awesome work!
Thankyou :)
I loved how you suggested substitutes for different equipment if you didn't have the main one as well as what worked and what didn't in the process.
Thanks :)
I love how you give so many alternate solutions for those of us who don’t have all these specialized tools
Thanks James
Beautiful piece!
Thanks Mate
Didn't read all the comments to see if this has been mentioned but you need to reseat your chuck and tighten your belts and you will have considerably less play and wobble in that press. Overall though it was a joy seeing you create a baby dragon unhatched!
Thanks Mate, unfortunately I couldn’t get the best grip on the timber and the force i was applying kept sending it off balance. I got there in the end 👍
Wow Ben, the egg came out absolutely stunning. So beautiful. The colours are just mesmerizing. A wonderful project xxx
Thanks Elaine
It's good you have shown this method so the people who don't have a lathe can get involved in this satisfying pass time
Thanks Mate
I feel like it would've been easier to make an egg-shaped mold in the first place, but the result is great nonetheless.
And I really appreciate the mention of substitutes for the advanced tools, because a lot of people don't have a workshop that's equipped that well
he didnt actually use any substitutes
@@Inadisguise Why would you use substitutes when you have the real thing?
@@little_moth the same reason he made the egg without his lathe in the first place...
@@corvidconfidential8826 My question was rhetorical
If I tried to make a dragon's egg I would probably try to add the head of a dragon inside the egg. Or maybe a mini dragon inside the egg. You have a really nice talent making these.
As far as the Clarity, Shine and Smoothness of it, this is the Best I have seen!!!
Thanks Mate
Most beautiful egg i have ever seen. Well done
Just want to say that I appreciate your commentary on using cheaper tools as an alternative.
Thanks Jeremy
I said to myself "This guy sounds like an Aussie" and then I checked the description and lo and behold I was right, glad to see fellow Aussie's doing something cool like this
Thanks Mate

I just stumbled upon your videos today, and I have to say that I absolutely love them! I find them super relaxing and as a good way to wind down after a long day. The tutorial is also exceptionally well done! Thank you!
Thankyou! :)
Truly a beautiful creation!
Thankyou
@@BensWorx no prob Bob!
Finally someone who explains as long as he goes... thanks ben
I subscribed to your channel because you give options to people that may not have the higher level equipment. Respect.
That was so amazing. Wish there was a LOVE button as LIKE just doesn't give it justice. I don't have a lathe so never in my wildest dreams would I think that this could be accomplished with basic tools. Thanks Ben.. I am keen to give it a try now
Looks like a jewel inside the egg. Great work.
Thanks Mate
Wow. Thank you so much for all the tips! This is really helpful.
The egg turned out so beautiful.
What a brilliant idea, thanks, I'll be trying this soon!
Thanks for this tutorial. I am a newbie working with wood and resin with limited tools so to see that I can attempt to make this without a lathe is great :-)
Thanks Michelle
Im just a girl but boy oh boy can I have some fun with this! Thanks for sharing Ben
👍
Wow 😍 beautiful! I like when you polish the piece at the end and it gets shiny and perfect. That pigment is amazing!
Thanks Mate
so i havent tested it but you could likely use the drill or anything with a high power motor to remove the bubbles from the resin, just turn it on and hold the cup on the power tool (not the drill bit or blades just the main body) and the vibrations should help the bubbles rise to the top, its not perfect but if you dont have a presser pot it will be better than nothing.
It's the imperfections that make the piece a work of art! Art is not perfection, it is a work of beauty. You have a wonderful talent! Your explanation of how to make one is great! I'm going to hit the subscribe button and see what else you come up with.
Thanks Jane :)
I really enjoyed watching your process on the Egg today ,look forward to seeing more
Wow! The pigment is really beautiful in the final result. This was such a cool video! Thank you by the way for suggesting alternative tools for people with fewer large power tools. This was super informative. You just earned yourself another subscriber! Really love this project. Thank you for uploading!
Thanks Sydney :)
Your tips on tool alternatives were great
Thanks Heather
Looking at getting into resin art. Your videos are very instructive. Thank you.
Thanks Mate
I really like that you have the same song in your videos it becomes very nostalgic very quickly after going through your vids.
Actually turned out really good.
Awesome job! Love the tips for people who don't have all of your tools. Thank you!
Thanks Mate
Very nice! Best of all is you've shown me that I can do that. (I don't have a lathe.)
Thanks Deb
Hi ben, hope you and the family are ok, that egg is really nice, you should be really proud of yourself.... 🏴
Thanks Keith 👍
I really need more of this, looks amazin for collection
REALLY needed to mention the need for a dust mask
I think it looks fantastic. I really love it.
Brilliance just Brilliance I love that egg 🥚
When I watch this video all I can think of is Korg from Thor Ragnarok doing a tutorial on how to make a Dragon Egg. XD (Great video btw)
Hahahahaha thanks Mate
Korg with a little bit of Steve Irwin mixed in :D
Yes! Me too. He sounds a lot like him. Waiting for him to say "I tried to start a revolution but didn't print up enough pamphlets" 😂
Wow! A beaut of an egg! Well done!
-Ellen
Thanks Ellen
I think it was agreat idea to make this video. Hopefully this video inspires others that have held back because they don't have the big pieces of equipment. Being able to make an egg with items that are commonly found in the home.
Great Job My Friend Thanks For Share 😄💓💓💓👍
Thanks Ramiro
I have been looking all over to find out if you can use UV resin with epoxy resin. FINALLY 😁 thanks for the great tutorial
No worries Marie 👍
You know that not all eggs are of a perfect shape so that makes yours a perfect egg. Great work.
Thanks Paul
Beautiful work. I'm not really a handywoman but this video is very fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mate
Ben that is truly impressive. I've wanted one of those dragon eggs and I have tried to do the same as this method a few times without luck. I'm gonna have to buy one to own one 😞. LoL I seriously enjoy your videos Thank you please keep making them 👍
Thanks Mark, keep trying Mate I’m sure you’ll get it 👍
@@BensWorx I'll let you Know
Good job Ben.
Thanks Mate
"Eh man, I'm Korg, this is Meek, we're gonna hop on that ginormous spaceship and get out of here. Wanna come?"

У Вас Золотые руки!Всё что вы делаете, всё шикарно, супер красиво и с любовью!Удачи Вам!Узбекистан🇺🇿👍
A nother wonderful piece
Thanks Mate
To be honest it looks like a shape of a real egg. I feel that is more valuable to being realistic in shape.. not so commercially designed.. great work
Thanks Mate
I can't thank you enough for this! I've been contemplating practicing some art but don't want to go all in for a lathe until I'm sure I'll like it. This allows me to do just that. Much obliged.
No worries mate
You deserve more likes!!
That is amazing!!
And I love the colours inside of it
Thanks Mate
@@BensWorx great job mate.
Thanks Michael
dumbass
A suggestion would be to leave the bottom round like a egg and make a stand for it, it would look better in my opinion
Very tiny, very cool
WOW NOW THAT'S TALENT. SO BEAUTIFUL..GREAT JOB...💙❤LOVE IT
Thanks Mate
Man that egg was so wobbly fast I thought it was going to fly off! Very sharp, man - glitter for guys 😎
Thanks Mate
Very cool. Love the alternative technique
Thanks Mate
Man that looks incredible
I just finished making a lamp housing from olive wood with no lathe. I started with a Skill saw and then a grinder. Ended up just sanding it smooth. Not bad.
👍
Bloody nice work there Ben 👍😀
Cheers for another great video mate
Thanks Mate
Your subscribers have a very good point. Many shade tree hobbyists don't have top of the line equipment.
You do amazing work and have great skills. Share those skills. How about one video a month, or so, just for starters you show how to do some things with simpler tools.
Also, I'm not sure what it's called in your area, but here in the states we have flea markets where people can buy used tools. How about a video on what to look for to ensure they bought a good tool?
Just some ideas that I would love to see an expert of your level share with us. Thank you, sir.
Thanks for the feedback Brent, I’ll see what I can do 👍
Stunning job chief 🏴
Thanks Willie
Alternate approach.. make an egg from air dry clay then make a silicone mold. Cast the resin in that mold to get the egg result.
Another great project
Thanks Mate
This is so pretty, your so talented.
Looks beautiful. I love the look of that colour changing pigment. Great video 👍
Good job Ben! I like you showing how to without machines, thanks for that!
Great work! I've seen one of your vids and now this one, I'm subscribing! Thanks for sharing this, Pam
Thanks Pam
Have you considered buying some hollow easter eggs, putting the stuff inside you want in the egg then knock a tiny fill hole in the end and filling it with resin? That would give you the egg shape and cut down the work to almost nothing I would think.
That is SOOOO beautiful.
Good idea 👍😉
Thanks Mate
Wow!!! Beautiful work.
Thanks Rob
I have to say, I love watching your video's. I learn something new every time. Thank you!
Thanks Mate!
