- Hakuho continues his systematic dismantling of everyone's self-esteem with destruction of new ozeki Shodai in today's practice session. Read all his comments here, plus get the latest on Takayasu and injured Kotoshogiku.
Kotoshogiku is an inspiration.
Hakuho is back in Beast Mode. I bet he's gonna be slapping a lot next basho
But he usually slaps (and forearms) more when he is in weaker condition. When he is thriving like he now seems to be, you see a lot less of those tachiais with a slap and elbow combo since he doesn't need them to be sure to win.
Yeah I noticed that too Repe. When he needs to lean on those technique he does. He's got deep game. He also does it to bully and demoralize the competition
and some still have the nerve to keep saying that Hakuho has to retire because he withdraws from too many bashos... if he keeps beating the sanyaku rikishis as easily as if they where juryos.... then no one should even suggest in private that he is not upholding the yokozuna title properly!!! he indeed still is the strongest man under the sumo sky... no doubt about it....
Yokozuna do have the privilege of sitting out bashos when they're not 100%, or even withdraw if they happen to be having a bad tournament. Ozeki and Sekiwake ranked sumo would get demoted if they did that.
Like you said.... it's their privilege... an earned privilege!!! You also have to consider that if they get beaten regularly they are bounded to retire from sumo... no demotion.... full retirement
@@willyt664 Even in retirement a Yokozuna still gets many privileges. A fat sumo pension being the main one, and recognition due to still holding on to their title.
I don't think that's what's on their mind.... if it was they would just retire before getting so injured as to not be able to compete..... but alas here we are... seeing how they do everything they can to recover and keep competing... and keep wining bashos!!
@@willyt664 Because they make far more from their monthly salary, sponsors, media appearances and winning bouts and bashos. That's why they generally want to stay on as long as they can until they're forced into retirement.
Having these videos to watch after Coming back from a vacation to the mountains with no internet for seven days is a really treat.
Hakuho is like the John Brzenk of sumo. It doesn't really matter how he is lighter than or less muscular than many. He simply has an unbelievable combination of skill, levers, strengths in the right place and natural understanding of how to use his body. Truly incredible.
For those that don't know, Brzenk is an arm wrestling legend.
And the analogy to Hakuho is spot on.
not at all hakuho is not an underdog like brzenk he actualy has it all size, muscle ,stamina, skill you could call enho a brzenk of sumo if enho was that good as hakuho that is and iam talking for a top shape hakuho because now he is on the downside of his carer to many inuries to many batles but he still reking ppl left and right there isnt so much competition tho it whould be diferend if some one like Asashoryu was still around or some one at this level of straight and skill also brzenk got dominated by denis cyplenov and devon larat and alot of others hakuho never been dominated he mostly looses because of injuries or very rare ocasions
Except hakuho isn't smaller or less muscular than many. Hakuho has pretty much the ultimate sumo physique.
and this is why i think they should leave the Yokos alone, they are still WAY ahead of everyone else, so no, they shouldn't retire.
They are both 35 don't think they got that much left in them. Hakuho was planning on retiring after Olympics so he now has to hold on until 2021 and Kakuryu also seems to be contemplating retirement.
They are both on borrowed time.
@@konsg598 agreed. Their bodies just cannot keep up. For better future health, it’s best they retire now
Did you guys even watch the video? Hakuho scored 19-1 against Shodai, and Ozeki an the tournament winner. That is total domination. So what "borrowed time" and "best they retire now" and "not much left in them"? Nobody in all of history would have done better than 19-1 against Shodai.
@@potzysk2 No one denies that Hakuho is great and not only I have watched the video but also watched enough of his career to know that he has slowed down and that he intends to retire soon. Also this is practice and not an official tournament so don't focus too much on the results. I mean practice? Are we talking about practice? Man...practice?
Amazing reporting thank you sir.
In my mind, Hakuho quoted Randy Quaid from the end of independance day when he showed up: " Hello boys... I'm back."
My gosh, if anything, I believe Hakuho’s injuries are scared of Hakuho himself now lol! On a real note though, it is seriously impressive how great he’s doing against top Rikishi’s at 35 years of age. I really started to like Shodai this last Basho, really hope as a new Ozeki that he doesn’t let this get to him, since he deserved that last Yusho. Either way, a fan of both, and hope nothing but the best for them! Thanks again for another great video Chris!
Hakuho is a legendary wrestler. It's no surprise that he's kicking butt in the dohyo
Wow! I just hope that Hakuho remains healthy for another yusho! 🥰
Holy crap man. Hak is a BEAST.
To be a fly on the wall during these sessions...
Those were practice bouts i wouldn't read too much into them. The yokozuna always dominate in practice. Even Ex-kisenosato is still beating takayasu more than one year after retirement...
That said it still shows that Hakuho will be fit next tournament and most likely participate, which is great.
I'm sure when Shodai and Hakuho meet there it will look much different.
a great fighter with a modest character is a legend.
a great fighter with an exaggerated ego is just another great fighter ...
Oh I love Shodai so much. But he really has a long way to go, physically and mentally.
I wonder if we'll get another Yokozuna while Hakuho is still fighting. He really is in a league of his own.
Yes, I always felt the same. Shame he takes so many injury retirements, because he really is so much better technically, physically, and tactically than the other rikishi. Amazing to see. I personally can't stand his behavior sometimes, so for me he is the greatest heel, and when he gets beaten, I feel all the joy of the fans flinging their cushions down on the ring.
Hakuho is the best, no doubt, in terms of dominance over such a long period.
With full respect.
As much as I love to watch Hakuho, I did enjoy the last tournament without him as it seemed every sumo’s eyes had flared up knowing the title was possible versus when Hakuho is there.
When Hakuho is on, he is unbeatable. The rest of the top division has had years to catch up and they can’t. But, he withdraws from too many tournaments.
I feel bad for kotoshogiku. It seems clear to me that he’s just going to keep losing and keep falling until the limits of his injuries forcefully stops him
1:05 “I’m just glad I didn’t get injured” 😅
That made me laugh as well. I appreciate the guys candid, and self-deprecating, honesty.
Asanoyama needs to spar with his fellow ozekis and Hakuho to really evaluate where hes at mentally and physically. Right now I dont have the outmost confidence in him working out on his own with weak stablemates unless he somehow awakens a monster fighting spirit for the next basho.
Hakuho is King.
I wished ashashoriu dont forced to retire so this 2 legends they keep this rivalry and this sport on fire from the day that asha retire the sumo became more poor. Hakuho wants to compete but he neads someone to motivate him someone to build a rival. this sports nead more yokozunas
Shodai showed up to the call out. He's holding back for the basho
when you get beaten up like this, you are not holding back. after a few humiliating fights you would react just to keep face. he couldn't, and that is all you need to know about the gap between him and Hak.
@@TNM001 damn
probably the opposite happens knowing all the posturing shinenigans
Even if Aasanoyama and Harumafuji weren't forced to retire early, Hakuho would still be the Yokozuna of his generation
Normal, Hakuho is on another level.
A "bouyant" Hakuho...great vocabulary.
I hope he doesnt overdo in practice bouts and ends up getting injured before the basho
Damn, rough ride for Shodai. While Hak is still here, reaching Yokozuna is impossible for him.
Maybe so. Shodai needs to awaken his spirit and know that he is where he belongs.
@@John-zj9ur asanoyama got destroyed by a retired kisenasato in practice. That tells you a lot about how good kise was.
I think there is an element of respect and reverence that affects the performance of those who practice with the Yokozuna, and established Ozeki.
Remember how Kakuryu and even Goeido used to thrash all the lower rankers in practice similarly?
Often they would go on to eek out only minimally-acceptable performances against the very same rikishi weeks later in the real matches.
Perhaps there is also some gamesmanship (sandbagging) in practice, so as to deny the opponent's true knowledge of your power & techniques.
That said, unfortunately Shodai in particular seems to carry these thrashings into the real matches, and didn't begin to fulfill his potential until Kakuryu started to fade and abstain from practice matches.
Nah, y'see, this is 4D chess. Shodai was a professional punching bag, so previous work experience allows him to know Hakuho better than most.
So kiribayama will be komusubi instead of takayasu? And the second one is terunofuji?
Banzuke will be released on Monday at 6:00 am JST. M1e Terunofuji (8-5-2) should be the East Komusubi. West Komusubi is between M5e Kiribayama (9-4-2) and M6e Takayasu (10-5). My guess is Takayasu. We shall see.
Mainoumi is right when he says Japanese rikishi are too soft compared to Mongol ones. Terunofuji would be right up there with Hakuho and Kakuryu had he not got injured and sick. And the last two great Yokozunas were Asashoryu and Harumafuji. And almost no one would deny that Hoshoryu and Kiribayama are joi bound and serious future players. I wonder if it is a cultural matter. Too much of living vicariously through idols in manga, video games and jpop? Too much manzai comedy in daily life with the boys? The embarrassing young oyakatas hosting the frivolous Kyokai youtube channel are indeed more like manzai comedians than anything else. Maybe Mongol grit is just plain superior to Manzai rikishi. Chinyonofuji is rolling in his grave.
Japanese news better start covering you! 😉
As I said in the previous vid all this showboating means nothing if they beat him in a few weeks, he knows as we all do, thats when his opponents will give it their all and thats the test.
Lool shoulda rested up
Hakuho doesn't need to practice ... Just heal for sumo sake please
Shodai : "I'm just happy that I didn't get injured."
Well I guess that just about settles it. Shodai is unlikely to advance to becoming a yokozuna. If he survives awhile, say 2 years, as an ozeki, that will be about right. From what I've seen, the power is there for Shodai but the technical skill is absent. Against Hakuho an absence of technical skill is usually fatal.
Takayasu deserves komusubi in my opinion
I love giku. But he should retire already
19/20?? Yikes- that’s not a competitive Ozeki
Yeah. Makes me wonder if he really just had a lucky run in Sept. He has to modify his technique or he will not be Ozeki for long.
If history in the last couple of years has shown anything, Hakuho will be unable to continue any momentum, and both Yokozuna are in trouble.
