Angel Hernandez Calls Strike 3 on Gleyber Torres Even Though Pitcher Francis Stepped Off Rubber: Eh?

- After HP Umpire Angel Hernandez called Yankees batter Gleyber Torres out on strikes in the 1st inning vs Toronto, New York manager Aaron Boone argued the strikeout shouldn't count because Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis stepped off the rubber during his delivery, causing Torres to back out of the box. TLDR; I have a pitch clock violation on the pitcher. Automatic ball.
First, the pitch location issue - notwithstanding the disengagement issue, location-wise this pitch was a strike and correctly officiated as such. The reason is Torres never enters his crouch as the pitch approaches home plate and his standing stance thus raises the strike zone top. The on-screen graphics are, again, incorrect.
Second, the disengagement issue. This is where Angel needs help from his crew, namely 1B Umpire Nic Lentz and 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Lance Barksdale. These umpires can see the pitcher's pivot foot slipping off the rubber the best. But during the umpire conference, they don't do anything about the actual strike three call. Official Baseball Rules 5.07(a) and 6.02(a)(5) amongst others discuss illegal pitches, including the quick pitch, known as a pitch that is made before the batter is reasonably set in the batter's box.
Except this batter WAS already reasonably set. Instead, it is an interrupted delivery and should have been called a dead ball when it happened. One wild card factor involved? The pitch clock. The timer had reached three seconds when the pitcher stumbled off the pitcher's plate, meaning he rushed his way back to re-engaging quickly in order to beat the expiration of the timer.
So instead of simply washing this out as a "start over from scratch" resolution, the proper call here most likely would be a pitch clock violation on the pitcher. - กีฬา

I have a TH-cam playlist for Angel goofs. Been building it for years.
@@119Agent Pick another umpire. You'll find out that they ALL make their fair share of mistakes. Look at the stats on overturned calls. Where's the hard-on for Angel Hernandez come from? Maybe he was right to sue.
NotEvenClose. 😅
I am glad you put it in the end because the entire time you were talking about the quick pitch/intent to deceive issue I was saying "None of that matters in a pitch clock violation".
Me too. I didn't know the exact rule, but I was definitely thinking in the pitch clock era this has to be something. Like there has to at least be a signal that the pitcher just took on of his pick offs. But yeah, with no runners on, how does it work? Only the catcher can ask for time? The pitcher can't step off even once?
One issue is that the pitcher should be required to stop and drop his hands once he disengages. (5.07a1 comment C)
My comment exactly. Not up to date on the pitch clock rules, but it’s an illegal pitch, automatic ball, when he disengages without dropping his hands. With runners on, it’s a balk.
Thanks for the clarification
And by popular demand, previously on Angel Hernandez Saga
When I was umpiring another lifetime ago we used almost exclusively 2-man crews. The plate umpire took from the pitcher's waist and up as far as being in a legal motion. The base umpire took from the waist down for the exact reasons you mentioned about the the pitcher's front foot obscuring his back foot. It worked great. Now, how do three base umpires, all making over $100k per year, miss this patently illegal move?
The same way 3 NBA officials pass on a six-step travel: this is what the league wants called: "just let 'em play".
I do not see how the pitcher made eye contact with the batter (new rule) before beginning his windup and subsequent pitch.
That was my thought too - even if the re-engagement was allowed, Torres was expecting the eye contact pause before the windup began.
Re watch, he definitely did make eye contact.
The whole crew kicked it. We don't normally care if you keep your hands together after stepping off in the windup but this was a QP. In the set we would say "time don't do that" so everyone would know when the pitcher had come set. "Rule 5.07(a) Comment: Pitchers may disengage the rubber after taking their signs but may not step quickly onto the rubber and
pitch. This may be judged a quick pitch by the umpire. When the
pitcher disengages the rubber, he must drop his hands to his sides.
Pitchers will not be allowed to disengage the rubber after taking
each sign.
So if it was a pitch clock violation for a disengagement with no runners on, should it have been a ball then? Or should the pitcher have been charged with a timeout?
The pitcher isn't allowed any "free" disengagements ("free" meaning the clock fully resets) with the bases empty-disengagement resets only occur with runners on base. The only timeout that would qualify here would be a mound visit, and that's something the catcher would need to run out to the mound for.
Interesting wrinkle as well is that if a pitcher requests a new ball with less than 9 seconds on the timer, if there are runner(s), the pitcher is charged with a disengagement. But if the pitcher requests a new ball with less than 9 seconds on the clock with the bases empty, it is an automatic ball since the pitcher is not allowed any disengagements with no runners on base.
Wasn't there another Angel issue during this game where there was a pitch just about dead centre that he called a ball?
yes lol
yeah but that's par for the course for angel. not even worth talking about anymore. sad i know.
So two violations that the crew should have caught, and didn't. How am I not surprised when Angel is running things?
The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap.
Him standing up is not “in his stance and prepared to hit a pitch”. Just as if an inside pitch stood him up, the zone wouldn’t change because of it.
Did you watch the video? At 0:40 you see Torres in a stance, but he is not crouched down. If you then watch further, he steps backward but NEVER crouches. Thus he established his strike zone for that pitch to be him standing.
Its like the umpires in this video, you focused too much on thinking you were smarter than everyone else about the rules, but missed the obvious. Admitting you were wrong would be the intellectually honest thing to do.
@@fomori2 so you’re saying if a batter crouches all the way down into a squat he establishes the strike zone for that pitch? Yeah, you’re lost. 😂
Angel always has to be involved in any controversial call. The official definition of the strike zone is “The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap. In order to get a strike call, part of the ball must cross over part of home plate while in the aforementioned area.” The batter was not in his stance to hit so the strike zone should not be higher for one pitch.
.....but this wasn't even an "Angel" controversial call, so why bring him up? If John Tumpane was behind the plate, would you say that Tumpane always has to be involved?
Can you do one for the Catcher's interference call on Serven from this series?
I’ve got a quick pitch Ball on this one.
Thank you. Excellent job.
As always, spot on!
Love the lace, btw! 😊
When Angel is involved, there's nothing close about the call
Wow pretty darn good analysis..Great job...
Thanks for breakin' this one down. :)
Thanks so much for your great video on this! (By popular demand, apparently, including from me!)
The Strike zone is NOT determined by the position of the batter while standing, rather the batter's position when ready to swing. Therefore the called strike was 6" high.
Gunna need another Angel video from the Wyatt Langford at bat last week, just for the lol’s 😂
The following is the definition of a strike zone from MLB web site: The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap. In order to get a strike call, part of the ball must cross over part of home plate while in the aforementioned area. Note the words batter in stance and prepared to swing. When he was standing full up he was not in his normal stance nor was he prepared to swing at a pitch ball. The pitch by this definition was clearly a ball. I am aware that this normal stance stuff was added to prevent batters from essentially eliminating the strike zone by an exaggerated crouch but it would also seem to apply to this play.
The Nixon voiceover (“I am not a crook”) with Angel Hernandez doing the Nixon pose was priceless! Well done!!!
Great analysis!!
I just gotta say, I really, really, really despise the pitch clock.
More than I despise Angel. Which is a lot.
I only wish this would of been a Mest broadcast just to hear Keith Hernandez go off , would of been epic
If this was cricket he would be long gone.
The batter clearly saw the disengagement.
The location of the pitch doesn't matter when it was a 'dead pitch'.
Angel probably cant see that disengagement field umps need to pick it up, but the batter saw it...
"I am not a crook" will never get old.
One of my favorite baseball channels. 5 out of 5 . Thanks.
Either way, Torres has a solid point to complain, protest, or argue…
but he can't protest since we gave replay review
When I saw this, I immediately thought of Lindsay and was praying I was right assuming this was an accidental quick pitch.
So what was the final call?
"Angel didn't see it.." No kiddin?
He had a clear view of the disengagement and quick pitch. Catcher wasn’t in his way at all. Stop making excuses for terrible umpires
A belly-button high pitch is a strike at all levels of play.
Before you even started your explanation at the beginning of the video, I already saw it was a quick pitch in violation of the rules. I realized it’s either a ball to the batter or a “ start over” . I agree just start over rather than assess a ball to the count
The "Angel Hernandez didn't see it" excuse falls short because the batter saw it immediately and told him. Hernandez's ignorance at thst point is 100% on himself.
Yup, in this day and age it's a pitch clock violation. SMH
0:25 I sometimes ump youth/HS games. When the count is 2-2, I call it "The Nixon Count".
I hate the pitch clock the automatic runner at second in extras, the limits on pick off attempts. I dont mind the shift ban.
I knew it was more the 3bu/1bu call... still, Angel is starting to rub off on his crew... ugh...
New crew chief Lance Barksdale has the highest plate performance record of any of the ten new crew chiefs. Angel is ranked second in the four man crew overall. Lance is correct 95 %
So am I right to assume that it takes 3+ umpire's errors on a play before the "defend umpires at all costs" brigade stands down? The comments section seemed pretty quiet on that front here...
Some weird pitching ticks nowadays 😂
Strike zone shouldn't change based on how the batter is standing.
umpires should be the ultimate rules lawyers and yet they seem to know less than most hardcore baseball fans. the first time i saw this i knew it should've been a quick pitch violation. didn't even consider the clock violation. four of them together seems to be even more useless.
Not even close to a true and accurate statement.
that is quite a spin!!! i guess the umpires shouldn't be expected to compute more than 1 rule at a time......
Are you guys not going to address the Langford record setter that Hernandez called last week or are you just Hernandezed out already this year?😂
100% should be a time out or a balk because the pitcher stepped off means he is not ready
How about a video of the catchers interference call on Toronto? Catcher has the ball in his glove, Yankee taps his glove with his bat on a fake check swing. Toronto is called for interference.
Your explanation is spot on. Thank you. 🙏
We need to stop using the phrase “hybrid” as it relates to F1’s starting position. They are either in the windup or they are in the stretch position.
What team at this point even likes this guy? I can’t stand the Yankees, but this guy is a whole new level
I disagree that the upper limit of the strike zone changes when the batter stands up. The box was just wrong to begin with. The upper (and lower) limits are based on the batter “as he prepares to strike at the pitch.” A batter standing up with no intention of swinging is not preparing to strike.
EXACTLY! The strike zone isn't determined when a player walks up to the plate, it's determined when the player gets into batting position. That was clearly a ball, above the zone.
doesn't matter
@@johnthomas1422 he didn't walk up to plate he was ready to hit than he stood up who fault is that now

Two for one on Gleyber.
One engaged or reengaged hands have to separate
When Angel is behind the plate teams should offer discount tickets or at least free beverages for him fucking up the game.
That would be hilarious. Add a counter of "Angel's Hellish Mistakes" on the jumbotron with a sound effect and unique animation (maybe one where the devil sends Angel to hell) as well.
Doing so definitely would get a team in trouble with the league, but for a team out of contention later in the season it might be a fun promotional gimmick for an otherwise low attendance weekday day game, and the fans would like the free sodas.
I’ll blame Angel anyway.
AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Reengaged with hands together, that's something, too, right?
Yes, you are correct. Pitcher must get on the rubber with his hands separated
and he filed a lawsuit, because he wasn't getting any world series games. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was a quick pitch/balk.... Assess a ball on the batter in this situation, not a DO OVER.... and a pitch clock violation on F-1. The entire crew screwed the pooch on this...
What about 'When the pitcher disengages the rubber, he must drop his hands to his sides.'
Rule 5.07(a) Comment: Pitchers may disengage the rubber after taking their signs but may not step quickly onto the rubber and pitch. This may be judged a quick pitch by the umpire. When the pitcher disengages the rubber, he must drop his hands to his sides.
I blame Angel.
Torres didn't step out
This is why we should NEVER accept AI calling strikes and balls - no judgment. Get rid of the STUPID F'ING BOX.
Baseball is trash when Hernandez is behind the plate
Even if Angel does make the right call once in a while, any controversial call such as this, is always going to be blamed on him because he has such a bad reputation for making bad calls that the default position of the players and managers is going to be that he got it wrong. He's like the husband who cheats on his wife all the time, but the one time he is "good", he is still accused of the indiscretion. Angel Hernandez cannot be trusted to make any correct calls on the field. He needs to go...yesterday!
Angel is rubbing off negatively on the entire crew! Time to pay this man off and get him out of MLB!
0:07 yooo it’s my comment! I’m not a swifty!
Torres should’ve tackled balls and strikes
Perfect example of why the box on the TV can be a terrible thing sometimes
At home it’s “obviously” a ball so everyone who looks at the tv thinks the umpire is cheating the game or rigging it or whatever
This balk call is on the field umpires not the plate umpire
Angel still stinks as an umpire but this one isn’t his fault
Didnt MLB successfully argue in court that they werent discriminating against Angel Hernandez that he just sucks at his job?
Angel has such a bad rep, even if he gets a call correct, everyone will question that call.
Another question on this..isn't there supposed to be a pitch clock reset after a pitcher disengagement?
Not when the bases are empty (pitchers don't get free disengagements in OBR when there are no runners). With runners, yes there's a reset (well, this particular example would be a balk too, but assuming it was a legal disengagement, yes the clock resets).
At a minimum, GT should've been able to reestablish eye contact with the pitcher after he stepped back onto the rubber.
You seem to be giving a lot of benefit to the doubt that a professional ump behind the plate can’t see both feet of a pitcher in a MLB game, in this context, then switch to a corner ump position, because I doubt there’s any obstruction.
How many games a year do you work, Anthony?
Angel should be fired I bet mlb is waiting for any reason to fire this guy
We don't run other officials down. I could care less what people (or anyone on this channel) think. He made the show. If there's an issue, you get together post game and talk about it. This is why you folks and others are making us hemorrhage officials right now.
Angel is the worst umpire in Baseball. I have watched many of his games on TV and as a Season Ticket Holder for the Royals I have also see many of his games in Kansas City. I have said that he needed to be FIRED 10 years ago
he didnt actually step off the rubber he put his foot on the rubber then back to the edge of the rubber.
"Well, I guess I'm doing another Angel video". No offense, but I'd get used to it..... dude's terrible
no he really isn't i am so tired of sitting jerks umpiring who has no clue of game insulting a guy doing his job yet not once have anyone you complain about those other umpires
Even without the step-off/step-on deal, it was still an outrageously bad strike call. The umpire union is to blame for keeping this loser employed and diminishing the integrity of the game.
Angel Hernandez stupidity is spreading throughout the whole crew.
Careful, Angel Hernandez will sue you for discrimination.
I think Angel Hernandez is doing it on purpose to get attention. Otherwise why would anyone pay attention to such a shitty umpire, worst in the MLB. As the the MLB umpire union, you can tell it is a shitty organization for them to keep such an unprofessional poor performer in the game. No intergrity or class. Just crap org.
It looks like Gleyber didn't stay engaged after the pitcher stepped off the rubber. Should he have?
Angel sure knows how to keep the baseball world abuzz.
Torres certainly has a reason to complain. He saw something that all of the umpires missed. However, why didn't he wait for the umpire to call for time or call a balk? Torres standing up before a call caused the ball to arrive at belt level which looks like a strike.
A balk is impossible with bases empty. It was an illegal pitch. Award batter one ball.
I saw that too. Angel Hernandez continues to prove he’s the worst umpire in MLB history.
Found the guy who didn't watch the video!
@sam.houseworth Taken as a standalone comment, your response sort of means nothing. His is true on its own.
Additionally, it was a bad call, so your comment especially makes no sense.
Pay Angel to retire early...
Angel Hernandez is the Julio Rodriguez of umpires…trash
So why is the strike zone adjusted for batter?
Wouldn’t it make sense to just have one strike zone for everyone?
This has always bothered me, but I feel like there is a good reason I’m missing.(besides the argument people are different heights)
The rule is the between the shoulders and the pants and right above the knee. So that varies per batter, such as Judge vs Altuve. That's been the case for as long as I can remember, and I'm barely even a baseball fan.
Because they ARE different heights. If you have a batter that is 5'7" it would be unfair to him to have the same top of the zone as a batter who is 6'7". It's much more difficult to hit a ball shoulder high or higher.
@@srellison561 so what’s the logic for pitchers of different heights? They have to adjust for the batter?
There are plenty of sports that don’t make weird player to player adjustments and it seems to work out. I really feel like baseball has a bunch of weird grey area rules that cause a lot of problems.
Rule book defines the strike zone. The lower limit is at the hollow below the batters knee. The upper limit is the midpoint between the top of the pant and the shoulders. This is judged as the batter is prepared to strike at the pitch.
It would probably be easier for the computerized zone if the rule book said something like 12 inches off the ground to 42 inches off the ground.
@@MwD676 this is kind of what I was getting at. If we want “accurate” officiating it might help to create one standard for strikes and balls.
That is not a strike. Bs. The strike zone isn't when a player is standing next to the plate, it's the zone when a batter is in their batting position. Angel is wrong on everything here. No, he didn't get the zone right.
My view, a batter, with no-one on base, should simply be ready to bat.
