- The Steens Mountain Wilderness lies within one of the most remote regions within the lower 48. Sparsely populated with few roads, the desert area where Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon all come together is a special place to ride and explore. The Steens area stands tall here.
The wide open landscapes and a contrasting geography of dried lakebeds and glacial valleys are reason enough to make this a destination ride. But it's the history that catches you and draws you in. It's palpable here. It's a place where pioneers, old and new, have come to make their mark and earn their fortunes. We do our best to get off the beaten-path and explore, meeting interesting people and hearing their stories.
We had a once in a lifetime experience with a heard of Mustangs too, making the Steens an adventure we will never forget! So, come along!
Awesome video, I love seeing the wild horses.
Thank you John. It was super cool. I’ve never gotten that close to them before!
This is epic....what a journey !!!
Thank you! Is this a place you’ve traveled to? I think when I visit again, will definitely try to stay at the old hotel. I think it only has 8 rooms-like going back in time! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Wow, what a beautiful time of year to go. Thanks for the educational additions, its a delightful presentation.
Thank you Charles! I really appreciate your kind words. I love exploring this region and although I’ve lived around here my entire life, I’m constantly discovering something new.
This summer my brother and I are going to ride the abandoned section of the transcontinental railroad north of the great salt lake, from Wells to almost Ogden. I’m really looking forward to this ride!
Really appreciate the great voice over, thanks for sharing the adventure and knowledge, cheers!
I really appreciate your feedback! I watch a lot of similar videos and I’m frustrated they visit interesting places but never share the history or story behind it all. Glad you liked it!
Great video! The scenery out there looks beautiful
Thanks Zach!
What a great video. Makes me want to go explore! Thank you for sharing!
😊
Great video guys! Thanks for the adventure! 😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow!! Great video John. Spectacular scenery and glad to see you enjoying it. Must say, you videography, presentation, and narration are quite professional and impressive. Well done!!
Wow! Thanks Doug! When are you going to head out and join me? 😃
@@johnhgarrett I would tomorrow!! What an amazing adventure it would be. I’ve dreamed of hunting elk & mule deer in Idaho for years. Hopefully Clay comes through & a few of these bucket list items can begin to be checked off.
Very cool, looks like a beautiful ride.
Thank you Brian. It was super fun. It’s an area that’s under everyone’s radar. Def worth exploring if you get the chance.
Looks like fun and beautiful scenery. I need to get out more......lol 😅
Have fun Kinley 👍 ❤
Thanks!
Great video!!!
Thanks Chica!
Great job @John Garrett ... I love how you make these rides look both educational AND fun! I know your brother enjoys your skill at pulling these video memories together.
We just visited this area, it was beautiful. Really enjoyed your history on this trip!
Thank you! It’s beautiful country for sure. Can’t wait to go back!
Great video John! The colors were amazing. I’ve been through that area several times and it never gets old. One of my first rides was to do the Steen Mountain Loop. Got there in early June only to find the road not open. Stayed at the French Glen Hotel. Like going back in time 150 yrs. Just realized I’ve already seen this. It’s just as good the 2nd time!
Lol! I remember! You and I talked a little bit about it, so I’m glad you enjoyed it a second time!
Great job
Hey thank you! Would love to make more of these but life sorta gets in the way.
This is so well done! Thank you so much! We will be camping for a week in September out there and this was very helpful!
Thank you Tiffany! We missed out because we went in the spring and the full loop was closed. You should be able to make the loop and hopefully see a lot more than we did. It’s great country-I think you’re going to really like it!
@@johnhgarrett Thank you so much! I"m not sure how you did the map, but it was great and very helpful! We are Oregonians and have never been to that area!
@@tiffanykullgren3830 hi Tiffany! I wanted to see if you made it to the Steens in September! Hopefully the loop was open and you were able to see all of it!
Great vid my son and i just road the south steens loop a week ago loop still closed 23 miles up bummer snow we ride old bmw gs,s we will go back later and ride it i love riding east oregon freaking awesome see you out there some were
Happy Fathers Day, David! What a great thing to share with your son! Probably July before it’s fully open? You’re the third rider I know of that’s attempted the loop but not been able to complete it because it was still seasonally closed. Crazy!
Super glad you enjoyed it!
Great job guys on the documenting your trip.
A group of us went down there a few years back. we stayed at the Frenchglen Inn, it was a fantastic place.
That's the year we had a heavy snow and up at the gate there was still five feet of snow at the end of June. So unfortunately we didn't get to go all the way over. We did ride down to Fields Station for lunch, got some fuel rode the Alvarod desert we also stopped by the Diamond Ranch and that was pretty interesting, then continued on to the round Barn and back to frenchglen Inn
Thanks Gary! How was the Inn and the food? Would you do that again? I really want to go back and do the ride again, this time when the loop is open, but if I do, the old Inn looked pretty cool. I’m sure it’s a bit primitive by modern standards, but that’s okay!
My brother and I just did the Transcontinental Railroad National Historic Byway just two weeks ago. I’ll have a video on that one coming out soon. But, talking about snow, Wells, NV (where we essentially started) is at the base of the Ruby Mountains. Holy crap there’s a ton of snow in the Ruby’s! There is a mountain town called Lamoile (sp?) we want to ride to not far from there-doubt that it happens this year!
Thanks for watching the Video Gary! Cheers!
@@johnhgarrett the food, Inn and service was great. I'm going to do it again.
Thank you
Thanks for taking to watch it! Really glad you enjoyed it. Take care!
This was so cool, great job John with the story line, views, history, etc. Got to make this trip!!!
Thanks Kiooer!
Really enjoyed your video! Been there a couple of times but I've never seen it so green!! When was your trip?
Oh man, you caught me! We did the ride in early June last year. Early enough that not everything had turned brown-and as you could see, the passes were still closed. But…I guess I might have adjusted color a bit? Lol.
I think you live in CA don’t you? I really enjoy your videos! I feel badly that I don’t comment more often….. just watched your ride into WY… can’t believe you did that solo.
John
Thanks John! I’ve wanted to do the Steens Loop for a long time. Stayed at the French Glen Hotel a few years back but it was May and the road was still closed. Went through Fields and the Alvord a few years back on a great trip. Looking forward to watching your Owyhee River video. You have a nice easy style. Great to watch. Keep ‘em coming. 👍
I really appreciate you saying that about my videos. I think that’s why I like yours as well, but you’re doing a lot more of them-and a lot more ambitious rides than I have been able to do lately. I’ve not done a solo ride of any length but I think that would be a really great way to recharge-so much time to reflect!
I told my brother the next time we visit the Steens again that we need to book a room at the hotel in Frenchglen. I’m sure that’s a journey back in time.
Looking forward to your next vid, too! Where are you headed next?
My friend John and I are headed to lava beds National Monument then southern Oregon for some off road and camping Mid May if the weather cooperates. You and your brother would really enjoy the French Glen Hotel. As I recall they had like 5 rooms with the bathroom down the hall. Food was outstanding! And it is like stepping back in time! 👌
Been there on wildfires dozens of times. A whole lot of nothing burns.
@@NormanSilver Hi Norm-yes, lots of nothin’ for sure. For me, that’s what makes it great. In the Yukon and AK now, still traveling on my bike and still experiencing a whole bunch of nothing for hundreds and hundreds of miles.
Thank you for your fire service. Seriously. My daughter works fires as well and I couldn’t be more proud of her. 👍
@@johnhgarrett I worked on the Chugach in '57 and '58. Lived in Spennard.
@@NormanSilver Wow! Okay, that was a while ago and a touch before my time (I’m 63). Still, thanks for your work! Did you stay doing fire work for your career?
It's only a desert when it's dry. It can be pretty wet. Late 80's it was full on lake.
I’m certain. I was told you don’t want to go onto the Alvord when it’s wet!
