Quiet Supermicro 846 - How to make Supermicro 846 Quiet | Silent Server Fan Upgrade

  • In this video, I show the upgrade process I took to replace system fans in a Supermicro 846 Server Chassis with new quiet fans, replace the power supply, and replace the existing thermal paste. The new fans were purchased from Supermicro. The new power supply was purchased from eBay. I picked up the thermal paste from my local Micro Center.
    I decided to take the project on since moving to a 1 bedroom apartment. The noise level of this server was just too annoying to have in my kitchen. By upgrading the power supply and the internal fans, I cut the decibel level of the server in half. While performing this upgrade, I decided it would be a good idea to replace the exiting thermal paste and clean out the internal components and drives.
    Parts purchased for this upgrade:
    1x Thermal Paste (Optional) - amzn.to/3avtC21
    5x Supermicro 80mm Hot-Swappable Middle Axial Fan (FAN-0104L4) - amzn.to/2DPli1r
    1x Supermicro PWS-920P-SQ 920W 1U - amzn.to/312DsFv
    Before the upgrade the server was producing noise at about 80 db. After the upgrade, the noise level was dropped to about 45 db.

    Thanks for the tip with the FAN-0104L4!
    This is way better than jury-rigging Noctua 120mm in place of the OG fan wall, because you can still make effective use of the air-guiding baffle.
    A wall of Noctua just blows all around the CPUs with only a small volume of air actually cooling them, unless you can jury-rig a custom baffle as well.
    I'm definitely going with this approach!

    Nice vid. FYI, that looks to be a SAS2 backplane. Should be BPN-SAS2-846EL1. For anyone else reading this, and if you are leaving the stock SM board, log into your IPMI and just turn your fan speed down :)

    These fan housings should be capable of housing any standard 80mm fans including noctua's, that's the only housing type though from Supermicro that this can be done with unfortunately, others have a plastic notch that will prevent many other fans to fit in - you would need to replace or modify the fan connector though.
    Another crazy way would be to find the formfactor and size equivalents of different specification fans, they are definitely out there, so many types of them from so many manufacturers - which is a problem, can easily spend days looking just through single manufacturer catalog and trying to find on internet various options which are actually available for purchase.

    Supermicro chassis also usually have a fan control option in the BIOS. I've utilized that on all my Supermicro builds. Dell has gotten pretty good about fan noise since their second generation 720s as well. In addition, it is very rare to see the load split 50/50 on the power supplies - you'll more often see something like 80/20, 70/30, etc. depending on your setup. It tends to fluctuate between power supplies as well; so, one power supply isn't always carrying a majority of the load.

      @rhyspowell4036  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the comment - I played with the settings in the IPMI controller and wasn't happy with the results. The quietest mode available was "Standard" and that was still too loud. I know the lights out controller isn't the newest, but I did update the firmware on it and the motherboard, with no improvement on the noise levels, and no new features in the management.
      Ultimately the most noise reduction came from the replacement of the PSU. I appreciate your correction on load distribution, as I was speaking casually in the video and could have led to some misinformation.

    • @rhyspowell4036
      @rhyspowell4036  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CPU Temperatures before were in the 50C range. After, they floated between 60C - 70C. This is why I went ahead and purchases active CPU coolers and replaced them later on (See the other video about that) Once I replaced the heatsinks with active ones and reconfigured my IPMI controls, the CPUs don't exceed 60C even under full load.

    I'm looking to do this with my 847. You said in a comment below that you needed to upgrade to active cooling for the CPUs. What about the HDDs, what'd those temps look like after you switched?

    • @rhyspowell4036
      @rhyspowell4036  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My HDDs temps went up a bit, but not anything terrible. The only drives that run hot are the internally mounted SSDs and that is because of the ambient heat from being mounted on top of the PSUs. IIRC the drives temp increased by like 3-5 degress F.
