The song is over 1200 years old. I doubt the exact original exists in written form. I also don’t think this is Allison. I have never heard her have a quivering vibrato like this. That is neither here nor there I guess. It is still one of the best hymns ever written.

The best version of this song I've yet heard! I've been waiting for the right voice to perform it since I first heard a short clip on the tv show "Without a Trace" about 4 years ago. It never occurred to me that Allison Krause could be that singer!
Personally, if it wasn't for Alison's singing, I'd vote this down too. Because it is audio from a funeral service for the teen son of a local pastor. A friend of her I think.To take this footage, put up only the audio and not a mention of the occasion seems, to me, to be rather disrespectful.

Job is my favorite book, at least, thus far. but in both the other references they only "say." I had just heard a sermon that discussed this in detail before I made the post, as if singing was a thing God reserved for men, as we, in Christ, are above them in heaven. However even if it is so that the angels only "say," what a magnificent, booming voice they must have...
I've been an Alison fan since she was about 17, before most people ever heard of her. Yes, I am one of the "she has the voice of an angel" people. That said, she was not in best form on this effort. She was off-key in several places, and her voice lacked the usual angelic sweetness that it usually has. Maybe she had a cold or something. Still, a sub-par Alison is better than just about anyone else.
Alison has such an angelic voice. Live is always fraught with techno perils, as you catch in this rendition. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the words and the singer's talent. The tech guys could do better if she had worked with them before the performance...??

Sorry Ms Krauss but Van's the Man with this one! None better than his version backed by the Chieftains. Alison should have put more energy into it. It is a hymn of hope and faith confidently beseeching God to strengthen a person's resolve to face the vicissitudes that life may bring.
This version is a living definition of the word 'vapid' - just like any Bryan Ferry performance. Van the Man's version, on the contrary, actually moves an atheist like me.

+David Lawler Hi Dave, I stumbled across this one this evening. It's my favorite hymn of any by a long way. Alison Krauss is a beautiful singer but I agree she doesn't do it justice. I checked the van the man version on your suggestion and have to admit it leaves me a bit cold too. Not sure I can come up with a superlative version though so will keep looking. I think singing it in church feels best rather than listening to some accomplished singer covering it. However, I feel wrong opposing someone who can use a word as beautiful as vicissitudes. I've looked it up and it's going to be my word of the week!

Love the version from the film 'ash Wednesday'
I've been an Alison fan since she was about 17, before most people ever heard of her. Yes, I am one of the "she has the voice of an angel" people. That said, she was not in best form on this effort. She was off-key in several places, and her voice lacked the usual angelic sweetness that it usually has. Maybe she had a cold or something. Still, a sub-par Alison is better than just about anyone else.
Anyone know where I could find the Guitar music for this? It's one of the best I've heard in my opinion.

Alison has such an angelic voice. Live is always fraught with techno perils, as you catch in this rendition. It doesn't take away from the beauty of the words and the singer's talent. The tech guys could do better if she had worked with them before the performance...??

Sorry Ms Krauss but Van's the Man with this one! None better than his version backed by the Chieftains. Alison should have put more energy into it. It is a hymn of hope and faith confidently beseeching God to strengthen a person's resolve to face the vicissitudes that life may bring.

+David Lawler Hi Dave, I stumbled across this one this evening. It's my favorite hymn of any by a long way. Alison Krauss is a beautiful singer but I agree she doesn't do it justice. I checked the van the man version on your suggestion and have to admit it leaves me a bit cold too. Not sure I can come up with a superlative version though so will keep looking. I think singing it in church feels best rather than listening to some accomplished singer covering it. However, I feel wrong opposing someone who can use a word as beautiful as vicissitudes. I've looked it up and it's going to be my word of the week!
