    If you ever had to make a peninsula table or counter top, the second or third cut would be perfect for that with the rounded end and grain. Love your videos

  • @mikesmicroshop4385
    @mikesmicroshop4385 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt if you put a roller out in front of that side blade guide you keep moving and have it set to keep the guide a couple of inches away from the log you would only have to move it once when you start the cut! Make it like a 6 inch roller so that it is less likely to hang up on the undulations of a log.

    Love your saw mill and slabing. You should look for the highly desired mango wood with closed grain as it has great grain, birds eye, and crotch grain. Made our kitchen countertops and Island out of Mango wood (150year old tree from the Big Island in 2014 - now spot is under lava).

    I haven't much time in making lumber but for a while I cut ties and cants. You don't run across much stuff like that in fir trees but then the stuff was for the railroad mostly. When I say that you don't I should clarify but just once in blue moon... out of the blue.. a hardened pitch that looks like glass and yet is workable comes. It will make your day. Well mom had me cut down a cherry tree by the house, it was a very old tree of some size and since she wanted it out I cut it into eight foot long and the limbs into whatever I thought may look good. I toted it into the back of my pu and when dad wasn't around, worked it up in any and all different sizes thick slabs like you were doing and the went to the wood shop for the high school and before I could say much, he made me a very generous offer, a work in process sorta. All the big limbs I cut into two inch stuff by that school teachers recommending, words are not coming easy for me right now cause my brother just past away about thirty minutes ago and I need to keep myself busy so this is how I'm doing it but back to... I took the thick limb slabs to a luber outlet, the scaled the wood best way possible for usable cuts and I made good on that as well. I never told dad, just put the money in the bank and when time was right gave him a cut on it. I made enough to get me a lot newer truck to drive... paid for and healthy pay on my place that I was making out of wood that would not make ties for dad and got out of his house a lot quicker. I was fifteen then and I turned seventy two last friday. My brother turned seventy in march so thanks for listening. Very nice video. I kinda follow but just not steady as should but I did subscribe a long time ago. I don't put much time on computer but like I said enjoyed your video... brought back some memories... good ones

    That is some nice cherry. Do not get much of that in Texas. We have some choke cherry but a sixteen inch tree would be on the large size. Like the electric motor on your mill a lot quieter than my gasoline motor. Keep sawing and discovering.

    I'm jealous of your cut times. I use an old delta with a 10" re-saw to mill small logs on a sled. The 3/4 HP motor slows me to about 30 minutes to cut a 3' log with a 1/2" blade.

    I noticed in all my years of logging Cherry trees seemed to be the ones that were always fallen. Never saw a standing dead cherry.
    They do make good firewood.
    Cherry trees also had a lot of gum resin.

    • @Kurgosh1
      @Kurgosh1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. I'm in Ohio and we have a lot of standing dead cherry trees. Even spoke to an arborist about having a couple removed from our property and he took a look at them and basically told us that it wasn't necessary because the trees were stable as is, and said that was typical for cherry. Might be a different subspecies I guess.

    Three questions:
    What’s the purpose of all that water after cut? Seems like extra water on a fresh cut wood would prone it to crack as it dries.
    Why aren’t you using wedges between boards following the blade? All that weight of wood onto the blade creates a bit of binding and tension on motor, no?
