No BeeGees were harmed during the filming of this tv show, despite scooting backwards on the slippery floor, getting crowded on stage right, and singing Chuck's wild and crazy song! It is cool to see all these guys on stage together. You sure have an eye and ear for what's going on with the guitar. Thanks so much for sharing with us.
FUN indeed!!!! What lyrics and what charismatic iteration between Berry and the Bee Gees! The "good old days" certainly do not feel so "OLD"! Thanks Fil!
This is a collaboration that I didn't know existed or could have imagined would work so well! This was a lot of fun to watch. I love seeing collaborations like this, when the artists may not be in the same genre, but you can see that the music transcends all of that, and they just respect and enjoy one another's talent and it just works. Thanks for this!
Another great video and analysis! I remember watching Chuck coming onto the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. He was the first act and was only supposed to play one or two songs. There were three other guests booked on the show (the second guest was Robin Williams), but everyone was so into the music that all the guests gave their time over to Chuck and he played the entire show. It was one of the greatest things I've seen on unscripted TV.
I don't think I ever thought of this song being risque back then. But Wow! What a performance! And, the BeeGees. OMG!!! I had the same pair of jeans that Chuck is wearing here! Music was so much fun back then and everyone danced. Thank you, Fil for your great analysis.
I broke all land speed records in liking this video and tuning in to see your analysis, Fil! Thanks you so much. Love anything with the Bee Gees. LOL! It was such a fun video to watch!
Holy Cow!!The hilarity factor was out of the ball park with the Bee Gees' participation!! I thoroughly enjoyed watching your wide-grinning analysis and their performance with Chuck Berry. This Midnight Special episode is one for the ages.
Chuck Berry always stayed true to his form, this song Reelin' and Rockin' is one of those Chuck Berry songs he could change the lyrics to at the spur of the moment live and still sound great. You could tell the Gibbs brothers were having a blast up on stage with the groove Chuck Berry was laying down.
Great memories of the 50’s, 60’s....I am beginning to realize just how much fun I had with this kind of music and how appreciative of the time of my teen years.. Thanks for the fun and expert comments. ❤
This is a huge & very delightful surprise, to see this oh so excellent & fun collaboration with Chuck & my most favorite & idolized group, The Bee Gees. I love how they are all having so much fun together. Chuck is obviously a positive influence & inspiration to the brothers Gibb, because look at em GO!, dancing like I've never seen them dance before. I wonder if they've recorded any more videos together? Your joyful & skilled analysis ads even more to love. To sum it all up: A good time was had by all😅
Hi Fil, this was a fun analysis video, I just love Chuck Berry and The Bee Gees! It was great to see you tonight and I hope all is well with you! Take care! ROCK!! 🎸🤘😘
Me, too, Tammy, me, too! If you haven't checked our guys out singing a Beatles medley from the "Midnight Special", promise me you will. You won't be disappointed. I really wish Fil would do an analysis on it!
I know Chuck Berry as the Father of Rock n Roll thanks to the John Lennon, but this performance was definitely past my bedtime when it aired originally. 🤣 So thanks for introducing me to the delectable combination of The Bee Gees and Chuck Berry. Mr. Berry was 6' 2" and had long fingers according to a quick online search. Glad to see you looking well! 🖤🤘
Always loved Midnight Special but I don’t think I ever saw this collaboration. It’s truly Chuck Berry doing his thing. The Bee Gees are an interesting mix. What gets me when I see music from back then is how the audience can just sit there. So glad they finally got into it! What an enjoyable performance. Thanks Fil!
I took my then wife, who wasn’t a fan of Chuck, to see him live at Batley Variety Club, in the 70s. £1 to get in. He did 2 shows, 6pm to 9pm and 10pm to 1am. He opened with Roll over Beethoven, because, he said, he always liked to start with a Beatles song. I don’t know what time the second house got in, because it was nearly 11 pm when we left. Near the end of his set people tried to get on the stage, the bouncers were stopping them, till Chuck stepped in, and let them up. They were dancing all round him, till he eventually stopped. As he left the stage, he turned and said “THANK YOU BEATLES, THANK YOU ROLLING STONES”. Great night out, and even my wife enjoyed it. It’s a shame now, that people hardly get to see the big stars anymore. In the 60s and 70s it was common place to see the big stars in small clubs, like Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, for a lot less than £1. Yardbirds, Stones (52p), the Move, Kinks. Live is definitely best. One more thing, I believe Chuck travelled with just his guitar, and left it to the venue, to provide the amp and, a backing group that knew his songs.
You know what, I had no idea that the Bee Gees overlapped with Chuck Berry! This was loads of fun to listen to and watch. It’s always interesting hearing a guitarist’s perspective on other guitar players, as well. Thanks, Fil!🤘
@@Bookhart2 That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing that info. Indeed, two distinct styles…which made their performance together so surprising and fun. Some mutual admiration going on…talented performers, all!
My dad brought me to my 1st Rock Concert in July 1964, 4 months after I turned 7. On the bill were: Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard and Fats Domino.
I was once on stage with Chuck in Wolverhampton Friday 13th November 1992 when he sang this as his last song of the night. He did the duck walk coming right at me, I quickly moved out of the way.. he went past turned around and did it again. When he was centre stage I walked out there and put my arm around him. Memories I’ll always treasure. Nowadays it would be all over TH-cam the next day but sadly I don’t even have a photo!! 🥲
The Midnight Special is such a treasure trove of music. Your big grin says it all Fil! Found an episode where The Bee Gees did covers of Beatles song that is SO good.
Never seen this one with Bee Gees & Chuck! So much fun to watch. Chuck Berry was an original. Go Johnny Go with The Bee Gees. Thanks for analysis Fil !
Great analysis as always Fil. Chuck Berry had a load of suggestive lyrics that drove parents crazy but as kids we loved them and seeing him perform was always a special treat.
I realized just last weekend that My left hand reaches more keys on the piano. I instantly attributed that to guitar; the right hand was just pick all those years. Fil is a gem.
I remember Chuck having a concert in town and he had the local band play with him... they had no preshow practice and didn't know the songs he was planning to play until he started the song. I'm told they sounded great... wish I would've been there.
I've read things about his later years when the musical stars of the day wanted to play with him, and he'd 'misbehave', for fun (?) There was an all-star concert honoring him which included Keith Richards, Springsteen, etc and he'd suddenly change up the key of the songs partway through, just to mess with them when they couldn't keep up. . He also punched Keith Richards in the face once
You should have a look at the Bee Gees Beatles medley from The Midnight Special. Their voices and harmonies shone! Lovely! Minnie Ripperton's performance of "Loving You" was amazing. So glad the videos of these shows are being released. So many great artists and strange combinations of artists. One amazing combination was Van Morrison, Carlos Santana, Doctor John, Etta James, Tom Scott and George Benson.
It's so great to see you relaxed and truly enjoying getting into your review of Chuck Berry and the BeeGee's collaborative performance. Now there’s a Bees Gees performance I’ve never seen. Thanks, Fil. It was fun seeing it. And I’d never noticed Mr. Berry’s hands while he played. Interesting.
This is only the second time I’ve ever seen a Standing ovation on the Midnight Special. [ Focus with their Hocus Pocus is the only other time I’ve seen]. This is a killer performance. Chuck Barry played at a restaurant/ bar/ club in St.Louis, called Blueberry Hill - University City. “The Loop”. I grew up very near there, and had been there a number of times. Chuck NEVER disappointed ‼️ Cool video ‼️ 📻🙂

Always lovely to see your videos and this was an eye opener. I remember seeing a film of little richard,,sang i think..tutti fruitti twice coz it was so quick and such fun! Magic ❤
Chuck NEVER disappointed ‼️
Cool video ‼️
📻🙂
That was so much fun, and accompanied by an instructive analysis.
Thanks Fil.
I really enjoyed it.
👍💜
Someone should mention the amazing piano performance that really enhanced the overall sound.
Bo Diddley has a signature sound too.
Berry's style/sound seemed like a collab stretch for B Gs, but with their vocal flexibility the performance worked.
Hi FIL. Good day and selections. 👍❤
You seem very happy and relaxed. More than usual. I hope the bit of time to yourself has been beneficial. We all need time for ourselves. This was such a great video. Thank you.
Just came across this gem.
I’m a Bee Gees fan and don’t believe I’ve ever heard Robin using his chest voice.
The difference is pronounced.❤
It is cool to see someone who was instrumental in starting the rock genre.
🤘
That was a lot of fun. Thanks Fil!
My range of musical tastes is extensive and I love old Rock and Roll and Disco! I have the greatest hits CDS of both of these amazing artists!
I got to meet him . He was a very nice man.
❤
"Chuck is in the wrong place on his guitar but he just keeps on playing because it doesn't matter. Because it's about having a good time. Nobody really cares if you mess stuff up when your having this kind of fun because it's not an exam ... it's music." Oh, man. That is what I miss. Always a good video when Fil plays and sings.
Absolutely fantastic and thank you
I really enjoyed this review and performance! Thanks.
How wonderful. Thanks for bringing this.
Wow, I'd never seen this. Thank you for this analysis. I enjoyed this. Thank you. :)
Beautiful ❤
Great to see you smile :) Fun video and a great song.
So fun!!❤
Fantastic... Thanks
us mortals need a 3/4 sized guitar to do those chords. I think there were a few piano players that had a natural wider spread too
