David Crosby’s voice was ethereal here! His guitar playing is superb. Song gives me goosebumps, so peaceful and relaxing. Love the crowds back in the day. Everyone looking, not talking and taking it all in with their ears & eyes. Read, this song was written about Davids girlfriend at the time, who had passed in a car wreck while taking their cat to the vet. What a remembrance for her, so darn gorgeous❤️🔥 Love Davids fringy suede jacket, it reminds me of my beloved 70’s moccasins. R.I.P.🕊️🤍🤍

this is a beautiful song! I had such a crush on David Crosby when I was a girl, I wanted to be older so I could be a hippie and wear cool leather jackets and hang out with CSN&Y, to this day I still listen to their music it takes me back in time...thank you
My favorite David Crosby song. So beautiful. The harmonies of Crosby, Stills and Nash were beyond belief. RIP David, thanks for all the beautiful music you gave us over the years🙏🏻👍❤️
David Crosby's soft voice and gentle strumming was like a breath of fresh air after a rainy day. How lovey the song Guinevere and the subtle harmony was like brushing your hand against velvet ; so soft and soothing. May David Crosby Rest in Peace. Lovely tribute and analysis Fil - So well done.
So sad to hear of David Crosby's passing away. He started out in the group the "Byrds" before becoming part of CS&N. I have always loved their sound & had their albums. They were one of the folk rock supergroups of the 60's-70's. David wrote & co-wrote some great songs such as "Eight Miles High", "Guinnevere", "Long Time Gone", "Wooden Ships", "Déjà Vu" etc.
I named my daughter a variation of Guinevere. I love this song, but every eulogy about David starts with "great musician, but..." Quite the personality. Thanks for concentrating on his music.

💔Amazing tender moving performance by best friends. ♡ This September 11 1970 performance is near the first anniversary of the tragic death of Croz’s longtime girlfriend Christine Hinton, who was killed in a car accident on September 30, 1969, the same day the CSN debut album, which including Guinnevere, went gold. The second verse is written about Christine. At the Waldorf, SF concert, i attended, in 1983, he introduces Guinnevere: “Now, this is another one that we should be quiet about. This girl isn’t around anymore. And this is for her and this is for you chump changes. If you love anybody, if you got anybody you really love - think about it. Really love ‘em now as much as you can. Now. You don’t know how long you’re gonna have them, you know.” Graham: after Croz identified Christine’s body, "Croz never was the same.” CROZ: ”He’s right. I never was.” In a Rolling Stone interview, Crosby remarked: "That is a very unusual song, it's in a very strange tuning (EBDGAD) with strange time signatures. It's about three women that I loved. One of whom was Christine Hinton - the girl who got killed who was my girlfriend - and one of whom was Joni Mitchell, and the other one is somebody that I can't tell. It might be my best song.” The first verse was for Nancy Ross, Croz’s girlfriend when he was with the Byrds. At the same ’83 concert, Croz said: Carry Me - a song of transcendence. It’s for Nancy. She’s the girl i wrote the second verse about. She’s here someplace.” th-cam.com/video/EbiTeNLmvvI/w-d-xo.html - Croz concert 5.22.83 Waldorf, SF
A perfect choice for the tribute in several ways. It highlighted something that was discussed in the LS last night. It demonstrates the incredible skill it takes to compose, play & sing. Lastly, David Crosby himself was quoted in Rolling Stone in 2008 as saying, "This might be my best song" He said, "It was a very unusual song, it's in a strange tuning with strange time signatures." That is precisely what makes the song so cool. If you close your eyes you could be listening to the castle troubadours at Camelot. 🖤🤘
Good choice indeed but the most unusual Crosby song is one of his first, from 1964, The Airport Song. Stunning that the first time I heard it couldn't tell if it was a woman or a man. So jazzy in the sense it was almost a blueprint for space-age lounge music. th-cam.com/video/1IIWmmRvGUc/w-d-xo.html
⛵ CROZ - "I did some of my very best work being subtle, moving the middle part around in internal shifts that kept it happening," he wrote. Crosby's ocean-clear tenor meshed seamlessly with the voices of Stills and Nash in hushed and haunting ways, particularly on his own "Guinnevere." His songwriting contributions also pushed the band in new directions - in particular, the rhythmic cadences of "Déjà Vu" and the loose arrangements and boho instrumental tone of "Wooden Ships." npr/obit
Mr. Crosby..a true king of dissonance... never took predictable paths with chords, harmony/melody. One of my all-time 🎶🎼🎵 men, bless... thanks for this, Wings of Pegasus 👍👍👍🎸
Thank you for helping me understand why I heard such interesting tones in his voice! I wondered about that the other night when listening to the two last vocal tracks on his 71 album If Only I Could Remember My Name. They align every cell i n my body and give me chills!
I've seen CSN & CSNY many times & the loss of David was so heartbreaking to me. I have a sister who's 11 years older than me & she introduced me to such great music. The same bands I saw as a kid are the same bands I'm still seeing in concert. That just shows how great this Era was for music. You will be missed David but your music will always live on. Thanks for this amazing video Fil. Some of the greatest harmonies🎸🤘🩵

I love this particular performance. They also performed one of David's earlier sailing songs Lee Shores. I have always been fascinated with how Graham, coming from a premiere British invasion band to David Crosby and Stephen Stills folkier somewhat American sounding environment, which ending up being the perfect musical marriage.
That is an incredibly mesmerizing performance. Crosby's guitar playing is so precise yet he does it effortlessly hardly even glancing at the neck of the guitar. There vocal blend is magical !
The two of them were the pure harmony of the group. Crosby was such an excellent guitarist. I seen them 5 times in Michigan over the years. Just a superb show every time. if only I could remember my name
True singer/songwriters who were masters of their instruments and who could produce such magic for listeners is what I miss the most. I don’t think I fully appreciated their talents at the time; I thought music (and talent) like this would go on forever.
I've seen David Crosby several times over the years starting with the Byrds. When my son took me to a CSN concert and I felt like they were playing just for me. It was an unforgettable experience. I don't play guitar, even so, it is very enjoyable to witness your expertise on analyzing our greats musically. As always, thank you. It's always difficult to process loss; especially of an era. Enjoy your youth. 💜🎶
In the last 12 months, I discovered David Crosby's 4 last albums (Sky Trails, Here If You Listen, The Lighthouse, For Free) and kinda became a massive fan. Not being aware that he was ill, his death came as a shock.
I urge everyone to explore the genius of Croz outside of the Byrds and CSN (and sometimes "Y") - his solo catalog is brilliant, and too often overlooked - check it out, starting with "If I Could Only Remember My Name," through "Croz," and "Lighthouse." He was a remarkable singer songwriter in his own right, and his music will, thankfully, live on. Rest well and in peace, David "Croz" Crosby. You will be missed.
David and Graham were so entrancing here. Their harmonies took me to another time and place. And that's what I would describe how I felt every time I heard Crosby, Stills and Nash sing. Having grown up listening to CSN, their music, with angelic harmonies and guitar, were a part of my DNA. How very fortunate I was to have seen Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 2002. David, I hope you find your wooden ship, and sail to Rock Heaven ♥️
I agree Crosby, Stills and Nash, with or without Young harmonize so well together and wrote songs that we could relate too or connect too. Lovely tribute you wrote for David Crosby. 👍😊🧡
I'm sorry. I think I'm going to need some time before I can watch this. David's death has hit me hard and I'm not ready yet. Thanks for doing this, Fil. Take care everyone.
Hi Fil, I'm glad you chose this song for your Tribute to David Crosby as it represents him and his writing so well. What a lovely Tribute you've given him too, not only through your knowledge and skill as a musician, but also through your genuineness as a man. One can clearly see the sparkle in your eyes, the joy and appreciation on your face, and can almost feel the subtle shift in your attention and the air escape your lungs as you FEEL the beauty of those vocal harmonies wrap themselves around you. May David rest in peace and I hope that wherever he is, he knows that there are millions of us who, like myself, are very pleased that he's left us with the ability to go on enjoying those beautiful harmonies for years to come. Though we've lost a vital note in the 'chord' that was Crosby, Stills and Nash, it's wonderful to share their music in tribute and celebration. Thank you again for all you do. Kim
This song always sounded a bit mystical to me. The harmonies are so beautiful and natural. Thanks, Fil, for breaking down what's happening here, as I am only able to watch and listen in awe.
You can always tell David grew up listening to jazz, can't you? One of the tragic things about his death is that he was still writing and making superb music.
Fil: That was a very nice break down of the song. I heard a sort of melancholy part, but I didn't realize it was the "detuning" of the string. I heard David detune his string in the beginning. It was FAST! He must have been a master of his guitar to know that by heart. He didn't even listen to it by strumming the strings! The singing was soft and melodic and harmonizing. The words were a love song? A stalking song? Or did the lady just leave and is being reminisced? It all goes together so well. They kept it together. I had no idea what a nice voice David Crosby had. Very sweet. Very charming very harmonious. Thank you for analyzing this video. It was a great performance. ❤
I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written, it’s so wonderfully ethereal. I especially love the way the low E string sounds in the melody, it’s like the perfect note at just the right spot.
But since I don't intend to search for it myself, I figure I at least owe you a link to these lesser-known contemporaries of CSN circa 1972: th-cam.com/video/7IhFSiGq1vI/w-d-xo.html
I would love to know where that leather jacket with the fringe is right now! Also, ya know this song is done with a special tuning "the Croz" came up with. With this tuning and his playing you get lots of dissonance but it creates a haunting, ethereal feeling. I was lucky enough to see CSN live, in concert TWICE. The most memorable thing is their FLAWLESS harmonies! They blend so perfectly with NO auto-tune or sound tricks! By the way, NICE FINGER PICKING, PHIL! You use all your right hand fingers, except the pinky, of course, and your hand position looks very relaxed and natural!! NICE!!
Guinnevere is my favorite Crosby song. So many good memories of being on the road in the late 80's with a backpack a yellow Sony Walkman and only one cassette- So Far...
Thanks Fil for covering Crosby and Nash. The music of my generation had a uniqueness with the harmonies and melodies that music has seemed to have been lost over time.
It's great to see and hear classic folk-rock performed by two of it's most notable artists. This song captures the zeitgeist of those times so perfectly. So soft and beautiful and yet with a timeless, classical feel. David Crosby was a real talent and left an indelible legacy of great music. Your video breaks down the intricacies of the performance very well. Thank you.
Thank you!! Finally someone doing one the songs that shows Croz's genius. A masterful guitar player, songwriter, and the greatest harmony singer rock has ever seen. This and Lee Shore are just stunning songs
Guinnevere (David Crosby) Guinnevere had green eyes Like yours, milady, like yours She'd walk down through the garden In the morning after it rained Peacocks wandered aimlessly Underneath an orange tree Why can't she see me? Guinnevere drew pentagrams Like yours, milady, like yours Late at night when she thought That no one was watching at all On the wall She shall be free As she turns her gaze Down the slope to the harbor where I lay Anchored for the day Guinnevere had golden hair Like yours, milady, like yours Streaming out when we'd ride Through the warm wind down by the bay Yesterday Seagulls circle endlessly, I sing in silent harmony We shall be free
Hi Fil, Such a lovely and hauntingly beautiful song! The harmonies and playing were smooth and mystical. It had a Medieval Madrigal sound to it. And you need to be bang on with notes when you sing in that style of music. A wonderful tribute to this talented and gifted man. He and his music will never be forgotten. Thank you for bringing us this awesome and heartfelt analysis…. RIP… David Crosby…. Debbie☮️
Awesome performance! David is brilliant at separating his voice completely from his guitar, as if his hands were left knowing what to do while he wandered off to sing a song. His and Graham's vocals are like 2 orchestral instruments staying in sync, yet slightly drifting into 2 different areas only to meet up again. Let me just add that tuning your guitar differently is such a joyful thing. I've been playing for more than a half a century and only within the last couple years did I experiment with different tunings. It brings you into a whole new world. As always, great upload!
Such beautiful lyrics, intricate guitar work, with soft mesmerizing harmonics...God, this is beyond good! Crosby said he based the song on his relationships with 3 separate women utilizing the story of Guinevere and King Arthur. Try finding that level of artistry in any of the current day music offerings. Brilliant masterpiece with intellect, stellar musicianship, and romantic poetry ,just look at the lyrics..this just doesn't exist today. An artist who can think, play, sing and chew gum all at the same time! This did make me cry ,but it was a happy cry! Thank you Fil, I needed this.
Crosby is also consciously (I think) moving between two to maybe six inches from the mic so as to adjust his volume without changing the timbre of his voice.
One of my all time favourite CNS ❤ I love dissonant and minor chords. So beautiful, mystical and spiritual and speak to my saddened, weary, trying to be hopeful soul ❤
Fil…..Your a great guy! I wish you all the success in the world! What a guy…….❤❤❤! Your a great man, a great musician, and a great humanitarian! Love ya buddy…..❤❤❤!
Very cool! 🤩👍 The music's atmosphere reminds me a lot of Simon & Garfunkel's version of 'Scarborough Fair', which I love, too 😊 And how have you been feeling, Fil? It appears you've meanwhile recovered from the Virus 🙂 Have a great 2023! 😀👍
Thanks for this one Fil. Felt myself going into a zone listening to this. It has a otherworldly feel similar to S&G “Scarborough Fair”. They were so incredibly gifted! RIP David🕊🌹
As a performer you know when something magical happens; when the performance hits all the right tones, melodies, nuances, and you can feel the enraptured audience hanging on each word. I love the shared glance at the end of the performance. They knew...
I can’t tell you how much I love this song-and this performance. I used to play it over and over. I thought it was like what a troubadour from the 1600s would sound like. Thank you for teaching about this beautiful song.
It's what's determined as a "dynamic" performance ! Yes, it's really sad but, like so many others who have gone before, with film, we can witness their performance forevermore.
Thanks Fil, for guiding us through that musical journey. They appear to have loved performing this song together. It is a gift that we have videos such as this to enjoy, and watching along with you greatly adds to the appreciation and enjoyment of that gift.
Intriguing (if not ironic) this analysis of the disharmonic sound achieved in a performance by Crosby and Nash. But apt in recognition of Crosby's level of artistry, technique and next level harmonies. Thanx
CS&N (and later, Y) were THE soundtrack of my teen years. I was wondering which song you would pick, Crosby has so many masterpieces. I was lucky to see Crosby & Nash live in 1977 at the Hollywood Bowl. We are so lucky to have this music well recorded, so we can listen again at any time. "We have all been here before"
Beautiful voices and guitar playing. Love the haunting quality of this song. Fil, your analysis was well done as usual. May David Crosby rest In peace.
Absolutely love your analysis of this perfomance. You pointed out some things that I must admit that I have taken for granted and now I hear this a whole different way!
I watched this video too. There were a few other songs. I think after they'd performed this one they had a little discussion on what they were going to play. As soon as David played a chord or so Graham smiled and they decided to play "A Song with No Words" or as Graham wanted to call it "A Tree with No Leaves". I'd never heard it before but so similar to the vocalisations on "Guinivere" and actually in a lot of their other work. Kind of their trademark in what made all their albums so special. But for me (recreational singer and harmony freak) it's the harmony of voices not even making words that I love so much. Thank you for the breakdown

In the last 12 months, I discovered David Crosby's 4 last albums (Sky Trails, Here If You Listen, The Lighthouse, For Free) and kinda became a massive fan. Not being aware that he was ill, his death came as a shock.
He really just got better and better and did his best work each time, right til the end. What a legacy.
“She’s Gotta Be Somewhere” is just brilliant. His son, James Raymond.
I`ve played in bands since `69 and I never found anybody that can sing like that. I`m pretty sure I never will.
When I was in college, I had a green-eyed cat that I named Guinevere after this song.
Such an ethereal, mysterious feel to this song.
Thanks, Fil. 💜
So did I!
Bella, She died. It’s a love tribute.
You always choose the best performances to analyze and for us to enjoy. Thanks. David was much loved and will be missed.
MASTERS of their art!!
Thanks Fil. Crosby and Nash were always magic together. Appreciate the breakdown of the guitar tuning.
A beautiful harmonised song. David Crosby RIP, thanks for the songs.
I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written, it’s so wonderfully ethereal. I especially love the way the low E string sounds in the melody, it’s like the perfect note at just the right spot.
Wow Fil, this really brings me back to 1970, one of my favorite years. They don’t make music like that anymore.
Oh yes they do. The fact that it's a chore to find it makes it more precious.
Beautiful vocals.
Thank you.
I was heartbroken by David's passing......
Rest in peace beautiful soul.
Thank you!! Finally someone doing one the songs that shows Croz's genius. A masterful guitar player, songwriter, and the greatest harmony singer rock has ever seen. This and Lee Shore are just stunning songs
Guinnevere (David Crosby)
Guinnevere had green eyes
Like yours, milady, like yours
She'd walk down through the garden
In the morning after it rained
Peacocks wandered aimlessly
Underneath an orange tree
Why can't she see me?
Guinnevere drew pentagrams
Like yours, milady, like yours
Late at night when she thought
That no one was watching at all
On the wall
She shall be free
As she turns her gaze
Down the slope to the harbor where I lay
Anchored for the day
Guinnevere had golden hair
Like yours, milady, like yours
Streaming out when we'd ride
Through the warm wind down by the bay
Yesterday
Seagulls circle endlessly, I sing in silent harmony
We shall be free
True talent. No need for technical wizardry to make them sound superb.
This is a wonderful tribute to my.childhood hero. Thank you for your reverence and respect and genuine appreciation for Crosby.
Hi Fil,
Such a lovely and hauntingly beautiful song!
Rest in Peace David Crosby... this has been a sad new year so far... losing mega rock icons.(Beautiful harmonies ..)
Glad to have grown up in a time when all kinds of music was popular and played on the radio. This song and performances would never get played today.
It gets played in my car every week.
David Crosby imo had one of the best voices in music. I love him. ❤
Merci encore pour cette analyse tout en finesse: David Crosby était un musicien génial, merci de lui rendre justice avec ton talent!!
I like that in the beginning, Graham sang natural and David sang high harmony and toward the end, David sang natural and Graham sang high harmony.
This is a beautiful song, I love the melody and the soft guitar. Absolutely beautiful ❤️
Fil…..Your a great guy! I wish you all the success in the world! What a guy…….❤❤❤! Your a great man, a great musician, and a great humanitarian! Love ya buddy…..❤❤❤!
Thank you, Fil 🖤
✨ David Crosby ✨
Rest in peace
RIP David🕊🌹
I'd forgotten how much I liked this song. Awesome!
Wow. Two acoustic guitars and two voices and that's it. Beautiful
As a performer you know when something magical happens; when the performance hits all the right tones, melodies, nuances, and you can feel the enraptured audience hanging on each word. I love the shared glance at the end of the performance. They knew...
Great Video !!! David was also the heart soul of the Byrds harmonies. I heard he was the vocal arranger on Turn Turn Turn.
I can’t tell you how much I love this song-and this performance. I used to play it over and over. I thought it was like what a troubadour from the 1600s would sound like.
Thank you for teaching about this beautiful song.
They were magic when they sang. Rest easy David.
Born with a guitar in his hands
It's what's determined as a "dynamic" performance !
Yes, it's really sad but, like so many others who have gone before, with film, we can witness their performance forevermore.
Thanks Fil, for guiding us through that musical journey. They appear to have loved performing this song together. It is a gift that we have videos such as this to enjoy, and watching along with you greatly adds to the appreciation and enjoyment of that gift.
This was beautiful, real live music,.Do people even understand what they are missing today?
This is such a well-crafted tune -- guitar-wise and vocally. I used to play this tune for my lovely fiancée. David Crosby (RIP) Many thanks, FIL.
Intriguing (if not ironic) this analysis of the disharmonic sound achieved in a performance by Crosby and Nash.
But apt in recognition of Crosby's level of artistry, technique and next level harmonies.
Thanx
Fabulous critique of a great performance by Nash and Crosby! Thanks!
Also enjoyed when they sang with Stephen Stills. He added grit to the harmony.
Their harmonics remind me of the Eagles, and Steely Dan but they came before. A seminal duo and with Stills Nash and company a prodigious bunch
I wish him peace. He had such a hard time fully enjoying life. I loved his music so much but the man was so troubled.
He was broken hearted by the death of his girlfriend Christine .Never fully got over it.
Absolute genius, solo or as a group they were all & are amazing musicians 💔😪
✌🏾❤️🎸
