A Kingdom Hearts Animation: Kairi's Heart

- Here it is, the finished animation. After over two years since I posted the original animatic, I've finally finished this project.
In the time since I started this project, a fair bit has happened with the Kingdom Hearts franchise:
- The manga made a comeback with a currently ongoing Kingdom Hearts III adaptation drawn by returning mangaka Shiro Amano
-The series dabbled a bit in downloadable content with Kingdom Hearts III: Re:Mind
-We got the first rhythm game in the series with Melody of Memory
-There were rumours of an animated series on Disney+ in the works(which are unconfirmed at this time)
-The entire main series is playable on modern gaming consoles(including PC and Nintendo Switch)
-And now our main character Sora has become part of one of the biggest crossovers in gaming history, Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
All this before the franchise's 20th anniversary next year in 2022. It's almost crazy to think how far this series has come. And I look forward to seeing where it goes next 😁

As established in previous updates, character animation was done in TV Paint 11, while line art, colouring and shading shown was done in Clip Studio Paint EX.
Compositing was done in DaVinci Resolve.
Any backgrounds shown are from the original Kingdom Hearts game. All characters belong to their respective owners, all I claim is the character animation. Here's some commonly asked questions/points that have been brought up. Please read before commenting:
Yes, the character design is inspired by the KH manga drawn by Shiro Amano.
This scene itself is a mix of the scene from the original game with some elements from the manga, like Riku/Ansem’s snap for example.
This is also why the dialogue is not in order beat-for-beat like the game.
Am I going to make more animations based on Kingdom Hearts? I’d certainly like to, but considering how long *this* one took, you’d be waiting a good while. For now, there’s no immediate plans, but maybe later on.
Sora’s Keyblade is the Kingdom Key in this animation because:
A) it’s the most recognisable one used in nearly all promo art with Sora,
B) it’s essentially his only form in the manga. So far, the only time a Keyblade changed form there was in 358/2 Days when Roxas’ Kingdom Key changed into Oathkeeper fighting Saïx.
Would it be possible in an anime for Sora swap keychains on the fly like Persona? Maybe. But then you’d be asking why he isn’t using certain keychains from previous adventures.

I’ve added a Japanese subtitle track. Most of it is transcribed from the original cutscene, with some small additions with the help of Google Translate.
Japanese is not my first language, so if I made any grammatical errors, please let me know.
There is an error where the sound effects only play in the left ear when listening with headphones on tablets and mobile devices, but voices can be heard in both ears. I don’t know why this happens, but it seems to play sound effects fine in both ears on the desktop.

0:57 Giving Riku's eyes that brief glint of Xehanort gold before Ansem introduces himself is a neat detail.

Yeah but i like that in the game he doesnt. Outside if 2002 Limitations ofcours it innretrospectiv is also a good way to Show Ansem isnt fully controling Riku yet. Riku is still ther.

Listening to it, it really makes you remember how young the voice actors were when it all started...
Yep the three of them were only kids or at least somewhere in their early teens.
Osment and Gallagher do a really good job overall. Panettiere is really good in this scene and a couple others but I do find her to be the worst of the three with some particularly awful delivery in places like "IT'S MY LUCKY CHARM BE SURE TO GIVE IT BACK TO ME."

I believe HJO was 14 or 13 as Sora. So they were kids and did a good job!
That last frame detail Kairi was slightly smiling is so heartwarming.

@@jojonr619 RIGHT??? Like when most of them got reunited at master Yensid’s tower it just felt more awkward than exciting. There where alot of long pauses, they could’ve just cut that out. And they all just stand there awkwardly too. It’s an reunion, everything should’ve been lively😂

Yay, you finished it! I love Sora's face at 0:44 it's so adorable, the flash of gold in Riku's eyes at 0:57 is cool, and the negative flashes synched to the heartbeat are eerie. This is an amazing video

OMG DONALD AND GOOFY PANICKED FACES WHEN SORA WAS DOWN! SUCH RAW EMOTION, THIS COULD ONLY BE DONE BY THE WORK OF A REALLY POWERFUL KEYBLADE WEILDER!
Ah, this scene, the very same scene that is burned into my mind from the original KH for the PS2. Every time I died to this fight this same scene would play again and again. Those of you who have the remixes don't know how lucky you have it. There was no such thing as skipping a scene in 2002.
This scene terrified me when I first saw it, because as soon as i realized sora was going to fight riku, I was like this is gonna be some dark souls level boss fight, and my hands would start shaking hahaha
@SuperNova dude it only took me three tries with the Kingdom Key, but the cutscenes being unstoppable made it so annoying lmao
When I close my eyes at night, I can play every KH1 cutscene in order in my head….

Goddamn I feel your pain. More than 100 times I had to rewatch that scene. So many times, that I am not even english and I ended up learning the most thanks to it. So many times that I can recite the SAME EXACT words once and once again without even trying- So, so many times that I still dream about it nowadays. Yet, OMG if I felt pretty damn GOOD when I defeated him. Loved AND love this games.
Love how you based the art style of the manga! But the animation, omg its so smooth, and the expressions, alongside the colours and shading, all make this feel really alive. Brings me joy to see, what is probably the closest we'll get to a kingdom hearts anime.
I think my favourite segment is definetly the end bit, the animation there was super fluid with the keyblade clash, and you built up the to final scene really well with the animation, truly captured this scene, so great job!
Just a few hours away from Sora in Smash and this is the perfect way to top it off
And then it took about 3 million tries before Sora could finally beat him....Great work!

On another note, this really makes me wish that they would do a Kingdom Hearts anime in some capacity. Maybe something like the Pokémon snapshot series that was released on TH-cam a few years back (Pokémon Generations, I believe).

That bit beginning in 0:57 all the way to Possessed Riki’s eyes focusing- in what I can assume is *pleasure* in his heinous reputation- are absolutely chilling and amazing. Perfectly reflects the impactful foreshadowing and returnal I feel when replaying the first game.
Amazing animation that does justice and adds its own tidbits to one of the most iconic (and infamous) scenes in the series!

I just watched this video again and I absolutely love the detail, the click of the finger everything it adds so much more to the already amazing world of KH.
i remember this cutscene word for word because back in my day you couldnt skip cutscenes so if you lost a boss fight youd have to watch it all over agan.

One thing I think was really cool about KH1 was that there was a villain "Ansem" who we don't know alot about & even don't know how he looks liked. That makes it more interesting going on to the story. At this scene you hear him say "it is I, Ansem" and even at that point you don't know who he really is and looks like.
