"A whole town destroyed" Michigan flooding and dam failures leaves path of destruction

  • A look at the a week many mid-Michigan residents will not soon forget after heavy rain and dam failures resulted in massive flooding across the region. More photos and stories about the flood here: topics.mlive.c...
    How did the dam fail? What happens next? When the Edenville Dam failed on May 19th, 2020, it started a chain of events that would devastate thousands of lives, homes, and property. So much so that President Donald Trump has approved an emergency declaration throughout mid-Michigan hit with catastrophic flooding.

      You're very right....Nature is not to blame for this...rain happens...no control as to the amount per episode, and to create the man-made lakes...Wixom and Sanford...they blockaded the natural river bed...to FLOOD the natural flood plane of the river. You roll the dice...and play the hand. Nature...(the House) won....

    • @EVAUnit4A
      @EVAUnit4A 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yes, it was human error in not maintaining these man-made structures. I don't live near these broken dams, but if there were structural concerns, it means that IF something UNUSUAL happened- like, say, an excess of rainfall- then it should have been addressed instead of "saving money" by hoping for the best. Unfortunately, the local government will NOT be held responsible, and it will all be chalked up to "an act of God" and/or "what Mother Nature giveth she can also taketh"- nothing will be learned, and it'll be forgotten within a few weeks and those who refused to act beforehand will get away scot-free, singing, "Whew- glad it didn't happen on _my_ watch! Oh, by the way, be sure to vote for me again in November, because I saved us money and kept us safe."

The dam was in the process of transferring ownership to a company that'll be completed in a year or two. Think about it, this dam first opened almost a hundred years ago, it was destined to break. • @CharmsDad

      This is flooding (defined as “rising waters” - which is separate from water damage caused by broken pipes) and home owners insurance doesn’t, and legally can’t, cover flooding (per Federal law). If they have flood insurance - which is separate from home owner’s insurance - that will cover their losses. Flood insurance is issued and underwritten by the US government, which sets the rates. You may be able to buy the policy through the same agent you get your other policies from but it is not actually issued by the agent’s company. This was put into place during the Carter administration and expanded under Clinton.

      If you want to see what this on a huge scale looks like many many years later, look up photographs of the Grand Coulee. Much of of Eastern Washington and W Idaho were transformed suddenly when an ice dam broke up at the end of the last ice age, sending a series of floods down the Columbia River drainage and cutting a Gorge through the Cascade Mountains. This left distinctive "coullees" as well as a pattern of silt soil deposits hundreds of miles wide.
      If you're in the area a Pullman Washington or Colfax Washington or Moscow I suggest driving up steptor butte. From the top the Farmland in the surrounding area looks almost like rolling waves on the ocean because of the way the silt settled from the lake Missoula floods.

      I don't know who exactly, probably the Governor, but the company that owned the dam drained the water one or two years prior. It was just a couple of feet, but it was due to the dams not being up to code, and the owner knew that it couldn't withhold heavy rain. The lakefront property owners complained and the state made them refill. The owner had stated that it was a one in a million chance that the dams would fail, the residents of Sanford had tried multiple times to get the Government to claim ownership of the dam and repair it, but was ultimately denied. The owners of the dams were bankrupt and couldn't pay the cost of upkeep. Sadly all the houses and businesses in the town of Sanford aren't covered by insurance because they aren't in a flood risk area. Every year after the snow melts the Sanford dam opens up and drains the lake above it, which in turn floods the nearby park in town, that's why they don't have flood insurance. So it's not that they didn't do anything about it, it's mainly that the government neglected to take action to prevent this from happening.

    "So when Michigan regulators assumed oversight of the dam in late 2018 after its owners lost their federal license to generate energy, they took action.
    To protect mussels.
    Three weeks before the 96-year-old dam failed this week amid heavy rains and caused the worst flood in Midland history, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel sued its owner, alleging it illegally lowered Wixom Lake in 2018 and 2019, killing “thousands if not millions, of freshwater mussels.”
    “Defendants wrongfully exerted dominion over the freshwater mussels and caused their death which denies and is inconsistent with the state’s right to them,” state lawyers wrote in an April lawsuit. "
