    I imported a US Super Game Boy for my SNES when they first came out, got Space Invaders for it, turns out it's bloody region locked >.> So it's not only the smallest SNES game, but the only region locked Gameboy Game.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I just looked that up, and you're totally right = The only "Game Boy" game to be region locked.
      Thinking about it, that makes a little bit of sense - They'd have to implement both NTSC 60Hz and PAL 50Hz code in that limited Game Boy cart space.

    • @Larry
      @Larry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did they bothercoding in 50hz modes in SNES games? Street Fighter II had horrible borders on the PAL version.

      HORRIBLE 50Hz mode, sure, but they were there...

    Great video being so in depth with alternate borders within games and loved hearing the Mario Picross puzzle theme behind the opening especially. I like to play a round a day and always feel like the game and tracks on it don't get that much attention. The first game's opening theme has no right going as hard as it does lol

      Thanks for the kind comment! I have a massive soft spot for Picross, especially Mario’s; so any excuse I have to put it in a video, I will use ;)

    I have a SGB and use it now and then to play GameBoy games. I always thought it's sad you can't link it up. I'm really looking forward to the next part of this. Great work!

      Thanks - Next week will be a shorter episode, but I may be adding some extra episodes to show off some of the borders and other bits and bobs for the Super Game Boy 1 & 2 :)
      It is odd that there wasn't a link port on the original model, but thinking about it - I don't recall the link ability to be particularly popular before the release of Pokemon. It wasn't really something most Game Boy owners even bothered with.

    Very cool video.
    I loved my Super Gameboy as a kid and I still love it now. One of the best peripherals ever made, imo.

      It really is one of the best peripherals for any console, although I didn't get one at the time, it was initially selling point for me getting a SNES - Sadly it was sold out when my parents went to get my console :(

    The Super Game Boy is my favorite peripheral of all time. I owned this, without owning a Super Nintendo-- I had to go over to my grandparents' to play it on theirs. But it was worth it. I really enjoyed messing with the color schemes. For example, showing only a single color in Donkey Kong so that when you were creating a temporary platform, the entire map disappeared and you had to place the platform by memory. In fact, I did that in a let's play. Actually, I've done several let's plays on the SGB, making sure I took advantage of its features when I could.
    If only games had taken better advantage of it. So many games were lazy about their color schemes, changing the four shades of grey to four shades of a different color instead. Donkey Kong showed that, with planning, you could have multiple colors onscreen without it looking ugly. But perhaps it was that need for planning that prevented developers from putting in that effort.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Draygone Fuzzbottom Now that's hardcore SGB usage! :)
      It really is a shame that this peripheral was so underused. I revisited the topic for a magazine article recently, and it's just insane the amount of potential this peripheral had. As you say, many developers likely thought it was too much effort.
      But, those who have one can be happy it existed, and at least Nintendo have carried on its legacy in various ways :)

      I never had the original DKL, but I did have the second and third games on Game Boy. Playing them now, I can't fathom how I could see what was going on, on that tiny Game Boy Pocket screen! :)
      Did you draw anything in particular, or was it just random doodling? It's such an odd feature!

    • @devonodevon

    Hey Pug. I Don't have anything to add to this vid, just thought I'd share my love for the Super Game Boy. I loved mine. I Remember just sat playing with the palette for ages. It made some games more playable too, thanks to not having to deal with crappy lighting or the refresh rate of the GB. Awesome peripheral of its time.

    I loved my Super Game Boy, I got the most use out of it when I let my one friend borrow my GB and my copy of Pokemon Blue, while I played through Red on my SGB (don't worry, he was a good guy and returned my GB to me when he was finished)
    I recently went out of my way to track down a bunch of Game Boy games that had SGB features, since I didn't have many growing up. Wario Land 2 and Mole Mania have some awesome borders that change every chapter/world, which is a bit nicer than the ones that just have static images. Does the original Link's Awakening have the special border? Or is it only the DX version?

    For the Super Game Boy, is it possible to make your own custom color palette. Where you pick 4 different colors of your choosing and then you can use that particular palette for your game. Also it would be nice if there were a battery save on the Super Game Boy because it doesn't seem to remember the custom color palette that I choose, but instead each time I play the game I have to set the custom palette.

    I have a question about your video editing. How did you get the background to mirror the gaming screen? Do you use two video layers?
    Thank you for making these videos!

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, so in the early days, I would just make a duplicate copy of the game footage, add a Gaussian blur and scale up the size (and also crop and add a drop shadow to the main game footage to help it stand out.)
      These days, I’ve rigged up a series of Effects in using Motion 5 that does the whole thing for me in one click (I have multiple versions as each console requires different crop settings).

  • @oaktea
    @oaktea 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My favourite thing about the Super Gameboy was that it played Pokemon in colour way better than the GBC did. This isn't true for Gold and Silver, but Red and Blue were much more coloured on the Super Gameboy. The GBC just gave them either a green or blue pallet everywhere from what I recall. Much more limited, and didn't colour the battles properly.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right, and you can see the results briefly in this video. The Super Game Boy was able to separate the screen into areas and apply a palette to those individual areas. Meanwhile, the Color just applied a basic palette to the entire screen. Clever stuff!

    Ive seen all the 3 videos, but there is 1 piece of info I could'nt get from them... the number of possible colours at once is 10, but how about the total mount of colours? How many of them

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, 10. The Super Game Boy can use multiple palettes of four “colours” for different portions of the screen. For example, the map screens of Donkey Kong ‘94 can use four palettes of four colours at once (but as only 10 colours can be used, those palettes share some of the colours). I hope that makes sense?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And if the question was how many colours of the SNES’s possible colours can be used, don’t quote me on this, but I think you can theoretically use any one of the system’s 32,768 colours.

    • @dallai3615
      @dallai3615 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PugHoofGaming thank you so much for aswering :)
      yeah, thats why I wonder about the total, like the actual "palette" , because I keep reading that can be used "multiple" palettes on the same game, but the colours on those palettes would be repeated, arent they?
      So you thing those 10 colours would be any 10 of the 32K snes palette? But in practise Im not sure if thats been done in any game actually..
      Or maybe would be the limit of these "multiple" 4 colout palettes that you.are able to put on the same game?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem :) Theoretically, I can’t see why that wouldn’t be the case, as the Super Game Boy has access to anything the SNES can do.

    Does anybody know if Super Game Boy palettes are used on the Game Boy Color? Like, if I inserted Metroid II into a Game Boy Color, would it have the same palette as it would on the Super Game Boy, or would it still have the default color scheme that the GBC uses for GB games in general?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As it happens, the Game Boy Color has its own set of default palettes for a few games - Metroid 2, for example, has a much more pleasant black/blue/red/yellow/white palette that’s much better than the SGB’s selection of garish hues.

      So when you say “clear carts” I’m assuming you mean carts meant for the Game Boy Color - The SGB 1&2 only play original GB games (or black Game Boy Color carts that are backwards compatible). If your flash cart is designed for Game Boy Color (or you’re running Game Boy Color ROMs), that won’t work, I’m afraid (but they should work on the GameCube Game Boy Player).

      I’m not sure - I would have thought someone had done it by now. Home brew devs are able to code border/palette support from scratch, but I don’t think anyone has been able to retrofit that for an existing game (or at the very least, hasn’t tried!)

      You’d need a way to get past the region lockout, either with an import adapter or by modding your system with a SuperCIC chip/board. However, unless you modified your system with a 60Hz setting, the timing would be a bit slower.

      Not detrimental at all - My 1-Chip Super Famicom has an RGB amp, dejitter board and a SuperCIC board and it’s perfect. You can get a combined board now with SuperCIC, Dejitter and a dual frequency oscillator (so that 60Hz and 50Hz modes run at the correct speeds) - Worth doing!

    So the Super GameBoy had the ability to add SNES sprites to GameBoy games, but Nintendo only had the right to use it, and it used only for a game's title font and borders? ...How come the Super GameBoy has a feature that was implemented and banned, but it was deemed to expensive at the time, to add the crystal ocsilator, and the link cable port?

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So as far as I know, the entire Game Boy featureset was free for any developer to use (after all, Taito were the only ones to use the ability to call up a SNES game directly from a GB cartridge with Space Invaders)...It’s just that very few developers bothered to do anything with it!
      It still puzzles me why there was no link port on the original unit and incorrect clock timings.

    • @TheMamaluigi300
      @TheMamaluigi300 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pug Hoof Gaming I’m guessing having both GB sprites and SNES sprites would take up too much space for almost any game, and Space Invaders is only able to do it since such a small game in the first place.
      For the lack of a link port, it was either...
      A: Because Nintendo thought it would be unfair for one player to have a big, colorful, bright screen and the other player to have a tiny, green, dark screen
      B: Because goddamn RF interference from a *wired* connection. (That is Nintendo’s actual excuse in one of the Nintendo Power issues, which sounds too stupid to be true.)
      And for incorrect clock speed, probably for manufacturing savings since the two systems’ clock speeds were close enough for most people.

      I just had a JP Super Game Boy arrive last week, so I've been using it to play my favourite game of all time: Donkey Kong '94. I'd seen commercials for the extra features DK94 has on Super Game Boy twenty years ago, but I'd never had a chance to put the two together until now, and holy god is it ever a joy to play on SGB. It has a great custom border of an old DK arcade machine, custom colour palettes for each level, and plays really, really well with a SNES controller. I've had that DK94 cart in my bag for probably twenty years consistently, and now I don't think it's ever leaving my SNES. What a great little machine.

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Gold DK94 really is one of the shining examples of what can be done with the Super Game Boy, even as one of its first games. Thanks for sharing your story!

      Do you own a PAL Super Nintendo (the one that looks like the Super Famicom) or an NTSC Super Nintendo (the purple and grey North American one)?
      If you own a North American SNES, you can snap some tabs in the cart slot and your Japanese Super Game Boy will work fine. If you have a PAL system, you'll need an import converter (and it'll run slower unless you mod your system for 60Hz).

    • @PugHoofGaming
      @PugHoofGaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The outsides might look the same, but the PAL SNES and Super Famicom are different enough to stop it working on a PAL SNES without modification. The PAL SNES and Japanese Super Famicom use different television standards (SNES is PAL 50Hz, Japanese Super Famicom is NTSC 60Hz). I use a PAL SNES which is modified to play NTSC games at 60Hz.
