Conway Twitty was an American country music singer who also had success in the rock & roll, R&B & pop genres in the 50's-90's. He has won numerous awards for his music & performed with some of the biggest stars. He had a lot of great duets with Loretta Lynn ("After the Fire Is Gone", "Lead Me On", "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man", "As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone", "Feelins'", "I Still Believe In Waltzes", "I Can't Love You Enough"). Other songs he recorded were "Hello Darlin'", "Danny Boy", "Lonely Blue Boy", "Next In Line", "You've Never Been This Far Before", "Don't Take It Away", "I May Never Get To Heaven" & many more.
the best country was old school country and not the middle of the road junk that's out today, but there will be people that will disagree, thanks for sharing this song from C T.
Conway Twitty was one of several artists (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich were others) who began their careers as rockabilly singers (singers raised in country tradition, but incorporating a heavy R&B influence) and later turned to country music (most of the 54 #1s mentioned in the intro were country songs). He was born Harold Jenkins in Friars Point MS and took his stage name from Conway AR and Twitty TX. He also had a series of successful duets with Loretta Lynn. You are correct about the record charts. The main one is the Hot 100, but there are others for country, R&B, jazz, gospel and other genres.
Loved this iwas only 7 my 17 yr old brother let me listen to his records Today he turned 83, and in 3 weeks I'll be 73. He was in the running with Elvis in 1958, An yes I think the 53 other #1s were country. Thanks for the time travel back to my favorite growling Conway Twitty song.❤
Conway has some very racy songs like 'You've never been this far before' & 'I'd love to lay you down'. Sexy! Another favorite is 'Tight fittin' Jeans', which has a story. Conway wanted to be the country, Elvis. Same era.
This song came out when i was 13 years old. I still love hearing it. I am almost 79 now. And this was considered a soft rock song. He switched to country later.
My gosh, he is like the king of country. His songs will tear your soul out. They're just beautiful and he sings so wonderful. I would have killed to have seen him
Rainy Night in Georgia by Conway and Sam from Sam and Dave from Country Rhythm and Blues compilation is beautiful. Some of his Country songs are Hello, Darling. Fifteen Years Ago, Linda on my Mind
Number one on Pop charts, played everywhere. Pop music was less segregated in late 50's-60's on the charts unlike media portrayal today. The top ten for any week could include, doo wop, big band (Lawrence Welk type), rockabilly, rock and roll/ R and B. A lot great singers from every genre. Not much difference between country and rock and roll/R and B back at that time.
Saw him 4 times, once with Loretta Lynn, after each show Conway met with fans shook hands and signed autographs, he wrote It's Only Make Believe here in Hamilton Ontario, Fifteen years ago, Hello Darling, are a couple more of his many, great reaction,
When this song was first released and Twitty was a young man his voice range was a lot better than it was in this clip, but at his age when this clip was made he was still doing very well.
This song was No. 1 on the Billboard top 100, he charted 19 on the Billboard top 100, but this was his only No.1, the remainder No. 1's were on the country charts, which was a feat unequalled for decades until King George, George Strait came along with his 60 No. 1's.
When it comes to Country Music, Conway Twitty was among the best there was. His 55 number 1 hits were only beaten once, and that was years after Conway's death by George Strait (his final count was 62). Conway also probably has the most number 2 hits in Country Music, along with dozens of others that only made it into the top 10. Also, he did not get worse with age, although his sales slowed down the last few years, his last 2 albums "Even Now" and "Final Touches", were 2 of the best he ever made. Conway had numerous hits you can check out, but I'm recommending a few of his final recordings just so you can see how good he actually still was right before his untimely death. Just about anything off of his last 2 albums is great but check out "It's Such a Heartache", "Who Did They Think He Was", and "Final Touches." Great Stuff! One of his hits that everyone on TH-cam seems to love is "That's My Job" which is a great one.
Normally, the Live performance is subpar and disappointing because they butcher the tone and melody -- switching it up all too often. But he sang this true to the studio and sung it very well.
Oh no. Not another reactor that doesn't interact with his viewers. I just found you and really enjoyed the other vid. But this is a no go for me. Interaction shows appreciation. And i don't go where there's none of that.
[Eowyn] Oh good God!!!!! Another troll who wants to redefine the word "interaction" and appreciation"!! Go back to school and you can start with classes in English and while your at it GET A DICTIONARY!!
Conway had a total of 55 #1s, a record finally surpassed by George Strait, and Strait has the advantage of being alive! The Twitty story is very sad after he died. Family fights over the estate, etcetera. Really ugly.
It's Only Make Believe actually DID reach No. 1 on the Billboard chart in November 1958.
Hard to not imagine Conway looking and sounding like this at age three. Dude was born to sing with a voice like this.

His signature song is "Hello Darling" but two other great songs are "Tight Fittin Jeans" and "Saturday Night Special"

such emotion, such passion, such pain, an amazing voice

Conway was getting old in that clip, but he still gave his all on his biggest hit. Great reaction Biz. Thanks for all the diversity in the music.

Being alive in 58’ listening to this had to be fantastic. I mean in the 50’s it was simpler times all they did was fall in love.
I saw him in concert in the 80’s and let me tell you he put on one heck of a concert true talent. Rest In Peace
i remember seeing you at that show.
Hi Biz! Nice choice. btw it was indeed on the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 in 1958, not the country chart.

Haven't heard this song in years, I'm
Not a huge country fan but this song is nice

Try "That's My Job," --his performance will make you cry.

You must check out some more Conway!
Love him or hate him... he's a big part of music history
He has sooooo many good songs!
Robert Gordon did a GREAT cover of this song (as well as a lot of other great rockabilly songs).
A true treasure Biz.
He passed away in 1993 of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. RIP Conway. He was 59.

Stage name came from Conway,AR and Twitty,TX.
Cool. Never knew that.
Elvis always my favorite but Conway's great. Someone I know thought it was Elvis singing this. Had to show them the record to prove otherwise
I miss him❤.😢😢
Normally, the Live performance is subpar and disappointing because they butcher the tone and melody -- switching it up all too often. But he sang this true to the studio and sung it very well.
I'd love to see you check out Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn doing, You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly. It's great.
No other Twitty songs be worth it

This Twitty tune, along with others, is on my work usb drive. Do you know how many people heard this, and thought it was Elvis?
Check out some of his country songs Biz. He had the girls dropping their... you know
Back then they called “soul music” country. Idk why…. Maybe cause it origins from the south of the country?
Do Conway's song, Play Guitar Play.
Jazz, blues, blue grass and country was ALL originally from the south of the US. Seriously…. Goggle it

Nothing like hello darling
