This was before Conway switched to Country Music. My parents were 50s doo wop era people. My remember my mother have her record case full of 45s. This was one of the first few.. she would play them for me when I grew up. This song has always been one of my favorites. Thank you for reviewing it. The great memory of listening to this with my parents is bitter sweet because my father passed this way and mom is slowly going away due to dementia.

Conway, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, all did some work at Sun Records in Memphis back in the '50's when Rock & Roll was just starting to rise above other kinds of music. Sam Philips owned Sun and he had intuition and taste in voices like none else. "Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis and Neil Diamond were both at Sun also. All these guys moved on from that little studio and went their separate ways but they all started at Sun. I love the history of music and I want to thank you for keeping the best music alive. I have been saddened by the possibility that it would all get cancelled or erased. You give me hope that it will live on. THANK YOU !

Conway had forty or fifty hits on the country charts into the eighties or nineties. He's also famous for Number One Country Songs with Loretta Lynn.

As a Texas resident who has remained living outside of San Antonio throughout his illustrious career, it just wasn’t feasible for George Strait to become a Grand Ole Opry member. After all, members are expected to make regular appearances on the show. In previous eras, deadbeat performers would lose membership if they didn’t make the required amount of performances. Living in Texas is the reason Willie Nelson is not a Grand Ole Opry member either, even though Willie was a member for a while when he was living in Nashville. Making his debut on November 28th, 1964, and joining as a member in 1965, Willie eventually gave up his membership when he moved back to Texas in 1972.

It is something that we can never know but I think Conway might still be the top dog as far as #1 hits go had he lived. CT did live close to Nashville so the failure of The Grand ‘Ole Opry to offer membership to him is extremely odd. He had that Twitty City thing going on that I guess was a direct competitor of the Opry and the now defunct Opryland could have been a reason. All the “baby making” songs (as Sebs calls them 🙂) that was a big part of Conway’s catalog could have been a reason I guess. Or it may have been offered and CT didn’t want to commit to the performance requirements could be the reason. But best I can tell he did perform there often or at the old home at the Ryman Auditorium downtown and even has a song about the Opry called “The Grandest Lady Of Them All”.
