This was before Conway switched to Country Music. My parents were 50s doo wop era people. My remember my mother have her record case full of 45s. This was one of the first few.. she would play them for me when I grew up. This song has always been one of my favorites. Thank you for reviewing it. The great memory of listening to this with my parents is bitter sweet because my father passed this way and mom is slowly going away due to dementia.
Conway started out as a rockNroller, but switched to country music not to long after this song was released. In my opinion this was his first # hit in the US,
when just seeing the name and the title, and the melody and the words flood into your mind... great reaction to a song, sung well.. thank you for reviewing it
"Smoother" "Real" The word for which you search is Authentic. No Auto-tune, no multiple takes and dubbing, no fixing flubs. The artist had to SING! And CT could sing.
I think he remade that song later on w/o the “Elvis’y” sound. Back in the 50’s everyone wanted to sound and compete w/ Elvis. Don’t cry Joni is another good song of Conway’s
Country fans don't have a lot of outlets on YT with chances to comment. Hurray to you for helping out! I am new to country too and I am learning so much.
You should listen to it live...he was in his 40s or 50s and sounded just as amazing. He was often compared to Elvis in his younger years. Women reacted to him like they did Elvis...often throwing under clothes on stage!
This was before my time but a classic beautiful song. Elvis also recorded this song if I remember correctly. Elvis sang it in concert if he didn't record it
Conway Twitty had 55 #1 hits throughout his career. He would have had more had he not died around the same time his final album came out called "Final Touches". He held the record for most #1's until King George came along. I love Conway!!
Conway Twitty sounded much like Elvis when he first started recording. This was his 1st big hit, but the one I remember best was "Lonely Blue Boy", where he uses a lot of Elvis's vocal techniques. It is a fabulous song, and you should check it out.
Sebs - I don’t know how we got our wires crossed on this one. Obviously every CT song that I have recommended to you was a #1 hit by Conway. This was his first one but 54 more followed this one. I don’t know if possibly the video link I sent you was blocked or maybe you didn’t use it for some other reason but the one I sent you is much more CT like than this version and it also was a live performance.
How can you be more CT like than Conway singing directly into a microphone in front of a camera? Later he did add a "country" sound to his voice to appeal to his millions of country fans, but it's an early rock & roll song.
@2:25, Dude, that's that "crooner" vocal style. Conway, Elvis, even Roy Orbison were influenced by the popular singers of the 30s and 40s, when such was the favored vocal style.
Harold Lloyd Jenkins (aka) Conway Twitty. My dad told me when i wS younger that we are related to Conway, and that’s when i learned his real name. My dad remembers being around Harold/Conway at a family reunion when he was young. I wish i could have been meeting him at a family reunion. Oh well, its for a reason. If you haven’t heard John Prine yet, check him out! “In spite of ourselves” great song!
I was 7 in 58, loved him and this song in particilar!. Exactly! He was in the running with Elvis before his country phase. Love the growl and high notes. My brother was 17 really listened more to his teen music. Great csongfor us hopeless romantics! Thanks for insightful observations! ❤
One of his lesser known hits is a great love song called ONLY THE SHADOWS KNOW. Beautiful but was only on one album.bits on yt with just the album cover but sound is good
This song was on one of my very first 45 rpm records when I was a little girl. I could get them for $1 each so I got a few every week. Sang this in front of my bedroom mirror a hundred time back in the '60's .... or was it the 50's!!! At 70, the mind is about gone but I still remember all the words to thousands and thousands of songs from my era!
Conway had me fooled for years during the doo wop era. He had a big hit with "It's Only Make Believe" and had me thinking I was listening to Elvis. For years!!!
My daddy really liked this man's singing voice, absolutely had the hots for Loretta Lynn, with respect of her and her music!! So this song was his all-time favorite. He was a great fan of both Conway & Lorettas many duets.... On the opposite side of the scope, no one could ever convince my mom otherwise that Porter Wagner & Dolly Pardon were the golden duet pair in this time Era!!!
He wrote it here in Hamilton Ontario, may have been only number one at the time, and when he was into rock and roll but he has numerous number one hits
Take a listen to Conway's "Lost In a Feeling". Conway steps aside half way through the song and turns it over to John Hughey, one of the top ever steel guitar masters.
It isn’t about Elvis Lonely Blue Boy was written by Ben Weismann and Fred Wise. It was originally titled Danny, which was recorded by Elvis in 1958 for King Creole but it was cut from the movie. The lyrics were modified and Conway recorded it in 1959
Conway, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, all did some work at Sun Records in Memphis back in the '50's when Rock & Roll was just starting to rise above other kinds of music. Sam Philips owned Sun and he had intuition and taste in voices like none else. "Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis and Neil Diamond were both at Sun also. All these guys moved on from that little studio and went their separate ways but they all started at Sun. I love the history of music and I want to thank you for keeping the best music alive. I have been saddened by the possibility that it would all get cancelled or erased. You give me hope that it will live on. THANK YOU !
You're correct with your Elvis comparison. Twitty was one of many singers who at the time copied Elvis. Of course Twitty made his own mark and style and had a great career
Sounds like Elvis because he is from the same era and area. Elvis might have even borrowed from Conway. Conway started out doing Rockabilly like Elvis and Roy and Johnny. He became popular as a Rockabilly singer first and was so popular that he was the inspiration for a Broadway musical. The character was called "Conrad Birdie" and the show was called "Bye, Bye, Birdie" starring Dick Van Dyke and Ann Margaret. Conway had forty or fifty hits on the country charts into the eighties or nineties. He's also famous for Number One Country Songs with Loretta Lynn.
I think he had more than 1.Maybe he had only one on the pop or Rock N Roll chart.Strange what people claim.Back when this came out a lot of Rock was running very close to Rockabilly and Du Wap.
He wanted to be country's Elvis & he was trying to appeal to Elvis fans & he changed his hair to that style as well. Lots of hair changes for Conway over the years. LOL Classic voice. Funny hat you said about 2-minute songs too. I host Karaoke at a Pub & Elvis has a ton of 2-minute songs. Makes me sad & leaves us wanting more.
Great reaction. Sam Moore did a cover of this just a few years back that's worth a listen. Mariah Carey does soaring background vocals along with Vince Gill. It will blow you away.
--------- Elvis was a major influence on every male singer in the mid/late 50s, Conway included, just as the british invasion was to bands in the mid 60s.
For those of you who don't know.. when he started it was hard to tell Conway Twitty from Elvis. But ain't no duplicating Elvis, and he found his sound.
If this wasn't the only song it was one of the very few songs that Elvis would not record on a studio album he did sing it live but he only recorded songs he felt like he could sing better and when he heard Conway sing this he tipped his hat and said I won't try this
You need to react to the "duo of country music" Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn" Louisiana woman/ Mississippi, man. One of the best country duet songs ever.
I want your reaction on a song called "Younger Man" by John Schneider. I listen to it and love it. It brought tears to my eyes. He wrote it to his wife. I been trying to get people to listen to this song but get ignored every time.
Conway started of as a rocker before realising it wasn't for him and turning to country music. The musical Bye Bye Birdie, based on a teenage idol (think Elvis) going into the army used the name Conrad Birdie. No need to guess where they got the name from.
Many early rock/doo wop songs had a 6/8 feel, such as this. You really should learn more about doo wop, as it influenced everything which came later. Conway had 55 #1 hits.
Although never a member of the Grand Ole Opry, he was inducted into both the Country Music and Rockabilly Halls of Fame. Twitty was the only singer to have 55 No. 1 hits in his career until George Strait eventually eclipsed the long-held record. Why would you say only number one hit?
Any idea why Conway was never made a member of The Grand ‘Ole Opry? Interestingly George Strait has never been made a member either. Together they account for around 100 of Country Music’s #1 hits. Go figure……….
@michealj9936 I'm not sure why Conway was never inducted. As a Texas resident who has remained living outside of San Antonio throughout his illustrious career, it just wasn’t feasible for George Strait to become a Grand Ole Opry member. After all, members are expected to make regular appearances on the show. In previous eras, deadbeat performers would lose membership if they didn’t make the required amount of performances. Living in Texas is the reason Willie Nelson is not a Grand Ole Opry member either, even though Willie was a member for a while when he was living in Nashville. Making his debut on November 28th, 1964, and joining as a member in 1965, Willie eventually gave up his membership when he moved back to Texas in 1972.
@@LadyMacbeth56Conway tragically passed away due to an aortic stomach aneurysm while still in his fifties. It is something that we can never know but I think Conway might still be the top dog as far as #1 hits go had he lived. CT did live close to Nashville so the failure of The Grand ‘Ole Opry to offer membership to him is extremely odd. He had that Twitty City thing going on that I guess was a direct competitor of the Opry and the now defunct Opryland could have been a reason. All the “baby making” songs (as Sebs calls them 🙂) that was a big part of Conway’s catalog could have been a reason I guess. Or it may have been offered and CT didn’t want to commit to the performance requirements could be the reason. But best I can tell he did perform there often or at the old home at the Ryman Auditorium downtown and even has a song about the Opry called “The Grandest Lady Of Them All”.
Conway Twitty had 55 number 1 hits...a long standing record until that number was eclipsed by George Strait aka King George. Conway also had a string of chart topping duets with Loretta Lynn 5 of which went to #1.
Conway Twitty had 55 No. 1 hits
The stat was strictly about the pop charts... not his country music catalog of hits...💖💖💖
@@janetmcneil5503that’s actually a fair point
44 Hes now second in No 1s to George Srait. I think l Elvis is now 3rd at 40 no.1s

At the time Elvis was in the Army, Conway was regarded by some as the new Elvis for a while.
He did sound A LOT like Elvis in this performance.
Elvis also sounded a LOT like Conway in this performance.
"Smoother" "Real" The word for which you search is Authentic. No Auto-tune, no multiple takes and dubbing, no fixing flubs. The artist had to SING! And CT could sing.
I think this references his only Billboard Top 100 hit, but he hit the Country Billboard #1 for the 55 songs that people are referencing.
When this song came out i thought it was Elvis. I loved it . thank you
when conway was trying to get a recording contract he was told he sounded to much like elvis. so he worked hard to change his style.
I think he remade that song later on w/o the “Elvis’y” sound. Back in the 50’s everyone wanted to sound and compete w/ Elvis.

Conway and this song... had the 45 back then... wore it out. Wow the memories...
Ahhh, the memories, beautiful song!!😢❤❤😢
Conway started with this song as a 50"s rock n roll song then remade it as a country song years later.
This song is 5 years older than me, but it is and always will be my #1 all time favorite song.
The song was written by Conway Twitty and Jack Nance. Elvis had performed the song many times in concert and it does fit his style.
Such a beautiful song. Great voice.
He was pop rock first with an Elvis haircut. Switched to Country and had over 40 top 100 hits and many no. 1 hits!
Conway started out in Rock and Roll but never really took off but he hit it big in Country music. ❤ I’ve always loved this song!
Twitty was the only singer to have 55 No. 1 hits in his career until George Strait eventually eclipsed the long-held record.

Conways cover of The Rose is a favorite song of mine, but I love most of the old country!
I cried when Conway passed away. Also George Jones and Elvis.
It's funny to see Conway Twitty and "only #1 hit" in the same sentence. ; )
Remains in my top 3 fav of Conway!!
Hello darlin' is another great one. Full of regret and love at the same time.
He became a singer because of Elvis
Conway... the Man!!! Had 55 number 1 hits and actually had some hits in pop music before he switched over to country...

55 to be exact
He said it was his only #1 on the POP charts.
We get the "pop" qualifier, but it took George Strait to break Conway's record of #1s.
@darrinlindsey gotcha..I hadn't watched the review yet..ty
Old music is great because of 1 simple thing . THE ARTISTS COULD SING .
When the music and the vices were REAL.
Saw him and Loretta Lynn live on Orlando back on 1979. He’s awesome.
music from the 70s was the best ever. artist took pride in their performances. [this is my favorite Twitty song]
Conway was a rockabilly artist who gradually shifted over to country. Give a listen to his duos with Loretta Lynn.
