The two Bolin albums are my favorites, but The Joe Walsh James Gang are who I think of when I think of The James Gang. Any band Bolin joins (including Deep Purple) becomes The Tommy Bolin Band with backing musicians. His playing and writing outclasses anything that his new band members can bring.

James Gang Rides Again is by far my favorite. It's one of the few albums I remember listening to on 8 track cassette as I rode around in my car. I only have 3 other ones from them - Thirds, Yer Album and Straight Shooter.

Dominic Troiano and Roy Kenner were members of the Canadian band, Bush, not to be confused with the English band by the same name. Dominic was also a member of the 60s Canadian soul band Mandala, as well as a short stint with the Guess Who. All good guitar players but Joe was and is the man.

On the "Yer Album" in the groove line at both Side A ("Turn Me Over") & Side B ("Play Me Again") at the dead end of the groove line!!! The song "Must Be Love" reminds me of Elvis Presley "Got the feelin', must be love yeah"!! The late Canadian guitarist Dominic Troiano also played in The Guess Who's "Flavors" (1974) & "Power In The Music" (1975) & also their last 2 albums with Burton Cummings.

Pete - Started watching your videos, and really enjoying them! I was kinda hoping that BANG would be at #1, but i can understand. I think i'm one of the few that actually liked The Eagles 'without' Joe Walsh...as I would rather listen to his 'solo' stuff. Most people associate him with the James Gang...but i prefer the Tommy Bolin stuff. Like i said, i have been enjoying your videos, and the only other one that i agreed 100% with was your one on Queen. THAT had to be a tough one...especially the top 3. I do enjoy how you take the stance that these are just YOUR opinions, and not everyone will agree with them. I probably have double the cd's you have behind you, and enjoy everything....or, when people ask what i enjoy, i usually reply with "I like everything but RAP and Chinese Opera". LOL just to mess with their heads. Oh yes, i am also a fellow NY'er, but no longer live there. Keep up the great work. I, along with many other people enjoy your take on things. Be Well.

I was first introduced to James Gang through Tommy Bolin (after listening to some tracks from the awesome Bolin box set). Soon after I listened to the rest of the material James Gang put out over the years and I was really impressed. A great band, in all its line-up configurations! I feel James Gang is a bit underrated when compared to other rock bands in the 70's.

Great show, Pete. During high school, I first heard James Gang's 'Yer Album' soon after its release while listening to Clyde Clifford on KAAY-AM out of Little Rock, AR. Clyde had a nightime show and introduced a lot of great first albums on that station. I lived in Kansas City, MO at that time so that was a strong-ass signal being that LR was 425 miles away. I had the privilege of seeing James Gang live after the release of 'Rides Again. Great show. Sometime around this period, either Newsweek to Time magazine had Joe on the cover with the capiton "Joe Walsh - The next Jimi Hendrix?" This was due to his guitar work on 'Rides Again', side 1. The first two albums and the first 'Barnstorm' album are still my favorites. Interesting fact: 'Yer Album' featured a song named 'Funk # 48', then 'Rides Again' of course had 'Funk # 49'. The riffs are reminiscent of each other. I was very disappointed that he didn't have a 'Funk # 50' on 'Thirds'. At that point in his life, he probably forgot that he had written the first two versions! Of course, he finally did 'Funk 50' in 2012. So he completed the triad. And lastly, Joe did the most amazing musical-related thing I have ever heard. This was probably in the 80s. He was in KC for a Saturday show and was on the local FM rock station, KY102 on Friday afternoon. This was something that stations used to do back then that was really great. Anyway, Joe had an acoustic guitar with him and the DJ asked him to play something. So Joe proceeded to play a song in one key on the guitar and sing it in another. I've played a guitar as a hobby pretty much my whole life and I have no idea how someone could do this. Leave it to Joe... :)

I wish Pete would do a "history of/discography/ranking of" albums involving Tommy Bolin. Although he had only two studio releases, he has appeared on numerous releases by various acts such as Zephyr, Energy, Billy Cobham, Alfonse Mouzon, The James Gang, Moxy, Deep Purple as well as tons of live albums and compilations of rarities. I'm sure many would agree that Tommy was one of the greatest unsung guitar heroes who covered a wide variety of musical styles in the short while he was with us.

The way music was made to sound like in the late 60' & early 70's, hard driving rock, innovative sounds, vocals and musicianship. Best years were with Joe Walsh's powerful influence and one of the most classic album covers with James Gang Rides Again.

Totally agree on Yer Album as their best. The tracks Lost Woman, Stop ,Bluebird (all covers) and the psychedelic Fred are standouts. Great bottom end bass from Tim Kriss and Joe's heaviest guitar work (reminiscent of Clapton), It's really too bad we don't have a 69 era bootleg concert to listen to however there is the Fillmore West Nov 1970 (Sabbath opened) boot that is a great and lot's of jamming. This performance is superior to the Carnegie Hall official release in my opinion.

Diggin yer list, Pete!!!! Only because I'm a vinyl freak, and reissues might still be scarce, I MUST recommend two James Gang tracks ONLY on 1971 soundtrack "Zachariah". (retitled "A Head Of His Time" on some reissues...)
--"Laguna Salada" is an instrumental with a meanass fuzz riff throughout.
--"Country Fever" will kick your ass all around the room as you groove to it.
(From that same soundtrack, you'll also dig Jimmy Haskell's version of William Tell Overture--think 'classical rock'!!)

I am a new subscriber, you blow my mind dude. You know all the James Gang albums, you dig Goat's Head Soup, you have a least fav Uriah Heep album. WTF? Who are you!? You have won me over. And your dog has a nice tail, I saw it in one of your videos. You're alright.

I like Rides Again and Live Album with Joe Walsh .
Both Janes Gang Miami and Bang with Tommy Bolin are very good albums too because of some songs. Sounded similar these albums wirh Bolin like Moxy I and II.

I never understood why Joe left the band. Dale and Jimmy were the best rhythm section he ever had.
Listen to the live album. MONSTERS

...was just revisiting THIRDS. "Walk Away" is the kick off track and it's followed by "Yadig"? "Yadig"? would be a great blindfold test tune. This is The James Gang?!?! Dale Peters on upright bass & vibes???
