I made one of these in 1978 and found it again just recently. I spent 3 hours and only managed 5 of the many hundreds of arrangements. Still, it doesn't need batteries and works anywhere with a flat surface!

Soma is not a puzzle, it is a meditation.

I discovered that if you leave out the three cube piece the remaining six can be formed into a larger version of it. This led me to create two additional pieces, both using four cubes. The first has the four in a simple straight line, the second in a 2x2 box. You can then use the eight pieces to form larger versions of each of them.

I have only 5 pieces to make cube.
So 2 X 240 solutions . Left and their mirror ( Right ) images.

So 240 mathematical solutions.
And 480 solutions if you pay attention to the position of the pieces.( Left / Right c.q. mirror )
The number is mathematically ( 1961 ) as well by use of the computer. ( some years later ).
Also possible is by hand ( but that is not so easy )

But in fact. Mirrors do not exist !
If you are mirroring the pieces only 5 Pieces can be mirrored.
So , the 2 pieces ( A and B acording to fam-bundgaard ) , pieces very much resembling each other , cannot be mirrored.
If you do so you are changing their positions. Piece A arrives on the place of B, and B arrives on the place of A. ( both mirrored )
So with the " mirrors " 240 completely new solutions.

Hi. This puzzle has hundreds of different solutions to assemble it to a cube and many solutions how to assemble it to other different shapes. It was difficult for me to find first solution, as soon as i was able to assemble it to a cube, i found many other solutions. I think you will be able to figure out at least 5-10 solutions if you play few hours.
i tried to make a cube once, but dont ask me, how. lol. but anyway its a Great puzzle. and the wooden box is Great, too.
It is a great puzzle because of many solution. You can play every day and find new solutions every day.
If you still want me to write you solution i can do it but it is more fun to find it yourself since there are hundreds of solutions available.
atleast some starting hints. i noticed there are pieces of various types. some flat, some 3d.
It is so difficult to describe how to solve it in words. I wrote you how to assemble half of cube. If you can understand my guidance, try to solve the rest by yourself and write me back if you succeed.
There are three 3d pieces and four 2d pieces. Also you have a box. i'll refer to each wall of the box as left, right, front and back.
Grab a T shaped piece and put it into the box to the right with the leg facing up.
There are two 3d piece that are very similar, if you put both of them on a table one has horizontal part and vertical part on the left side, an other has horizontal part and vertical to the right. Grab one with vertical part to the right. and put it into the box close to back wall.
Grab the a 2d piece which consists of 2 similar parts placed on top of each other with one step to the right. Put it into the box close to front wall. This part will partly cross the first part you put into the box.
Explore the box. First layer is almost complete, there is only one spot left in the middle. Next grab a 3d piece which is similar to one you already out into the box. Put it inside the box to empty spot in 1 layer so that the other part of this piece will face front wall.
At this point you will have layer 2 almost complete. There are only 2 empty corners close to the back wall.
Now try to assemble the cube by yourself. There are only 3 parts left.
