    For painting Cylinders...Tremclad Gloss Black Rust Paint does an outstanding job. Pick up a small can of paint, and a 1/2" wide... with approximately 2 1/2" long bristles paint brush (to reach deep between the fins). With the cylinders washed/oil free and dry, mask off the head and base gasket surfaces. Using a trouble-light to see clearly where you're applying the paint between the fins, start with the cylinders up-side down and work the paint into/onto the cylinder/fins until you've coated everything you can see. Flip the cylinder over and work the paint into/onto the rest of the cylinder. Double check that you've missed no areas (this is where the trouble-light is helpful) Remove the masking tape from both gasket surfaces of both cylinders after approximately 1/2 hour. Let the paint cure for 24 hours if you have the patience. This Tremclad Gloss Black Rust Paint is Heat-Proof and will retain it's Gloss Black finish for years...and covers the cylinders with a much thicker coating of paint than even a few coats from spray bombs. I've used this procedure on Many cylinders since 1979...with outstanding results.

    Got a '79 FXE myself that's been out of commision for WAAAAAAY too long. Good intel. I'd like to breath new life into it before I kick the bucket!
    Tnx for the step by step. Done a top end w/ the help of a machinist bud. Had the cases split after I ran the piss out of my top end.
    Now, it needs some more TLC. Still on the fence of doing it myself as much as I can or, just throw $$$$ at it. LOL.

    mike, you better don't clean the top of the piston. the carbon deposit is a protection for the heat! also the bottom of the valve (the side that's in the cillinder) knowing that the shovel head has problems with heat in the cillinder because of the bad flow of the exaust valve , you better let stick the carbon deposit. thank you for this video, i learnt very much from it! i just got my motorcycle license en i want to build a motorcycle with a shovel my self! your videos a really helpful! Sorry for my bad english, i'm from the netherlands.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You. Cleaning away the carbon once it's been exposed is important. A nice even coating of carbon is one thing, but when it starts to flake, those carbon deposits can do real damage, like, come loose and score the cylinder walls. Always best to start clean and remove all sharp edges from the piston.

    Hey Mike! I must say you are 'The Dude"!
    Been workin on my 78 Shovel as well. It's on my channel. Just put the Shorty E back on it vs. the Mikuni HSR42 so as to take it and get it inspected then I'll put the Mikuni back on and master the tuning of it. Love your stuff! Thanks!

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had to deal with "inspections." My heart goes out to you. Is this for emissions? The HSR is pretty easy to tune, if you follow the provided manual. The paragraph on setting the idle mixture will usually get you where you want to go. Good luck. And, thank you.

    • @kjenkins8648
      @kjenkins8648 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pacificmike9501 No not for emissions, especially in Texas, it's just because I can get the bike to the insp station using the shorty E but if I were to put the mikuni on it would run so bad I might not make it that far! I rode it to the station yesterday and it ran fine but they wanted me to have a speedo! So now I've got to put that on then ride it back. But I think I have the mikuni figured out so I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again!

    Hey brother, I love your videos! My old man has given me his 84 fxwg shovelhead and its blown the headgasket. I've found that everyone I called to help me fix this thing is to scared to work on it and sends me to someone else that won't work on it. (Even places who supposedly specialize in rebuilds) I found a guy but it's probably time for me to learn the ways! I subscribed and look forward to gleaning all i can from you brother.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's sad, but true. Most shops want to work on more "modern" motorcycles. I don't want to work on things for people when I'm not qualified to do so. If you can't find "that guy," you gotta do what ya gotta do. It may take a while, but you do your research, pay attention, and go from there. You have to be careful on disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly on each step. Why did that gasket fail? Is everything in good shape? Are the mating surfaces flat? Are the threads pulling from the head surface? When you put it back together, align the manifold, and carefully adjust the valves. Hydraulic lifters are different from solids. No room for error here. I made serious mistakes in my youth. But, everyone starts at the beginning.

    • @kendallphillips4190

      @@pacificmike9501 I did find a guy who is well vetted by a lot of people around my area. I'm having him do a tune up and look over my SS carb as well.
      I'm no where close to being confident enough to break this thing down as far as you do but I am going to start asking more questions, paying attention and researching these things out so I can have a base of knowledge to grow from. I truly appreciate your response brother!

The motor is frozen & all the wires & chrome has been destroyed by mice & rat urine.I am so happy that i found you & have gained a lot of confidence to proceed with this project watching your videos. If i should run into a question that i can't understand will you be able to answer if i write it here ? i heard you say email is this the same thing? After a few weeks of marvel mystery oil & 30 % vinegar it seems that i can kick the kick starter but the pistons don't seem to be moving. The clutch is working when i engage it & allows me to freely kick the kicker real easy but as soon as i release it it takes all i got to kick it down half way but it seems to have loosened up & before i started the filling of the cylinders that was not possible. The chain is off the bike completely. Thanks again for your knowledge & willingness to share with us. Thanks Cliff Sr.

    Are you going to be showing a rebuild on the 4 speed transmission that was in those bikes?
    I have A79FXSE low rider with the 80" motor in it and the 4 speed transmission that leaks oil out of around the output shaft behind the drive's brocket like crazy.
    I will be intrested in seen how you addressed that issue that the 4 speed somehow seemed to have.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'll be doing at least the seal on one of those very soon. It is a '79 FX and exactly like yours. Just realize, it is a very primitive part on those transmissions and it will be nice for quite a few months after you do it. Then, it will start to leak again. I've learned to do them very well, but they just give problems again and you live with it until you fix it again. Just nature of the beast and it's coming up soon.

It has never been started because of reasons I won't get into. Also what oil do you recommend for initial startup!!! Keep up the great videos Mike preciate it!!!😎

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it is a bit of a gamble. But here goes: First I would retorque the head bolts and cylinder nuts. I would replace the intake 0-rings. Run some Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders from the sparkplug holes(don't get too carried away with this and let the motor sit for a couple of days for that oil to free up any sticking at the pistons and rings). I don't know how carefully this motor was stored, but think about all the bearings possibly being dry. If you think they aren't, then, with fresh oil in your oil tank and your sparkplugs out, rotate the engine. Make sure your oil pump is getting oil to the motor by removing the tappet screen plug and seeing oil come out when you rotate the crank. Turn it a few times to fill the lifters with oil. I didn't say it before, but a clean oil tank and new oil lines is mandatory. Good luck. Or, pull the top end, pour a little oil on the flywheel assembly and put the topend back together with new gaskets, rings and lubrication. It's your call. Either way, good luck on what sounds like a real pleasurable project.

    I weighted pistons, one is 503.2 grams and the other is 504, what do you think,
    Thanks in advanced. Gerard from Thailand , great show. Cheers

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to tell from here. That's a serious motor. I've ridden the S&S 103 before. Real torque monster. Very cool. After checking everything for wear (going by S&S specifications), I'd freshen it up and put it back together. I'd check the bore very carefully for taper. I'd check those valve guides very carefully. That's a big motor with a very long stroke. That long stroke makes for a lot of piston speed, therefore, friction and wear. But that's gotta be fun. With new rings, seals, no vacuum leaks, carburetor jetted right, you'll be having a great time again.

Should I just get it as tight as can or should I be contacting S&S and asking them? There is no compensator just a gear and a big nut. Thanks, Jay

      Make sure the end is straight (that's the end you took loose from the carburetor). Then run a bunch of penetrating oil down the sleeve from the top. Let it soak overnight, then, pull it out. It still might be a battle. Good luck.

    Thank you for your series of Shovelhead videos Mike. Im currently rebuilding my ‘78 FXE 74” Shovel and I had to order new pistons. In one of your videos you mention that the valve cutouts are different sizes for the difference between valves. The new ones I got look to be the same size, is this normal for aftermarket pistons to have the same size valve cutouts? Thanks again

      Many years ago, we did all that "in house." Then, my local machine shop put in a new 200 and some thousand dollar guide and seat machine. It was all over. We began sending it over to them. The accuracy and quality was perfection. It's expensive, but well worth it. The risk of damaging a cylinder head is too great. Porting is a very exacting science too, and I farm that out to the experts. I used to bore cylinders. Then, they put in a modern 160 thousand dollar computerized boring machine. I sold my old boring machine. This work is very expensive. But, precision work makes for a long lasting, good running machine. Sorry I can't be of more help.

      Well, it's always nice to freshen things up. Intake leaks with the old "plumber" style nuts and ferrels are a pain to make seal. They really look great, but I check them costantly, then, I get fed up and change them for "O-ring" adapters and manifold, made by Colony. The major suppliers of parts for old Harleys all carry them. I retorque Knuckle cylinder heads until they take a "set." So, again, it's always nice to freshen things up. Congrats on getting that bike. What a wonderful thing!

    Do you have any experience with them "speed pro" "moly" rings?. ($60 for a set in 1999). I used some last time I over hauled my 1979 flh engine because i could not get my ring end gaps exactly where I wanted them with hastings rings as the bore was done slightly too big. The speed pro rings were purposely over sized and i got my ring end gaps exactly within specs.. It was ridden for 17 years in mostly 35mph beach roads in a small beach town. They did not seem to seat all the way till after 17 years when i started taking a highway 50mph trip once a week. after a year of that, engine stopped smoking even a puff and rings seem to be seated well now after a few years of that. Does that make sense to you in your experience? Have you ever heard of it taking that long to seat rings?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. But I haven't heard of everything. Usually, if rings don't seat, I figure out why and put in another set. Some rings certainly seat quicker than others. Sometimes, the engine never gets to warm up. Hard to say. But, it seems you solved your own problem. It sounds like she needed a serious ride.

First rebuild, it became 80 inches (1340). I've never been sorry. A little more power is nice. 74's are really smooth. I like the early heads. The sixty-six to sixty-nine motors are beautiful. • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it in "Closed side out?" Did they replace the spacer with the seal? Is the motor building unnecessary crankcase pressure? Is the engine "wetsumping" and filling up the crankcase? Is the crankcase breather functioning correctly? These are the questions that must be answered.

    Mike, I have an 88 80 motor with 180,000 miles. People say I need to replace tappets. No noise in valve train. I bought heritage with 0 miles. Broke it in as recommended. Change oil and filter at same times more frequently than needed using Harley products. Always burned premium fuel. Drive it properly as a general rule.no burn outs ever. Cars have been getting 2 and 300,000 miles on hyd tappets. I have rear head off to replace blown out gasket and they are bugging me again like theydid 6 yr ago when I did front. All point to destruction of the motor. I don't believe it. Not mechanically possible. What do you think?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      " Nothing succeeds like success." But, we all have to go by what we see or what we've seen. I certainly applaud you're success. You and your motor are quite impressive. "Normally," those lifters would have failed by now. You mentioned blown gaskets. Is that head gaskets or base gaskets? Usually, it's base gaskets. Evo motors obviously outlast anything Harley I've ever seen. But, I hate surprises. I would certainly be inspecting things. Cylinder bores go a long time in these motors. We used to freshen things up in them by doing a simple hone job and replacing the rings. Hand lap the valves, inspect and usually replace the lifters, then go again. Hard to make recommendations by assuming things. Just one man's opinion. Enjoy your motor. I hope it lasts forever.

    • @davidvoss7357
      @davidvoss7357 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pacificmike9501 so I guess the men that work on Harleys all seem to be of the same opinion. Can't believe that the motor has this mileage and only head gasket trouble. Plenty of power when I get on top of cam and let her go. On the front cyl there was one head bolt removable by hand ( no torque) and on rear there were two. Head was flat on granite plate. Bores look perfect. What is your usual practice as to miles before you decide to replace them. Valve train geometry remains unchanged since single cam engine made? So stock cam and springs put the same effect on tappets. Or is evolution engine in a class of its own? Looking for comparative values trying to understand why this engine, those previous engines, and car engines can not be all considered equal regarding tappets. Had replaced hall effect with points years ago. Steel manifold. S&S shorty. Other than that stock. Had primary open couple times. Once the stator and later the fiber discs. Parts look brand new in there.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay. Again, we can only go on what our experience has been. Yes, as far as lifters are concerned, Evo lifters historically, don't last as well as we would like. The geometry of Harley's V-Twins from Panheads to Evos, have awkward, at best, angles on the pushrods. The front exhaust has a really severe angle. The rear exhaust, not so bad. The intakes have matching angles. But, neither here nor there, the lifters in an Evo are not the same as automotive. For whatever reason, we've replaced a lot of Evo lifters with high performance after market units. The old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," is fine. But, when a lifter comes apart, it can do damage, usually by contaminating the engine with pieces of metal. As a mechanic, I've always been afraid of taking chances.If you continue to blow head gaskets, I'd be wanting to check and see if the cylinder studs are pulling up out of the crankcase. This is very common and quite suspect. Don't mean to be an alarmist or bearer of bad news.
